Having brought in several new faces during the January transfer window, Hull City completed their business with the deadline day signing of Poland international midfielder Kamil Grosicki from French side Rennes for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £7 million.

The 28-year-old winger agreed a three-and-a-half-year contract at the KCOM Stadium, and having been linked with Everton, West Ham United and Burnley, could represent something of a coup for the Tigers, and help fill the void left by Robert Snodgrass’ departure to the Hammers.

The History

Grosicki began his career at hometown club Pogoń Szczecin, and scored two goals in 23 appearances in his first season as a professional in 2006/07.

In the summer of 2007, Grosicki secured a move to Legia Warsaw but, after making just 11 appearances for his new club, requested a loan move due to personal reasons.

The midfielder initially moved to Swiss side Sion and registered two goals and a pair of assists in eight league outings before joining Polish side Jagiellonia Białystok on loan in February 2009.

He impressed during his temporary stint, with four goals and as many assists helping secure a permanent move ahead of 2009/10.

Grosicki enjoyed a strong campaign that year, registering four goals and six assists, with his impressive performances eventually securing a move to Turkish outfit Sivasspor in January 2011 for a fee of around £900,000.

The Pole would spend the next three years in Turkey, serving up 16 goals and 26 assists in 104 matches before signing for Rennes in January 2014.

Grosicki fared pretty well during his first six months at the club, managing three assists in 13 league appearances, but really found his form during the 2015/16 season, when he registered nine goals and four assists in 33 league matches.

During the first half of this season, Grosicki scored four goals and accrued three assists in 16 league outings.

Grosicki represented Poland at U18 and U21 levels, before making his senior debut as a substitute against Finland in February 2008.

He currently has 48 caps to his name to date, and has racked up an impressive nine goals and 14 assists.

The Prospects

Given Grosicki’s pedigree, particularly on the international stage, there’s every expectation he’ll be a regular starter in Silva’s new-look Hull side.

His main competition for a starting place looks to come from the likes of Lazar Markovic, Adama Diomande and perhaps Oumar Niasse, who can play on the right, as well as his preferred position as a central striker.

While Silva has trialled different systems during his time in charge at the KCOM Stadium so far, using a 3-5-1-1 in the 3-1 win over Bournemouth, and his favoured 4-2-3-1 in the 2-1 triumph over Man United in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg, it’s the latter that is expected to be used moving forward.

Grosicki looks perfectly suited for the position on the right of the attacking midfield trio, then, although he is also equally comfortable playing on the opposite flank.

The Pole’s strengths include his pace, dribbling and ability to pick out key passes in the final third, while his goal scoring record has improved over the past few seasons.

Looking at his underlying statistics so far this season, assessing them against those of the departed Snodgrass, it’s the Poland international who comes out on top.

Grosicki has averaged a goal attempt every 31.9 minutes, compared to every 46.2 minutes for the Scot, while the Poland international has created a chance every 39.6 minutes, slightly better than Snodgrass (every 40 minutes).

Whilst Rennes have been enjoying a more fruitful campaign than Hull, currently sat in ninth place in Ligue 1, meaning Grosicki should have had more opportunities to score and create, they at least provide an indicator he should be able to compensate for the loss of Snodgrass.

Grosicki’s price of 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks fair for a player who was so impressive during Poland’s run to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016.

Should the winger be able to settle quickly, and providing Silva can continue to integrate all of his new signings as impressively as he has done up to this point, he could well be a player to watch for the second half of the season.

Hull players are of particular interest for FPL bosses, given that they are one of only six teams guaranteed a fixture in Gameweek 28, where they entertain Swansea City, due to the FA Cup sixth round taking place on the same weekend.

That match comes in the middle of a very favourable run (BUR, lei, SWA, eve, WHM, MID) for Silva’s side, so their next two matches against Liverpool and Arsenal look ideal for assessing Grosicki and the rest of the new faces at the KCOM Stadium.

While many saw the exits of Jake Livermore and Snodgrass as signs of Hull waving the white flag, the performances under Silva have generally been very positive, so while Hull players haven’t featured prominently in our thoughts so far this season, that may be about to change.

By the time the kind run of fixtures gets underway, we’ll hopefully have a clearer picture of Silva’s favoured starting XI. Grosicki is expected to be a key part of the puzzle, though, and, as we’ve seen many times over the years, relegation candidates have a handy habit of offering up differential candidates in the final few months of the season when the battle to beat the drop intensifies.

You obviously want to get rid of Defoe, but getting Lukaku would make that frontline too heavy imo. Therefore you should look at a cheaper alternative to go with your two big hitters upfront. Swansea are picking up form and have no blanks, hence Llorente. Regarding Valencia, United blank twice and Chelsea have a great run of fixtures from GW 26 onwards.

Before players begin taking hits (-4s) for the 'blanks' and DGWs and skewing any hits data - I have spent some time looking at the hits the top 100 overall players have taken to assess whether there is value in taking hits and if it generally increases your overall rank into the coveted top 100.

Here are the results. Of the top 100:

    - 33% have taken no hits at all this season.
    - 41% have taken between 1-5 hits.
    - 22% have taken between 6-10 hits.
    - 4% have taken 11+ hits.

Worth noting at this point is that no one inside the top 100 has taken more than 12 hits (-48). Although there is a lot of talk on here about hits paying off, it generally isn't inside the top 100. On average these players have taken 3 hits all season, with the large majority (74%) having taken 5 or less in 23 gameweeks. To conclude, this data would suggest being more cautious before taking hits and being patient with your players.

tldr; the average number of hits the top players have taken is 3.02.

A high rank generally implies taking less hits, this is clear, but does taking less hits generally imply a higher rank? Most players on here are nowhere near the Top 100 players... I think your sample isn't actually helping to answer the question of whether taking hits is necessary in the general players position... I'd much prefer to take a 'random' sample of the Top 1m players instead... however I appreciate your effort 🙂

I agree with your comment, of course not many people on here are near the top 100, maybe the top 10000 would be more appropriate. I still think there's a lot to be said on these statistics for not kneejerking into hits which the top players clearly don't get tempted by generally.

I tend to follow the top 20 or so players very late in the season. Have always found a balanced mix of dullards and mavericks amongst them. Many mavericks make late charges , with hits paying off. So many factors involved , but both acumen and luck, in equal measures imo

So true. The dullard approach is where it's at if you want to get around top 10k, etc. Which is why I struggle to finish super low every season. I am a hits machine and am pretty impatient. The hits sometimes come off well, but often times not. Just thrown away points. But sugar pie honeybunch, I can't help myself!

Yeah - my gut feel is it doesn't really matter if you take hits or not, which means the -4 is pitched about right. Big hit takers can have a good or bad OR, as can those who don't take any hits. I think Wakey (a massive ht taker with a god OR) led a good discussion around this a couple of weeks ago.

I feel the most important thing is to look at your own transfers and game, was it worth it or not? Sometimes its wrong other ones it pays off. Teams are different people get injuries, suspensions etc.
The people in top 100 already have done it well, they dont maybe need any changes. They got the momentum.
I know even so my rank is just 200k that my hits have payed off 90% off the time.
The upside of taken some needed hits are often extremely huge, for instance my friend does not take hits. He had Sanchez on his mind before the game against West Ham, ,but he didnt want to take the hit. So instead he missed the 46poins because he had to wait to the next gmw.

I agree. The name of this Hot Topic is frankly false advertisement. The data doesn't tell us anything about whether a Top 100 player would take a hit in the average player's position; it only tells us that in their position they don't tend to take hits!

I see everybody is talking about what I came here to talk about. Aguero and Jesus. I had planned my transfers until GW28 as:
    GW24: Stanislas --> Sigurdsson
    GW25: Grant --> Randolph
    GW26: Aguero --> Kane
    GW27: Kane --> Aguero
GW28: Save transfer to have 2 for GW29

Now with Aguero benched and also my captain fr this week,I am not quite sure what to do. I could transfer him out for Gabriel but he isn't guaranteed to start either. How did City's defence look last night with Caballero in net? If it looked poor still but WHU didn't take their chances, there is a good chance Sigurdsson will score against them. If they looked more solid, maybe not.

Planning transfers this far in advance is never wise in the ever changing game that is football. I'd stick with your current plan for now. Grant to Randolph isn't entirely necessary GW25 which could let you get Kane in a bit earlier.

WHU vs WBA in GW25 - not a bad chance of a clean sheet there whereas Spurs are at Anfield. I hate Fantasy Football.

Yep , not wise to have fixed ideas so far ahead.
TBH if I had Aguero I would risk Captaining.
I think he starts and even as a sub is likely to get a haul

He played 20 mins last night and didn't get a haul. I think I may captain him though, as you suggest, but this will be the Last Chance Saloon for him.

No way. He is playing 60-70 minutes at a time and Sigurdsson is also playing both GW26 and 28, is playing in a forward position and also takes setpieces and the attack goes through him. Sigurdsson over Stanislas any day of the week.

Keep trickling in those that don't blank GW28 for now that still improve your team, and see how things develop. You'll then have the flexibility to change plans if needed when more DGW/blank info emerges over the next few weeks.

Well, if I want to keep Stanislas and bring in Sigurdsson (which I do), it means getting rid of Alli or Sanchez as my other 2 midfielders are Phillips (unlucky not to score the other day) and Antonio, who are both playing in both GWs. I will have 8-9 players for GW28 anyway and 10 for GW26.

    helped financed by

McAuley -> Yoshida - any other 4.3 def (not everton)

    any good??

Wouldn't get rid of McAuley, but if you really want to carry out that first transfer, look at Hull's Robertson for 4.3. They've tightened up under Silva, don't suffer any blanks and have good fixtures around that period. (BUR, lei, SWA)

Already gone. Got 11.6 for him last night (I re-bought him at 11.3) and his price is going to drop like a stone next few weeks.

Arsenal are a bit out of sorts at the moment, and have Chelsea + Liverpool (both away) plus 2 blanks! in the next 5.... Not worth me holding onto him whilst he depreciates and blanks. Yeah it's Sanchez and he could still score big against anyone, and yeah the Hull game is enticing to keep him for but I'll ride that one out, Hull have looked miles better lately too.

Will almost definitely get him back in GW29 when I anticipate he'll be 11.4-11.5 anyway so I'll probably make some coin as well as cover the blanks.

    7. Sancidino
      • 9 Years

It's just that I am loosing 0.4 if I sell him but it's really heavy to have 11.5 stuck in the bench...

With 2 blanks and i tough fixture, I am definitely selling. I got him in 11.9 could get him back 11.7 by gw29

        • 11 Years
        8 years, 10 months ago

        Oh at least!

He could quite conceivably lose 0.3m per week once the first blank hits - casuals will move him on en masse and the price changes are brutal this year.

I wouldn't actually be surprised if it's possible to buy him back at 11.2-11.3m by the time GW29 rolls around, especially if he somehow blanks over the next 2.

      No brainer, get that done.

Can't see Jones starting this weekend even though his injury isn't as bad as first feared. United have cover options so no need to risk him.
