We turn our backs on Gameweek 8 with the regular Digest treatment, checking in on Watford’s Greek wing-back, the blossoming cast of talent within Eddie Howe’s ranks and the mystery surrounding the big investment in a prospering Potter.

The Player

Only last week, we rolled out a Burning Question on the merits of investing in premium priced defensive options at Arsenal and Tottenham as a result of improved returns in north London.

But, seven days later, Watford’s Jose Holebas’ 15-point haul away to Middlesbrough served a timely reminder of the value still available for our five-man defences.

A switch to 5-4-1 allowed Watford to chalk up a first clean sheet of the season as the Greek international netted for the second time this term.

After eight rounds of fixtures, he leads all defenders for goal attempts and shots on target.

Moving onto 31 points – on a par with Spurs pair Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen – Holebas has earned over 44,000 new owners this week and climbed to 4.6 price point in Fantasy Premier League.

While his place on the Suspension Tightrope is frustrating, investing in the Hornets’ defender could continue to reap reward as Walter Mazzarri’s men face up to Swansea City, Hull City, Stoke and West Brom over the next six Gameweeks.

Certainly, his form, coupled with the lack of clean sheets for Arsenal and Spurs, offered food for thought for those planning on heavy defensive investment.

The Team

Bournemouth’s 6-1 home thrashing of Hull City highlighted the confidence levels currently sweeping around the Vitality Stadium.

Following back-to-back home wins over Everton and West Brom, the Cherries third straight victory in front of their own fans served up Fantasy returns right across the pitch.

There’s no doubt that Junior Stanislas was the star performer.

A 21-point haul means he’s racked up three goals and a trio of assists in three matches since being shifted onto the right flank. It’s worth noting, though, that despite converting a penalty, Stanislas remains behind Callum Wilson for spot-kick duties, according to the striker himself.

In defence, Charlie Daniels’ raids down the left brought home a goal and assist, with centre-half Steve Cook also finding the net. Factor in a couple of clean sheets in the last three home matches and that pair are now joint-fifth amongst FPL defenders.

The in-form Callum Wilson strengthened his claim as a cut-price frontman with a goal and assist – he’s now scored in three of the last five Gameweeks.

There are options aplenty on offer amongst Howe’s ever-improving unit right now and while a weekend visit from Tottenham has the potential to disrupt their momentum, the following three fixtures – against Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Stoke – could see them plunder the points again.

The Talking Point

With over 120,000 transfers in already this Gameweek, Joe Allen has become the most unexpected of sought after Fantasy assets.

A summer move to Stoke seems to have transformed the former defensive midfielder. Recently shifted into a central support berth by Mark Hughes, the impish Welshman has netted four times in the last three fixtures and is undisputedly the Potters’ in-form player ahead of a very favourable schedule.

At such a budget price point, Allen’s position in our squads is a tricky one.

As we’ve seen already this season with Etienne Capoue, there’s almost a reluctance to start our cut-priced midfielders, as if, regardless of form, they should be no more than back-up options off the bench.

Furthermore, can we really rely on a player who has never scored more than four times in a single season?

Certainly, Allen’s current conversion rate of 40% looks unsustainable and the player even acknowledges his own surprise at his tally so far.

As discussed in last night’s ScoutCast, Allen’s current role as a Fantasy asset is troubling.

Does he really have the staying power to provide a valid fourth midfielder option? Given the current landscape, with the likes of Adam Lallana and Theo Walcott offering extreme value in the sub-8.0 bracket, that seems a questionable strategy.

Equally, if a shift to 3-5-2 is behind Allen’s popularity, you have to question whether that’s a wise move given the apparent value offered by the aforementioned Callum Wilson and Southampton’s Charlie Austin as third strikers.

We’ve already seen a move to invest big funds in our defences questioned by Holebas’ returns – making it all the more puzzling as to why active FPL managers are so quick to swoop for Allen.

Perhaps the Welshman is being seen purely as a money-maker; a means of generating 0.1 or more following the stagnation of Capoue.

  2. Will pep ruin aguero as an fpl asset?

Is Guardiola in the process of ruining Aguero as a FPL asset?

There is a worrying subtext to the Aguero benchings in the last 2 City games. Worrying for FPL managers anyway. Aguero has been the go-to striker and captain in FPL ever since Suarez was at Liverpool. City were a team built around him. He was reliable and prolific. But it may be that's not good enough for Guardiola,

Pep has a track record of not especially liking out-and-out strikers. Eto'o scored 36 goals in 52 games in Guardiola's first season. Then he was sold amidst rumours of dissension between player and manager. Not that he was past his best, mind you. 2 seasons later he scored 37 goals in 53 games for Inter.

Zlatan was the replacement. He lasted one season (21 goals in 45 games) before insisting on leaving after calling Guardiola a "coward" and saying that Pep was filling "a Ferrari with diesel" and that "he should have bought a Fiat".

Next up was David Villa, considered one of the best strikers in the world at that time. This time, Guardiola had what he wanted, a more "malleable" player. He often played Villa wide with Messi in the "false #9" position. Worked great for Barcelona of course. But Villa's goal output suffered, down from 59 goals in 88 games in his last 2 seasons at Valencia to 48 goals in 119 games for Barça.

Same story when Guardiola went to Bayern. Mandzukic was the in-place striker and had been pivotal in Bayern's run to the treble (including CL) the season before Pep arrived. He lasted one season before leaving, saying "the playing style of Guardiola does not suit me".

Lewandowski next. Well, Lewandowski was 25 and just coming into his prime. He had been prolific at Dortmund (94 goals in 144 games over the previous 3 seasons). And actually Lewandowski is very complimentary about Guardiola, crediting Pep with making him a "more complete" player. But the detail of this is interesting. "I have become more confident in different positions, I move more intelligently without the ball, my defensive skills are sharper and I am much more effective helping others find space. He sometimes puts me on the left wing. It’ll never be my favourite position but I still do my job..."

And there's the rub. Lewandowski had 25 goals in 49 games in his first season at Bayern under Pep. A worse ratio than he had at Dortmund but playing for a much more dominant team. It did improve in his 2nd season but only back to the levels you would expect.

So, Aguero... Here are some of the things Guardiola has said about one of the best 3 strikers in the world: "He knows I want more and he can play better." "It’s not enough to receive the ball from his team mates, he has to help us in the first press and run a lot and help us with movement. When that happens, you are involved in the defensive tasks and the offensive".

And this is Kun's take on it: "I have to help to mark, to help defend and attack". "Pep is very picky about everything, the good thing is that I'm getting used to him and automatically going straight in to pressing the centre-backs." This is not to say that Aguero is unhappy, from what he has said so far he isn't. But that's not the point really.

So, I wouldn't be crass enough to think I know better than Guardiola. Not about players, not about how to improve them, not about what's best for City. Of course not. But I do know better than him about FPL (unless his pseudonym is Ville Ronka). And that's the only perspective I am looking from.

Guardiola changes players and he changes teams. We have been used to a City built around Aguero. His FPL returns have reflected that. Is that what Guardiola wants? I don't think so. He wants Aguero to do different things. He wants possession and control. This, after all, is the manager who said his dream was to have 100% of the possession, a team made up entirely of midfielders. “Midfielders are intelligent players who have to think about the team as a whole: they’re selfless players who understand the game better than anyone.” And that was the reason he gave for benching Aguero tonight. Purely tactical. Pep's way or the highway.

I don't know what the answer is. But one thing is for sure, the Aguero we are used to may not be the Aguero we are now going to get. Still the same talent, still the same finishing skill, that has gone nowhere. But expected to "run" and "press" and "defend" more. Capable of being benched when it suits his manager's tactical plan. At 13.1m in FPL, Aguero represents a huge investment. It's an investment that is beginning to have a small question mark over it for me.

A slight question about his future output or future game time and he's gone. At 13m he's got to be assured of points in 80-90% of games or he's simply not worth it.

Very good post and it is very true. We have seen it at times this season, a couple of games in fact I remember earlier on in the season where aguero was completely anonymous whilst sterling/KDB ran the show. Aguero was dropping deeper sometimes into wide positions.

If he is being asked to play a different role at times this season then this could have a big impact on aguero as an fpl option.

The fact that aguero is no longer guaranteed a spot in the team now is worrying. Yes, it was one game but it was a huge game and for Pep to prefer KDB over Aguero does say quite a bit.

I will be monitoring aguero, another benching and people will start to get twitchy. Also, will be interesting to see if he's still on penalties

Great post Ruth! Aguero > KDB frees up alot of funds to invest in another premium striker...Vardy's fixtures are turning favourable...later down the road, Kane will also come into consideration.

Fantastic, a lot of this was going through my mind but your detail seems spot on and very informative. There has to be a question mark over captaining him most weeks for the reasons that you've mentioned above, and the fact that there are a lot of viable alternatives this season!

I have had a fear of this extra workload on kun and whether his body will be able to stand up to it since the start of the season.

The only good thing about this unknown is that it is an easy steps down to any other striker. The bit you ate missing in all of this too is howany goals messing scored under him playing a false 9. Kun is much closer to Messi than lewandowski.

I'd be more afraid of breakages than goals when he plays as if he plays he'll score imo and hell score Big!

The 13.1 price tage has indeed become small question mark, but the immediate captaincy has become an even bigger question mark in my eyes.

For example this week, is he an immediate captain option? No Is he still a good option? Yes
Interested to hear your thoughts regarding captaincy for this week and for weeks to come while we've still got Aguero in our teams.

Maybe we should follow Guardiolas tactics and cover City from midfield. De Bruyne rather than Aguero and rely on Lukaku and Costa/Kane for our striker output. If Aguero cannot be trusted to start how can we captain him.
Plus when he does start, we want him poaching, not being deployed as a decoy runner

As strange as it seems, a blank V Southampton could see many make a short term switch to Ibrahimovic for that home match with Burnley

The only match where Aguero would be the top captain choice is Gw 11 at home to Boro. However that is Four days after the return match of Barcelona where he surely will play. How can we be sure he will play against Boro when pep has already shown a willingness to start Ibeanacho.

Gameweek Eleven could well be a great time to make the Sanchez to De Bruyne move as Arsenal face Tottenham and Chelsea while City have Boro and Palace, he would also provide an alternative captain option for Gw Eleven for those removing Aguero.

Really interesting post, I didn't know much about Guardiola's record with his strikers. Also, it is a good time to question Aguero's seeming essential nature since he has produced in inky 3/6 FPL matches and stung many of his owners with his gw8 PK debacle.

However, the evidence here so far might be based on Pep's history and the pair's comments more so than the action on the pitch this season.

          Gw1 Scores, Max bonus
          Gw2 Brace, Max bonus
          Gw3 Blank
I watched this match and IMO West Ham absolutely capitulated to the might City machine -- they double and triple teamed Aguero while the mids ran riot. They just gave up and allowed very talented players to crush them while they neutralized the one special player in the opposition. However, Aguero still manages 5 shots, including 4 in the box.
          Suspended
          Suspended
          Gw6 Brace, Max bonus
          Gw7 Blank
I did not see any of this match, but I did notice in the match stats that he had 7 shots, 4 itb. Would love to hear more about how he did against a strong defense in Spurs.
Gw8 Ugh, from an FPL captainer's perspective.

I see 3 excellent performances, 1 awful but unlucky one, and 2 near hauls.

The other bit of history that is relevant here is that Aguero, like Pep, has done this before. A run of blanks, often when he is frustratingly close to hauls, and doubt creeps in. Suarez was like this too at times, and it was a rough watch as an owner or captainer. That's how good they are -- we want the hauls every week and grow to expect or even feel we are entitled to them at that price. Suarez gave us as close to a full season of it as we could hope for. But I still don't mind paying that price because of what he can do, not what he always does. The extra money comes with extra potential, so 13m seems fair to me.

Make no mistake, your post is very insightful and certainly is a clear warning to us that change might be happening. As someone with limited knowledge of European football, this take on Pep was really informative. For me, though, there needs to be more evidence on the pitch and in his performance before I would even consider letting go of the highest ceiling in FPL.

Now if I can just find that 6th Midfielder chip so I can shoehorn in De Bruyne...

For me it's time to put the armband back on him I think. I gave him a miss last week because of the likelihood of a benching.
Southampton give up plenty of chances in the box, especially away from St Mary's. They just haven't conceded many so far. In addition, they play on Thursday in the San Siro while City have an extra day to prepare. I think Aguero can take advantage of that, there aren't many deadlier penalty-box finishers around.

I'm still inclined to captain Aguero this weekend IF it's clear he will start (wait for the pressers). But there's definitely more doubt in my mind now.

          Great post Ruth.

With city short term fixtures i think most serious players will hold through these. Captaincy is now a doubt, however.

But it is one to monitor for sure, if rotation becomes significant then he needs to he sold.

Messi is obviously a striker who had a pretty decent goal scoring record under Pep.

Can Aguero adapt and still keep scoring? His goals per game under Pep so far is certainly still exceptional.

          Fantastic post.

I'll be watching and would consider taking him out eventually, but (like others have said) City will still score many goals, he'll still score lots. Will they score enough to make up for Aguero's decreased involvement in the goals? Maybe. We'll see. Sterling and Aguero are still the two I want in the side, right now, but one for us all to monitor.

Post of the month. Seriously considering moving him on after this weekend if he does little again.

Kevin looks much more integral to the way city play and at 1.5 cheaper, allows more flexibility with the squad whilst still covering City attack.

Aguero and Payet after this game week for Kevin and Costa is suddenly very tempting.

Great post. It has just about convinced me that's it's Sanchez rather than Aguero for the captaincy this weekend, and if that continues, I don't think I can justify 13mil on him any more.

Great post, follows on nicely from the discussion yesterday about Aguero not being automatic first choice for the captaincy most weeks.

The key to monitor is KDB's pitch time, role, form and underlying stats. Currently against Middlesbrough I'm starting to think that the Belgian may be the best option.

          A situation to monitor definitely.

          Great post!

Few weeks ago we were discussing the chance of Aguero scoring 30-40 goals this season.

          What's happened...

Nice post, but too soon to jump to conclusions.

Aguero was left on the bench away at Barcelona in an attempt to make City more solid by swamping the midfield. If he starts being left on the bench away in the Premier League, I'll be worried. So far in their two hardest away games - Spurs and Man U - he's started.

Evidence in the Premier League so far is that City will score goals, Aguero will score goals, Aguero will get lots of chances, Aguero may be rested occasionally (no change there to previous seasons).

If Aguero stops getting goals and chances I'll take him out of the team.

He's still going to get some massive hauls over the course of the season. The trick will be to predict when they're coming and captain him. Arguably going without Aguero is also a very valid tactic with KDB as cover, but the weeks where he does get the big hauls will really sting.

Get write up NZ and very, very interesting thoughts.

The guy leading my ML is 8th in the world and he hasn't had Aguero all season. So it proves he isn't maybe the must have we all assume he is.

I just wonder if we are overreacting a bit on this Aguero thing. We need to read the two benchings in context. On Saturday he was coming back from international duty, where he had even picked up a knock. He started from the bench just like Sanchez on GW4. And yesterday he was playing against the best team in the world, it's not shameful for Pep to have been a little more conservative and played a more flexible team.

Lewandowski is actually the good comparison to make. Last season he scored 42 goals, including 30 in the league, that's more than he ever did at Dortmund. The strikers that had to adapt, or leave, when he was at Barça, were playing with Messi. They had to adapt to a team built around Messi, not to some ironclad philosophy. This time around he doesn't have Messi, just like he did not have Messi and Bayern, so he will build around his best players, and Aguero is his best player.

As long as he doesn't get injured, I think it's more than safe that Aguero will start 95% of league matches (rest around important UCL games or internationals) and keep his output of a goal per game.

I'm not over-reacting I don't think. I mean, I'm not about to immediately remove him from my team. Just trying to read the runes about what the case is.

As others have observed, however, it does give you pause when considering captaincy. That's a more immediate factor.

          Great write up.

As soon as I saw he was benched again yesterday I started thinking back to what Mark had mentioned on the Scoutcast and perhaps there is something in it.

It's making me re-think captaining him right now, but as for getting rid? Not yet, as you say we don't have the full answer but it's certainly worth questioning.

Will be interesting to see how this one progresses.

Great post! I'll hold on to Aguero for a while longer though, but he does have to outshine the rest of the bunch to defend his price tag.

Just to shed some light on the Lewandowski example though; he said that he only in his second season realised that he had become a better striker with better movement because of what he had learned playing on the wing during his first season. Pep played him out wide to release a further potential that he saw in Lewandowski.

There are problems with every single one, especially while the CL is ongoing. They can all be rotated, Guardiola is wedded to it.

One of my friends is in a ML where the loser last season had to go to Download festival on their own and post photos of them 'enjoying themselves' on Facebook.

Obviously if you like the kind of music at download it's not really a punishment but none of them do like it.

The year before the loser had to do a topless photo shoot (they are all guys) and post photos on Fbook.

This year, the loser has to catch a national express bus from lands end to John I groats and back on their own.

Leicester/Stoke 6 week rotation, all home.

CPL, SWA, WBA, BOU, MID, BUR

              City next 6:

SOT, wba, MID, cpl, bur, CHE

Reckon a Morgan/Pieters rotation can outscore Stones over that 6?
Or in other words is Stones to a LEI Def worth a FT?

Did Benteke + Antonio > Walcott + Austin -4 whilst drunk last night... could've been a lot worse?

When I was pissed I woke up the following morning to find a -32 and Bony in my team. Horrific. Yours is positively boring by comparison !!!

I had a - 28 in GW4 (or may have been GW5) for exactly the same reason.

Never tinker with your team after a few glasses of beer or wine!

cmon really. i think its a great shout. Sanchez will probably get rested after playing 90 minutes tonight and Allen will get a hatty against Hull. Or maybe im high or something.

Time to get in KDB folks!

He's gonna rack up some serious points over the next few gws imo. Getting a similar feeling like the one I had for Lukaku before his good run of fixtures started.

                Differential as well.

Can only afford him if I ship Sanchez and that doesn't look like smart decision right now.
