Burnley continue their fine home record while Palace come from behind to avoid a shock against Bolton as the FA Cup third round replays go to form.

Burnley 2 Sunderland 0

Burnley eased past Sunderland and into the fourth round of the FA Cup in a match both sides could have been forgiven for wanting to lose.

Clarets’ boss Sean Dyche made seven changes to the team that beat Southampton on Saturday, with only midfield trio George Boyd (5.1), Steven Defour (5.7) and Jeff Hendrick (5.4), together with defender Michael Keane (4.9), retaining their places.

Sunderland, by contrast, fielded a side much closer to their first XI, with the benching of the 29.3%-owned Jermain Defoe (7.9) the main decision by David Moyes, who also brought in Billy Jones (4.4) and George Honeyman (4.5) as his only other changes from the weekend. Jack Rodwell was their latest injury casualty, ruled out with a knee problem sustained in the defeat to Stoke City.

The goals came from Sam Vokes (5.9), assisted by defender Tendayi Darikwa (4.2), and substitute Andre Gray (6.2), who was set up by Boyd.

Gray, a 5.3%-owned Fantasy asset, had not scored in two league matches, but now has five goals from his last six fixtures in all competitions.

Defoe was brought on in the second half, but was ill-served by a side that managed just two attempts on goal.

Post-match, Moyes rued his squad’s lack of depth.

“I’m really disappointed because we are threadbare at the moment. There were some positives – George (Honeyman) played well for us tonight and we played with three at the back to see if we could stop Burnley bullying us a little bit defensively.”

A change of formation to a three-man backline does have the potential to allow another relatively popular Sunderland asset, the 4.4%-owned Patrick van Aanholt (5.0), a more attacking role.

But Defoe, who has scored four times in Sunderland’s current four-match winless run in the league, remains the Black Cats only real Fantasy attraction.

Burnley will now play Bristol City at Turf Moor on Saturday, January 28, before the Gameweek 23 visit of Leicester on the following Tuesday.

Burnley XI: Pope, Darikwa, Keane, Tarkowski, Flanagan, Kightly (Gray 77), Boyd (O’Neill 90), Barton, Defour, Hendrick, Vokes.
Subs not used: Robinson, Mee, Lowton, Ward, Jackson.

Sunderland XI: Mannone, Jones, Denayer, Djilobodji, van Aanholt, Manquillo, Larsson, Love (Defoe 63), Honeyman, Januzaj, Borini (Asoro 80).
Subs not used: Mika, O’Shea, E Robson, Embleton, T Robson.

Crystal Palace 2 Bolton Wanderers 1

Christian Benteke (7.4) came off the bench to score twice in 30 minutes and give Sam Allardyce his first win as Palace manager.

The 5.7%-owned Belgian hasn’t scored in the league since Gameweek 15 – the end of a purple patch during which he netted five times in as many matches – and has suffered a major decline in ownership and price as a result.

A return to form could reverse both those trends as Palace prepare for a vital run of fixtures involving Everton, Sunderland and Middlesbrough at home and trips to Bournemouth, Stoke City and West Brom.

Allardyce made seven changes to the team well beaten by West Ham at the weekend, but having talked up new signing Jeffrey Schlupp (4.8) pre-match, the former Leicester man was not eligible to make the squad.

Midfielder Sullay Kaikai (4.5) was given his first ever Eagles start, while Joel Ward (4.8), Damien Delaney (4.8), Andros Townsend (5.9) and Joe Ledley (4.4) were the only survivors from Saturday’s side.

Palace were on course for a loss before Allardyce chanced his arm with a triple substitution. Benteke responded by heading home a Mathieu Flamini (4.3) cross and then steered home the winner from a Townsend assist.

The manager didn’t dwell on the victory for long post-match, spending much of the time talking of the need to strengthen his squad.

“We are spreading our wings far and wide and hopefully in the next 48 hours, at least one of those targets will be saying yes, pass a medical and sign for us. It’s hard to say how many we’re looking for; we’ve had about five, six or even eight bids in for players across Europe and in this country, and we’ve only had one accepted, which is Jeffrey Schlupp.”

The Eagles’ immediate schedule is certainly demanding. The FA Cup victory means they’ll entertain Man City in the fourth round on Saturday, January 28 – three days before they travel to Bournemouth for Gameweek 23.

City will have the benefit of an extra day off before their trip to West Ham on the Wednesday evening.

Crystal Palace XI: Speroni, Ward, Kelly, Delaney (Tomkins 62), Fryers, Lee, Flamini, Ledley (Puncheon 63), Townsend, Kaikai, Remy (Benteke 62).
Subs not used: Hennessey, Phillips, Cabaye, Husin.

What's your worst transfer decisions so far?

    1. Picking Wally instead of Eriksen when their price was the same and according to other problems I bought Erik just now.
    2. Austin replacement fiasko. Austin>Nacho -4; Nacho>Origi, Origi>Kun for -4 all together with Ake.

2 has been a problem for me since Austin got injured. I got him an 6.2 and he had reached 6.9.

Just when I though we might have found a 3rd striker in Giroud he also gets injured.

      1. Not getting Costa first half of season since I wanted to wait for his 5th yelllow. When I eventually got him, he gets that card ofc, and then not playing previous GW.
      2. Not getting a Spurs defender
      3. Iheancho punt, then swapping for Origi when that didn't work out.

1/ I got Austin in on a Saturday when he was rising for a -4.... he played on the Sunday and got injured... had to do a -8 to replace him without him having played a game. Ridiculously rookie play by me.

2/ Falling for the Hazard in for Sanchez rush back in Q4. Cost me so many points.

Transferring Firmino out for Lallana for a hit. Firmino scored a brace and went on a pts scoring run. Lallana limped off injured for one point - plus his substitution saw a change of formation that made Firmino more effective.

I've avoided sideways moves ever since.

      GW6: Costa > Agüero
GW6: I sold Azpilicueta because he was close to a drop and Chelsea couldn't keep a clean sheet in first 4 easy games
      GW11: Snodgrass > Allen
GW11: Karius > Heaton (it was a great long term move but in first 3 weeks after pulling the trigger Karius got 16 points and Heaton only 2)
      GW14: Deeney > Austin for a hit
      GW14: Walcott over Eriksen
GW21: Daniels in as a part of -12 which went well but I'm still disappointed with 1 point against Hull

      1. Picking up Payet instead of Alli before GW16 (WHM had two plum home games, Spurs too but already had Kane for BUR and HUL...and give him the armband

      2. Getting rid of Kane after his aforementioned blanks

      3. Punting on Kelechi when Aguero got his four game ban.

Worst transfer pick for this season which I'm repenting immensely has to be to bring in Enner Valencia this week on my wild card hoping he will kick on from his goal and assist in the previous game week. Now it looks like he is not even going to feature from the bench. In my defense it was 30 mins prior to the deadline in place of Costa to fund Sanchez but I have a feeling his Everton journey is over.

Not sure who to swap him for will probably bring in Lukaku and Anichebe if Giroud is ruled out or else probably bank and hope he returns to West Ham.

Not sure about the worst but the latest is Defoe to Rondon before LIV, and had a couple of hits before that didnt work, the player I got in gets less points than the one I had, plus the hit, but well, lets not return to that.

      1. taking too many hits, mostly knee jerking
      2. bringing players who fail or get injured immediately after I buy them and especially "cheap forward" saga I'm going through:

brought Deeney in GW8 - returned 6 pts in 3 gwks
GW11 Deeney to Austin - did very well, got injured GW14
      GW15 Austin to Ancihebe (-4) - 2 pts, then GW16 got injured
      GW17 Anichebe to Origi (-4) - returned 8 pts in 3 gwks
GW20 Origi to Benteke (-4) - got injured immediately, had to remove him for -4

I guess I'm doing something terribly wrong this year with that 3rd forward spot. I guess I should go for Ibra/Kane/Lukaku and forget about that 3rd forward in my team.

I feel your Cedric pain, did exactly the same thing and got nothing but disappointment from him. The Southampton defense looked great at the time and it made sense, they look a shambles now and will avoid all assents for the rest of the reason, especially if Fonte or Van Dijk go.

GW16 0 minutes, 0 points, Southampton clean sheet
      GW17 90 minutes, 2 points
      GW18 90 minutes, 2 points
      GW19 0 minutes, 0 points, Southampton concede

I doubt anyone can doubt that one. GW16 like many was eying Spurs assets for the Hull and Burnley home games. Already had Kane and Walker in so was looking for the 3rd players. Spent a lot of time looking at Toby, Eriksen and Alli. Eriksen and Alli's inconsistency worriedme so went for the safer choice of Toby. Seemed like 2 guaranteed CSs and maybe a goal. Toby missed the first game and conceded in the 2nd. Sold him right after that. Eriksen and Alli still racking up huge points since then. Easily missed out on 40+ points that would have changed my season. Still makes me sick thinking about it now.

A lot of the above comments amount to 'what could I have done better with 20/20 hindsight'. And as such they are useless because we never have that until after the decision is made. Others describe good or reasonable decisions that got unlucky, not bad decisions at all.

A poor transfer decision is where bias causes you to make a move that is stupid. My worst was losing Sanchez back in GW13. My excuse was the injury doubt after what happened in Chile but actually it was because I am pre-disposed to think that Sanchez scores heavy in small bursts and I thought that was a clever time to get off. 😕

It wasn't, because Sanchez playing #9 is a different kettle of fish and I could/should have known that. Actually I did know it but ignored it. I had to take a hit to get him back 2 weeks later having missed 37 points in 2 weeks. And I cost myself 0.4m in the process. That was just a plain bad decision caused by me trying to be too clever.

      1. Last week, was on my WC, swapped Alonso for Azpi based around his bonus points dominance and Alonso's end product being dissapointing, I now know how all those who sold Sanchez for Hazard felt.

      2. Selling Kane after b2b captain blanks and after he skied his pen in the following game to get Costa back in, regret that one a lot when you look at how events have played out since.

      3. Last week, was on the WC and sold Antonio (due to the doubt/flag) for Coutinho, that may still prove to be a better move but it's still stinging right now.

unluckiest was Can. Great form & fixtures but got injured by his own player & when he came back no returns. Also was very difficult in shifting him because he was so cheap.

worst decision: probably taking Kane straight back out for Costa but this is a hindsight decision.

made a lot of transfers and taken hits but none of them really disasterous in terms of player brought in - more could have made better picks.

Sold Alli for Walcott on Christmas day.
Have missed out on 44 points as a result and brought him back in last week.

Definitely selling Kane after his Hull & Burnley back to back blanks. Great for beforehand. Brought him in only for those - nothing. Punted him out - goes on a scoring run.

Backed Ozil towards the start of the season. Then sold him just before his 2 hauls for Alli who didnt hit form yet. Sold Alli just before his 3 mega-hauls for Walcott who got injured!

Screwed up the timing big time here.

      Not getting Defoe all season
Bringing in Chadli for a hit just before his knee operation
Bringing in Walcott for a hit just before his 'minor injury'
Shipping Kane out before Watford game

There are too many to mention...

Sanchez to Hazard was my worst. Sanchez went on to score 6 goals and 3 assists in five gameweeks, whereas Hazard scored 1 goal over that period.

Buying Firmino, who was on fire, just in time for his 6 week drought was also a bit miserable.

Other failures involved Aguero, Ibrahimovic, Rodriguez, Tadic, Snodgrass, Allen, Arnautovic, Williams, and Cedric.

I've had most of the right players, but not necessarily at the right time.
Worst decision was to play my wildcard in GW2.
Other poor decisions were most of my hits, many of which left my squad weaker rather than stronger in either the short or the long term as well as ruining my overall ranking.

Made many horrible decisions but worst one was in GW 13 selling Sanchez for coutinho for a hit as liv were playing sunderland & i thought walcott was cover.
1st time owning coutinho (captained) & he got injured.
I missed sanchez 14 & 23 points. Was just a few points behind ML leader who captained him for both matches. Was a 60 point swing that has taken me until now to finaly claw back!

          Toure's Ivorian. So it's a different FA.

I think it's different because Cameroon were refusing to release a registration - that's basically the "key" to allow a player to play. Same issue for Nyom. They're basically throwing a wobbly because neither wanted to play ACON.

Hopefully Nyom (am an owner) especially is resolved soon. At the start of a great run of games and fab value at 4.3 if he's clear to play...

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Top tips on holding onto a mini league lead and also on catching the leader.

Last night's Scoutcast saw us reveal our top tips on mini-league victory, which included matching rivals captaincy choices and ensuring you invest in at least two or three low owned, high scoring differentials.

Doubling up on key defensive assets owne by your rivals was another.

    What are your top tips?

Also feel free to give examples where you have successfully held rivals at bay - or mounted a dramatic successful bid for mini league glory.

    1. MTPockets

      Holding - monitor their teams.
      Catching - don't.

1.One example was bringing in Dele Alli before he went on that brilliant run. Helped me cut the gap between me and my Ml leader to less than100 from more than 180. I don't know why I did it. Probably as a differential.

If leading - don't try to be smart. don't jump on bandwagons too early, try to get same players as your rival, don't punt on captain, don't punt on players, try to predict rivals captain choice or go for the most obvious pick, stick to template if don't know what to do.

      If chasing - ....the opposite

If you are behind, take a look at the upcoming fixtures and be prepared. Find teams that will have good fixtures and bring in key players as soon as possible ("one week early than one week late")

Definitely like this comment - it's not saying do anything unusual, just try to be ahead of the curve. By definition you may get it wrong but you need to do something and I don't believe less likely differentials for the sake of it is the best way to recover ground on a leader.

Call me old fashioned, but I don't thing you should do much differently. You are leading for a reason and, unless something really punty came in, you should continue with the same mentality. You may be watching your back for #2, but then #3 may come out of nowhere and surpass you 😉

    10. Bash Villa
      9 years, 6 months ago

I would just make sure I have the best possible team that can score the best score. Adjusting your team to cover other teams is a recipe for disaster (My OR dropped from 4k to 20k within few weeks just because I adjustEd my team to my FFS cup opponents').

I understand when you have maverick transfers to bring differentials but that can easily backfire. I'd rather gain 5 points more everyweek rather than risking with many differentials.

First this season where there are many options up front with similar points input, the key is having a better defence. In my opinion that's what will make you gain more points.

My first year doing a fantasy team and I've been top of my ML since GW1 not moved once. Only worry is my lead has went from 130 to 90 in last 5 gameweeks but now I believe my team is a lot better than there's, hopefully open up the gap again!

When leading, stick to what got you in front in the first place ... don't over think things.

When you focus on the opponent too much its like dropping too deep ... don't do it.

      • 11 Years

I find myself leading my ML - a position I've not been in at this stage of the season before. I look at the teams around me but I wouldn't let any of them influence my decision making at this stage. Perhaps if we were into the last 5 or so gameweeks but only time will tell.

I would say it allows me to play safer. I guess I have a fairly template team but they are tried and tested. If I was chasing I would be trying to make early moves for players like Coutinho, whereas by leading I am relaxed and can wait until he's settled back in.

Leading - Force your rivals to take unfavorable gambles by owning the template asap and choosing either the most captained or most consistent points output e.g. Costa.

Chasing - Take favorable gambles and differentials, try to catch up before a template emerges.

Don’t allow their selections to cloud your judgement – i.e, watch your mini leagues for fun, but don’t allow them to influence your selections.

Play the game your way and focus on scoring 65 points average per week, and getting inside the top 10k – this will be enough 95% of the time to ensure you catch and pass them if you’re behind, or stay ahead if you already are.

Your mini league placings will take care of themselves if you focus on your own game first.

      My tips

      Holding:
      - Cover big players.
      - Own as close to the template as possible.
      - Make obvious changes.
      - Never take hits unless absolutely necessary
      - Make obvious captain choices.
      - Related to the above, make your challengers make the risky calls on differentials.
(I've won my very competitive mini league 2/3 of the last seasons... probably not going to happen this year though, am doing a Leicester-style title defence)

      Chasing:
      - Smart differentials before they get picked up by others is key. Good example from this year is Alli - getting those 15 points, 3 times in a row before he was picked up by everyone else really helped me to gain some ground as those were unique points for me.
      - Don't worry about the perceived difficulty of fixtures - get the on form players in, as the fixtures could well be putting off rivals
      - Also a bit of it lies in instinct - I've made a couple of plays to get the differential (c) landed but it hasn't quite paid off, yet a rival this week armbanded Kane and got 34 points and no-one else captained, and in many cases didn't even own. That's 17 - 34 unique points for him vs. 11 - 22 for the mainstream Sanchez captainers.
      - The big caveat is to not get reckless with hits (it dilutes your chase!) and rash captaincies - I captained Hazard the week Ibra had Sunderland at home and got 30pts in the hope of a differential.

*ruined it at the end - last bullet, final sentence should read

        - The big caveat is to not get reckless with hits (it dilutes your chase!) and rash captaincies - I captained Hazard the week Ibra had Sunderland at home and got 30pts. So that week it was better to captain Ibra, the obvious choice, and get the 10 points from "carrying" Hazard. Pick your moments and use your judgement - that's the difficult, "skillful" part of the chase.

ALSO - play your chips with the wildcards later in the season. Many ML rivals will not be FFSers / au fait with the WC -> BB DGW model from last year, so use that to your advantage... maybe even stealthily encourage them to wildcard early 😉

Agreed on the chips later in the season - a lot of ML leaders midway through the season are not experienced players, so have likely used the majority of their chips already. Combined, and used wisely, they should give you a nice 50-70 point boost to pull away without fear of getting caught at that late stage of the season.

Yeah exactly, and even moderate FPL players might not know about the best way to use the chips in terms of a season strategy, so they'll have a sub-optimal use of the bench boost chip, which is the key one for you if you are chasing as you can build a team with at least 13 of your 15 playing twice

Thanks for bringing this up last night Jonty,

I have let some rivals catch up the over the xmas.. Still relatively comfortable over most but it's only 7 points between me and No.2..... I'm still going Maverick but feel I should be more Dull.. But what does going dull even mean this season is so unpredictable.... For now i'm going to stock up for fixtures and just go with form players... like Lukakau for everton- Sanchez for ARS maybe even Iwobi as a differential...

You're already top because to date, you've so far made the better choices. Worry about your own team, and continue to make the most informed and logical choices that you can. Trying to emulate your rivals defence could have you with say Koscielny and Walker; but they could have an Alonso against your Valencia.... point being, you could be weakening your team in trying to emulate your rivals, and still lose out

Now that Costa's fiasco is over, do you think I should still use my WC or not?

    A) No WC
    Vertonghen to Walker &
    Snoddy to Phillips for -4
    Keep Costa, Ake and Lallana

    B) WC

One example was bringing in Dele Alli before he went on that brilliant run. Helped me cut the gap between me and my Ml leader to less than100 from more than 180. I don't know why I did it. Probably as a differential.

Do you think Poch will stick with 3 at the back? If so, will anyone be bringing in Wimmer or Davies? I am not sure they will be as defensively sturdy with one of those instead of Vertonghen but still might be worth a punt for the price.

I think they'll go to a back 4 after City, they should be able to deal with their upcoming schedule (after City) without the extra CB and with an extra attacker.

Who would you rather play in easier games with goals to be scored? Ben Davis, Wimmer or Son?

They very nearly won the league with 4 at the back, not sure the change back will harm them.

Very good point! Playing devil's advocate though, do you not think he may like to take this chance to play one of the younger lads to give them experience as they're easier matches so will probably win anyway?

Could do, the youngster he seems keen to bring on is Harry Winks though, not sure an extra defender allows this.

Davies and Wimmer are more back ups then developing players I'd say.

This is a burning question for me. I have Alonso, Holebas, Evans*,Ake*,Amat* plus Giroud info to wait for. Ake is about to drop. If Evans is out I would make a hit to get playing defender anyway but we won't get that info today so:

    a) ake > chambers today for -4 to avoid loosing that 0.1
    b) wait for the presser

      A. Decent chance for cs, their are more solid then Palace and will pay in long run. But i would go Friend. Cheaper and more attacking threat.
I would bet on Giroud's out. Wenger may not risk and will keep him safe so with Iwobi, Ozil and Alexis Ox is waiting for a chance and Swans are the best opponents.

I think having a fourth playing defender is pretty essential, it's Evans doubtful this week will be someone else doubtful later. I would change now rather than later and cross fingers on OG, if his toe was that bad he wouldn't have come out second half is my guess
