Two ties lead to single-goal victories for Premier League sides on a night decidedly short of many FA Cup thrills and spills.

Plymouth Argyle 0 Liverpool 1

A first-half header from Lucas (4.4) finally saw off a spirited Plymouth and secured Liverpool a home tie with Wolves in the fourth round.

The Brazilian netted from a Philippe Coutinho (8.3) corner but Jurgen Klopp’s young side couldn’t kill off the tie, with Divock Origi (6.6) having a second-half penalty saved following a foul on Alberto Moreno (4.4).

Klopp made nine changes from the side who drew with Manchester United on Sunday. But having named the club’s youngest ever team for the first cup tie, he drafted in only Coutinho, who was given another hour as he returns from injury, and Daniel Sturridge (9.7) to give the starting line-up at Home Park just a sprinkling of extra experience.

The England striker was a peripheral figure and Coutinho only an intermittent influence and as a result, the Reds struggled to break down their hosts, who were the width of a post away from dragging the match into extra time as they grew in confidence following the break.

One of Liverpool’s youngsters, Trent Alexander-Arnold (4.3), again impressed at right-back in the continued absence of the 11.5%-owned Nathaniel Clyne (5.8), who missed the Old Trafford match with a rib injury.

Aside from the result, the 18-year-old’s performance, and more minutes for Coutinho, were the major positives for Klopp when speaking post-match.

“I’m happy, really happy. It was very important for us. I thought 60-65 minutes was the perfect intensity for today. Good for him (Coutinho) and good for us.”

Liverpool will now have to attempt to overturn a 1-0 deficit against Southampton in the EFL Cup semi-final, face Wolves and then entertain Chelsea in Gameweek 23 during a busy last week of January.

Liverpool XI: Karius, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Lucas, Moreno, Stewart, Ejaria, Coutinho (Wilson 65), Woodburn, Origi, Sturridge (Ojo 76).
Subs not used: Mignolet, Klavan, Williams, Randall, Alves.

Southampton 1 Norwich City 0

‘Every game’s an adventure’ according to this year’s FA Cup marketing blurb.

Well if Southampton’s replay with Norwich was an adventure, it wasn’t an awfully big one. In fact it was just awful.

Shane Long (6.1) bundled home the winner two minutes into stoppage time to finally put a drab match out of its misery, earning the Saints a home encounter with Arsenal in the fourth round on Saturday, January 28.

Coach Claude Puel made eight changes to the side who lost to Burnley at the weekend, with only Long, Maya Yoshida (4.2) and James Ward-Prowse (5.0) keeping their places. The 11.8%-owned Virgil van Dijk (5.8) – a virtual ever-present this season – missed out with a knock.

Southampton had 10 shots on target to the visitors’ zero, but struggled to break down Norwich’s deep-lying defence – fitting for a side who, with just 19 goals, have the Premier League’s second worst scoring record.

Puel has not named the same side for consecutive matches all season. That lack of continuity explains some of his side’s toothlessness up front, as does the lack of a quality goalscorer since Charlie Austin (6.4) fell to a long-term injury.

No amount of tinkering by Puel seems to be addressing that issue, making the Saints’ forthcoming fixtures – Leicester City and West Ham at home, Swansea City and Sunderland away – attractive only as a chance for Fantasy managers to pick up points from defensive assets.

The Arsenal tie will be book-ended by the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final with Liverpool and a Gameweek 23 trip to Swansea. Such a busy schedule will no doubt prompt further changes by Puel.

At least his decision to make Yoshida captain against Norwich – and then single him out for post-match praise – suggests the budget centre-half looks key to Puel’s defensive plans.

“Maya made a very good season, playing well in every moment and with good concentration, winning duels and giving satisfaction. He made good progress since the start of the season.”

With Cedric, Dusan Tadic and Redmond also named on the bench, Fantasy managers can at least look to that trio with a degree of security ahead of Gameweek 22. It remains to be seen if Jay Rodriguez, withdrawn on 70 minutes last night, leads the attack.

Southampton XI: Lewis, Martina, Yoshida, Stephens, McQueen, Clasie, Reed (Romeu 71), Ward-Prowse, Sims, Long, Rodriguez (Redmond 70).
Subs not used: Taylor, Soares, Gardos, Tadic, Højbjerg.

Glad to see that Giroud is fit. But should i do something to my team? I think i need some Everton players soon but they have couple away games so should i wait? I think i keep Aguero at least this week. If he is still crap then i take Kane or Lukaku in.

    Foster (Jaku)
    Valencia, McAuley, Cedric (Pieters, Amat)
    Sanchez, Eriksen, Stanislas, Phillips (Capoue)

Think both are conceding to be honest. United will be frustrated after poor performance vs Liverpool so can see goals. Burnley away = goals conceded as we know. Better to go for the home team, so agree with Grant.

I'd rather play Grant anyway. Who are your three from Arsenal - Sanchez, Giroud and? I think the fixtures of Arsenal are great for a defender and I would gladly have one alongside Sanchez and Giroud, but I like my expensive defenders too much to get someone from Arsenal.

He got me so many points he deserves to start this week. Sanchez, Giroud and Özil. I had Bellerin but then he got injured and I've decided to ignore our defence and focus on attacking options. My current plan is to have defenders from Chelsea, Spurs, Everton and WBA for the coming fixtures.

I don't think he'll drop, usually after a GW's end more people that look at last GW results make transfers and close to a new GW's start more people that look at the next fixtures make transfers, so I expect Hazard to even go green tomorrow/Saturday.

What is the deal with the huge attention to flags these days? Its all I bloody read about on this site. After 6+ years here ive never seen this much attention to something so bloody insignificant. We play a free game and these type of updates cannot be automated. It will get changed. If you are worried about a flag you need reassess your priorities.

Yes. They increase the threshold etc and if its a red flag they are reset. I know what they do but on the grand scheme of things is that really something to worried about? ALso why is it just a 2016/17 things why have they not been given this much attention on here in the last 6 years? Ive even read conspiracy theories that FPL take their time on purpose. What a load of guff.

Seems to me like people getting worked up about nothing.

It's not worth truly worry about but they DO make a real difference. Costa wouldn't of dropped Tuesday if his flag was removed as quickly as Giroud's.... These things make a difference

Last season the price wasn't reset for a player when a flag was removed. So that's why this year it makes the difference.

Well...its Defoe as the best candidate on the bench for me too.
And I agree. Spurs mid duo have a good chance to bring home attacking points against City.
I fency them more than Kane in this game. Especially Alli. He can drift in behind.
          defense like invisible.
Should have got that goal allowed against WBA:))
In fairness it was an offside...but very close:)
          Sanchez locked in C.
Defoe on the bench. He can't keep scoring like he has been. And he also played some part in cup yesterday. No goal for him this weekend.

    Ake & Kun > Baines & Lukaku (for a 8pt)

    C. Just do Ake>Baines

Hard to say without seeing the rest of your team... Good moves in principle, but whether it's worth a -8 depends on how badly you need them to play this week

Cheers, here is the rest of my team

You might be stuck if Evans doesn't play (assuming Ake and Amat do not).

Ake to Baines might be worth a -4. Aguero to Lukaku can definitely wait a week.

C - don't think it is worth that sort of hit and potentially gives you another week to see how MC responds. If you have other areas that also need strengthening, I think downgrading Kun is completely logical.

Just do Ake to Baines. -8 is a big hit to take out one of the best players in the game who has a home match.

Don't have any spurs (sold Walker when banned and Kane on Friday), don't have Alonso (priced out), don't have any Everton either.

Nah, you got a chance at redemption through a disciplined overhaul strategy. Silver lining is you aren't tied to many long held players at this point so you can jump on bandwagons earlier. First piece of advice, start by sorting out your defense with some solid options, then move on to focusing on playing hot hands in mid and forward lines.

No. Look at the cheap options for those teams. Here is something viable that gives you a shot, but has differentials in that could see you fly:

      Heaton - Jakupovic
      Luiz - Baines - Jones - Rose - Amat
      Alli - Pedro - Coutinho - Sterling - Mirallas
      Ibra - Giroud - Defoe

    Foster

    Brunt Daniels Bellerín

    Firmino (c) Ericksen Sánchez Antonio

    Rondon Lukaku Ibrahimovic

Got rid of sterling for firmino. Would have liked Couts but wanted to wait to see how he does before committing and firmino has had a week off and will be playing as the false 9 on Saturday. Need to catch up some serious points too so opting for a firmino as a differential captain as nobody else in my league has him. General thoughts on this and my team this GW?

They've conceded 3 goals in fair few games recentry and missing Francis and Ake who were first choice defs. Watford are poor and Daniels is a good option but I feel the other options have a higher ceiling for points.

Depends where you read it. There appears to be a direct quote from Wenger here:

      http://www.cleansheetsallround.co.uk/24515/arsenal-injury-news-update-walcott-bellerin-giroud-gibbs-mertesacker-coquelin

Although I have my doubts that Wenger refers directly to Giroud as 'the Arsenal striker".
