Away goals come back to haunt Manchester City, leaving Leicester City as the sole English survivors in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Monaco 3 Manchester City 1 (6-6 on aggregate, Monaco win on away goals)

A Leroy Sane goal wasn’t enough to keep Manchester City in the Champions League on a lop-sided night in Monaco.

Pep Guardiola talked of attacking to defend their two-goal advantage, but then opted to start with Fernandinho ahead of Yaya Toure and watched his team turn in an abject performance that had them 2-0 down at the break.

Kevin De Bruyne was moved deeper in the second half and City improved markedly. Sergio Aguero was handed two great chances but failed to take either before Sane scored from a Raheem Sterling rebound.

Monaco soon netted again and City never recovered on a night when the manager was let down by his players more than his selections.

And, generally, the players have let down their Fantasy managers this season as well.

City’s squad is ageing – 12 regulars are 30 or more – and surprisingly thin, with a cluster of exceptional players, some still developing and then the rest.

Guardiola’s tinkering and a couple of key injuries have rendered the vast majority of his squad as unreliable Fantasy assets.

City have kept three consecutive clean sheets in the league, out of just eight all season, and the only defender in the top 30 for points scored is Aleksandar Kolarov, back in 21st spot.

More surprisingly for such a free-scoring team, they have just two top 30 midfielders – De Bruyne and Sterling – and only John Stones, Sterling and Aguero are owned by more than 10% of managers as a result.

In the absence of Gabriel Jesus, Aguero is the side’s go-to striker and, despite last night’s blank, he still has six goals in his last six across all competitions.

Nonetheless, there’s every likelihood that City’s schedule over the next three Gameweeks – which involves Liverpool at home and trips to Arsenal and Chelsea – would have earned him far more than the 14,000+ transfers out this week, if it hadn’t been for Harry Kane’s injured ankle and a suspension to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Certainly, in terms of league output, Sterling remains the most consistent, with a goal or assist in nine of his last 11 Gameweek appearances. Yet last night’s consolation continued the recent ascent of Sane, who now has six goals and four assists in his last 11 matches across all competitions.

With a (yet-to-be-scheduled) double Gameweek to come, albeit involving the home leg of the Manchester derby, City’s favourable run of fixtures from Gameweek 32 onwards indicates that they will still have a part to play in our plans.

Furthermore, there’s hope that last night’s exit will only lessen the likelihood of rest and rotation, as Guardiola targets a kind run-in to secure a top two finish, at least.

Pep’s men also still have to host Hull, Crystal Palace, Leicester and West Brom. The Baggies clash – originally scheduled for Gameweek 34 – has been postponed due to their progress to the FA Cup semi-finals but is expected to remain in that Gameweek and be moved to midweek.

With trips to Southampton, Middlesbrough and Watford also on their agenda, City at least have the platform to put last night’s chastening exit behind them and offer FPL managers reason for optimism once the testing next three Gameweeks have passed.

Man City XI: Caballero, Sagna, Stones, Kolarov, Clichy (Iheanacho 84), Fernandinho, Sterling, Silva, De Bruyne, Sane, Aguero.
Subs not used: Bravo, Zabaleta, Otamendi, Delph, Toure, Navas.

I've kept Jonty's "ditchables" (for now) and I'm heading in to gw 29 with this lot.

    Hennessey
    Brunt Baines Alonso
    Coutinho Sterling Firmino King
    Kun Vardy Lukaku (C)

    2.2 ITB / 0 FT

G2G or would you advise me to take a hit?

No hit needed. Not a fan of the double Liverpool long term but they're fine for this weekend. I expect goals in that game.

Cheers. Same here, expecting and hoping for goals. Will be easy to take a couple of rage hits if it ends in a goalless draw.

Nothing quite like a rage hit. I'd look at Brunt out next week, but again, not pressing. Valencia would be a lovely replacement and give you three bankable defenders (if Baines is fit)

Yeah, Valencia is on my shopping list. WBAs fixtures are horrendous and they look really bad so Brunt is definitely out soon.

I guess more urgent to lose Llorente more urgent since doubt he will play. Coutinho has tougher match though...

I'm keeping Coutinho as he has a good record vs City but I think you should get Sanchez if you are able to without taking a hit.

Been too depressed to post about the Boro for awhile, but wanted to address a couple of people questioning loyalty of the chairman, etc.

The sacking of Karanka has definitely not been taken lightly and in many respects Gibson's hand has been forced by Karanka's stubborness, refusal to take responsibilty for anything and his aggressive attitude.

A fight broke out on the training ground this morning, the fourth in two weeks. Fallouts with Negredo, Leadbitter and Downing and publicly slating the lack of success in January's transfer window (his point was right, but his tone was overly aggresive) and then inexplicably calling the fans out for asking a team that's scored 3 in 11 to attack, got everybodys back up.

Performances were getting worse and any progress was visibily disapearing with each minute. He'd lost the fans and it was becoming clear that he'd lost the players. His stubborness over playing 3 holding midfielders when it clearly wasn't working, sums him up I'm afraid.

Thanks for everything Aitor, but you won't be missed.

      Thanks for the update!

How do you see things playing out now?

You probably aren't in the mood to discuss FPL but just in case.....for those of us looking at getting in defensive or attacking assets because they're playing Boro do you think it may be worth re-considering?

I'd wait and see. Depends who comes in of course but the fact is that we need to be more expansive and Karanka's strengths lay in his defensive organisation - so we could quite concievably lose a bit of strength at the back. However it could reignite the likes of Ramirez and Negredo if we re-introduce the number 10 position (something that has to happen) and let Traore off the leash a bit more.

Just a shot on target would be nice.

We have to ditch the three holding midfielders and bring Ramirez back in as a 10, otherwise we have no hope.

Starting to look at my 2nd WC trying to determine when best to play it. I've come up with the following rough team, obviously set up for the DGW and bench boost. The questions are if I did something like this in the next few weeks would I loose out on points due to going for DGW only players? Enough to make me wait until closer to the final big DGW? Which non DGW player would hurt me most?

There could be a few players I could keep until closer to the DGW, but I feel this team could hold its own, but is it that much better than my current team to warrant doing it early?

    Valdes - Pickford

    Valencia - Rose - Alonso - Yoshida - Fabio

    Sanchez - Hazard - Alli - Zaha - Capoue

    Costa - Ibrahimovic - Gabbiadini

Bare in mind I've yet to make a transfer(s), thinking of Meyler to Alli?

        Jaku - Pickford

        Alonso - Coleman - Brunt - Amat - Nyom

        Coutinho - Mane - Antonio - Siggy - Meyler

        Costa - Lukaku - Carroll

I'm tempted to go in the next 2 GW's, but don't want to go too early and end up taking big hits to sort out later problems. Brunt to Walker or Valencia could sort out my defence in one go, Amat and Nyom are bench fodder anyway.

    2. Haggis
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

Your defense is spot on I think.

Wouldn't double up on Haz/Costa, should CHE seal the title, they will probably start to rotate heavily.

Lukaku in the form of his life deserves a place IMO. And would't lose Siggy while he's a focal point with consistent returns.

I like Eriksen more than Alli personally, but that could probably be a coin flip.

        • 11 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

Agreed could save transferring out Lukaku and Siggy until closer to the DGW, but the structure could still do well in the upcoming fixtures rather than the week before. I don't want to kill my team just for the DGW thats my main worry particularly if I was to do it early.

So, I'm agonizingly 0.1 short from Phillips to Sanchez (Last night's price drop didn't affect me, so I'm not 'a day late'). But now, it seems I need to take a hit.

    How's this for a plan:
    Now: Phillips + Brunt > Sanchez + Yoshida -4
Next week: Llorente + Baines > Valencia + Gabbiadini -4

    My team:
    Heaton – Pickford
    Alonso – Brunt – Baines – Pieters - Amat
    Siggy – Mane – Eriksen – Phillips – Fletcher
    Llorente – Kun – Lukaku

That is a lovely team. Very close to the one I'm aiming for by next gameweek.

I'd stick. Chelsea defender would be nice, but not as enthused this week about them - move Coleman to one of them when you can in the next few weeks.

      Your defense sucks tbh.

      1) Son to Alli
      2) Haz to Pedro
      3) Evans to Valencia
      4) Ward to Coleman/Williams
      5) Davies to Kingsley

Alli will suffer without Kane imo & Son will play up front. Ben Davies a 4.7m defender for Spurs is good for while Rose is injured no?

Should I use my WC or take a -4 this week if needed?

    Heaton
    Luiz / Brunt / Coleman
    Mane / Phillips / Firmino / Siggy
    Costa / Llorente / Lukaku

    Bench: Jaku, Barry, Love, Yoshida.

Nervous about having Mané Cout and Aguero for that MCI-LIV match..

    A. Mané > Sanchez
    B. Coutinho > Allí
    C. Brunt > Walker or Valencia
    D. B+C (-4)
    E. Coutinho Aguero > Sanchez Costa (-4)
    F. Save transfer for Intl. break

Exact same dilemma, and all options seems to be valid.

I'm usually positive towards taking hits, but there's a good chance of WCing next GW, so a -4 now makes less sense.

Actually quite keen on keeping the Liv double up, think we'll see some goals there. However, Sanchez being a popular captaincy pick scares me perhaps even more than losing Mané. Wouldn't want the pool players long term anyways, without DGWs, and Sadio's away form is inconsistent.

So I'm kinda leaning for A) since it saves some cash, covers against a popular captaincy pick and you'll be ahead of what will ultimately be a popular transfer from GW31 on.

    Hello guys

    Thinking of WC.
Current team on -4 already as I did Kane for Ibra early(...) so did Costa for Kane a couple of days ago.

    Heaton - Grant
Baines - Funes Mori - Brunt - McAuley - Olsson
    Mane - Eriksen - Antonio - Sigurdsson - T Carroll
    Kun - Costa - Lukaku

    Potential WC

    Jaku - Pickford
    Walker - Valencia - Jones - Yoshida - Stephens
    Sanchez - Hazard - Eriksen - Son - Antonio
    Kun - Lukaku - Barnes

    Any thoughts?

Slightly off topic question with the gameweek coming up. Which is your favorite club and is there any story behind supporting them. Ex: The first time you watched them play, you were blown away etc. If you are too busy with the gameweek planning, it's alright. But do try your best to answer it.

Looking at all of the permutations, there are a lot of difficulties in GW34 with teams like Bournemouth not wanting to postpone a Saturday game at home to the midweek, just so Middlesbrough and Sunderland can play on the weekend instead (and they would be within their rights to stick to this). Then there are a whole series of knock-on events coming from the "simplest" solution where most of the GW34 games would go into the midweek if possible but the FA would need to make sure Man United, Man City, Southampton and Arsenal would fit their games in as a priority as they have more games than other teams to come up. As a knock on, I can only see the following fixture list happening (thanks Stem for your original formatting):

All postponed GW 34 fixtures would take place in midweek except for MCI vs WBA, but there would be MCI vs MUN instead.

    GW34 Doublers
    Man United (bur, mci)

    GW34 Blank
    West Brom

    GW32, 33, 35 or 36 Doublers (probably 35 or 36 due to Monday Night Football for 32 and 33)
    Arsenal (tot/MUN, sot)
    Southampton (HUL/mid, ARS)

    GW37 Doublers
    Arsenal (sto, LEI)
    Chelsea (wba, WAT)
    Leicester (mci, ars)
    Man City (LEI, WBA)
    Man United (tot, sot)
    Middlesbrough (SOT, SUN)
    Palace (HUL, TOT)
    Southampton (mid, MUN)
    Spurs (MUN, cpl)
    Sunderland (SWA, mid)
    Watford (eve, che)
    West Brom (CHE, mci)

    1. I think I had very similar when I tried to do this sort of thing the other day (though I had one of your GW37 games in GW34 - can't remember which one), but it is definitely all guesswork whichever way you look at it at this stage - I am waiting for official confirmation for sure 🙂

Probably if BOU vs mid went to midweek then you could also fit in MID vs sun in GW34. However, why would Bournemouth want to postpone their Saturday home game?

        1. Hmmm - it wasn't based on a game from the GW34 weekend being needlessly postponed - I can't remember what it was and why though, and I didn't save what I did. Not that it really matters anyway of course, but it is bugging me 🙂

Well I would go Ibra, Mkhitarian and one defencer/keeper with secure gametime (I know). The fact they would play City as part of the double means attacking points are still on the cards and we've all seen how unpredictable defensive points have been in doubles (e.g. MCI vs sto). I think the key to winning the lottery is that you at least have to buy a ticket.

Mkhitaryan seems to start most games and has goals in him and it's that potential I'd be looking for in a DGW. Pogba would be fine in my book and Mata a gamble but worth monitoring too.
