A defensive display of some merit is undone by a refereeing decision of rather less quality as the first leg of Leicester City’s Champions League quarter-final ends in narrow defeat.

Here’s how the action in Madrid played out.

Atletico Madrid 1 Leicester City 0

An Antoine Griezmann penalty made it advantage Atletico in their quarter-final with the Foxes.

The goal was reward for the home team’s dominance even if the penalty, awarded for a foul on the Frenchman by Marc Albrighton, should never have been given – replays showed that the offence took place outside the Leicester box.

The visitors came to defend and did so impressively, generally reducing Madrid to pots at goal from long distance. But the Foxes rarely strung more than a few passes together all night and of the five shots they managed, none of them were on target.

Atletico only worked Leicester keeper Kasper Schemichel sporadically themselves, perhaps unsurprisingly as the match involved two teams who excel on the counter-attack.

Foxes boss Craig Shakespeare named his strongest available XI after ringing the changes in the weekend loss at Everton, with Danny Simpson and Christian Fuchs returning at full-back, Wilfred Ndidi and Riyad Mahrez back in midfield and Shinji Okazaki supporting Jamie Vardy up front.

Yohan Benalouane, who had a fine match, continued to fill in for the injured Wes Morgan, the skipper travelling with the squad as he continues to recover from a back injury.

Fellow centre-half Robert Huth will be suspended for the second leg of the tie on Tuesday after picking up a yellow card in Madrid, which will please his 1.9% ownership as Shakespeare will surely now play him in Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace while potentially resting many other key players once again.

The Foxes’ main Fantasy asset, the 16.4%-owned Vardy, performed his usual pacey irritant role well. But he lacked for service with Okazaki relatively close by in the first-half and was completely starved of the stuff once Andy King came on for the Japanese international after the break to shore up a midfield that had been over-run for 45 minutes.

Vardy’s ownership will now have very real concerns on his pitch time at Selhurst Park after the striker was replaced on the hour mark in Sunday’s defeat. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Shakespeare gave Vardy’s replacement from the bench last night, Islam Slimani, a start up front. Indeed, the Algerian was named in the first XI at Goodison and bagged the Foxes’ first goal.

Despite returning five goals and an assist in his last six Gameweeks, Vardy suffered a loss of 13,000+ owners prior to last weekend’s deadline, with more than 33,000 already ushering him to the exit ahead of this weekend.

Other Leicester rotation risks include the 8.6%-owned Riyad Mahrez  – a peripheral figure in Madrid – and the industrious Albrighton (1.4%), who could be rested against Palace, with Demarai Gray the obvious alternative.

The Foxes have now lost back-to-back matches after winning six straight in all competitions when Shakespeare first took the helm.

A trip to the in-form Palace – one of three consecutive away league fixtures up next for the Foxes – suggests that the dip in form could continue while the Champions League remains such a major, if understandable, distraction.

The Foxes had their double Gameweek 37 confirmed with yesterday’s announcement, although an away trip to Manchester City, combined with a King Power Stadium clash against Spurs, are hardly favourable match-ups.

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel, Simpson, Benalouane, Huth, Fuchs, Mahrez, Drinkwater, Ndidi, Albrighton, Okazaki (King 45), Vardy (Slimani 77).
Subs not used: Zieler, Chilwell, King, Amartey, Slimani, Gray, Ulloa.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    When to use the chips

Now we know the remaining double Gameweeks we must now decide when to use our remaining chips.

The consensus is that DGWK 37 is the best time to use bench boost due to the high number of teams playing twice.

But is this the best use of this chip? Will rotation burn those who have saved it, as it did last year? Is the triple captaincy best used here, perhaps? And if so for who?

What of DGWK 36 triple captaincy consensus – for those that didn’t use it on a Man City option back in DGWK 26? With MUN and sou arguably even a central striking Sanchez is not a great option here. Would it be better to use it for a single gameweek, perhaps. In my mini-league one of my rivals triple captained one of Lukaku’s SGWK home hauls to knock my recent Aguero (TC) for six.

And what of the greatest of all the chips - the second wildcard?

For those with TC and BB to play and wanting to use them in a DGWK then GWK 35 looks the best time (as you can’t play two chips in the same Gameweek).

But for those with just one of TC or BB to play is GWK 36 better. With Palace enjoying a good fixture in GWK 35 it certainly seems advisable to hold onto those assets.

    Personally I favour Philman’s approach
    https://twitter.com/FFScout_Jonty/status/852233013593227265

….this looks at the remaining fixtures in nice tidy blocks. Focus on GWKs 33-35 for now, and especially stocking up on DGWK assets. Then wildcard in GWK 36 for the final three games.

But is perhaps the best time to wildcard now and just get good nailed on players. Will those with the likes of Hazard and Coutinho now be laughing at all the careful planning of others as they rack up points from players being neglected by the planners?

I wildcarded in GW29 with the double fixtures in mind. Unless there is a major shift in form (i.e. Alexis!!!) I should be able to tinker my way through without having any hits. I'm BB-ing in GW34 or 37, taking it week by week for now. Already used my TC in GW10.

I wildcarded last weekend. I was making teams for 36/7 but realised I was basically at the last point last week where I could fit my "ideal" team together with the power midfield I wanted (Eriksen, Alli, Hazard, Sanchez, Zaha, plus Kun/Kaku up top for later transitioning to Ibra and maybe Kane) given all the rises that were going to happen. Am stuck at about 100k, not moving up nor down every week, and in ML I am ensconced just outside the cash prizes, too, so I decided I might as well do it to gain myself some momentum

I've always been a planner in terms of FPL anyway, so I'm not too worried about 37. I will be stocking up on DGW assets anyway. Not too interested in DGW 34, where I reckon 4 players will be enough. All about 37. Love that Chelsea and Spurs in particular have DGWs - means their players remain "live" assets til EoS!

Very well written... it is really a 50-50 depending who you have on your team. I have a lot empathy for the last sentence, i.e. people brining in nailed & on fire players like Hazard/couthino.

I have Walker, Valencia, Sterling, Vardy, Sanchez in my team who costed me quite a few points vs. people with Hazard, Yoshida, Davies in their teams. So the question is really whether the points I might still loose in GW 33-35 until WC GW36 will be compensated in GW 36-38... big dilemma!

Chatting to my Brother last night about the fact I may have to look after his team for the last three weeks. He still has an intact WC so I asked him when he plans playing it. "I might not need to play it at all"...

I think if you look at the way it's all panned out, and in particular the order of the DGW's, he has a point.

Palace have a good fixture indeed, but so does Southampton. Could leave a Palace player in your team for 1 more week though if you WC in 35

I have my 2nd WC and Bench boost only left, so for me I'm planning to WC in 36 and BB in 37. As you suggest, splitting it up into 2 blocks is a a great idea, I'll have 2 palace, 2 utd and a boro def for GW 33- 34-35, then can WC.

The big risk for me is over motivation of the teams involved. Theres a pretty big chance I reckon that by 36 Arsenal won't have a chance of top 4, and Southampton already have nothing to play for, let alone by 36, maybe they will be wanting to play some of their young academy prospects? Massive chance of 36 being a damp squib i reckon.

37 is less of an issue i think, although if the title race is over by then then even that could be less fruitful than envisaged.

The way I see it at this stage, the players that appeal to me are:

Arsenal - Sanchez (if Ars back in form, back up front/playing with Giroud).

Southampton - Gabbiadini, JWP, Stevens, Yoshida. (Gabbiadini can score against anyone, JWP and Stevens are young and therefore might play more cos of that)

Leicester - Nothing to play for, expensive and terrible fixtures. No interest here

Manchester City - Great fixtures, but pep is a troll. Possibly Jesus if back (he is his favourite), and Sane (seems to not be rotated as much as sterling). Rest of team are rotation risks.

Manchester Utd - Ibra (golden boot gunning). Rest of team are rotation risks. Nothing to play for at this stage and potential EL final to save players for.

Sunderland - Pickford, because of the endless barrage of shots his team are likely to face. Every other player is dreadful.

Spurs - Kane (plus golden boot motivation), Alli, Erik, Son, Walker, Davies, etc etc. IF they are still going for the title.

Watford and WBA - Bucket and Spade, Sunnies, BBQ.

        Somehow overlooked Chelsea!

Costa, Hazard, Alonso, possibly pedro if money for hazard is an issue. Of course this depends on them not having won the title!

With WC and BB intact, I am just focussing on DGW 34 at the moment.

In GW 35 I will play around with a potential WC team focussing on DGWs 36 and 37, and will just make a decision that week whether I pull the trigger early or not.

    GW33 Stats Preview

Spurs are unbeaten at home picking up 44pts from a possible 48pts
Bournemouth have not won a game away against a Top 10 side picking up 4pts from a possible 27pts

Crystal Palace have won 5 of their last 6 games including all 3 at home
Leicester have picked up only 6pts from a possible 45pts away from home. They also have a CL game to play after this game.

Everton have picked up 37pts from a possible 48pts at home and are unbeaten at home since 1 January 2017.
Burnley have the worst away record in the league picking up only 4pts from a possible 48pts.

Stoke have not lost a game at home against a Bottom 10 side.
Hull have the second worst away record in the league picking up only 5pts from a possible 48pts.

Sunderland have not won in 7 games and have scored no goals in that period.
West Ham have picked up 25pts from a possible 33pts against teams below them this season.

Watford have picked up 22pts from a possible 36pts at home against teams outside the Top 6
Swansea have picked up 10pts from a possible 48pts away. They have not won any of their last 5 games.

Southampton have not won a game against a team in the Top 6 (D2, L5)
Man City have picked up 24pts from a possible 27pts away from home against teams outside the Top 8

West Brom have picked up 5pts from a possible 33pts against teams above them. They also have a poor record since reaching the 40pt mark.
Liverpool have not lost a game against a Top 10 side this season (D6, W9)

Man Utd have lost only one game at home this season, but drawn 9 (most in the PL).
Chelsea are relatively untested against teams in the Top 8 away from home (W1, D1, L2)

Middlesbrough have not won a game against a team in the Top 10 this season (D6, L9)
Arsenal have not won away from home since January losing 4 games and having won only 1 of their last 5. Before the loss to Palace, they were unbeaten against teams in the Bottom 10.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
tl;dr: Spurs, Palace and Everton look nailed on. Stoke, Watford and West Ham should win their games. Arsenal should win, but their form has been poor. Question marks over the rest.

I am wary of both Southampton and Liverpool.

Southampton have only lost 1 of their last 6 and that was a tight game away against Spurs.
West Brom are meant to be on holiday, but they have beaten Arsenal and drawn with Utd since reaching the 40pt mark.

If Man u make top 4 and win Europa league ( never happening btw ) I would say Ibra is my player of the year. Kante has been unbelievable but he is only playing in one competition really. In fact I would go as far as saying that if United do the impossible and win Europa league and finish in top 4 having already won the community shield and league cup. United would have had a more successful season than Chelsea.

      Thoughts ?

so you saying Winning Europa League and qualifying for CL is better than winning PL? lol
Chelsea have by far the best season of any team until Leicester wins CL and that is because that stuff is for dreams

Really struggling here to plan for this week/DGW34. So far I have this:

          Jaku;

          Alonso, PvA, Valencia;

          Sanchez, Alli, Eriksen, King;

          Lukaku, Aguero, Origi

          1FT 1.0ITB // Evans, De Roon, Amat

          --------------

I'm considering Aguero -> Kane, and then next week doing Sanchez + Evans + Origi -> Zaha + Gibson + Ibra (-8) [WC 35/36]

Eww that's a disgraceful choice! If you don't have Hennessey already, maybe Martin Kelly, but you really don't want him stinking up your side. Be tempted to go Holgate tbh if you don't already own, or, failing that, cheapos with 37 dgws (e.g. Cathcart at Watford) but it's not great at that level if you already have Yoshi/Stephens, Holgate and a cheap boro rep

I take Bilic's comment as Carroll was only fit enough vs Swansea to play for 15-20 minutes if needed.

But this week his can play more? (Or less I suppose, but I'll take it positively as I have Carroll in my team!)

Is the team G2G for this week?

            Pickford (Jaku)
            Alonso, Valencia, Holgate (Maguire, Evans)
            Zaha, Alli, Eriksen, Siggy (King)
            Ibra, Kaku, Kane

Thinking next week to get rid of Evans for a Borough defender (looking at the lineup this weekend) then I will leave it at that for the doubles!

4 out of this 5 for DGW37, whose to pick?

Aguero (LEI WBA) - possible rotation with G.Jesus, although for me its very unlikely

Kane (mun LEI) - best Spurs attacker available

Ibra (tot sou) - not the best fixture

Sanchez (stk SUN) - two back to back DGW

Hazard (wba WAT) - maybe rotated if Chelsea already win the league

For me its either Ibra or Hazard, although its long way ahead but its part of planning before the DGW mess

Just had a real look at United's upcoming fixtures and it's madness. I got rid of Valencia anyway because I felt like I'd not always get a lucky 9pter from Yoshi off the bench, but these fixtures are a real cause for concern if anyone is thinking of loading up / placing a lot of hope in United over DGW34 and the kind home fixture with Swansea in 35.

I will be getting Ibra in as a hygiene factor, but that will be about it. Am even tempted to captain Zaha. I can see rotation kicking in heavily, especially for the Burnley game IF United aren't safely through after one leg.

We learnt from Liverpool last year that if a team is chasing UEL leave well enough alone - the DGW assets are just SGWers in disguise, and, to top things off, the SGW is the Manchester derby!

Big caveat is if United sweep Anderlecht aside this evening and qualify after the one leg in all but name. Would hopefully see a weakened team in the follow up and hopefully a lot of the players we "want" starting away vs. Burnley. I still think the Swansea game will see rotation for sure, especially as it is at home.

But there's loads of doubt here so I thought it was worth flagging in case people who didn't play last year or haven't really thought about it and could default to loading up on United as the "big team" with a DGW in 34: caveat emptor.

            Thanks 🙂

Agreed. Only positions where United have no back up atm is Ibra and CBs. Therefore Ibra and Bailly/Rojo should be nailed. Bailly and Ibra for me I think.

Ibra for me mate, though I was tempted by those defenders. If Kane explodes this weekend I might consider dropping Vert for Rojo, but it's so uncertain I'm just like ugh, remember liverpool last yr too, just gna see a procession of 0s lol

Thing is United haven't got any more available CBs than Bailly and Rojo. Think they will play all games. Maybe Rojo gets one rest because he should be more tired after international duties.

Hmm maybe Vert goes for Rojo to afford Kane eventually...
