A single goal from an unlikely source takes Chelsea into the FA Cup semi-finals following a feisty match with Manchester United.

Chelsea 1 Manchester United 0

N’Golo Kante’s fine strike was enough to see off a battling Manchester United who played much of a compelling encounter with ten men.

The Chelsea midfielder, who was set up by Willian, steered home a shot from outside the box after the break.

The goal had an air of inevitability about it – the Blues out-shot their visitors by 20 to four and enjoyed 73% possession – but much of that dominance arose after Ander Herrera was sent off for a second yellow card.

The actual foul that led to the Spaniard’s dismissal was almost nondescript, but he was essentially paying for the sins of a team who had spent the first-half targeting Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard.

Herrera will now miss the next two league matches against Middlesbrough and West Brom – this was his second sending-off of the season – although that will have little Fantasy impact as the midfielder is owned by just 0.7%.

United’s task was always going to be a tough one. Without the suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Jose Mourinho looked like having to cobble together a side shorn of any recognised forward at all until Marcus Rashford, who had been ill, declared himself fit enough to play.

The young England forward acquitted himself well but will rue seeing the one clear chance he had saved by the otherwise under-employed Thibaut Courtois.

Having trialled a back three in the Europa League draw with Rostov, Mourinho was expected to roll out the same formation at Stamford Bridge, only to demonstrate his squad’s flexibility by reverting to a back four.

Phil Jones was again in the starting XI but deployed in a holding midfield role, charged mainly with attempting to diffuse the threat from Hazard. It remains to be seen if Mourinho persists with this ploy: it seems likely that Jones will now revert to a central defensive role.

At 4.7, Jones represents the cheapest of United regular starters in defence, and could capitalise on an immediate schedule that involves Middlesbrough, West Brom, Everton and Sunderland, with the toughest of those matches, Everton, taking place at Old Trafford.

The case for Jones would be strengthened further still if Marcos Rojo is cited for what appeared to be a stamp on Diego Costa, with whom he had a running battle all evening.

Rashford (6.4) also looks good for further starts as Ibrahimovic will miss the next two league matches and Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial are struggling to overcome the injuries that forced them out of last night’s clash. Certainly, for the clashes with Boro and West Brom, Rashford could offer a short-term differential.

For Chelsea, Pedro’s position as an unused sub in last night’s match could raise mild concern for his growing band of 9% FPL owners. The Spaniard is the fourth most transferred in midfielder since last weekend, having provided two goals and a pair of assists in his last three, yet he resorted to bench-warming duties as Willian was preferred on the right of the front three instead. Nonetheless, Pedro will be expected to earn a recall at Stoke City in Gameweek 29.

Indeed, with Victor Moses forced off with a reported calf problem in the latter stages, both Pedro and Willian could be unleashed from the start at the bet365 this weekend if the Nigerian fails to make it; Pedro would be the likely deputy at right wing-back.

The all-Premier League semi-finals – Chelsea v Tottenham and Man City v Arsenal – will take place over the weekend of April 22 and 23 during Gameweek 34.

Man City could be in Champions League quarter-final action leading up to that weekend, but there looks to be scope for the Gameweek fixtures involving all four teams to be moved to the midweek after the FA Cup semi-finals.

Chelsea are due to entertain Southampton, Spurs are at Leicester, Arsenal are home to Sunderland and Man City host West Brom.

Chelsea XI: Courtois, Azpilicueta, Luiz, Cahill, Moses (Zouma 89), Kante, Matic, Alonso, Willian (Fabregas 81), Costa (Batshuayi 90+4), Hazard.
Subs not used: Begovic, Pedro, Terry, Chalobah.

Man United XI: de Gea, Jones, Smalling, Rojo, Valencia, Ander Herrera, Pogba, Darmian, Mkhitaryan (Fellaini 37), Rashford, Young (Lingard 81).
Subs not used: Romero, Bailly, Mata, Carrick, Blind.

Especially if you already have the Mane double up and considering Cout will need to jet off to SA next week for the international break + Firmino still uncertain for this weekend

Yes, for this week. Has a good record vs City and if he does well you have 2 good home games which follow in Bournemouth and Everton. If he doesn't do well vs City, you can switch to Alli etc.

So if he does well vs City then he's a good option for the following 2, but if he fails to deliver then he's not so good for those exact same fixtures & should be switched to someone else?

          Gotcha, thanks.

weighing up selling in the context of getting in Sanchez for Couts - obvious switch would be to Costa, but I've owned him twice already this season and never been greatly excited by him as an owner..Ibra a couple of weeks down the line could be tempting. Vardy the left field option

With an injury to Kane, Ibra banned and Costa looking a bit tired a lot of us are contemplating striking options.

Deeney, Gabbiadini, and Defoe all look good to me - who do you prefer? Or even Barnes and go 3-5-2 to make room for Sanchez or Hazard?

And when to bring him in? This week before WB away - a relative differential at 28% ownership in the top 10K in GW28. Note that he also is going to SA and Wenger does have history in GW4 so maybe GW31 is best time.

A lot of people seems to be going heavy in midfield now, or switching to 3-5-2. What are the best mid-price strikers to focus on if you'd ignore Costa (and instead go for Haz), Kane, Aguero and Ibra (for now). How do you rank the likes of Gabbiadini, Defoe, Deeney etc. in the weeks to come?

What's the optimal goal keeper pairing fir the coming weeks till just before DGWs and WCs?
Take Into consideration fixtures, form, price and not using up valuable spots.

(I'm on Foster/Boruc at the moment, but need to change it up...)

Add on to the keeper question:

For people choosing to WC early, which keeper combo do we prefer. And if money not an issue, should we go for premium ones? Or we still better off with budget keepers maximizing the cash onto the outfield players for DGW?

No chance I'm doing that. I've been stung before by having non-playing keepers... And both jaku and Pickford could be yanked out of goal any random GW... Having both of them is as cheap as I'll go, but I don't think you'll get clean sheets

Why wait until the GW36 for WC and BB in GW37 if we get to know the fixtures well before GW32. Maybe WC earlier with DGW players in mind and ride the fixtures until then and still have more than enough transfers until BB-ing in GW37. Lots of points can be lost if we just wait.

My intended transfer this game week was to bring Kane in. But with Kane possibly out, I've got money for a heavy hitter:

Would BB in DGW34 (even though probably with less teams involved) be better than in DGW37, when there would conceivably be less teams with anything to play for, thus raising the possibility of more rotation?

          • AA33

Do the managers heavily rotate their starting XI towards the end of season, like for Chelsea who could secure the title before DGW 37, and mid-table teams who will have nothing to play for? If so then DGW 37 may not be as fruitful as earlier thought.

Which is the best strategy when it comes to GKs, if playing WC in the next few GWs?
              A. Get a premium GK in the hope of taking advantage of fixtures and/or DGWs (Lloris, DDG, Cech, etc.).
              B. Keep the funds for rest of the team and play Pickford/Jaku for the rest of the season.

Should we be holding some money in the bank also?

                - Is Davies a worthy alternative to Walker? (still no news on Rose)

Does Kane's injury along with Ibra's suspension really mean that - for the short term at least - 3-5-2 is back on the table as the most viable formation?

It felt that just weeks ago we were back to 3-4-3, especially with Gabbiadini's explosive start; but with a lack of premium forwards up and about with good fixtures; it feels a kneejerk move to go 3-5-2 but one that would likely pay off short/mid term.

The Son differential. Marked as Mid I cannot see Janssen getting Kane's place. At 6.8 and getting the forward role in such a side must make him the absolute choice going forward until Kane returns. Is it worth doubling up on Spurs Mids though?

1)Eriksen/Alli or So?If we have one of them should we double up especially with Kane's absence?Otherwise who is the next choice?Sanchez/Hazard or someone else?

2)Mane/Coutinho or Firmino? If we have two of them should we sell one and get one of the above?

3)With Kane,Ibra out and Kun not productive and only a few other forwards as a third choice(Defoe,Deeney,Gabia) should our system remain 3-5-2 or we should change to 3-4-3?

Is it harder to win at FPL if you live outside of the UK?

Surely someone can analyse the winners of the past few seasons and split them by location. I've certainly found it harder now I live in Sydney compared to when I lived in the UK:

                - I don't get to watch as many live games anymore because of the time difference
                - The catch up highlights show here isn't a patch on MOTD
                - Football isn't part of the mainstream Australian sporting culture
                - I don't get up-to-date team news for UK evening games unless I'm awake at 4am!

Maybe those of us who play and live in Australia should get a positive points handicap 😉

205 out of the first 565 (rank hint there 🙂 ) overall are from England - so throw in our Celtic neighbours probably 50/50 overseas split amongst leading players?

34000 people transferred Harry Kane into their teams this week before his match and subsequent injury in the cup against Millwall. Was this a case of bad luck or a case of bad FPL management?

Ok.. 11 games to be refixed. Here is how I 'think' it might go:

                      Postponed GW26 games:
Sou v Arsenal - The 'Wildcard'. There is not a free spot in either GW34 or 37 for this, so will be the 'rogue' fixture. Likely DGW for both when played.
                      Man C v Man U - Banker for GW37. Double for both.

                      Postponed GW28 games:
Mid v Sun - potentially GW37, but I'm not sure the police would want a midweek relegation decider, so I think this goes to GW34 (saturday). Bournemouth v Mid would be moved to midweek. Both teams would have a double (Sun would play Arsenal..see below)
                      Chelsea v Watford - GW34.
Palace V Spurs - Banker GW37. Doubles for both teams
Sou v Man U- Midweek GW34. Double for Man U (bur, sou) but single for Sou.
                      Arsenal v Leicester - Banker GW37

                      Postponed GW34 games:
Arsenal v Sunderland - moved to midweek GW34. Single for Arsenal, double for Sunderland
Man City v WBA - Moved to midweek GW34. Singles for both
Spurs v Leicester - Moved to midweek GW34. Singles for both
Chelsea v Southampton - Moved to midweek GW37 (to allow Sou & Man U to 'catch up' one of their games in GW34 - they both need the two slots for refixed games). Both teams have doubles.

                      Summary:
GW34 doubles - Man U, Middlesborough, Sunderland, Watford
GW37 doubles - Man U, Man C, Arsenal, Leicester, Chelsea, Southampton, Palace, Spurs
Coud be anywhere! - Southampton v Arsenal DGW

Too much assumption. The number of games involved is correct but it's all downhill from there.

Soton v Arsenal is probably GW35 or GW36.

City v United is not a "banker" for GW37, it could equally be GW34 and there are rumours that it will be.

There could be as little as one team with a GW34 double. The four you mention is the maximum.

Basically the whole thing is erroneous and/or based on assumptions that may or may not be met.

I think Sky would certainly want the Manc derby GW34 while it is definitely going to be relevant, which it may not be in GW37.

Yep. I'm just hoping that either Watford or Boro (or both) do get a DGW34. That would suit me better than the huge DGW37.

"Coud be anywhere! - Southampton v Arsenal DGW"

If avoiding a clash with EL/CL - perhaps Bank Holiday Monday (Gw35) ?

I think I read about Palace having a DGW 34 and not Sunderland. Will just wait for official confirmation at this point.

Judging by Janssen, I don't think Poch hs a choice.

I do, but i kinda want to keep 2 transferres for the break. And LFC defence could very well be hammered by an in form sterling.

Missing Spurs cover tho. Alli is definetly coming in, but havent decided for whom, 6.2 ITB

Anyways, two FTs for the break could be gold.

Not sure. Very few players would (be able to) play all 3 games. It would be quite hard to choose.

There really isn't any point in wildcarding as late as GW36. Ruth pointed it out. It destroys the strategic benefit of it.

                                Chelsea Website:

"The Premier League have announced that a new date for our home match against Watford, postponed due to our progress in the FA Cup, will not be announced until the outcome of the FA Cup sixth round, the subsequent draw for the semi-finals and, if required, progression of Premier League clubs to the Europa League quarter-finals is known. The rescheduled date for Chelsea versus Watford at Stamford Bridge is likely to be confirmed on or around Monday 27 March."

That suggests we may have details of the re-scheduled games and the DGWs that will result somewhere before the GW30 deadline.

Depend on the DGW's, if Southampton play Arsenal on a CL night I might WC for that, with the later DGW's also in mind.

If they all have poor DGWs in GW37 while some other of the big teams have good DGWs, I'd want to WC GW36 to get rid of their players.

If they have good DGWs in GW37, I'd probably WC GW34 and keep their players through both doubles - would also mean I could just concentrate solely on players with good fixtures up to GW33 in the meantime .

that's my thinking as well, but it all depends on the GW34 DGW fixtures and which CL night Arsenal and Southampton play on.

I've seen a lot of people stating during the International Break in GW30, but I've got my fingers crossed for later this GW.

I sat down to do some planning today but it's impossible.

It would be great if Watford had the DGW in 34 but something tells me that won't happen. 🙁

One of the few times I genuinely think a -8 is worth it, see what you think:

                      Kane > Gabbadiani
                      Brunt > Valencia
                      Sterling > Sanchez

Leaves me with a team of:

                      Cech (Jaku)
                      Baines Alonso Valencia (Yoshida, Nyom)
                      Sanchez, Mane, Siggy, King (Carroll)
                      Aguero, Lukaku, Gabbiadiani

Sets me up better for the forthcoming 3 fixtures at the very least, I think

My team in similar and I was thinking a -8 too bringing in Sanchez, Costa and Valencia. Only thing worrying me is the international break. I'm almost more inclined to save the trade as there is risk of injury to Valencia and Sanchez in the break.

A bit off topic here, but, name the one player you think would be a great fantasy football asset that isn't currently playing in the premier league. (Try not to say Ronaldo or Messi, because we all know they would be fantastic).

Considering position and price for me it would have to be David Alaba or Jordi Alba. Both great defenders that offer so much going forward and would probably only be priced between 6.5-7. Bargain!

Everton's have 3 great home games in their next five though (Hull, Burnley, and Leicester), and are performing superbly at home. I can't see many Swansea clean sheets, and relying on attacking returns from defenders is a risky tactic.

Gabbi over Defoe saves you a transfer later, and gives more money now to improve the others. Although Defoe at home to Burnley looks much better than Gab away this week.

I'm in no rush to sell PVA (bought for 5.0) and I'll probably wait for the pressers to find out if Firmino, Olsson and Llorente are fit to feature this weekend. Buying back Sánchez is on my mind, I just haven't decided yet if I'm gonna do it before or after international break. I think I need one Spurs mid. and def. too. I'll take hits to fix the situation and save WC for DGW.

I'm in a similar boat with less Funds so interested what people suggest. I have cout instead of Firm. Tempted to hold Kun Till next week due to Liverpool's leaky defence.

I would probably do what Head-Ake suggests if I was you. I haven't got the funds to do :- Kun>Costa. Cout > Sanchez.

If you have Eriksen, would you double up with Alli (for Sterling), considering Kane is out and Alli could be the one finishing off some/most of the attacks?
