After four straight defeats on the road, Arsene Wenger rolls back his coaching menu by twenty years and opts for a back three. It does the trick, earning the victory at Middlesbrough, as Alexis Sanchez breaks out of his run of blanks to deliver. Here’s the Stock Check on Monday’s final Gameweek 33 encounter.

On the Rise

Alexis Sanchez
Without a goal or an assist for three Gameweeks, the Chilean was yet to go four Premier League matches without finding the net. His sublime first-half free-kick at the Riverside Stadium ensured that run continued.

Deployed in support of Olivier Giroud in what appeared to be a 3-4-1-2 in the first-half, Sanchez shifted to play a more disciplined left-flank role in the second period. His average position over the match therefore again showed him to be stationed far deeper than when given free reign as the central striker.

In all honesty, along with Arsenal as a whole, Sanchez still struggled to make a big impression – he had two efforts on goal all match – but his moment of brilliance did at least offer a reminder of his qualities and provided a belated return.

Sold by more than 91,000 ahead of Gameweek 33, Sanchez’s ownership sits at a modest 24.8%. That will surely rise ahead of a Gameweek 36 double but, until then, further returns from Sanchez – against Leicester City (home) and Spurs (away) – could have a major bearing on mini-leagues and the Fantasy Premier League top ranks.

Mesut Ozil
For those unable or unwilling to revisit Sanchez’s hefty price tag, Ozil could well be a consideration for Gameweeks 36 and 37.

The German’s well-taken half-volley took him to two goals and two assists from his last four Gameweeks – his most consistent run of the season so far.

Owned by just 5.9%, he would represent a worthy differential for those inclined to take risks over the final furlongs.

Gabriel
Part of Arsenal’s back three on Teesside, he would surely be in line to retain a starting role should Arsene Wenger maintain the formation.

While Laurent Koscielny made his return from injury, birthday boy Shkodran Mustafi missed out with his own thigh problem, paving the way for Rob Holding to earn a rare opportunity.

The 4.0 option may be of interest, but will surely make way for Mustafi’s return.

However, Gabriel offers the ability to switch to a back-four by slotting in a right-back without the need for a substitution. That versatility could keep him a starting berth.

Alvaro Negredo
A second goal in three Gameweeks perhaps offered a glimpse of the potential that the Spaniard could offer over Gameweek 34.

Priced at just 6.2 and up against the Bournemouth and Sunderland defences, Negredo should really offer value. Middlesbrough must be driven to win those matches and Negredo has scored or assisted 57% of their goals when on the pitch this season.

Nonetheless, with Christian Benteke in form as the third striker option and our heavy-hitter slots booked out, Negredo certainly represents a gamble.

In Decline

Victor Valdes
Second only to Manchester United’s David de Gea for transfers in among goalkeepers ahead of Gameweek 34, Boro’s Spanish stopper was a surprise omission from the teamsheet.

It was revealed that Valdes missed out due to a rib injury sustained in training on Sunday and following a knock picked up in the 0-0 draw with Burnley in Gameweek 32.

Steve Agnew confirmed post-match that the keeper was to be assessed, with no real prognosis offered. That immediately puts his double Gameweek credentials in question, promoting Boro’s back four options – and Ben Gibson in particular.

Fabio
Returning to the starting line-up following a two-match absence, the Brazilian’s night was derailed early on when he departed on 16 minutes with what was confirmed post-match as a knee problem.

His withdrawal opened the way for George Friend to make a first appearance since Gameweek 27. Priced at 4.2 and with some attacking promise, Friend would be a Gameweek 34 consideration should Fabio face a spell on the sidelines.

Agnew offered little on the injury other than he believed it was a new problem and confirmed that the full-back was being assessed by the doctors.

Hector Bellerin, Theo Walcott
Perhaps the two major victims of Wenger’s formation swap, both were benched at the Riverside with Bellerin’s involvement limited to a cameo from the bench.

Walcott, who had started the last four outings and six of the last seven, played no part and, on the face of it, will surely struggle to find a role in the XI should Wenger entertain the idea of retaining a three-man defence.

Meanwhile, Bellerin would seem perfectly suited to the right wing-back role but was ousted in favour of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The Englishman was, arguably, Arsenal’s best player on the night.

However, we expect Arsenal to revert to a back four against Manchester City in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final, with perhaps both Bellerin and Walcott restored.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      1) If you had a second triple captain chip, how would you use it?

      2) Now they have no more easy games at home, is triple Spurs too much?

      3) Who will score more points in GW34 - Lukaku or Ibra?

      4) Who are the must-have players for the doubles in 36 and 37?

      5) Is Andy addicted to hits?

      6) Does Lukaku's record away from home now make him dispensable?

      7) Should we replace single GW players with a plum fixture for double GW players with 2 bad fixtures?

      8) Should we avoid Manchester United players like Ibra altogether ... Is there too much uncertainty?

      9) How maverick would it be to bench boost in 34?

With close on a 9k rise this week (32k > 23k) why am I not happy with my performance?
Does past success (704 OR) dilute current ranks with disappointment for other managers too?, especially when I personally believe that this season has been tougher than others.

Should we be considering Sunderland players as an option as their fixtures are 2nd to none. I know they aren't the greatest team but with relegation inevitable maybe Moyes will loosen the shackles on them attacking and it could be a case of a few high scoring 3-4 games

Time to sell Sanchez? Leicester at home next. Sanchez at home not so good:

At home: 6 goals and 5 assists in 15 appearances
Away: 13 goals and 4 assists in 16 appearances

Compare to Ibra who is much better away from home:

At home against teams in the Top 8: 3 goals in 4 games
At home against teams outside the Top 8: 4 goals in 10 games
Away against teams in the Top 8: 3 goals in 4 games
Away against teams outside the Top 8: 8 goals in 9 games

Unless you WC before. Then it's not your "5th" mid, but your joint 1st mid with the other 4. Don't forget the extra keeper too, and the fact you can choose your fixtures. You can choose your fixture for TC any other week (E.g. last week).

      2) With man city's recent 3-0 win can you see them keeping any clean sheets over the next 5 gameweeks?

Is it worth taking a hit for any player from the 3 teams that have DGW this week?

Personally I can't think of any players who's worth a hit if you're transferring out players like Siggy (STK), King (MID) & Lukaku (whu) etc. They might not have a double gameweek but they have decent fixtures and I don't think the replacements available are worth a hit given their fixtures/Circumstances.

In the form they are in, 3 Spurs never feels like overkill. However, you will probably end up selling the wrong one, but Haz would be a good trade. I would sell Alli, but it feels wrong selling to a SGWer in a DGW.

Could Özil be a a good differential to Sánchez? Better form at the moment and significantly cheaper. Since Wenger seems to persist with playing Sánchez on the wing, Özil could continue to thrive in this formation.

With Valdés presumably injured and out for the DGW, Fabio also injured and Boro now REALLY having to win rather than be safety first, are Boro defenders to be avoided? And maybe even Negredo considered for the DGW?

How do we create room for attractive SGW options with great form and fixtures?

Lukaku has amazing form and while he only has 2 home fixtures at home left, he has West Ham and Swansea away.

Pool has hit form so one of Cout/Firmino should tick on during their run in.

Hull is fighting for survival and are really strong at home. Watford and Sunderland at home in the next 3. Their main assets look primed for points.

What are the options for the post DGW34 wildcard? To play in 36 for those of us without TC and a bench boost still seems the best time to play but seeing some alternative views. I'd like to wait past 35 to get an idea of who still has something to play for.

DGW captains are all about hitting double bonus right?

So Negredo captain, goal in each game, full bonus = 36 points.

Learning the lessons of (FPL) history.

Remembering what a minefield for rest and rotation Liverpool were last year as they entered the latter stages of the UEL despite double game weeks in the Prem, has this made any of the scouts less keen on United assets?

For example, I've chosen to go Tekkers over Ibra as I can't see Ibra playing 4 games in 10 days. Thinking of a CB in Rojo or Bailly depending on their UEL game, but that might be it...

Question - Which chips and when?

I have WC, AOA, BB and TC all available... I'm thinking of TC either GW34 or GW36, WC GW35 to setup team for GW 36 & GW37 where I can use TC and AOA (If I've not sued TC in 34...Unsure what order at the moment).

Question 2 - Harry Kane vs DGW players? Dare I not go with Kane this week and transfer in DWGers instead (I currently only have Ibra as a DGWer)?

I have Lukaku and Ibra upfront and Alli, Erkisen and Davies from Spurs. To get Kane in I need to triple sub (-8) removing Sanchez, Davies and Anichebe for Townsend, Kane and Barragan. Otherwise I could do Jakupovic, Davies and Sigurdsson for de Gea, Valencia and Zaha.

With Spurs fixtures getting more difficult, are we still all banking on Kane? Already having Alli and Erisen I think this may be too much on Spurs players.

WC this DGW, load up with 9 x DGW players and rest of squad with GW 36+37 players, then use FT's and coupla hits to dispose of Palace and Boro players ahead of GW 37? This way you can maximise all 3 DGW's......

Are we mad to go with Ibra considering he may be rotated this week with Utd's heavy fixture list. I am in my 9th year doing this and somethign is telling me not to do it is this my wisdom coming through from experience of this before or is it my fear of missing out. It's hard to differentiate fromt he two in this game/I have 2 FT this week and I was just going to get Gibson and PVA in then hit my WC for bench boost in GW37.

Some premiership managers give very little away about player injuries/availability in the pre match press conference.
In your opinion which give little away and which are more open ?
Should we be more selective if waiting for a particular manager's press conference before making a transfer in/out of one of their player's ?

Is the DGW Bench Boost a fallacy ? A rotated and potentially weak bench limited to one random gameweek that may not even favour the BB.

Surely the time to BB is when your players at at home and/or against weak opposition, which will naturally occur sometime during the season.

Even with a WC you have to arrange the bench at the expense of the main 11.

Fairly smooth week thanks to drafting in Captain Kane. Key as the mini league boost it gave me with two rivals triple captaining Lukaku. I got six over them on that move and also nine pts over them on my Aguero GWK 26 TC.

Sanchez goal was good and part of lots of six or so point players.

Technically you only got 3pts on them for your tc.

You got an extra 9 for your tc and they got an extra 6 for their tc. It is not really that big a game changer of a chip unless one party puts it on a gangbuster that gets 20+ pts and the other party a) doesnt have that player capt (if they do you still only make 20pts) and b) doesn't get anything from his own tc (whatever they get comes off the 20pts you made on your tc).

It's a scary chip as there is still the chance of an unlikely event like a player you don't own getting 20+ and your opposition tc them and you blanking with your tc.

Technically it doesn't matter where tc is concerned as you got 9 for your tc bonus (extra over normal captain) and they got 6 so you are only gaining 3pts with the chip. As I say it is not that big a chip really unless you hit a mega load and your rival hits nothing.

      Smoothish week, 51 overall.

Smooth; Lukaku(c), Toby, Firmino my season keeper doing the biz again, Alli, Carroll all returning.

Rough; Alonso injury with Maguire 3rd sub Mawson 2nd sub! Ibra 0 pointer but at least I didn't captain him like my mini-league leader.

Resisted transferring Kane in for Ibra myself. It didn't make sense but perhaps should have done it. Two FT's for this week now though and sixth green arrow on the bounce.

TC Kane, B. Davies repaid the hit from Rose and Firmino's double figure. Best GR of the season, 5k, and finally back inside the top 1M for the first time since GW17.

Benched Maguire in favour of Mawson though. And still not bettered my OR from GW1, 890k.

Rough: I didn't like 3 of my defenders' fixtures (Valencia, Evans and Gibson), so I played All Out Attack to start Zaha and had Valencia as 1st sub. A Zaha blank and a Valencia clean sheet meant that AoA cost me 4 points.

Smooth: -4 points for the AoA chip is at least an improvement on the negative 6 points it netted me last season.

Even if they bring back that useless chip, I'm never playing it again.

Rough; The right foot of David Silva when he was about to make me 6 points (Aguero C). When you realized Aldeirwereld wasn´t deflecting the ball from that Eriksen corner. The time you watched Mawson loosing the ball and gave away a silly goal.
Smooth; the relief of Sanchez. When you realized, despite a pretty disappointing week points-wise, you´d actually closed the gap with 7 points to you mini legue leader, so now trailing 8 points behind an still making him do bad transfers in the process.

dropped Walker/Sanchez/LLorente if I'd not done this I'd have captained Lukaku. these 4 would of got me 27 points.
      Bailly/Zaha/Kane (c) and Lukaku got me 38.

Forget Brighton... Plymouth won 6-1 to secure promotion to League 1 after a disastrous decade involving administration, dropping two leagues, and losing all their best players. Hopefully the Championship won't be long off.

The Green Army is coming back.

Posted something about this yesterday, but if United get through in Europa their fixture list is INSANE, reads

    thu 20 ANDERLECHT
    sun 23 bur
    thur 27 mci
    sun 30 SWA
    thu 4th semi1
    sun 7th ars
    thu 11th semi2
    sun 14th tot
    wed 17th sou
    sun 21st CPL

add on the final of Europa potentially on the 24th.

That's potentially 11 games in 35 days, by my maths nearly a game every 3 days and including away days at Spurs, Arsenal and City!

why is that funny? he literally just got benched - jose's priorities are ALL on EL

Consider this though, that win against Chelsea changes alot. Now Jose feels he can get into top four if he wins out?

True, I think the same. But Ibra's still not 100% nailed on.

That's my point! If his priorities change (and it could given that win) then there's a greater probability of getting top four now than winning EL imo. So Ibra now nailed on more than ever.

They're behind Liverpool and have Spurs, Arsenal & City to play against still. And Europa games to juggle at same time.

Liverpool have easier games vs teams with not much to play for

don't think anything changes in Jose's mind, EL still by far easiest route to CL

Sticking to my guns re Ibra, not worth a hit imo, especially with United's congested fixture list. Plus the only route to him is Sanchez or kane out, i wouldn't want to do the latter and I've used my wildcard so wouldn't want to do the former either. Whether or not that was the right call time will tell.

    1. Sp0rting

      I have him anyway.

Wouldn't get him for a hit though.

Ya with no WC a hit in and a transfer out which is probably also for a hit is definetly not worth it. That's -8 pts I have better plans for and it's very likely Kane will outscore Ibra in any case. Kane to Ibra is madness imo. Look at people who did Kane to Aguerro in 27 and that was far more justifiable.

And using my FT on McAuley > Boro defender (Friend or Gibson) is the right move with the below isn't it?

    Pickford / Foster
    Yoshida / Valencia / Walker / McAuley / Amat
    Eriksen / Pedro / Zaha / Siggy / Capoue
