A wasteful Dele Alli maintains his scoring form, Mesut Ozil wins the plaudits but blanks again, while injuries to Ryan Bertrand and Darren Fletcher cause early Gameweek 8 concerns. Here are the notes from Saturday’s international tussles…

Alli Nets Again

England found a way past the Maltese bus at Wembley, with Spurs midfielder Dele Alli (8.2) scoring the second goal.

The Spurs man could, and should, have had more, but his strike confirmed his blossoming form – you just wouldn’t know it from his Fantasy Premier League ownership.

Alli has scored a solid 24 points over the last four Gameweeks and yet he has consistently suffered sales. Having started the season as part of 415,753 FPL squads, Alli is now found in just over half of that figure, although he looks to have enjoyed a small gain in ownership heading into next weekend’s fixtures – the first Gameweek where he has shown an increase this season.

This trend is undoubtedly attributed to the popularity of team-mate Heung Min-Son (7.6), who has seen a big surge in his ownership (141,900 transfers in this week alone) on the back of four goals and two assists from his last four starts up front.

Spurs’ remain in the thick of the international action, and with a UEFA Champions League fixture looming, Mauricio Pochettino would not have been overly pleased to see Danny Rose (5.9) playing such a full part at Wembley.

He came on for the injured Ryan Bertrand (5.4), whose hamstring issue has already ruled him out of the Slovenia clash.

Rose has himself only just returned from a spell on the sidelines and Pochettino must now be pondering his rotation options in the light of his international minutes.

The 5.3% of FPL managers who own Rose will be hoping that he gets the nod for the trips to West Brom and Bournemouth, rather than the Champions League fixture at Bayer Leverkusen.

Bertrand Concern for Saints

Bertrand’s hamstring injury will be a major worry for Claude Puel with the club confirming that their left-back will now return to the south-coast for an assessment.

Should Bertrand face a spell on the sidelines, Puel will likely turn to Matt Targett as his replacement, although he was also nursing a minor injury which saw him miss out for England U21’s and remain with the club over this break.

Targett started the first three Premier League matches and would be of interest to FPL managers given his 4.4 price tag.

The Saints have kept three consecutive clean sheets in the league heading into their Gameweek 8 home encounter with Burnley – they’ve kept six successive shut-outs in all competitions.

Ozil sparkles but draws a blank

Things seemed to be looking up for Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil (9.5) when he was initially credited with an assist in Germany’s 3-0 win over the Czech Republic.

It soon transpired that he had in fact missed helping on the pass that led to the German opener – par for the course for a man who had 19 assists last season but has none in six league matches this campaign.

Two goals have sugared the pill for the 7.4%-owned midfielder, but his premium price is surely testing the patience of his FPL owners.

Ozil’s performance against the Czechs garnered high praise, but he could do with improved returns to back up his undoubted influence.

Domestic matches at home to Swansea City and Middlesbrough and a trip to Sunderland have a last chance saloon feel to them, with Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott continuing to offer more explosive potential in the Gunners’ camp.

McArthur on target as Fletcher pulls up

Scotland’s last-gasp draw at home to Lithuania confirmed the unlikely goalscoring form of Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur (4.9).

His late, late header was his third goal in four matches. Throw in an assist as part of an impressive 12-point haul in the 3-2 win at Sunderland and it is perhaps unsurprising that McArthur has enjoyed a mini-surge in his FPL popularity – he gained more than 28,000 owners heading into Gameweek 7.

As one budget midfield option grows in strength, another suffers a potential blow.

McArthur’s introduction came as a result of Darren Fletcher’s (4.4) withdrawal at half-time. He suffered a first-half thigh injury and is now a major doubt ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Slovakia.

That’s bad news for the well-owned West Brom veteran, who is found in 9.6% of FPL squads.

Tony Pulis will also be hugely concerned given the forthcoming schedule awaiting his side.

The Baggies face Spurs and Man City at home, along with tough trips to Liverpool and Leicester City over their next four Gameweeks.

An absence for the influential Fletcher would surely have some bearing on their chances in those matches – Fletcher has made more successful passes in the opponents’ half than any other Baggies player.

Out of Africa

Liverpool’s Sadio Mane (9.0) continued his fine start to the season going with an assist for Senegal’s opening goal in the 2-0 win over Cape Verde Islands.

The 15.0%-owned midfielder has three goals and an assist from six league starts and, once Gameweek 8’s home match with Manchester United is done, enjoy a superb run of fixtures all the way through to New Year’s Eve.

Hull City also have a prolonged run of attractive matches to come – their next stern test appears to be Spurs away in Gameweek 16 – so striker Dieumerci Mbokani’s (5.5) brace for DR Congo in a 4-0 win over Libya will have done his prospects no harm.

Mbokani made his first start for the Tigers in the 2-0 loss to Chelsea and, depending on his fatigue levels, he will be in line to retain his start for the trip to Bournemouth next weekend.

Benteke or Austin for me. Once Saints fixtures pick up Austin at that price becomes a hugely attractive prospect.

Since many of us FPL managers have doubled up on the Albion defence (including Mark), its time to shake things up a little considering their dire fixtures.
While the likes of Evans and McAuley are favourites to leave yet showing the door first to Foster seems more beneficial as it gives us an extra 0.6 courtesy of a straight swap with Pickford.

    But the real question is:
For how long do we expect Pickford to remain as first choice in goal for Sunderland? Thoughts very appreciated!

Also got double Albion defence. Yeah can always bench a defender or go AOA, Fosters gotta go first. Torn between getting a decent keeper for 5.0, Pickford seems too short term. Tempted by Karius/Cech/Lloris.

        I plan to keep pickford

I'm hoping the fact that he is English and has performed well will ensure he keeps his place

But I do need to shift jakupovic as he looks like he has lost his place and we definitely need back up with pickford

At least until Mannone comes back. I get the feeling Moyes doesn't trust Pickford 100%.

    Wildcard advice needed!

    Pickford / Grant

    Stones Robertson Francis Kone Amat

    Sanchez Walcott Firminio Coutinho Son

    Aguero Lukaku ?

I am going very light in defense with the plan to downgrade Walcott/Son once they get dropped and upgrade in the back.

As you can guess will play 3:5:2 here, but need some advice:

    1) Am I going completely crazy?

    2) If not, which 'bench striker' to get for 5.1m? Stuani? Diomande (gives me 0.5m to spend in defense)? Any other ideas?

    3) Other 4.5m defenders to consider?

    1. ANDER.
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 6 months ago

      1) Yes
      2) NOT Diomande. I have him and its a constant worry.
      3) Holebas or Smith for 4.6.

Plus, I don't like your team.

Look at Stoke defence, awesome fixtures. Love this team generally. Kelly also worth a look now Palace have hit form. Rotatable.

Don't get diamonde, Stuani a better shout.

If lukaku is injured I will be doing sim and going five strong mids and aguero plus rashford and Austin.

Only my opinion but if that's a wc team I'd prob start again. You got to bear in mind that you got a long way before you can do it again. That defence is atrocious and no room for maneuver. If I had that team I'd be thinking of planning a wild card lol. Each to own though

Plus with a wc I'm not keen on plannnig future moves.they never work out

Utter nonsense. That front seven is in form and on fire? Who on earth would wild card them? At best you'd downgrade one to improve the defence.

    Couple of quick questions

    1) Deeney or Benteke as a 3rd striker next to kaku/kun
    2) cheapest nailed on def? amat i presume?
    3) which mid will u be ok to go without on a WC: Firmino, Walcott, Son, Sterling, Sanchez?.....currently undecided between the last two as i have kun/wally as cover.
    4A) snod/ibra or 4B) deeney/sanchez?

    1. Evasivo

      Deeney Amat Son 4B

      1) Prefer Deeney for consistency and fixtures, but Benteke is getting a lot of praise. His stats are not exceptional, but when he gets a good header he scores.

      2) Amat at 4.1m for sure.

3&4) Ibra's stats are amazing and I would love to keep him as well, but looking at Arsenals fixtures and Sanchez performance it's a clear Sanchez & Deeney. If you have Kun I would probably go without Sterling. That said, if you have the funds Sterling > Walcott.

      Benteke if can afford
      Amat
Sterling, but personally wouldn't double up on arsenal attack so would have him over wally if got Sanchez
Zlatan not essential until after next two fixtures. After that, for me, he needs to return to people's squads and will really burn those without.

Hi all, I wanted to check if I urgently need a change to this team. I have 0 FT (already did an early Antonio-> Son transfer this gameweek) and about 1.9 in the bank - the reasons behind contemplating changes are :
    1. My bench is very weak and both Sterling and Lukaku look under injury risk
    2. I have very limited Arsenal cover and might consider getting Mustafi/Cech in

My current rank is about 19K so good start so far and don't think big changes are needed

    Foster
    Williams Walker Holebas
    Sterling Sanchez Son Firmino Capoue
    Aguero Lukaku

    Jaku Amat Kingsley Diamonde

Look forward to hearing your views.

This is almost as bad as mine below. Kingsley to Mustafi? If you can't do that, Diamonde to Austin. But wait on lukaku first.

Kingsley to Mustafi looks very enticing now, will allow flexibility of 352 and 442. It will however severely limit flexibility going forward - will have to downgrade either Sanchez or Sterling to make any major plays after that.
Thanks both - I will wait for the pressers and then take a call

I haven't made a transfer before international games kicked off in over two years, after I was burnt by a staggering five injuries in the autumn of 2014.

But this time I did it as had to get an Arsenal defender in before price falls. The kicker? Swapped Capoue for Fletcher to afford it.

Fletcher now out, with a real danger of dropping to 4.3 before I can shift him. Lukaku looking injured. Sterling and Pickford both flagged. Three others coming back from South America. Kingsley already rotting as my third sub.

Might have to take a hit just to get 10 out, let alone 11.

Note. Never, ever do this again. Always wait until the Friday night after an international break before doing a transfer.

I would worry for his minutes next Saturday. Wenger lost him for 3+ months last season due to not managing his minutes - I feel he will be on the bench next weekend. I'll be putting the armband on Aguero as a result.

He might be. But I don't think so. I think he'll start, play seventy. He can easily be benched midweek.

It really is so stupid how clubs pay the wages of players to go half way around the world so many times a year. Not arguing from a cash perspective. But no internationals should be allowed to be played at least 4 or 5 full days before.

Whilst I'm ranting, just move them all to the summer each year and stop stalling my fantasy football!

I'm no help at all really...

silly to sell sterling when I bought him @ 8.3?

On WC just finding excuses so I can draft in some new toys (Payet, Snoddy, Son...)
City playing Barca in champions league and Utd in the cup....will he be rotated?

City's group is much tighter. If there is any doubt to his fitness I'll be surprised if he starts at weekend.

It's a worry. On a wildcard I would move for sure given wealth of form players in that bracket.

It's going to be mental. Even more so with Jose in charge.

Left field differential captain punts this week:

Payet, bang in form again, away to a patched up Palace back line who now just want to attack.
Austin. On pens, home to Burnley. Burnley. At home.
Arnie. Beyond due. Torn it up on international. Playing Sunderland at home. I mean, come on.
Hazard. Loves a big fixture at home. Leicester away are a disaster.
Anybody at all from Monday Night Football in what could be a goal fest.

    Any advice here? 2FTs, 1.1ITB.
Would really like to get Son in, but there's nobody obvious to remove from the midfield. Possibly Sterling? Will almost certainly bring a Spurs or Arsenal defender in, but for Baines or Lovren? Cheers for any replies.

    Pickford / Jaku
    Baines / Lovren / Evans / Amat / Holebas
    Sterling / Sanchez / Capoue / Snodgrass / Firmino
    Lukaku / Aguero / Deeney

For 1.1 in bank that is a very strong team.

Remove Baines for Kos. Job done. Save other transfer.

      • 12 Years

That's a tough one. Looking to get Son myself (Capoue>Son) but my move is only possible cos I don't have Sanchez. You are right, unless you get rid of one of your 8M+ MIDs or Deeney to fund the upgrade of Snoddy/Capoue, no real means to own him.

      You can't have them all.

      Perhaps Lovren > Spurs defender
      Baines > Arsenal defender?

      • 10 Years

Got the same midfield and I've just accepted I can't get Son in. Snoddy would be the obvious one to go but that'd mean downgrading elsewhere. I'd just do Lovren->Mustafi (if Baines isn't injured) and save the other transfer

      1. Marcus Aurelius
        • 11 Years

Thanks all, much appreciated. I might leave Son for the moment, and if Sterling blanks then knee-jerk him right out of there. Could be worth doing the double defensive transfer to rest easy for that area of the team. I could get Son for Capoue, but it would mean getting rid of Deeney who I brought in for a run of fixtures rather than just a couple.

Defence is what needs work. Front 8 near perfect.

Getting a pool defender was always going to be an error...

Bring in arsenal defender for now. I'm half tempted to captain a defender for that match. Surely as close to a banker as you'll ever get to a clean sheet.

What? No. Not for a hit. Not even for free.

Lukaku has a niggle and an awful fixture. Zlatan and Firmino a coin flip playing up front against each other.

And Townsend has West Ham at home which is currently the best attacking fixture available!

      Just save.

    2. Mata-Is-The-Juan
      • 12 Years

Why ASAP? Firmino they only one close to a price change and even he is less than 80% there.

You probably want Koeman's assurance that Lukaku is fit and rearing to go before getting Ibra in. It's looking like he might feature in Belgium's next game.

All things considered, I'd pull the trigger on the transfer.

    Hi, need some help here.

My line-up: Heaton, Vertonghen, Morgan, Jagielka, McAuley, Cazorla, Sanchez, Capoue, Payet, Aguero (c), Costa (v)

    Bench: Foster, Diomande, Holgate, Allen

    1) Will Sanchez be playing full match this weekend? I noted that after the last international break, he wasn't played full match.

    2) My defence look light and I am thinking of Ben Gibson for Holgate and Cedric for McAuley. I can't do any transfers now as I have used up my FT.

Comments would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Which combo scores more over the next few weeks?

    A) Son/Walcott + A. Smith
    B) Bellerin/Koscielny + Snodgrass

Thinking B but A is tempting as Son appears essential playing as a false 9.

Again. Just to repeat. Snodgrass has 8 fixtures in a row with an average difficulty of 1.9. If you don't bring him in now, there will never be a time to bring him in.

His stats are putting me off. Really hasn't done that well recently, albeit against tough opposition.

Son seems to be so involved in everything.. It's a toughie.

Also, use the comparison tool for Bellerin v A.Smith.. Not much between them

Smith is quality. Vastly underrated player. But will keep a lot less clean sheets.

            Very harsh to judge
Snodgrass by his last five fixtures.
