More time, fewer players: the captaincy decision for Gameweek 26 is somewhat unique.

While the Premier League takes a weekend off to concentrate on the FA Cup, our latest poll has to make do without assets from EFL Cup finalists Southampton and Manchester United, as well as their respective league opponents Arsenal and Manchester City.

This could hand Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (10.2) and Diego Costa (10.5) an opportunity to compete for the summit, as they prepare to welcome a resurgent Swansea City to Stamford Bridge.

While the Swans are much improved under Paul Clement, they have still mustered just a single clean sheet and conceded nine goals in his five matches in charge.

Costa’s strong track record against the Welsh side could also weigh in his favour: he’s scored seven goals against them over three seasons.

As mentioned in last night’s Stock Check, however, Costa’s form is coming into question: he’s delivered a modest three goals over his last eight Gameweek starts.

Hazard’s remarkable home record perhaps edges him above the striker in the armband pecking order, with five of the Belgian’s six double-digit hauls arriving on home turf.

The pair of Blues assets are owned by around a third of FPL managers.

Pedro (6.9), who found the net against Burnley on Sunday, is another Chelsea player that enjoys home comforts, with three of his five double-figure returns arriving at Stamford Bridge.

Having torn into a hapless Bournemouth in his previous home outing, Romelu Lukaku (9. 9) will surely be heavily backed for the visit of an erratic Sunderland defence.

The Black Cats earned a surprise 4-0 away victory against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 24, but were sunk 2-0 at West Brom in their previous road trip, and shipped four without reply at home to Southampton on Saturday.

Ross Barkley (7.1), who scored and earned an assist in the 6-3 rout of Eddie Howe’s side in Gameweek 24, could also attract attention.

Liverpool look to be the other prime source of captaincy candidates as they prepare to visit a Leicester City side in freefall.

The Foxes have shipped nine goals in their last four league encounters and last kept a clean sheet back in Gameweek 20.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp’s troops look resurgent following the return of winger Sadio Mane (9.2) from the Africa Cup of Nations. A quick-fire brace against Spurs on Saturday evening should establish him as the favoured Reds option over team-mates Philippe Coutinho (8.2) and Roberto Firmino (8.4).

The Brazilian pair have 13 goals between them this term, but Firmino has registered returns in just two of his previous seven Gameweek starts, while Coutinho’s last goal was back in Gameweek 11.

However, it should be noted that as mentioned in our recent Stock Check and this report, there’s a possibility that Liverpool may yet miss their Gameweek 26 fixture should Millwall take Leicester City to a replay in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

With a four-man defence favoured in the absence of the injured Danny Rose, the Spurs attack has struggled of late. Since the left-back hobbled off away to Sunderland in Gameweek 23, Mauricio Pochettino’s men have scored just once.

While this may temper interest in their key attacking assets Harry Kane (11.2), Dele Alli (8.8) and Christian Eriksen (8.7), a home clash against Stoke City could yet revive their stock. On the road, the Potters have conceded 21 goals, keeping just two clean sheets.

West Brom’s Chris Brunt (5.1) must rank among the top differential armband options on offer. He faces a home tie against the league’s most obliging defence when Bournemouth pay visit.

The injury-ravaged Cherries rearguard has shipped 13 goals in their last four matches ahead of a meeting with Manchester City tonight. Meanwhile, Brunt has served up 61 FPL points, including three double-digit hauls, in his last seven Hawthorns matches.

The Irishman’s strong track record is likely to give him the edge over Baggies striker Salomon Rondon (6.7), who last scored in Gameweek 16, and winger Matt Phillips (5.9), who will be looking to avoid his sixth successive blank.

Hull City’s Oumar Niasse (5.6) is another potential punt. With Abel Hernandez sidelined, the Everton loanee will be relied upon as a source of goals in the forthcoming Gameweeks, starting with their home encounter with Burnley. The Clarets remain a travel-sick side, shipping 24 goals and earning a solitary shut out on the road.

Harry Maguire (4.4) may well be another candidate among the Hull’s ranks, providing the promise of points at both ends of the pitch.

The Clarets attack has scored a mere five times on the road, while Maguire boasts more goal attempts than any other defender since he gained regular starts in Gameweek 15.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of next week’s deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

I have Phillips. I am debating bringing in Josh King for him. I appreciate this is a bit of a sideways move but Phillips hasn't been doing the business recently and King is up top at the moment. Silly move?

It's one of those moves where you just know the next game Phillips will get a haul. As a 4th mid I'm happy to leave him for now and let him tick along. I gather he is playing ok?

Very, its a bit like Alli v Erik, you are just chasing pts,,, stick with 1 ....most likely Phillips's turn next 2 games and he has been playing well, just no returns. Majority are sticking, at least for next 2 games...

Thoughts on my starting 11 for GW 26!! Would anyone change this starting 11?? Ive got 1TF with nil ITB

      Gk Foster

      Def Azpilicueta/Pieters/Coleman/Holgate

      Mid Allen/Alli/Siggy/Phillips

      For Lukaku(C)/Costa(V)

      Subs Pickford/Ibrahimovic/Sanchez/Jones

My only concern is Holgate will he start??

I dont think so, it seems that he, along with matic ,are the ones always sacrificed for willian or fab , even if they are playing well. sometimes I think Conte thinks willian might suit a particular game and that means pedro is benched

He is certainly tempting....but like Mata couod be frustrating to own(always checking team sheet etc and if starts probs only plays 70'). Conte mentioned before he prefers Pedro in more home games and Willian away(especially v more physical teams)

      1FT
      Bank: 0.9

      Heaton
      Walker - Cedric - Alonso
      Sanchez - Eriksen - Sigurdsson - Phillips
      Benteke - Ibrahimovic - Lukaku
Subs: Jakupovic, Ake, Rannochia and De Roon.

I really want Hazard to join my team. How can I get him without great loss of quality? Do you have ideas?

I still have all 3 chips, when do you recommend playing AOA? I know it's fairly useless, would you only use it if you happen to have a strong 5th midfielder rather than actively plan to use it?

Regarding a DGW would you always go bench boost over triple (c)?

I keep it as a safety option in case of suspension or bad fixture stacking for my defenders.
With people arguing playing 4 at the back it's kinda worthless.

Can also be used around GW 35/36 if you've gotten 5 decent midfielders on your WC for them DGW's and want to capitalize.

I don't understand the fuzz about Costa's returns

        Ibra is just as bad

        Costa: 6 - 0 - 8 - 2 = 16

        Ibra: 2 - 2 - 6 - 5 = 15

        B. Pedro instead of Hazard for funds and flexibility

        Hello all,

        Current team, 1Ft, 0.2 ITB

        Heaton (jaku)
Alonso, Baines, Brunt, Pieters, Funes Mori
        Siggy, Phillips, King (Sanchez, KDB)
        Lukaku (Jesus, Ibra)

Early thinking is Sanchez to Haz. Is this enough or should I swap out Ibra to Costa or Kane for a hit? Man City has SUN week 27 so thinking I should bench them for this week. Won't do anything till after FA cup, but would appreciate any advice.

        Coutinho siggy zaha de roon
        Costa kane carroll
        Sub: mannone sanchez friend holgate
        3.8 in the bank
How is the idea to replace friend with alderweirld and play 442 and play alder in starting instead de roon ? Spurs has great long term fixtures And I don't have defence from that

I would favour Everton defence (Baines/ Coleman) over Toby. Spurs arent playing well atm.

Waiting until after FA Cup games to make any moves, but 2FT and 2.2m ITB, it's burning a hole in my pocket.

        Pickford / Grant
        Pieters / Holebas / Chambers / Alonso/ Coleman
        Sanchez / Erick/ Alli / Fletcher / Phillips
        Ibra/ Lukaku / Benteke

        Where should my priority be?

Could do something like Benteke + Alli/ Erick>>Mane/Hazard + Costa for example but really not sure how to navigate the blanks.

Siggy over mane if you want to start gearing up for the blanks. I like the benteke > costa move.

Any preference on Alli/ Erick to get the axe, bought at same price(ish) so not concerned with value ties in?

Sanchez --- > Siggy would be my move,

with the idea of buying Sanchez back for Phillips for GW 29.

6 green arrows in my last 7 GWs but only gone from 221k-140k OR. Steady progress nonetheless, but little things are holding me back. (the little thing is Chilean)

hard to predict as that is quite a while away, but if my premium mids are not performing then most probably he will come in.

I think there are a couple of problems with football that are easy to change:
-Time not being added on during added time if a goal, injury or time wasting occurs in added time (I.e if there are 4 minutes of additional time but a team scores during that the ref will blow at 94 minutes but should blow at 95)
-Book goalkeepers for time wasting at goal kicks early on, they only ever get booked for it past 80 minutes

        Thoughts?

          1) They do? Or at the very least, should. Stoppage time is the minimum amount of time to be added.

          2) I think it's very difficult to monitor. Being at bit slow 3 minutes in to a match at 0-0 is a bit different to being 1-0 up, momentum against you and purposefully holding up play. It's about intent, not time - it just so happens that the intent generally happens later in a game.

I think they should probably work on making the decisive refereeing decisions accurate such as penalties being awarded and incorrect offsides before they start fixing these minor ones...

wait for FA cup games, a Leicester draw could mean you have to shift Mane, or a Fulham win would make Zlatan -> Kane a possibility

Cheers for the heads up, so that has just given me reason to hold the transfer until later with a clearer picture of what to do, I'm hoping!

Wait for a week and a half then make a decison once we have a full fixture list. I would be ditching a player there though... perhaps an obvious Sanchez --> Hazard and bench Mawson and de Roon over Hazard and Chambers.

        Foster
        Alonso - Coleman - Nyom
        Sanchez* - Alli - Sigurdsson - Pedro - Capoue
        Lukaku - Rondon

        Pickford, Ibrahimovic*, Valencia*, Amat

        1 FT 2.2 ITB

        A) Sanchez -> Hazard
        B) Amat -> Maguire

Not considering Ibra to Costa. Will probably captain Zlatan in 27.

        Need some thoughts here guys...

        Boruc

        Alonso Mcauley Holebas

        Coutinho Phillips Alli Carroll

        Costa Rondon Kane

        Subs

        Pick Amat Sanchez Cedric

        Used the 2 fts for

        Zlatan > Costa &
        Sterling > Coutinho

        1.4 itb...
Would it be worth to get a -4 for Cedric > Coleman and play 4-3-3 with Carroll on the bench??

I don't think so... also I think those transfer were a tad premature but hopefully you won't be a victim of a changed fixture list by the end of the week... e.g. Liverpool vs Leicester won't go ahead if Leicester draw in the FA cup
