A single goal from an unlikely source takes Chelsea into the FA Cup semi-finals following a feisty match with Manchester United.

Chelsea 1 Manchester United 0

N’Golo Kante’s fine strike was enough to see off a battling Manchester United who played much of a compelling encounter with ten men.

The Chelsea midfielder, who was set up by Willian, steered home a shot from outside the box after the break.

The goal had an air of inevitability about it – the Blues out-shot their visitors by 20 to four and enjoyed 73% possession – but much of that dominance arose after Ander Herrera was sent off for a second yellow card.

The actual foul that led to the Spaniard’s dismissal was almost nondescript, but he was essentially paying for the sins of a team who had spent the first-half targeting Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard.

Herrera will now miss the next two league matches against Middlesbrough and West Brom – this was his second sending-off of the season – although that will have little Fantasy impact as the midfielder is owned by just 0.7%.

United’s task was always going to be a tough one. Without the suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Jose Mourinho looked like having to cobble together a side shorn of any recognised forward at all until Marcus Rashford, who had been ill, declared himself fit enough to play.

The young England forward acquitted himself well but will rue seeing the one clear chance he had saved by the otherwise under-employed Thibaut Courtois.

Having trialled a back three in the Europa League draw with Rostov, Mourinho was expected to roll out the same formation at Stamford Bridge, only to demonstrate his squad’s flexibility by reverting to a back four.

Phil Jones was again in the starting XI but deployed in a holding midfield role, charged mainly with attempting to diffuse the threat from Hazard. It remains to be seen if Mourinho persists with this ploy: it seems likely that Jones will now revert to a central defensive role.

At 4.7, Jones represents the cheapest of United regular starters in defence, and could capitalise on an immediate schedule that involves Middlesbrough, West Brom, Everton and Sunderland, with the toughest of those matches, Everton, taking place at Old Trafford.

The case for Jones would be strengthened further still if Marcos Rojo is cited for what appeared to be a stamp on Diego Costa, with whom he had a running battle all evening.

Rashford (6.4) also looks good for further starts as Ibrahimovic will miss the next two league matches and Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial are struggling to overcome the injuries that forced them out of last night’s clash. Certainly, for the clashes with Boro and West Brom, Rashford could offer a short-term differential.

For Chelsea, Pedro’s position as an unused sub in last night’s match could raise mild concern for his growing band of 9% FPL owners. The Spaniard is the fourth most transferred in midfielder since last weekend, having provided two goals and a pair of assists in his last three, yet he resorted to bench-warming duties as Willian was preferred on the right of the front three instead. Nonetheless, Pedro will be expected to earn a recall at Stoke City in Gameweek 29.

Indeed, with Victor Moses forced off with a reported calf problem in the latter stages, both Pedro and Willian could be unleashed from the start at the bet365 this weekend if the Nigerian fails to make it; Pedro would be the likely deputy at right wing-back.

The all-Premier League semi-finals – Chelsea v Tottenham and Man City v Arsenal – will take place over the weekend of April 22 and 23 during Gameweek 34.

Man City could be in Champions League quarter-final action leading up to that weekend, but there looks to be scope for the Gameweek fixtures involving all four teams to be moved to the midweek after the FA Cup semi-finals.

Chelsea are due to entertain Southampton, Spurs are at Leicester, Arsenal are home to Sunderland and Man City host West Brom.

Chelsea XI: Courtois, Azpilicueta, Luiz, Cahill, Moses (Zouma 89), Kante, Matic, Alonso, Willian (Fabregas 81), Costa (Batshuayi 90+4), Hazard.
Subs not used: Begovic, Pedro, Terry, Chalobah.

Man United XI: de Gea, Jones, Smalling, Rojo, Valencia, Ander Herrera, Pogba, Darmian, Mkhitaryan (Fellaini 37), Rashford, Young (Lingard 81).
Subs not used: Romero, Bailly, Mata, Carrick, Blind.

    Heaton Grant
    Alonso Coleman Brunt PVA Olsson
    Mané Firmino Coutinho Sigurdsson Lanzini
    Agüero Lukaku Llorente

My team is a mess right now. Any suggestions for future transfers? I have one free transfer and 0.8m in the bank. I'm in no rush to sell PVA (bought for 5.0) and I'll probably wait for the pressers to find out if Firmino, Olsson and Llorente are fit to feature this weekend. Buying back Sánchez is on my mind, I just haven't decided yet if I'm gonna do it before or after international break. I think I need one Spurs mid. and def. too. I'll take hits to fix the situation and save WC for DGW.

Yes, for this week. Has a good record vs City and if he does well you have 2 good home games which follow in Bournemouth and Everton. If he doesn't do well vs City, you can switch to Alli etc.

So if he does well vs City then he's a good option for the following 2, but if he fails to deliver then he's not so good for those exact same fixtures & should be switched to someone else?

weighing up selling in the context of getting in Sanchez for Couts - obvious switch would be to Costa, but I've owned him twice already this season and never been greatly excited by him as an owner..Ibra a couple of weeks down the line could be tempting. Vardy the left field option

And when to bring him in? This week before WB away - a relative differential at 28% ownership in the top 10K in GW28. Note that he also is going to SA and Wenger does have history in GW4 so maybe GW31 is best time.

A lot of people seems to be going heavy in midfield now, or switching to 3-5-2. What are the best mid-price strikers to focus on if you'd ignore Costa (and instead go for Haz), Kane, Aguero and Ibra (for now). How do you rank the likes of Gabbiadini, Defoe, Deeney etc. in the weeks to come?

What's the optimal goal keeper pairing fir the coming weeks till just before DGWs and WCs?
Take Into consideration fixtures, form, price and not using up valuable spots.

Add on to the keeper question:

For people choosing to WC early, which keeper combo do we prefer. And if money not an issue, should we go for premium ones? Or we still better off with budget keepers maximizing the cash onto the outfield players for DGW?

No chance I'm doing that. I've been stung before by having non-playing keepers... And both jaku and Pickford could be yanked out of goal any random GW... Having both of them is as cheap as I'll go, but I don't think you'll get clean sheets

Why wait until the GW36 for WC and BB in GW37 if we get to know the fixtures well before GW32. Maybe WC earlier with DGW players in mind and ride the fixtures until then and still have more than enough transfers until BB-ing in GW37. Lots of points can be lost if we just wait.

      2) With Kane out of the team, who is Tottenham's best attacking player?

      3) With 10 games to go, what is your target for overall rank?

      4) Who are the essential players for the business end of the season?

      Eriksen: 15 pts
      Son: 26 pts

      What's your verdict?

Would BB in DGW34 (even though probably with less teams involved) be better than in DGW37, when there would conceivably be less teams with anything to play for, thus raising the possibility of more rotation?

    40. AA33
      9 years, 4 months ago

Do the managers heavily rotate their starting XI towards the end of season, like for Chelsea who could secure the title before DGW 37, and mid-table teams who will have nothing to play for? If so then DGW 37 may not be as fruitful as earlier thought.

Which is the best strategy when it comes to GKs, if playing WC in the next few GWs?
      A. Get a premium GK in the hope of taking advantage of fixtures and/or DGWs (Lloris, DDG, Cech, etc.).
      B. Keep the funds for rest of the team and play Pickford/Jaku for the rest of the season.

Take a further hit or sit tight until after the international break?

Does Kane's injury along with Ibra's suspension really mean that - for the short term at least - 3-5-2 is back on the table as the most viable formation?

It felt that just weeks ago we were back to 3-4-3, especially with Gabbiadini's explosive start; but with a lack of premium forwards up and about with good fixtures; it feels a kneejerk move to go 3-5-2 but one that would likely pay off short/mid term.

The Son differential. Marked as Mid I cannot see Janssen getting Kane's place. At 6.8 and getting the forward role in such a side must make him the absolute choice going forward until Kane returns. Is it worth doubling up on Spurs Mids though?

1)Eriksen/Alli or So?If we have one of them should we double up especially with Kane's absence?Otherwise who is the next choice?Sanchez/Hazard or someone else?

2)Mane/Coutinho or Firmino? If we have two of them should we sell one and get one of the above?

3)With Kane,Ibra out and Kun not productive and only a few other forwards as a third choice(Defoe,Deeney,Gabia) should our system remain 3-5-2 or we should change to 3-4-3?

Is it harder to win at FPL if you live outside of the UK?

Surely someone can analyse the winners of the past few seasons and split them by location. I've certainly found it harder now I live in Sydney compared to when I lived in the UK:

      - I don't get to watch as many live games anymore because of the time difference
      - The catch up highlights show here isn't a patch on MOTD
      - Football isn't part of the mainstream Australian sporting culture
      - I don't get up-to-date team news for UK evening games unless I'm awake at 4am!

Maybe those of us who play and live in Australia should get a positive points handicap 😉

    Hi guys

I brought Kane in for Ibra on Saturday evening to take the price rise...
    Here is the team:

    Grant - Heaton
Baines - Brunt - McAuley - Olsson - Funes Mori
    Mane - Eriksen - Sigurdson - Antonio - T Carroll
    Aguero - Lukaku - Kane
    0 FT & 0.5 ITB

With Kane (most likely) out, Olsson and Baines uncertain, Funes Mori not playing, and WBA fixtures I'm really considering WC.
    Any thoughts?

    1. Theholygoalie
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

I would do Kane to Costa then Funes Mori for a -4 and/or Brunt/McAuley -8 to whoever you want at the back given your budget. Maybe Walker & Jones. Just wouldn't wildcard as you midfield is sweet as are your other two strikers.

Gabbi is another good shout for Kane then that really would give you every option at the back.

I see a lot of people getting rid of Aguero now, I'm intrigued as to why?

It was in my plans to bring Kane in as he would be a great option over the coming weeks BUT with him and Ibra out, is it not worth keeping Kun? Costa is another option but looks a bit tired. Is it time for Chelsea to tighten up and get 1-0's to the title? I guess he's most likely to score, though.

Anyways my point is, City/Aguero Vs Liverpool and Arsenal aren't actually THAT bad fixtures. For me it's worth holding.

I'm not that keen on the fixtures until gw35. I'd like to see Sunderland improve first if i was going to get him earlier. At the moment i think there's better options but Defoe can do it on his own so i can't say it's a bad pick. I've got a feeling we won't see a fight this season and they'll disappoint.

Is Bellerin the best defender differential over the next 6 weeks?

Looked brilliant in the FA Cup this weekend, faces some rubbish teams in the EPL as well.

I would rather buy Walker than Bellerin.

I was looking at Kosc for the run in, are any Arsenal defenders worth it considering their current state?

    Heaton Pickford
    Alonso Coleman Brunt Pieters Robertson
    Mane Eriksen Coutinho Siggy Snodgrass
    Kane Lukaku Rondon

Kane and Snodgrass to defoe and sanchez?
    Kane to costa?

Hello guys. What would you do with this lot:

    Heaton
    Brunt, Baines, Alonso
    Sigurdsson, Mane, Antonio, Coutinho
    Lukaku, Aguero, Llorente

subs: Foster --- Robertson, Clayton, Holgate --- 1 FT, 5.1 ITB

    A) Coutinho -> Alli
    B) Coutinho -> Sanchez
    D) Llorente -> Costa
