After looking at the sides with the kindest upcoming schedules over the next four-to-six Gameweeks, we now turn our attention to the teams who look destinted for a challenging start to 2017.

There looks to be no light at the end of the tunnel for both Swansea City and Hull City, while Chelsea’s stiffening schedule should test Antonio Conte’s side at both ends of the pitch.

Swansea City

(BOU, cpl, ARS, liv, SOT, mci)

The Swans have lurched into another crisis, with the 4-1 defeat to West Ham United bringing an end to Bob Bradley’s brief reign in charge.

While in the short-term, matches against Bournemouth, and to a lesser extent Crystal Palace, mean Gylfi Sigurdsson may earn a stay of execution in many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) squads, the Iceland international looks set to attract plenty of sales in the near future.

Goals look set to be hard to come by against Liverpool, given that the Reds have allowed fewer shots from inside the box (12) than any other side over the last four matches, while Manchester City have kept clean sheets in two of their last three.

Arsenal and Southampton also represent testing opposition, so Swans’ attackers look to hold very little appeal after the Bournemouth match.

The outlook is even gloomier at the other end of the pitch, given that Palace were able to breach the Swansea defence four times last month, leaving perhaps only the Bournemouth match as a realistic chance of a clean sheet in the next six.

Even that appears unlikely in the current predicament, while Arsenal, Liverpool and City all have to be fancied to run riot against a Swans backline that has conceded more goals (41) than any other side.

Jordi Amat, who is current owned by 13% of FPL managers, also lost his place in the starting XI on Boxing Day, but his price tag means many may be happy to keep him on the bench until the opportunity arises to move him on.

Chelsea

(STO, tot, lei, HUL, liv, ARS)

It’s been plain sailing for Antonio Conte’s side over the past few months, but trips to White Hart Lane and Anfield, along with a home clash against Arsenal, mean we should perhaps be a little wary of our Chelsea assets over the coming spell.

Spurs and Liverpool have conceded just two and three goals respectively over the past four matches, so Chelsea’s profits in attack face a decline.

Arsenal should be boosted by the return to fitness of Shkodran Mustafi by the time the two teams meet in Gameweek 24, making that another difficult fixture, although the home encounters against Stoke City and Hull City are hugely favourable.

Owning one of Eden Hazard or Diego Costa should continue to pay dividends, then, but loading up on the Blues attack may not pay off over the coming weeks.

Doubling up has also been a viable option in defence of late, but Spurs and Liverpool are the two highest scoring teams over the last four matches with 10 goals apiece, while Arsenal have netted in every away match since the goalless draw against Leicester City in Gameweek 2.

Once the Stoke tie is out of the way, then, there may only be the need to own one Chelsea defender, with Marcos Alonso remaining the star attraction due to his attacking threat from left wing-back.

Hull City

(EVE, wba, BOU, che, mun, LIV)

The Tigers face three very difficult away trips and also host both Merseyside clubs over the next six Gameweeks.

Hull defenders look to have very little realistic chance of mustering any defensive returns, then, with only the Bournemouth clash in Gameweek 21 offering a glimmer of hope in that regard.

Everton do sit in the bottom half for total goal attempts over the last four matches, with 39, but given that they’ve created seven big chances over the same period, it’s likely they’ll be able to find the back of the net in Friday’s Gameweek 19 opener.

Tigers defenders should remain an afterthought for Fantasy managers, then.

Robert Snodgrass has been a viable option for parts of this season, but the midfielder looks to offer little appeal over the coming stretch.

Goals appear unlikely against both Chelsea and Liverpool in particular, with the Blues having kept four consecutive cleans sheets, while the Reds, as already mentioned, are limiting teams to very few goal attempts.

Manchester United are also shining in that regard of late, while Everton and West Brom appear unlikely to concede more than once against Mike Phelan’s men.

Bournemouth have conceded nine goals in their last four matches, but that one decent match-up doesn’t look enough to warrant keeping faith in Snodgrass, who is currently sitting in 5.2% of FPL squads.

Also be wary of…

Liverpool
Jurgen Klopp’s men face three of the current top six (MCI, mun, CHE) over the coming period, denting the appeal of Reds players, although they also face the current bottom three (sun, SWA, hul) over the next six Gameweeks.

Those three plum fixtures should ensure the need for at least one Reds midfielder in our 15-man squads, but choosing the right one will be crucial given that the next six fixtures don’t appear to warrant big investment.

The Liverpool rearguard continues to impress in a lot of defensive statistics, but with clean sheet points only appearing likely in three matches, there should be stronger alternatives for the upcoming period.

Dejan Lovren does offer solid value at 5.0 in FPL, though, given his added goal threat, having already scored twice this season.

Burnley
Once Saturday’s plum home tie with Sunderland has passed, the fixture list (mci, SOT, ars, LEI, wat) isn’t too promising for the Clarets.

Trips to the Etihad and the Emirates may see Sean Dyche’s side leak a few goals, and although they are strong defensively at home, clashes against Southampton and Leicester look far from straightforward.

Tom Heaton should continue to offer excellent value due to his save points alone, but the upside of all Burnley defenders appears somewhat limited over the coming period.

City, Southampton and Arsenal all boast fairly strong defences, so Clarets attackers, as has been the case for the majority of the season, appear unlikely to break onto the radar.

West Ham United
The Hammers face a mixed upcoming schedule, with three difficult encounters (MUN, MCI, sot) combined with three kinder match-ups (lei, CPL, mid).

Given that Slaven Bilic’s side only mustered two goals in home matches against Burnley and Hull City, it’s difficult to see them scoring many against United and City, while Middlesbrough are also hard to break down at the Riverside.

The likes of Dimitri Payet, Michail Antonio and Andy Carroll don’t appear likely to muster many double-digit hauls, then, with perhaps stronger options available in their respective price brackets.

Defensive returns could be on the cards against Palace, Saints and ‘Boro, but unless you currently own a West Ham defender, now doesn’t look the time to invest given those two home fixtures against the Manchester clubs.

    Foster | Pickford
    Kosc | Lovren | Holebas | Pieters | Amat
    Sanchez | Hazard | Siggy | Antonio | Fletcher
    Ibra | Costa | Benteke

Thoughts on Lovren > Nyom (4.3, nailed, decent BBPS) for gw20?
Would have Nyom covered for gw21 (tot).

Like a lot of others I transfered out Costa for ibra last week and want to buy him back for Kane this week. It turned out to be a good move from a score point of view and also from a value point of view as ibra has risen 0.4 since and Costa dropped 0.3 since, hence cheaper to buy Costa back.

Can anybody help me justify Kane to Costa this week and convince me that I should do it.

Personally I can't see Kate getting 180 mins over the next two matches but can see Costa getting 2 full games after his rest. Anybody agree ?

I think both could come off early if they're winning, same with a lot of the big hitters this week. Both have mixed fixtures so could go either way imo

Tbh, many of us are in the same position of whether to keep Kane or get Costa back. There is no right or wrong answer. It may depend on whether you are looking to get Kun back. If so saving would be prudent. Both could score well this week.

I have A but am thinking about switching to B or C next week. Pick one:

    A. Kane & Origi
    B. Costa & Rondon & 0.2
    C. Aguero & Anichibe & 0.1

B for me. Anichebe pretty average. How much more do you think Aguero will outscore Costa by - that is the question. I think Costa will be top premier league goalscorer by the end of the season so I am sticking with him. Ibra will run him close though. Just think no European football edges it.

It's seriously like the first 14 weeks of the season didn't happen on here this week.

I was very late to the party with Costa, refused to get him because I was pro Aguero, only got Costa when Aguero got sent off again, Costa wiped the floor with Aguero in the first 14 weeks of the season.

Every reason I refused to get Costa was batted straight back with his consistency and Aguero's lack of consistency (this season) and by Pep's ability to make them look disjointed due to his constant changes.

Why do we think it's going to be different now?

Costa has been the best player in the league this season and has blanked 3 times, he's the no 1 fantasy pick this season, hard to argue against it.

Across the long haul of the first 14 weeks, and very likely the remainder of the season, Costa out scores Aguero. There is this potential of Aguero, especially against weak teams, to explode. Despite his inconsistency, that potential is there, and I imagine many fantasy owners are trying to time their Kun purchase to win the lottery with his odd 4-5 goal outburst against some lame team. Burnley at home in gw20, while Costa travels to Spurs, seems like one such opportunity. It's a bit of a lottery gamble.

True BUT Aguero has also let us down as captain many times in the last 18 months, I lie others have always owned him because of his explosiveness but he's not alone this season and hasn't been as reliable in the last year.

Sanchez, Hazard, Ibra are all more than capable of exploding and have done this season while Costa and Lukaku have had spells where they've kept pace at much cheaper.

It is a lottery like you say, Costa has Spurs in what looks a tricky fixture, I doubt many expected him to haul big against City but he did, meanwhile, Aguero has been backed for the captaincy this season against West Ham, Everton, Southampton and Palace this season and blanked in them all, had him as C at home to Boro and he scored only 6 points which tells you that he's no longer a sure thing, he's human like the rest of them but costs 2m+ more.

Costa has been the more consistent, but "wiped the floor" is a little extreme. In fewer minutes, Aguero had more shot attempts, more shots on target, and one less goal (11 to 10). The assists sway things toward Costa, but Aguero's explosiveness and "captainability" shouldn't be easily dismissed, IMO.

Yes, wiped the floor, Costa started at 9.5m, Aguero at 13m, that's a big difference, Costa more than matched him and some would argue has become more important.

Well, now you've added a different variable - cost.

"Wiped the floor" doesn't suggest that you were talking value as much as performance.

Points per match is 6.8 (Costa) to 6.2 (Aguero). That's fairly close. That's like saying Alonso (6.1) has wiped the floor with Azpi (5.3). Hardly.

OK, true, I'm speaking as an Aguero owner who never owned Costa and every time Costa scored points (which was weekly) he would do damage to my week, every time Aguero let me/us down when backed, Costa's consistency would have an even greater impact.

That's how I'm viewing as wiping the floor, he's been the far greater fantasy asset this season in a far more reliable team.

Ha, yeah, I'm in the same exact boat. I've owned Costa for only two weeks this year. My rank hasn't suffered much (16K), so I'm probably (admittedly stubbornly) trying to justify not bringing him back in.

And, yes, it's been frustrating not owning Costa, but a few years of watching Costa get no more than a goal a game, get yellows like they are going out of style, and being allergic to bonus points, and a few years of watching Aguero punish non-owners with huge hauls is a hard thing to shake!!

So, yes, I'm probably just using some confirmation bias to move Kane to Kun next week instead of getting Costa. Guilty as charged 🙂

(Oh, but I do have this as supporting evidence: even with all of his missed matches, Aguero still has four matches this season of more than one goal, while Costa has just one. So, for captaincy, Aguero still has some appeal.)

Yeah I'm not arguing with you, Aguero is still a huge captain pick because when he goes big he does go big but he's also flopped many times too, that's quite important to me, at his price he has to have the consistency of Costa, I don't think he's had it as much this season, while he's 17% owned I don't think he's dangerous not to own, Costa and Ibra are at the moment because both are 40%+ owned.

When Aguero gets back up to that number then non owners will have to suck it up and get him back but right now it's probably more dangerous to go without Costa or Ibra because every goal hurts at the moment.

PS. Costa has had 4 games where he's got more than 1 goal.

He's had 1 brace and 3 games with 1 goal and 1 assist.

At 2m less that's OK IMO because that 2m goes a long way this season in another spot.

What are people's (particularly Liverpool fans) thoughts on Can? When I've seen him recently prior to his injury he's looked good and had started 6 or 7 in a row I believe. Us he likely to get back to that or will Wijnaldum take a lot of time off him?

Is it worth Pickford to Valdes for -4pt or just play with 10 men?

Valdes will probably get 2 points and so in effect -2pts overall.

That said, I will need to do the transfer next week anyway and spend -4pts

Yeah they gradually update it in the days leading up to the deadline. I see they've taken the suspended Delaney out now. You need the write-ups to appear before you can go off it really, that seems to be when it gets finalised.

Costa or Aguero? My head hurts.

No doubt Costa is the sensible choice. My overall rank is 2k. 45% in top 10k had him benched this week and loads will bring him in, so I will suffer if he scores well. Not many will have Aguero. The 2.1 extra also means I can bring Coutinho in over a 6.3 priced midfielder alongside Sanchez, Hazard and Phillips.

But Aguero (C) as a differential against Burnley to kick start the new year? So tempting..

      • 9 Years

Think the question is one of long term planning - if you look at the fixtures of Kane, Aguero, Costa and Ibra individually how often would you captain Aguero over those 3. If it is only a few times in the next 8-10 weeks I don't see the point.

      1. Niemi
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 6 months ago

Valid point. Would only captain him in 2 of the coming 8 gameweeks looking at the fixtures.

      9 years, 6 months ago

I think budget is much more important this season. I'd always prefer to spread the risk and have a balanced squad. Also the 'template' is more spread too, so its not a case of always being successful or always being burnt, you'll have a lot of middling GW performances because there are alot of combos going around.

As for Aguero, he has been pretty poor value so far this season and if he continues in that vain, you may not miss much.

      1. Niemi
        • 11 Years

True that, think I'm going Costa. Surely there will be over 50% in top 10k owning him and loads captaining him, so I'll play it safe.

I am not an Origi owner, but I don't understand why FPL managers are ditching him especially for players like Wilson, Benteke, Llorente, Negredo etc. In the last 6 matches he has played 387 minutes and scored 40 points (not returning a goal or assist in only one of those games). Compare this with Firmino (priced at over £8.5m). I understand the fears around gametime risk, but isn't it telling that Klopp subbed Origi and Lallana against Stoke after 70 minutes when Liverpool were 3-1 up (i.e. protecting them for the next match).

Origi feels good value at his price especially with Coutinho injured (Klopp has confirmed Coutinho is out for at least the next two GWs) and Mane off to AFCON (after GW 20). Sturridge will get cameos and cup games, but Klopp has shown he does not trust him. I expect to see the following for a while yet:

      Lallana Henderson Can
      Mane/Coutinho* Origi Firmino

      * Mane until he goes to AFCON then Coutinho

That gives you at least another month of Origi goodness while Mane is off.

I agree with you, but I also like to own a predictable 3rd striker. I am keeping him for now, as I have more pressing issues to take care of.

        1. diesel001
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 6 months ago

I think there is little predictability at the 5th midfielder / 3rd striker level this year - no Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy etc. to pick this season - this is what is making it difficult. If you want a guaranteed two points every match then Anichebe or Capoue are the picks. Anything more then you have to gamble.

    4. Demel
      • 14 Years
      9 years, 6 months ago

I own him and will probably sell him tonight and bring Kun in. I take a different approach to others. I think he was giving Sturridge minutes and not resting Origi. Sturridge performed and I think there is a good chance that he will take Origi's place next game.

How much movement in price do we reckon for Costa and Kane between now and the end of GW19?

    Costa +0.2 and Kane -0.2?

Been planning to do Kane -> Costa all day but have held off, mainly because Kane vs WAT looks like a potential points-fest. Now I realise I've got Walker on red flag and Wally on orange, so looking like Holebas and de Roon coming in - might end up keeping Kane after all but don't want to miss out on too much of a price swing.

    Hazard, Sanchez, Lallana, Antonio, Zaha
    Ibrahimovic, Costa, Barnes

    0.0 ITB

    Cech (Pickford)
    Cedric-Clyne-Jones (Holebas/Amat)
    Walcott-Hazard-Siggy-Erikssen (Capoue)
    Ibra-Kane-Origi

Nothing in the bank and considering bringing in Costa-Sanchez and Rodriguez for Hazard-Walcott -Kane
