A day notable, in the main, for fortuitous goals and returns.

It began with Alexis Sanchez breaking the hearts of the 75,000 who had jettisoned him early ahead of the Gameweek 26 blank. Notching his first via a gloved hand, the next arrived in stoppage time – his second at the death penalty in the space of four Gameweeks.

With referee Mark Clattenburg reportedly admitting, on review at half-time, that the opening goal was handled, the Sanchez returns will be a particularly bitter pill to swallow for his non-owners.

But arguably Sanchez makes his own luck. Once again he was Arsenal’s bright spark in a performance that was otherwise laboured and lacklustre.

The Chilean could and should have scored earlier and, over his 90 minutes, recorded six efforts on goal.

In his last four Emirates matches, he’s provided a total of 31 efforts – in each of those Gameweeks he’s registered more attempts than any other player. Quite simply, he is untouchable as a source of pure goal threat.

If you don’t own Sanchez, he rarely makes for pleasant viewing.

Similarly, at least among defenders, West Brom’s Gareth McAuley is arguably peerless as a threat to opponents.

Going into the trip to the London Stadium, the centre-back had converted four of his five headers on target into goals – all had direct arrived from corners.

Today he made it five, although it could hardly have been a more fortuitous effort.

Taking up his customary position inside the box for a late Chris Brunt corner, it was adjudged that McAuley got the last touch on Jonny Evans header.

In fairness, the goal was immediately chalked up as his when it arrived via Opta. In real-time his touch seemed indiscernible and yet it was a decision later reviewed and upheld by the Premier League Match Centre.

McAuley had wheeled away to celebrate and, as the last West Brom player to get a touch, the goal was credited as his fifth of the season – again from a corner.

Like Sanchez, McAuley is an asset that, perhaps through endeavour, fortune has favoured this season.

Coming alive at set-pieces, he has delivered reliably when the Baggies defence gives way.

Just as Sanchez’ energy and raw goal threat almost inevitably brings reward by the whistle, so McAuley’s mere presence in the box on the end of deliveries from Matt Phillips or Brunt, has delivered unexpected points; no more unexpected than today’s.

Some Fantasy managers will have benefited from both these lucky charms but, given the statistics in their name to this point, clearly both Sanchez and McAuley have been buying lottery tickets all season. Today their numbers came up.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

What's everyone's biggest differential that they own ? A starting differential at that.

It's always the same 30/35 player pool we seem to select from around here !

Mines Barnes , but really rarely play him

    Barnes 2.9%
    Pieters 7.3%

The biggest injustice yesterday wasn't the McAuley goal it was the referees performance in the Arsenal v Hull game

He was awful - failed to spot a handball goal and failed to send an Arsenal player off.... Resule would have been completely different and Sanchez would have had 2 points

These decisions had more of an impact on FPL yesterday than the McAuley goal people seem to forget these things

Only difference being referee's have to make split second decisions. FPL towers can view the incident numerous times and deliberate for hours to ensure the correct decision is made.

All the same it was poor refereeing

It completely does, the point I was making is the referee has to make split second decisions. Whoever awarded the goal to McCauley doesn't.

Agree - there's luck attached to Sanchez goal but nothing shady and underhanded. Unlike the Evans goal where some childish, power-mad little turd at Opta / FPL decides they will take into I to their own hands to suit themselves. Of course the one guy who represents this site and ifs passionate users owns Macauley and has the character of a mouse so won't speak up in case he loses his comfy number with FPL...

Can't believe the ref didn't get a message through his earwig whilst he was talking to the linesman - sort of unofficial video ref - it does seem to happen at times when the ref is obviously concentrating on something being said over the comms.

What about the handball by Hull a few minutes before the opening goal? No one seems to be talking about that. Also if an Arsenal player was fouled in the same manner as Gibbs, he would have been deemed to be "soft" and it would have also been said that the Hull player "wanted it more" like what happened at Stamford Bridge.

    My front 8:
    Sanchez hazard alli philips davies
    Lukaku costa ibra

    A) sanchez - > mane
    B) sanchez + davies + philips - > mane + barkley + morrison for - 4
    C) sanchez + davies - > eriksen + barkley

Would love to get mane and barkley but sort of 0.2 so have to downgrade phil to morrison, is it worth? Or just play davies and philips for next BGW?

Crazy isn't it. I was talking last week about assists. How it's crazy that Costa got the assist for the Hazard goal. Lukaku didn't get one for the McCarthy goal. This week it's Brunt not getting one for the Evans/McAuley goal. Fine margins in FPL.

Mate I'm honestly not worried about the 3pts. I just can't fathom how it's not an Evans goal.

On first view i thought it was Evans. After a few more angles I can see why its been looked at. After that Im not arsed about the decision, cant see the reason to worry about it

Lukaku celebrates when its not even his. He had a shoestring touch once & tried to claim that goal from that everton kid

Mark you're a thoroughly decent guy whose time and effort creating and developing this site is hugely appreciated but that pathetic attempt at justifying the decision to award Macauley the goal is laughable. "In fairness"?? There's nothing fair about it! I've never been one to get angry about assist awards etc but having just seen the replay of the goal around a dozen times this decision is without question the most biased and embarrassing I've seen in my 7 years of playing this game.

          ADVICE:
          Team: Heaton (Grant)
          Baines Brunt Alonso Coleman Mee
          Alli Siggy Morrison Snoddy (Sanchez)
          Lukaku (Jesus Ibra)

          A) Leave it as it is
          B) Costa in for Ibra
          C) Mane in for Sanchez
          D) Mane and Costa in for Sanchez and Ibra

I can currently field 11 players for next week, but I'll lose 0.1m for each Ibra price drop. Have Lukaku and Kane, so...

          A) Get Gabbiadini (not to play, hope for 2 price rises)
          B) Costa (playing Swansea at home)
          C) Suck it up and possibly take a 0.3m decrease

Costa vs Swansea looks good too? And West Ham are pretty leaky.
Man Utd don't score many at home. Plus 2 x Europa games, League Cup, FA cup...who knows what he'll be like in 4 weeks time.

We'll see how tomorrow and the FA cup games go. If I had Costa, I'd save. It's more a waste of transfer for someone who will in all likelihood blank in GW 28.

Costa rarely scores more than one goal neither does he obtain much BPS.

          A) Sterling -> x
          B) Amat & Sterling -> Baines & Snod/Phillips (-4)
          C) Amat & Sterling -> Mori & Barkley/Antonio/Lanzini (-4)

          Benteke, Carroll

I considered it, but there aren't many expensive players I want for 26-28 given that most will likely blank in 28. Lukaku is the only one, and he is away at Spurs next week, so I have him pencilled in for 28.

I could be in big trouble here. 29 with Alonso and Siggy (c) to play. Not captaining Sanchez this week could be the biggest mistake of the season for me.
