A wasteful Dele Alli maintains his scoring form, Mesut Ozil wins the plaudits but blanks again, while injuries to Ryan Bertrand and Darren Fletcher cause early Gameweek 8 concerns. Here are the notes from Saturday’s international tussles…

Alli Nets Again

England found a way past the Maltese bus at Wembley, with Spurs midfielder Dele Alli (8.2) scoring the second goal.

The Spurs man could, and should, have had more, but his strike confirmed his blossoming form – you just wouldn’t know it from his Fantasy Premier League ownership.

Alli has scored a solid 24 points over the last four Gameweeks and yet he has consistently suffered sales. Having started the season as part of 415,753 FPL squads, Alli is now found in just over half of that figure, although he looks to have enjoyed a small gain in ownership heading into next weekend’s fixtures – the first Gameweek where he has shown an increase this season.

This trend is undoubtedly attributed to the popularity of team-mate Heung Min-Son (7.6), who has seen a big surge in his ownership (141,900 transfers in this week alone) on the back of four goals and two assists from his last four starts up front.

Spurs’ remain in the thick of the international action, and with a UEFA Champions League fixture looming, Mauricio Pochettino would not have been overly pleased to see Danny Rose (5.9) playing such a full part at Wembley.

He came on for the injured Ryan Bertrand (5.4), whose hamstring issue has already ruled him out of the Slovenia clash.

Rose has himself only just returned from a spell on the sidelines and Pochettino must now be pondering his rotation options in the light of his international minutes.

The 5.3% of FPL managers who own Rose will be hoping that he gets the nod for the trips to West Brom and Bournemouth, rather than the Champions League fixture at Bayer Leverkusen.

Bertrand Concern for Saints

Bertrand’s hamstring injury will be a major worry for Claude Puel with the club confirming that their left-back will now return to the south-coast for an assessment.

Should Bertrand face a spell on the sidelines, Puel will likely turn to Matt Targett as his replacement, although he was also nursing a minor injury which saw him miss out for England U21’s and remain with the club over this break.

Targett started the first three Premier League matches and would be of interest to FPL managers given his 4.4 price tag.

The Saints have kept three consecutive clean sheets in the league heading into their Gameweek 8 home encounter with Burnley – they’ve kept six successive shut-outs in all competitions.

Ozil sparkles but draws a blank

Things seemed to be looking up for Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil (9.5) when he was initially credited with an assist in Germany’s 3-0 win over the Czech Republic.

It soon transpired that he had in fact missed helping on the pass that led to the German opener – par for the course for a man who had 19 assists last season but has none in six league matches this campaign.

Two goals have sugared the pill for the 7.4%-owned midfielder, but his premium price is surely testing the patience of his FPL owners.

Ozil’s performance against the Czechs garnered high praise, but he could do with improved returns to back up his undoubted influence.

Domestic matches at home to Swansea City and Middlesbrough and a trip to Sunderland have a last chance saloon feel to them, with Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott continuing to offer more explosive potential in the Gunners’ camp.

McArthur on target as Fletcher pulls up

Scotland’s last-gasp draw at home to Lithuania confirmed the unlikely goalscoring form of Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur (4.9).

His late, late header was his third goal in four matches. Throw in an assist as part of an impressive 12-point haul in the 3-2 win at Sunderland and it is perhaps unsurprising that McArthur has enjoyed a mini-surge in his FPL popularity – he gained more than 28,000 owners heading into Gameweek 7.

As one budget midfield option grows in strength, another suffers a potential blow.

McArthur’s introduction came as a result of Darren Fletcher’s (4.4) withdrawal at half-time. He suffered a first-half thigh injury and is now a major doubt ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Slovakia.

That’s bad news for the well-owned West Brom veteran, who is found in 9.6% of FPL squads.

Tony Pulis will also be hugely concerned given the forthcoming schedule awaiting his side.

The Baggies face Spurs and Man City at home, along with tough trips to Liverpool and Leicester City over their next four Gameweeks.

An absence for the influential Fletcher would surely have some bearing on their chances in those matches – Fletcher has made more successful passes in the opponents’ half than any other Baggies player.

Out of Africa

Liverpool’s Sadio Mane (9.0) continued his fine start to the season going with an assist for Senegal’s opening goal in the 2-0 win over Cape Verde Islands.

The 15.0%-owned midfielder has three goals and an assist from six league starts and, once Gameweek 8’s home match with Manchester United is done, enjoy a superb run of fixtures all the way through to New Year’s Eve.

Hull City also have a prolonged run of attractive matches to come – their next stern test appears to be Spurs away in Gameweek 16 – so striker Dieumerci Mbokani’s (5.5) brace for DR Congo in a 4-0 win over Libya will have done his prospects no harm.

Mbokani made his first start for the Tigers in the 2-0 loss to Chelsea and, depending on his fatigue levels, he will be in line to retain his start for the trip to Bournemouth next weekend.

I would be tempted to move Antonio out for Son. Downgrading Williams to a 4.5. Robertson stands out with those fixtures.

Other option is to downgrade somebody to get an Arsenal defender in there.

Priority should be defence. It's a car crash as things stand.

Once defence sorted you can address Bolasie.

Agreed. Happy to take a hit but not sure defenders are worth a hit as there don't seem to be many clean sheets this year. Tempted by Walker/ fletcher. What would you recommend?

Very weak defence. I would change 2 defenders for a hit now. Perhaps one of Shaw/Baines and one of SWA defs for one 4.5 and one 5.0 defenders. Peters and Holebas are cheap decent options

A easy. Never take a hit when you have a person who will start in a game they could easily score in. Rashford is doing fine and Pool can't defend. If it wasn't for a hit yes but you're essentially betting four points that theo will score and rashford won't.

          Pick Grant
          Walker Kosc Francis Amat 3.9
Sanchez Walcott Son Coutinho De roon
          Aguero Lukaku Deeney

Loving Amat AND a 3.9. Ha ha.

Lukaku to Costa if you can stretch it. Down grade theo perhaps. Not sure you need both.

Second the Amat and 3.9 - exactly the same play I'm running to maximise value 🙂

Erm, you have an awesome team.

I'd be tempted to sidegrade to Costa if you can stretch to it?

I'd also be tempted to have Robertson from Hull instead of Francis as your 4.5 - they have good fixtures and he's apparently seeing a lot of the ball in the final third, whereas Francis is a CB now.

            Hope that helps!

Defoe could be a great differential till Lukaku gets back or use Costa if you have money. Although Costa is on four yellows.

The irony of Zlatan is that Jose would never have carried a player with his pace into a big away game historically. He would sit back and counter with the pace of martial and rashford. He may still do that, and play Zlatan almost as a false 9 for the set pieces, but there's a strong argument that he has no place in a fixture that will be played at 100 miles per hour.

Surely Jose won't rock up with that same 11 he put out last time? Will be lambs to the slaughter. Morgan and Herrer can press and harry, so those two both need to be in there with Pogba pushed forward.

He will. That wasn't my point. Just that in many ways it's not the right option for that fixture.

On the other hand pools defence is made of balsa and is terrible with crosses into the box, so it's swings ands roundabouts. As a united fan I am far more concerned of them playing Pogba and Ander in a two with no obvious screening player.

Pogba is class. But so lazy.

I've always thought Herrera is a decent player, seems like he's getting some measure of vindication now.

I expect Zlatan to continue playing for his ability to conjure a goal out of nothing - seems like Rooney (rightfully, imo) is the guy who's ended up trying not to get splinters.

Guys. At no point above did I say he would be dropped.

Calm down and learn to read.

I said that is was ironic that it was exactly the sort of game that will probably pass him by and if we're set up to counter he's essentially useless.

He will start every league game that he is fit for all season. Period.

          Hi oracles!

A or B choice please - or if you do have a burning alternative that sparks, please tell me 🙂

          Here's my XI, 2ft, 0.6 itb, :

          Pickford (Jaku)
          Williams Lovren Walker (Amat 3.9)
          Antonio Capoue Firmino Sanchez (Fletcher)
          Kaku Kun Costa

          What's the best move?

          A) Williams (City away) + Antonio (most likely fall guy) out for Bellerin and Snoddy/Shaqiri
          B) Same, but out for Walcott and Robertson/Davies

          Thanks 🙂

Snodgrass is a decent fourth mid until Christmas. Just look at those next eight fixtures.

                Just. Look. At. Them.

If Hull don't score a dozen goals across those matches, they're getting relegated!

Ha yes of course - that's why I have him down as an option! He's looking so dangerous for that timeframe as a points magnet that it's difficult to turn it down.

I might end up having to remove someone else if they're ruled out (e.g. kaku) but he's high on my watchlist as a replacement for Antonio, provided he gets a reprieve this week...

That's basically it, but I'll have to get there by removing cash from my forward line, none of whom make sense to remove atm. BUT Costa is on 4 ycs so when he gets his fifth, I'll finance the Capoue upgrade, so the plan (that will undoubtedly fail!) is:

This week = Bellerin & Snodgrass in for Williams and Antonio
When Diego gets a yc = Costa & Capoue out for Deeney(?) and Son (probably)

                  That'd rebalance the team!

Like it. Bar Wilson. Who I just hate. Never looks good when I see him. But if you have to. Rest of team is strong.

I would probably downgrade one of the 5.5 defenders to afford a rashford (crucial United cover) or a Deeney (great fixtures).

            But it's pretty good.

            Very strong.

Only hole I'd pick is Vert. He doesn't get forward and doesn't get the bonus points. Definitely not worth the 5.6.

How much have you got itb? Perhaps see if you can go for an option with decent fixtures (e.g. Robertson at Hull or something) and maybe go Wilson --> Deeney?

Yeah but you're on a wildcard not trying to make it work from a 1 or 2 transfer stand point. Walker or Toby will just score so many more points than him so if you can, get one of those. Or don't bother at all basically.

You can upgrade to Walker and move VVD to a 4.5 and do the changes above. Or still upgrade Wilson to Rashford.

Having just got back in to the top 250k though I don't really want to risk it. Ownership of Sanchez or Aguero will sway me in the end. I took two captain punts already and both failed (Benteke and Payet during weeks both got booked and didn't score!)

I'm just about where you are mate - I went up to 172k off the back of a Diego captaincy, so I'm hoping for the run to continue. Might well do Aguero, just because Everton's defence has not been exactly steadfast for the last few games, and Kun + Gameweek 8 has an okay history I suppose.

          CHIP IDEA

Super-sub: when used, you are able to choose any 1 of your bench players and sub them for any starter of your choice. This can be done after all gameweek matches are finished, the deadline to use the chip is the start of the next GW.

            Ha ha like this!

You could do a sim thing with captain. At one point in season you could choose to retrospectively switch your captain to vice captain. Would have to be limited to that or it would get crazy.

Bench points are really annoying because once the points are benched there is nothing you can do. This would be a good option imo

Everyone is so hot on arsenal defense right now. Why is that? Over the next six games, City look to have the better fixtures. Both have let in 7 goals so far. Why should I pick Bellerin over Stones?

Where to start. He's nailed for every minute of every match. Stones is being rotated already. He's the most attacking defender in the league bar maybe Coleman or Pva. Arsenal have kept more clean sheets. City keep letting in 1 in easy wins.

The only argument over the two them is price. Which is a big one granted.

Liverpool have the best fixtures and would you touch Clyne? No.

Anyone watching the cricket? Neil from the inbetweeners is doing a decent job batting at number 11 for England.
