With the second international break of the season finally behind us, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article, offering insight on the armband conundrum for the upcoming round of fixtures.

We’ll take a look at the main contenders in this week’s Captain Poll, analyse the Opta numbers and check up on the Rate My Team ratings before checking out a couple of differential options in light of the data analysis.

The Captain Poll

Alexis Sanchez holds a comfortable lead at the top of our Gameweek 8 Captain Poll as Arsenal prepare to entertain struggling Swansea.

Having navigated the internationals without incident, the Chilean gets the nod by over 34% of voters as he looks for a fourth double-figure haul in six.

The Swans have picked up one point in the previous six and new manager Bob Bradley faces a tough task of keeping the Gunners at bay.

Sergio Aguero has been selected by just 23% for Man City’s home clash with Everton.

Despite blanking away to Spurs, an average of 7.8 points per match is superior to any forward as he faces a defence without a clean sheet in three.

Diego Costa is backed to do the business by 13% as Chelsea welcome Leicester City to the Bridge.

The consistent Spain international has produced points in six of his seven league outings and is up against a Foxes defence that’s shipped 10 goals in three road trips.

Theo Walcott and Heung-Min Son complete the top five.

Walcott sits just seven points behind team-mate Sanchez ahead of Swansea’s visit and has already netted at home to Liverpool and Chelsea.

The in-demand Son has earned more new owners than any player in the Gameweek as Spurs make their way to the Hawthorns.

The South Korean has produced two goals and three bonus points in his last two away outings and faces a defence that’s conceded in each of the last four.

Nonetheless, Maurico Pochettino’s comments on rest and rotation ahead of seven matches in 23 days may deter some from captaining the in-form wideman.

Christian Benteke and Dimitri Payet are overlooked options as Palace and West Ham’s dodgy defences square up ay Selhurst Park.

The Eagles frontman has netted in three of the last four and bagged a hat-trick for Belgium in midweek, albeit against Gibraltar.

Payet was also amongst the goals for France in the last week or so, maintaining the form that’s racked up 30 points in four starts since returning from injury.

Star of the recent international break, Dusan Tadic produced two goals and four assists for Serbia – he’s another differential in the making at home to Burnley.

Similarly, only around 1% favour the likes of Liverpool trio Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane and United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic as they go head-to-head at Anfield on Monday.

Only way to get Sanchez without a hit is this:

    Sterling + Lukaku > Sanchez & Wilson

    Is this really worth it?
Otherwise I will do Sterling/Antonio to Walcott, and Rashford to Wilson.

I've contemplated the same issue. I wouldnt lose Sterling for anyone but Sanchez though - I'm toying with Antonio for Theo and Valencia for a cheaper defender.

I fear Sterling being rotated a lot during Citys tight schedule. Would like to hold Antonio for a little longer

I'm thinking of doing this. Think Sanchez is a must. Sterling and Lukaku fixtures poor. Would go for Austin instead of Wilson.

Everton and Southampton are two strong defensive teams, with West Brom and Middlesbrough also unlikely to let a ton of goals in.

De Bruyne is out this weekend and will likely be saved for the big games in midweek coming up (Barca and United among others. Without him they are far less creative, and the team is more likely to perform badly with this intense fixture list.

Lukaku has Man city and burnley away, unlikely to be many goals let in by either team. A trip to chelsea after West Ham is also unlikely to be fruitful.

Finding it hard to decide between selling Sterling/Antonio. What do you think?

    A) Antonio to Sanchez (-4)
    B) Sterling to Sanchez (-4)
    C) Go without Sanchez 1 more week!

Sell Sterling assuming you have Aguero: not 100% fit and frees up more cash.

On a wc. This is where I'm at:

    Pick, Jak
    Koscielny, Smith, Holebas, Pieters, Amat
    Sanchez, Walcott, Son, Coutinho, Capoue
    Lukaku, Deeney, Aguero

    0.1 ITB

But thinking about Costa instead of Lukaku, which would mean Fletcher instead of Capoue and downgrading one of the 4.5 defenders to a 4.0. Which way would you go?

    1. TheTinman

    Pickford
    C.Davies, Holebas, Walker
    Sanchez, Firmino, Son, Antonio
    Aguero, Lukaku, Rashford

    Mandanda, Capoue, Baines, Amat

2FT and nothing in the bank. Can anyone suggest anything? It's my exact WC team from 2 weeks ago and I don't want to get rid of any of them. Have a good feeling about Davies due to upcoming fixtures, none of those midfielders deserve to leave and decent Rashford replacements are all slightly out of reach. Guess Baines may have to be the one to make way, but he has 3/4 great fixtures after the City game. Maybe he's a rotation risk now, but I'll never forgive myself if I find out he's back on pens after I sell him. Mandanda > Grant maybe? I'm just playing Pickford every week regardless of fixture for the save points. May leave myself without a playing keeper somewhere down the line, though.

Chances of Clyne playing? My defence looks a complete mess this GW. Tempted to take a hit and solve it a bit but not sure if it's worth it.

    Clyne (MUN)
    McAuley (TOT)
    Amat (ars)
    Williams (mci)

Could do McAuley --> Bellerin -4 but I really don't like taking hits. Any advice? I'm definitely using the AoA chip.

    Wild card alternatives:

    A) Bellerin/Son/Allen(5th mid)/Tekkers

    B) Mustafi/Sterling/De Roon (5th mid)/Tekkers

    C) Mustafi/Sterling/Son(5th mid)/Diomande(bench striker)

Sanchez and Firmino nailed. Want Sterling, Son and Walcott. A bit worried about going with only Kun from City but Walcott + Son + Allen and the possibility of Bellerin may also prove good. Or 3-5-2? Thoughts?

Usually best to do the opposite of what you suggest based on last couple of pages

Cheers lads, have chadli but his next 4 are so unappealing I think I will get Iwobi as a shot in dark.

Totally forgot you couldn't swear on here!

Which isn't a surprise, really. After two long, long weeks I lost my obsession a little with FT. Anyway, I've lost my inspiration too. How's this look?

Lovren & Sterling ---> Walcott and Vertonghen

    2FTs

*sigh. I think knew that really. Cheers guys.

Genuinely thinking about losing an FT this week. No point wrecking the team just for the sake of it...

Went with Callum Wilson over Tekkers/Defoe. Please don't let me down.

Best of luck, I feel like I need to use my extra FT (I kept 2 over the break) to get him, Defoe or Deeney in.

      Would be sacrificing Rashford though...

    Subs:Foster,Capoue,Amat & Love

    My current team:
    PIckford (Jakupovic)
    Baines, Koscielny, Lovren (Holebas, Kingsley)
    Capoue, Sterling, Sanchez, Antonio (Fletcher)
    Aguero, Lukaku, Deeney

1FT and 2.5M in the bank.
At the moment I am reasonably happy especially after a 58point performance in GW7.

I have a couple of issues at the moment - Jakupovic and Kingsley haven't played the last couple of games. I'm prepared to wait to see on Kingsley giving new manager in Bradley. Jakupovic it might be time to move on. I got him at 4.1, so even if he drops, i'll not take a hit. I can wait another week on him.

Midfield, I'm thinking Sterling or Antonio to Son/Firminho/Coutinho. I am a little nervous moving Antonio given West Ham's next 2 fix. I heard that he got moved to RB in the last game. Is that true!?
If I move Sterling, at least I still have Kun for City cover. The question then becomes who to bring in for him of the three above? I could even double up with Arsenal midfield and get Walcott.

    Thoughts and opinions appreciated!

With all the uncertainties over rotation I think Capoue to Arnie would be a safe and great option

    Which would you rather?

    A) Sterling and Lukaku > Sanchez and Austin (-4)
    B) Sterling > Walcott
    C) Do nothing

    1. Worzel Gummidge
      9 years, 9 months ago

C but you really need to get Sanchez in there asap.
