We take a break from the current double Gameweek to look ahead to the key captaincy candidates for the next set of fixtures this weekend.

Already one double Gameweek star, Christian Benteke (7.3), has put up a good case for a place at the summit of our latest poll after scoring a brace against his former club Liverpool on Sunday.

The Palace striker has now scored five in as many starts and on Saturday evening takes on Burnley, one of the Premier League’s most porous away day defences that has shipped 33 goals on the road.

With one game still to go in Gameweek 34, against Spurs on Wednesday, the Belgian’s team-mate Wilfried Zaha (6.0) still has the opportunity to court votes to offer an alternative option among the Eagles’ ranks and make up for his blank at Anfield.

Marcus Rashford (6.6) was another sought-after double Gameweek asset who has so far failed to impress after being benched for Manchester United’s trip to Burnley yesterday.

Once he gets a tricky midweek game with rivals Manchester City out of the way, he looks primed for interest for Gameweek 35 given that he collides with a Swansea City defence at Old Trafford that is one of only four sides to have a worse defensive away record than Burnley. The Swans have shipped 35 goals and have kept just a solitary clean sheet on their travels.

The North London derby, at White Hart Lane on Sunday, is also likely to put forward a raft of candidates, with both sides on a fine run of scoring form.

Arsenal have won both their matches since switching to a wing-back system against Middlesbrough in the league and Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final. That is likely to renew interest in Alexis Sanchez (11.5). In the new system, the Chilean appears to have the freedom to wander back into central areas and has scored in both matches. Mesut Ozil (9.4) has also prospered, with the 6.1%-owned German scoring the Gunners’ second goal against Boro last Monday.

Spurs may have lost 4-2 against Chelsea in the other FA Cup semi-final this weekend, but their trio of chief captaincy candidates, Harry Kane (11.6), Dele Alli (9.2) and Christian Eriksen (8.8), were all involved in their side’s goals to ensure they attract interest.

With the Gunners conceding six goals in their last four, compared to one by Spurs over the same period, Kane, in particular, is expected to prosper. The England striker, who is the most popular acquisition so far this week in FPL’s transfer market, has scored six and assisted a further two goals over his last four league run-outs.

Manchester City’s assets are also expected to garner votes as they travel to a Boro side that was humiliated 4-0 away to Bournemouth at the weekend.

Sergio Aguero (12.8), who scored in City’s FA Cup defeat is his side’s top scorer on the road, with 12 goals, could lead the charge among Pep Guardiola’s troops in our latest poll. However, after picking up a potential fitness concern against Arsenal in yesterday’s FA Cup semi-final, voters may wait to see if he is fit to start in the Manchester derby.

Gabriel Jesus (8.6), the Argentine’s rival for a central striker berth, is back in training and could attract a flurry of votes later in the week should he gain minutes in the derby at the Etihad. His 0.5% ownership also looks set to rocket should he deliver attacking returns from this tricky encounter.

Liverpool’s Brazilian pair of Roberto Firmino (8.7) and Philippe Coutinho (8.5), who between them have scored seven times and racked up five assists over their last nine run-outs, have also been added to the poll ahead of the Reds’ trip to Watford.

Following their 2-1 defeat to Palace at the weekend, a win is vital for Jurgen Klopp’s troops if they are to cling on to their top-four place. The Hornets’ shipping of 23 goals in their 17 home league matches offers hope to those backing the Liverpool duo.

At Goodison Park, Romelu Lukaku (10.5) is usually a shoo-in for top billing in our captaincy poll, given that he has scored 16 goals on home turf – more than any other player.

A visit from title favourites Chelsea might curtail support, although the Blues’ failure to keep a clean sheet since Gameweek 22 should ensure that the Belgian remains a strong option. His position as FPL’s most popular player, with a 46.7% ownership, should also keep him high on our latest list.

Southampton players are among this week’s enticing differential captaincy picks and in particular fit-again striker Manolo Gabbiadini (6.4), who has seen his ownership dwindle to 3.4% following an injury lay-off that halted a scoring run of four goals in as many matches. With penalties in his locker, the 1.9%-owned midfielder Dusan Tadic (6.9) is another that could earn votes as we scout out the Serbian ahead of the Saints’ two double Gameweeks.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 35 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article, offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Now that Sanchez has been shifted to the wing...

Could Giroud be the 3rd alternative striker for the upcoming 2 DGW's??

Have Kane & Lukaku & a crocked Ibra, but unconvinced about Gabby...

    front 8 of

Sanchez, Alli, King, Zaha (de roon)

    Ibra, Kane, Lukaku.

    1,8 ITB..

My inital plan was Ibra- Gabby, Zaha - Hazard

I mean now that welbeck is fit, will giroud play every game?

I think its doubtful and that alone would put me off getting him for the doubles

Not nailed enough, especially in a DGW. That initial plan looks decent tbh. Maybe consider Jesus instead of Gabbi

Rashford will be a nightmare to own, He will be rested before Euro games, and with MU fixture pile up... not ideal -IMO

What change to make this week folks? Wildcarding next week so may as well use it (or do FTs get carried on a wildcard?)

    Jaku (Grant)
    Alonso, Bailly, Stephens (Brunt, Bernardo)
    Sanchez, Alli, Coutinho, King (Carroll)
    Lukaku, Kane, Rashford (c)

Rashford might not start v Swansea..

He would prob start against City,
      then rotate with Rooney ..

Man U playing every 3-4 days- a risk to own -IMO

Good point, perhaps I should be considering swapping him for a different striker this week. Any suggestions? Not a huge fan of Benteke but I guess he does have the form and fixture?

Not looking forward to wildcarding - will ultimately go for the DGW players but they're not that inspiring - especially up front.

Might have to stick more than expected single GW players in

especially with all the expensive players you will end up wanting on the WC like Haz/Sanchez/Alli/Kane we need to find some DGWK cheap options but its a real struggle to find any!

Nothing wrong with SGW players on a BB. Lukaku (WAT) will outscore most DGW forwards.

Don't think Lukaku will outscore Kane or Jesus in the dgw.

Gabbi may be yes. But the cash saved gives you superior dgw mids and defs.

Worth it to go for 15 dgwers and forget the sgwers imo.

I think I'm holding onto Benteke for the rest of the season. Two tough fixtures on paper after this week, but they have a godd record against big teams and away in particular. Also has a good fixture for BB in DGW37 (HUL).

No, I used mine earlier. I feel he's definitely more appealing than the likes of Gabbi though. In great form. Also nailed, unlike Jesus.

I recall far less positivity previously...

Yeah, though it's quite reasonable to back Jesus to become a viable asset soon given his relationship with Pep compared to Aguero's

On wildcard this week Kane Gabbi & Jesus is all I can think of upfront.
Gabbi has no form but with Hull at home at 2 DGWs I have no other option.
Jesus coming back from injury so let's see if he's in the squad against United.

Spending big in midfiled seems like the right thing.

I agree! Kane Gabbi Jesus the template if Gabbi proves his fitness and form at home to Hull and Jesus gets a starting berth. All up in the air at present. Gabbi has 2 dbgws. Jesus is cheap and also has great fixtures if he starts. Kane a no brainer.

The only issue with that team is the Man U Players. Surely Bailly in severe danger of being rested before Europa League match? And I could see Romero coming in for De Gea if De Gea starting in Europe. Remember Liverpool at AFCB last season? If Man U lose at City Jose may abandon the league and will also think he can beat Swansea with his 2nd string.

New WC draft – appreciate every reply, guys.

    DDG - Pick
    Alonso - Yoshida - Maguire - Bailly - Holgate
    Sanchez - Hazard - King - Alli - JWP
    Kane - Benteke - Anichebe

Gw36 (TC Sanchez): Bailly -> Monreal (if nailed), possibly Benteke -> Gabbi for -4

          Alonso - MCI - TOT/ARS/MNU - Yoshida - Stephens/Cheapie
          Hazard - Alli - Sane - ARS - xxx

            Cheers!

This is basicly what I can manage. Just don't see the point in getting Gabbi for Saturday when Benteke is in stellar form & has great fixture..?

Anichebe relieves me of benching issues and puts power in midfield

This MCI defense, though - who's nailed? For ARS I was considering Monreal or Gabriel

    2. MTPockets

With Kompany back, Pep has 3 CB, this means that it frees Kolaroc from CB spot and bring competition for Clichy LB spot

apparently conte is very strict on who replaces who:

      luiz > terry
      azpi > zouma
      cahill > ake

So yes, in theory. However very unlikely the title is 100% won by the double, I doubt Ake gets two games.

      Good question Jonty.

Martial perhaps? Depending on how much Rashford plays Thursday, as it's 12 on Sunday vs. Swansea.
Haz could have a field day against poor Holgate.

Josh King away to an already-down Sunderland possible.

Seriously considering Fletcher>Sane and going AOA as I have two of my cheap defenders away and Holgate playing Chelsea.

I'm thinking Siggy to Hazard, very nervous about not owning Hazard for the Southampton game and I think Chelsea will have too much for Everton, even at Goodison. Hazard really hitting form now, looking sharp. Though Hazard is not just a one week punt.

Otherwise is Gabbi nailed? Is Jesus nailed?.... sorry

One week only I'd probably go with a Stoke player. Arnie.

    1. Pinky Blinders

Price rises are all over the place now. Very hard to predict, unlike earlier in the year given the amount of WCs being used and FPL Towers apparently altered the price change algorithm ahead of the initial MC DGW.

Issues putting me off: Jesus/Aguero, which Mci defender, Gabriel/Mustafi, Gabbi fitness/form, Rose/Davies, Mun defence/injuries, Walcott?

    4. Licious Lizard
      • 13 Years
      9 years, 3 months ago

I disagree. I think the extra week could be crucial in assessing form, game time and injuries for some of the potential DGW players.

A lot of uncertainties in some teams:
City: Sane, Jesus, Aguero + def,
      United: Rashford, mids+ defence,
      Soton: Gabbiadini + mids
      Arsenal Sanchez form/position + def
Chelsea: whether or not they will rotate more due to being closer to sealing the trophy

Of course it depends on your team. My team looks great as it is for GW 35, but I'm happy that I have another week to see how everything unfolds.

So in my opinion, I really can't see the benefit of using WC now unless you have both TC and BB for GW 36 and 37 - or unless your team isn't set up for a good GW 35.

    5. End of King Wilson
      • 9 Years

Considering its gw 35 already, where points are more impt than team value, is it worth even taking a -4 to chase a price rise/fall? Could be the difference between a sterling and a sane in a Wc team

    6. Alnair
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 3 months ago

I think catching Saints and City early will be big. A lot of players in a WC35 team won't play each other while a typical GW35 team will have a lot of conflicts.

For me it was easy based on this and because I didn't have King and had very few Palace players but it still depends on your team I suppose.

    7. Hotdogs for Tea
      • 10 Years

If your team is in good shape I can't see the benefit of a WC this week.

My WC will strengthen my bench for the GW37 BB and I don't want to do that a week early.

Also I want to see how Jesus, Rashford, Gabbiadini etc get managed next before potentially getting them in my team on a WC.

If you're into leather and whips, Lukaku or Benteke

Anyone keeping any Man Utd defence on their WC, despite some poor fixtures? 0 shots on target conceded in the last 2 PL games.

I haven't got a wildcard but thinking of getting rid of Valencia, the fixture pile up is real and I sense more disappointment.

True, I think De Gea & Blind look fairly safe though and not too pricey.

I currently have Blind and no WC, so getting rid of him after GW35.

Clichy possibly - hasn't been rotated in a while and only 5.2.

Stones and Bravo for value. Keep an eye on their minutes. Also look at Clichy

Cheers mates. Don't have the guts to go Bravo. Everyone talking about Stones' minutes makes me hesitate :/

Who would you get on a WC this week – Bailly or Clichy?
Can go Bailly -> Clichy next round

Clichy. As we know, Boro struggle to score and City seem to defend well away from home. Also, Bailly could possibly be in the Swansea game

Cheers. And for Arsenal? Their backline seems to be a guessing game

Gabriel cheapest but Monreal potential attacking returns

Monreal could always rotate with Gibbs. Gabriel is only safe until they move to a back 4 imo. I think it has to be Cech or Kosc if you want a 100% nailed on option.

Personally wouldn't invest in Arsenal defence at the moment. They've been below par and can't seem to keep clean sheets. Playing twice in a GW doesn't change that, especially when they're as expensive as they are. I'd only consider them if they start to show some defensive form. If they do, Monreal is who I'd go with

I agree, which is why I'm not keen on letting DDG go. Is this WC backline okay?

                Alonso - Yoshida - Clichy - Maguire/BAILLY? - Holgate

Thanks, relieved. If you have the time to evaluate the rest of my WC draft:

                    DDG - Pick
                    Alonso Yoshida Clichy Bailly Holgate
                    Sanchez Hazard King Alli JWP
                    Kane Benteke Anichebe

                    GW36 (TC sanchez): Benteke -> Gabbi/Rash(3-5-2)
                    GW37 (BB): ?

Seems due to TV I have to choose between having Bailly for Maguire or getting Sané for King in GW37...

List in terms of nailedoniness (is that a word) for the coming weeks including DGW'sfor some of our favoured picks.

    Spurs
    Chelsea
    Liverpool
    CPL
    Everton
    ....some others
    Arsenal
    ....some others
    Man City
    Man Utd

As you can see from my scientifically calculated table, using all available data, Man City and Man Utd sit comfortably at the foot of the entire PL table. Pick with extreme caution...or better still stick with the top two who will score for fun anyway.

United I can understand, but why would City be at the bottom? They have nothing other than the league to worry about now and still need results to make top 4 (and will want top 3)

Pep has rotated all season with every position when he can. Why would he stop now? He's probably the least predictable team sheet of every team at the best of times...

What i'm saying is stick with the top two who score as many goals anyway and are far more predictable. Why risk it?

Well you currently have 7 DGW players and 3 FTs before DGW37. So your transfer priorities have to be DGW players. Jaku, Gibson, Zaha, Carroll all need to go.

Will probably get Kane, but was playing around with a front 3 of Rashford, Gabbi and Jesus. The rest of your team can be insane... You can basically have sanchez, Hazard, Alli, Eriksen, Sane and a good DGW defence.
