A single goal from an unlikely source takes Chelsea into the FA Cup semi-finals following a feisty match with Manchester United.

Chelsea 1 Manchester United 0

N’Golo Kante’s fine strike was enough to see off a battling Manchester United who played much of a compelling encounter with ten men.

The Chelsea midfielder, who was set up by Willian, steered home a shot from outside the box after the break.

The goal had an air of inevitability about it – the Blues out-shot their visitors by 20 to four and enjoyed 73% possession – but much of that dominance arose after Ander Herrera was sent off for a second yellow card.

The actual foul that led to the Spaniard’s dismissal was almost nondescript, but he was essentially paying for the sins of a team who had spent the first-half targeting Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard.

Herrera will now miss the next two league matches against Middlesbrough and West Brom – this was his second sending-off of the season – although that will have little Fantasy impact as the midfielder is owned by just 0.7%.

United’s task was always going to be a tough one. Without the suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Jose Mourinho looked like having to cobble together a side shorn of any recognised forward at all until Marcus Rashford, who had been ill, declared himself fit enough to play.

The young England forward acquitted himself well but will rue seeing the one clear chance he had saved by the otherwise under-employed Thibaut Courtois.

Having trialled a back three in the Europa League draw with Rostov, Mourinho was expected to roll out the same formation at Stamford Bridge, only to demonstrate his squad’s flexibility by reverting to a back four.

Phil Jones was again in the starting XI but deployed in a holding midfield role, charged mainly with attempting to diffuse the threat from Hazard. It remains to be seen if Mourinho persists with this ploy: it seems likely that Jones will now revert to a central defensive role.

At 4.7, Jones represents the cheapest of United regular starters in defence, and could capitalise on an immediate schedule that involves Middlesbrough, West Brom, Everton and Sunderland, with the toughest of those matches, Everton, taking place at Old Trafford.

The case for Jones would be strengthened further still if Marcos Rojo is cited for what appeared to be a stamp on Diego Costa, with whom he had a running battle all evening.

Rashford (6.4) also looks good for further starts as Ibrahimovic will miss the next two league matches and Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial are struggling to overcome the injuries that forced them out of last night’s clash. Certainly, for the clashes with Boro and West Brom, Rashford could offer a short-term differential.

For Chelsea, Pedro’s position as an unused sub in last night’s match could raise mild concern for his growing band of 9% FPL owners. The Spaniard is the fourth most transferred in midfielder since last weekend, having provided two goals and a pair of assists in his last three, yet he resorted to bench-warming duties as Willian was preferred on the right of the front three instead. Nonetheless, Pedro will be expected to earn a recall at Stoke City in Gameweek 29.

Indeed, with Victor Moses forced off with a reported calf problem in the latter stages, both Pedro and Willian could be unleashed from the start at the bet365 this weekend if the Nigerian fails to make it; Pedro would be the likely deputy at right wing-back.

The all-Premier League semi-finals – Chelsea v Tottenham and Man City v Arsenal – will take place over the weekend of April 22 and 23 during Gameweek 34.

Man City could be in Champions League quarter-final action leading up to that weekend, but there looks to be scope for the Gameweek fixtures involving all four teams to be moved to the midweek after the FA Cup semi-finals.

Chelsea are due to entertain Southampton, Spurs are at Leicester, Arsenal are home to Sunderland and Man City host West Brom.

Chelsea XI: Courtois, Azpilicueta, Luiz, Cahill, Moses (Zouma 89), Kante, Matic, Alonso, Willian (Fabregas 81), Costa (Batshuayi 90+4), Hazard.
Subs not used: Begovic, Pedro, Terry, Chalobah.

Man United XI: de Gea, Jones, Smalling, Rojo, Valencia, Ander Herrera, Pogba, Darmian, Mkhitaryan (Fellaini 37), Rashford, Young (Lingard 81).
Subs not used: Romero, Bailly, Mata, Carrick, Blind.

Yes no doubt he will have been creating chances. He didn't have a clinical striker to finish them off though did he.

I'm considering bringing him IN, actually. I'm a fan of Eriksen and we've seen him perform well in the run in for previous seasons. Natural athlete so he tended to get a lot of goals/assists in the last few mins against more tired legs.

Five points ahead in my ML for manager of the month prize. Should I take a hit to bring in Sanchez for capoue meaning ibra to Barnes and play barnes v s'land? -4

Or take a -8 to get King over Frazer (whom I have) play king and bench Barnes.??

Or no hits and go without Sanchez.

Most my rivals don't have him at this point but v possible they will by kickoff.

Waiting for DGW announcements. A lot of talk about the GW36 WC and GW37 bench boost, but I don't see much value in it. GW31 looks an option with Arsenal's upturn in fixtures and Zlatan returning from suspension.

Yeah I'm thinking an earlier wildcard has more benefit. Anything from GW30 onwards (as long as the doubles are announced) seems best. As you say GW31 may be a good time.

      Both.

I was intent on using my WC but have just decided to take a -8 and get a similar team (apart from my enablers) to what my wildcard would have given me so I can wait an know exactly what fixtures for the doubles are and when.

Similar predicament to most here this week I'd imagine, but:

    A) Kun and Eriksen
    B) Costa and Sanchez (-4)

I know B seems like the much better option just can't decide whether it's worth a -4 this week, especially when I still have my WC and could use it next week if we find out more about the DGW's.

    So A or B? Thoughts?

I'm probably going to have A. Very strong.

Sanchez I'm not interested in before an international break (lol), and Costa a more long term target, I like Kun vs. a leaky 'Pool defence.

Currently sitting at rank 584 OR, any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.

I like all those moves, so I'd stagger them. Brunt to Walker this week seems the most sensible, and then you can assess the other two. Long term Costa and Alli seems much better than Aguero and Sterling.

I wonder if Alli might be even more advanced, when Son is through the middle.

Very tricky picking between Valencia and Walker, one is a lot cheaper. Worried that Valencia doesn't get much bonus though.

hey guys, would appreciate advice to this team! Made a BIG mistake and got Kane on Saturday night before the injury. Chasing 50pt gaps in all 3 of my mini leagues

No FT, 1.7 M in the bank
    Grant
    Coleman Daniels Walker McCauley
    Antonio Mane Alli Snodgrass
    Defoe Lukaku

    Jaku, Kane, Chambers, Stanislas

    Thanks!!

          Yep to Gabs.
Maybe consider waiting on Sanchez. International break next so there may be an injury scare / minor doubt for GW30. I'm def getting him in 31, though!

If you can stomach the Kane price drop then sure wait to get Gabbi next week, otherwise if you think he will do better than McCauley -4 this week just get him now

    What would you do?

    Current team, OR 28k:

    Heaton - Pickford
Coleman - Funes Mori - McAuley - Robertson - Amat
    Sigurdsson - Alli - Mané - King - Snodgrass
    Kane - Lukaku - Carroll

    A. Mané and Carroll > Costa and Sanchez (-4)
    B. Carroll > Aguero
    C. Snodgrass and Carroll > Sanchez and Gabbiadini (-4)

    My current front line:

    Kaku-Gabbi-Llorente

Is it good strategy to have only one big gun and invest in Sanchez etc on midfield?

Costa, Kun, Ibra (in 2 weeks), Kaku, Vardy all in the mix... but Gabbi/Llorente/Deeney also options.

Depends if another mf emerges (e.g. Hazard starts scoring every game), then maybe 1x big 2x mid/small will be good.

IMO it's better to have kun/costa, so you can downgrade/upgrade to Ibra/kane.

Better two have the two expensive strikers imo. There are 4 standout options there (Kane, Costa, Ibra, Lukaku. Could include Kun too) and they serve as placeholders for eachother really.

    Heaton Pickford
    Alonso Coleman Brunt Pieters Smith
    Eriksen Coutinho Mané Sigurdsson Carroll
    Aguero Lukaku Llorente

Is it worthwhile considering these WC options, or hold off for now? I'm veru keen to get Sanchez, Alli and Walker in - Brunt and Couts out...Less enthusiastic about losing Aguero though...

    A. Jaku Pickford
    Alonso Walker Coleman* Pieters Maguire
    Sanchez Alli* Eriksen Sigurdsson Pedro
    Costa Lukaku Barnes*

    B. Coleman Alli Barnes > Valencia Son Gabbiadini

    Other non-WC thoughts :
    C. Mané > Sanchez
    D. Coutinho Brunt > Alli Walker (-4)
    E. Coutinho Aguero > Sanchez Costa (-4)

    Cheers!

Hey buddy, see you responded to my comment - Coutinho/Brunt out to Alli/Walker will pay for itself.

I'm not using my WC until I have all the info about who's playing, how much they're playing, and when they're playing. Too much of a task to plan your transfers meticulously from now til DGWs, of which 37 seems the biggie.

      1. Legomane
        • 9 Years

that's the risk - i guess it's still possible we could know fixtures by weekend if PL are on top of things. not convinced on the gw36 WC - think an early WC could pay bigger rewards.

We will know about fixtures in full probably towards the end of the month but before GW30 deadline.

On this basis a WC between GW29 and GW30 seems a sensible option

Lol - You seemed to have combined both questions 😀 Don't WC till you hear about the DGW and who all are involved. I would wait on Sanchez till the Intl. break and so I'd for Alli and Valencia(?) for Cout and Brunt but that WC team looks amazing, just like mine :")

it's soooo tempting to WC for sure.. as individual suggests , could have the following for (-4)...lovely but with a large Sanchez shaped hole!

        Heaton Pickford
        Alonso Walker Coleman Pieters Smith
        Eriksen Alli Mané Sigurdsson Carroll
        Aguero Lukaku Llorente

          I think that looks great!

Sanchez has wba (2x international games) MCY in the next 2, I think he's nailed to come in for 31 when the fixtures start to look amazing, but think others need to come in before he does. Wouldn't worry about not having him immediately!

cheers bud - ML rival won't be able to afford Sanchez, or have Kun either, so I reckon I can hold out. Sanchez and Ibra in GW31 (Kun or Mane out for funds) still an option at that point.

    Lukaku, Costa, Gabbi

    Jaku, Carroll, Yoshida, Stephens

Contemplating downgrading someone to strengthen my bench?

Alli to Son, Walcott or Pedro is worth contemplating

I also don't think Sanchez and Lukaku are as essential as everyone else seems to think. A. Carroll is a short-term option, but Defoe, is a great short-and-long-term option until Kane/Ibra are back, or until the DGWs. (I don't expect you to go Lukakuless like me though.)

    Jak
Rose* / Coleman (HUL) / Mawson (bou)
Mane (mci) / Firmino / Siggy (bou) / Antonio (LEI)
Kun (LIV) / Defoe (BUR)* / Llorente (bou)

Grant | Maguire (eve), Snoddy, Brunt

    A) Defoe to Costa (C)
    B) Rose to Cedric/Jones/Valencia/Bellerin/Alonso/Cahill/Walker
    C) Save
    D) Other

Which move if Llorente/Firmino are fit?
    - I'd like to keep Defoe, but Costa is possible (leaving no funds for further upgrades until I downgrade Kun).
    - I'd like to keep Rose since I have cover in def, but minimum 1 more GW out, and more likely 3 or 4, is still a long time to wait.

I've drafted Davies on WC hoping to get at least 3 games out of him. One definetly this weekend, he won't be ready for Burnley I don't think and is likely to make a late cameo appearance before getting back to the full 90mins.

      Keep Defoe, has good fixtures
