Man City inspire, Arsenal perspire and the Ilkay Gundogan (5.6) bandwagon goes into overdrive on a night of high entertainment in the Champions League.

Manchester City 3 Barcelona 1

If attack is the best form of defence, then this was one of the finest rearguard actions of the season.

A high tempo, relentlessly open encounter went the way of City thanks to their relentless industry and threat from midfield, with a brace from Gundogan and superb Kevin De Bruyne (10.7) free-kick earning the home side a deserved three points.

Gundogan’s fourth goal in as many days has added 0.1 to his price and close to 200,000 new Fantasy Premier League new owners.

The German could earn starts against Middlesbrough at home and then Crystal Palace and Burnley away either side of the international break. That should see his 6.1% ownership rise further, providing he makes the first XI against ‘Boro.

De Bruyne has played just 68 minutes of the last two domestic matches following injury but was back to his dynamic best against Barca, while Raheem Sterling (8.3) provided an assist in a lively display.

David Silva (8.7) and Sergio Aguero (13.1), who was brought back into the Euro fold after a benching in Barcelona, also recorded assists.

City coach Pep Guardiola made three changes from the side that swept past West Brom at the weekend, with Willy Caballero (4.9) replacing the suspended Claudio Bravo (5.5) in goal, Pablo Zabaleta (4.7) returning at right back after injury and De Bruyne in for Nolito (8.7).

Zabaleta added experience to a defence in which Aleksandar Kolarov (5.8) was outstanding, while Fernandinho’s (5.4) discipline freed up Gundogan to drift forward to devastating effect. The Brazilian later limped off with a knock and is now a doubt for the Middlesbrough match on Saturday.

Saturday’s team-sheet is now the main concern for Fantasy managers.

Given that there is a break to follow, Guardiola is likely to prioritise fielding a full-strength side, although he does have a wealth of options to mix things up – one or two changes do look likely.

Nolito, Jesus Navas and Leroy Sane are all options in the attacking positions that will threaten the likes of Sterling and Gundogan.

Sterling was preserved with 20 minutes remaining, indicating that he would seem in line to start once again. Despite his form, Gundogan’s starting role is less assured, with Nolito perhaps introduced on the flank, shifting De Bruyne back to a central role.

Man City XI: Caballero, Zabaleta, Otamendi, Stones, Kolarov, Fernandinho (Fernando 60), Sterling (Navas 71), De Bruyne (Nolito 89), Gundogan, Silva, Aguero.
Subs not used: Gunn, Kompany, Clichy, Iheanacho.

Ludogorets Razgrad 2 Arsenal 3

Arsenal booked their place in the last 16, but had to go the long way round to do it.

Goals from Granit Xhaka (5.2), Olivier Giroud (8.8) – his third in two matches – and Mesut Ozil’s (9.6) fine individual effort wiped out a two-goal deficit to give the Gunners a fighting chance of actually winning their Champions League group for a change.

Ozil, Aaron Ramsey (7.6) and Mohamed Elneny (4.6) provided the assists.

Boss Arsene Wenger was again without the injured trio of Theo Walcott (8.0), Santi Cazorla (7.2) and Nacho Monreal (6.0) and chose not to risk Hector Bellerin (6.6), who picked up a knock in the weekend win at Sunderland.

Xhaka, Giroud, Ramsey and Carl Jenkinson (5.0) came in, with David Ospina (4.8) retaining his Euro place in goal.

The form of the returning Giroud is of particular concern to the 25.3% who own Alexis Sanchez (11.4).

The Chilean went back to the left flank to accommodate the striker, and with Spurs at home and then Man United away up next for the Gunners, the attacking threat of the six-goal Sanchez suddenly looks compromised.

Ramsey’s first start since Gameweek 1 also thickens the plot, with competition in midfield a boost for Wenger but an added complication for FPL managers with Walcott and Cazorla in their squads.

Wenger stated post-match against Sunderland that Giroud’s future as a starter could be limited to a 4-4-2 set-up, alongside Sanchez. Last night’s tactical shift immediately compromised that statement and illustrated the options available to the Gunners boss.

Nonetheless, we should expect Sanchez to lead the attack again on Sunday, with Walcott likely to return having been pictured back in training just 48 hours ago.

Ramsey is now clearly a factor, although he much prefers a central role and cannot match the in-form Walcott’s thrust and goal threat. Wenger has talked up Walcott in tandem with Sanchez the striker as a “good working unit” and, for now, that surely remains his first choice option.

There’s little doubt that the pair will have to maintain their output to hold those current roles, however. Perhaps no bad thing for owners of Sanchez and Walcott.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Jenkinson, Mustafi, Koscielny, Gibbs, Coquelin, Xhaka (Elneny 87), Ramsey (Oxlade-Chamberlain 75), Özil, Sánchez (Iwobi 90), Giroud.
Subs not used: Cech, Gabriel, Holding, Maitland-Niles.

This whole gundogan thing, the way I see it:
Hes a cheap mid that I wont be afraid to bench.
Has great fixtures and playing for a very attacking team.
    Price is rising fast.

Ill admit hes a bit of a punt, but at that price not much of a risk. If he fails ill swap him out for someone in around his bracket, add him to the list of unsuccessful short term punts, and will have probably earned a couple of rises.

But if he continues and gets say 2g and 2a over the next obliging few fixtures and then gets a couple of blanks, then ill happily take that. Hes 5.6m for a reason after all. So even if his returns fall to a goal/assist every other game with maybe 3-4 more hauls throughout the season, then at 5.6 he represents fantastic value.

    1. pompeyfan
      10 years, 8 days ago

agree. But the hype on here is leading to people taking a hit to get him in, to replace other decent options, which imo is crazy.

      1. Pegboy
        10 years, 8 days ago

^This^ Decent option, but a low priority transfer that definitely isn't worth a hit.

I'd only be considering it if I had 2FTs and little else to worry about.

        1. Ten Season Wonder
          10 years, 8 days ago

          Hits / schmits

-4 can be clawed back over the rest of the season.

This is too good an opportunity to pass up in my humble opinion.

      2. Pochecinno
        10 years, 8 days ago

This is crazy. Totally agree. I've seen a few Walcott to Gundogan hits. It is madness.

      3. Venom Snake
        10 years, 8 days ago

The only reason why I brought him in was because of Arnie getting suspended. If not for that no way I would have taken the hit

        1. Pochecinno
          10 years, 8 days ago

          Exactly. No-brainer in your scenario.

          1. Venom Snake
            10 years, 8 days ago

If Capoue had a better fixture I would have even benched Arnie tbh

      4. Stats Don\'t Lie
        10 years, 8 days ago

That is a fair point. I got him in to replace an underperforming son and free up budget for hazard/kdb or another big hitter.

    2. Pochecinno
      10 years, 8 days ago

You don't need to justify. With his form, fixtures, the way City are lined up and the profit to be made it really is a no-brainer.

The only nay-saying you will get is from those who jumped on Allen first or those who don't have free transfers to get him in.

    3. AJ24
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I brought him in as I had to get rid of Snodgrass, already own Allen. Just seemed a good option, alternating Gundogan and Allen as 4th Midfielder.

Will it give me a headache? Yes. But having a headache can be a good thing compared to not.

As you say, do not udnerstand people taking hits on Walcott to Gundogan!

    4. Pumpkinhead - I'm ITK …
      10 years, 8 days ago

It's nothing new though. Midfield gets double figures. Site goes into meltdown. Not worth a hit. If you contemplating it just think for it to be worth the risk he probably needs more than a goal. Only making a couple of points at best if he scores 1. Risk reward isn't worth it

    5. Ten Season Wonder

What's with all the Coutinho love?
Isn't he a high risk to be rested in GW12?

probably but those Liv mids look deadly

I have him, and to be honest he probably could have a rest from all the points he's been scoring for my team.

I think it's more the traveling aspect too . Both him and firmino at risk imo. Rondon only played 90 mins once and came back on the Thursday. Wasn't considered fit after the long flight

        10 years, 8 days ago

Importance of a solid bench and 5th mid like Allen.

What woud you lads say about this team:

    Heaton Jak
    Fuchs Smith Holebas Brunt Amat
    Sanchez Hazard Chadli Cout Allen
    Lukaku Austin Aguero

To get this team i would need to sell Mane & Walcot...

      No point talking in riddles.

Who are you transferring in for them?

      1. Kolarov Fpl Legend

        Walcott & Mane > Hazard & Chadli

Personally I like the players you have unless Walcott's ruled out.

When Kane is fit, will you fit him into your team and at who's expense? Seeing how most would have some form of Kun, Lukaku, Costa, Haz, double Pool, Sanchez

Not for me, unsustainable output, don't fancy players for FPL in the double pivot and also as cliché as it may be KDB playing in the 10 with Sterling/Silva in the team will force him back a bit. Fernandinho out for the next game could force him to play more defensively too. Great for price changes though.

  27. IWR
    10 years, 8 days ago

    Heaton (Pickford)
    Kosc, Holebas, Smith (Pieters, Amat)
    Ozil, Walcott, Mane, Firm (Allen)
    Aguero, Lukaku, Austin

    0.9 ITB, anything worth a -4?

    1. Ten Season Wonder
      10 years, 8 days ago

      Needs Alexis mate

I'd want to play Allen against a Reidless WHM defence. AOA?

No cash for Alexis and AOA used two weeks back

Is it actually possible to get the midfield badly wrong at the moment?
There are about 20 mids with over 5 PPG and form stats to match.
What should be the criteria for changing mids at the moment - price changes, fixtures?

  29. Ten Season Wonder
    10 years, 8 days ago

People who are worried about taking hits,

    Hits / schmits

-4 can be clawed back over the rest of the season.

Not a big deal in my humble opinion 🙂

    1. Mini Mane Mo
      10 years, 8 days ago

How many is too excessive in your opinion? -12?

      1. Pumpkinhead - I'm ITK …
        10 years, 8 days ago

        8

I see not immediate reason for 8 unless you don't have a full team

      2. Ten Season Wonder

just the odd -4 hit here and there thats all

      I took a -12 this GW

      OUT
      Payet
      Walcott
      Son
      Capoue

      IN
      Hazard
      Coutinho
      Gundogan
      Allen

Worked wonders for my squad value.
