Man City inspire, Arsenal perspire and the Ilkay Gundogan (5.6) bandwagon goes into overdrive on a night of high entertainment in the Champions League.

Manchester City 3 Barcelona 1

If attack is the best form of defence, then this was one of the finest rearguard actions of the season.

A high tempo, relentlessly open encounter went the way of City thanks to their relentless industry and threat from midfield, with a brace from Gundogan and superb Kevin De Bruyne (10.7) free-kick earning the home side a deserved three points.

Gundogan’s fourth goal in as many days has added 0.1 to his price and close to 200,000 new Fantasy Premier League new owners.

The German could earn starts against Middlesbrough at home and then Crystal Palace and Burnley away either side of the international break. That should see his 6.1% ownership rise further, providing he makes the first XI against ‘Boro.

De Bruyne has played just 68 minutes of the last two domestic matches following injury but was back to his dynamic best against Barca, while Raheem Sterling (8.3) provided an assist in a lively display.

David Silva (8.7) and Sergio Aguero (13.1), who was brought back into the Euro fold after a benching in Barcelona, also recorded assists.

City coach Pep Guardiola made three changes from the side that swept past West Brom at the weekend, with Willy Caballero (4.9) replacing the suspended Claudio Bravo (5.5) in goal, Pablo Zabaleta (4.7) returning at right back after injury and De Bruyne in for Nolito (8.7).

Zabaleta added experience to a defence in which Aleksandar Kolarov (5.8) was outstanding, while Fernandinho’s (5.4) discipline freed up Gundogan to drift forward to devastating effect. The Brazilian later limped off with a knock and is now a doubt for the Middlesbrough match on Saturday.

Saturday’s team-sheet is now the main concern for Fantasy managers.

Given that there is a break to follow, Guardiola is likely to prioritise fielding a full-strength side, although he does have a wealth of options to mix things up – one or two changes do look likely.

Nolito, Jesus Navas and Leroy Sane are all options in the attacking positions that will threaten the likes of Sterling and Gundogan.

Sterling was preserved with 20 minutes remaining, indicating that he would seem in line to start once again. Despite his form, Gundogan’s starting role is less assured, with Nolito perhaps introduced on the flank, shifting De Bruyne back to a central role.

Man City XI: Caballero, Zabaleta, Otamendi, Stones, Kolarov, Fernandinho (Fernando 60), Sterling (Navas 71), De Bruyne (Nolito 89), Gundogan, Silva, Aguero.
Subs not used: Gunn, Kompany, Clichy, Iheanacho.

Ludogorets Razgrad 2 Arsenal 3

Arsenal booked their place in the last 16, but had to go the long way round to do it.

Goals from Granit Xhaka (5.2), Olivier Giroud (8.8) – his third in two matches – and Mesut Ozil’s (9.6) fine individual effort wiped out a two-goal deficit to give the Gunners a fighting chance of actually winning their Champions League group for a change.

Ozil, Aaron Ramsey (7.6) and Mohamed Elneny (4.6) provided the assists.

Boss Arsene Wenger was again without the injured trio of Theo Walcott (8.0), Santi Cazorla (7.2) and Nacho Monreal (6.0) and chose not to risk Hector Bellerin (6.6), who picked up a knock in the weekend win at Sunderland.

Xhaka, Giroud, Ramsey and Carl Jenkinson (5.0) came in, with David Ospina (4.8) retaining his Euro place in goal.

The form of the returning Giroud is of particular concern to the 25.3% who own Alexis Sanchez (11.4).

The Chilean went back to the left flank to accommodate the striker, and with Spurs at home and then Man United away up next for the Gunners, the attacking threat of the six-goal Sanchez suddenly looks compromised.

Ramsey’s first start since Gameweek 1 also thickens the plot, with competition in midfield a boost for Wenger but an added complication for FPL managers with Walcott and Cazorla in their squads.

Wenger stated post-match against Sunderland that Giroud’s future as a starter could be limited to a 4-4-2 set-up, alongside Sanchez. Last night’s tactical shift immediately compromised that statement and illustrated the options available to the Gunners boss.

Nonetheless, we should expect Sanchez to lead the attack again on Sunday, with Walcott likely to return having been pictured back in training just 48 hours ago.

Ramsey is now clearly a factor, although he much prefers a central role and cannot match the in-form Walcott’s thrust and goal threat. Wenger has talked up Walcott in tandem with Sanchez the striker as a “good working unit” and, for now, that surely remains his first choice option.

There’s little doubt that the pair will have to maintain their output to hold those current roles, however. Perhaps no bad thing for owners of Sanchez and Walcott.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Jenkinson, Mustafi, Koscielny, Gibbs, Coquelin, Xhaka (Elneny 87), Ramsey (Oxlade-Chamberlain 75), Özil, Sánchez (Iwobi 90), Giroud.
Subs not used: Cech, Gabriel, Holding, Maitland-Niles.

I'm doing ok at the minute but I feel at the price I need to bring gundogan in. So I'm trading McArthur and vergonghen , got about £5m left for a defender . The value for him over defenders seems real value , unfortunately I'm looking at probably shawvross or huth

They average 1.5 points a game as oppose to at least 1.9 per game every other month. They've got tough fixtures though

don't consider ARS points/game. the more critical stat is how many goals have they scored/conceded compared to other months. still have not see that stat posted. a team's points/game is irrelevant imo

they may struggle, but that doesn't mean that Walcott won't score heavily.

Personally though I think the stats are a coincidence and not statistically significant

I did it based on fixtures and gives me £2.2m in bank to bring in Hazard for one of my 2 Liverpool midfielders when fixtures turn. Have Allen as 5th midfielder to come in if Gundogan does not get played. Also an opportunity to increase value a bit (but that in itself not a good reason)

    Advice?

    A) Sell Valencia for max 5.8 def (who?)
    B) Do Sterling to Hazard this week

    Foster, Pickford
    Valencia, Williams, Evans, Friend, Amat
    Walcott, Gundogan, Firmino, Sterling, Barry
    Aguero, Lukaku, Costa

I am not a big fan for taking hits, but I think that you it would be a good idea to because you are going to have 3 Man City attackers, which will be unlikely to get points from each one of them.

My biggest mistakes this season have been jumping on bandwagons because of hype and worry of price rising too much. Most of these are inevitably short lived.

I was on Zlatan and stuck with him before having to get rid. Antonio has come back to bite me after I thought he would be a revelation. Capoue has been blanking and Son hasn't scored more than 3 points since I drafted him in.

It's all about jumping on the right bandwagon at the right time. This week I've had the dilemma of finding a Snodgrass replacement and narrowed it down to Allen vs Gundogan. I myself have gone for Allen as I think he has proven he is capable of putting points on the board consistently now. Gundogan's bundesliga stats make me uneasy that he is just having a good couple of games. Although... not to forget Allen has only recently decided to step forward as a realistic fantasy asset.

      antonio

Looks to me like your biggest problem is being too slow to dump deadwood for the bandwagons 😉

    4. Pierce34
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

You have to know when to get on and off the bandwagons. I've made mistakes and I've had good calls as well. For example, I had Zlatan in the beginning when he was scoring, then sold at 11.9 for 0.2 profit when he started blanking. I never viewed Capoue as a 4th mid so I held for the rises, then sold for Allen when Allen was 4.8. Similarly, I don't intend to play Allen as anything other than 5th mid and will sell once his price looks like it's about to drop (though I'll happily keep if he continues to score).

On the other hand, I stubbornly played Stones every game just because he played for a big team and held on to Antonio for far too long... And when I did sell it was for Walcott for -4 when Walcott blanked and then got injured.

Not sure where the lesson is in all this - maybe the pattern shows that I was rewarded when I played the team value game and didn't worry about points.

Yeah be careful with past midfield stats, Allen has scored as many goals for Stoke after 9 games as he did for Liverpool after 90 games, so to be worried about Gundogans past stats does have a flip side. I've watched a fair few of both of their games and they are playing very forward and getting into the box, that's enough for me at the moment.

    Grant (Jakupovic)
    Koscielny Valencia Holebas (Evans Amat)
    Sanchez Mane Sterling Antonio Capoue
    Aguero Lukaku (Diomande)
    2 FT 0.9m ITB

I am currently thinking about going Valencia and Mane > Fuchs and Coutinho, and maybe taking a -4 hit to get Heaton in for Jakupovic. Are there any suggestions on what I should be doing with my current team? (current rank is 64k if that helps with hits etc).

Trying to fit Coutinho alongside Firmino in this team (have 2 FT) :

    Heaton, Pickford
    Lovren, Holebas, Francis, Kone, Amat
    Sanchez, Firmino, Sterling, Walcott, Capoue
    Aguero, Lukaku, Benteke

I'm thinking of those moves :

    A. No hits :
    Walcott -> Coutinho
    Benteke -> Austin

    B. 4pt hit THIS gameweek :
    Walcott -> Coutinho
    Sterling -> Allen
    Kone -> Azpi/Alonso

B would allow me to upgrade my defence which, let's face it, looks pretty horrible at the moment, but I'm worried about getting rid of Sterling even as his numbers are still quite good.

With all the Gundogan, Allen, Hazard and Coutinho craziness going on are people forgetting other options like KdB? To me he's the one to have going forward. Good fixtures and a plays in a team that can smash it against anyone.

On a wider scale is points chasing and team value enhancing gone into overdrive? Do we no longer even try to look for the players that will score highly in the future and just fall into the comfort of picking players that did well the previous week?

Not sure I'd like to triple up on City's attacking assets and at the moment it isn't even an option for me with Stones in my team.

Think the problem for many including me is fitting him in

I have the same problem with Kevin but would really like him in my team.

Yes, but the likes of Allen and Gundogan induce craziness because of their price. Coutinho looks like he has the potential to be a fantasy darling and Hazard is a past fantasy darling. Agree with KDB though. It just makes the game interesting with all these options

Yeah I have Coutinho and Allen myself and they've done well for me thus far. I'm just questioning the ongoing hit taking for bringing last weeks best players in and you can be sure that once those aforementioned players blank a few times there will be mass sales in order to get the new toy in.

        Current team (zero funds)

        Heaton (Jaku)
        Holebas Smith Pieters (Hernandez Amat)
        Sanchez Coutinho Walcott* Shaqiri* (Capoue)
        Lukaku Aguero Costa

If both * fit, save FT?
        Other things I was considering...
Lukaku to Austin to move funds into defence.
        Both * to Allen & Firmino (-4).
        Thoughts?

I'd use one on changing one of those mids and the other on ridding yourself of an on playing defender

Think I'm two yellow cards away from having only one playing defender so yeah, that should probably be my priority. Shaq may have to go for Allen, and Hernandez to Brunt. Some hits to ponder.

If team value is all that, should I drop Siggy for Gundogan then? No other pressing issues. Only Aguero from city at the moment.

if for free, yes. not convinced by Swans this year, but Siggy could still deliver decent returns

Not depserately. I'm more interested in him than Allen though. Purely due to the team he's in.

        Good day one and all,

I never thought I'd say this, but I actually don't regret the 16points. Yup 16 POINTS HIT I took on Sunday night. I feel it just may pay off. Here's my new look side>

        Boruc (Pickford)
        Blind Lovren Pieters (Holebas Amat)
        Sanchez Firminio Coutinho Gund (Allen)
        Aguero Lukaku Costa

What you reckon - not too shabby?
