A shock defeat at the London Stadium looks to have finally derailed Tottenham Hotspur’s title ambitions, potentially impacting on the teamsheets and motivation levels over the final two Gameweeks. In short, Friday was not a good evening for Fantasy managers. Here’s the Stock Check….

In Decline

Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen
While we can only really speculate on the damage inflicted by Friday’s defeat on the prospects of Spurs’ assets, we can assume that there will be some impact – perhaps a significant one.

Having provided us with such consistency and an array of big points hauls over the past months, the Spurs tri-force of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen failed to conjure a route through a resolute West Ham rearguard, ensuring that our Gameweek 36 started with a disappointing whimper.

The repercussions over the final Gameweeks could be severe.

The defeat means that Chelsea can effectively seal the title with two victories against Middlesbrough and West Brom, all before Spurs next kick a ball.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side could, therefore, face Manchester United for the first of their two double Gameweek 37 fixtures having already surrendered the title.

Clearly, this development forces us to re-assess our Spurs options, with so many of us owning two, if not three of aforementioned assets, or perhaps Ben Davies or Jan Vertonghen in defence.

We have to consider that Spurs will be left deflated, which could certainly influence their level of performance and expected Fantasy output.

Looking back to last season, we’re offered little room for optimism.

Having given up the crown to Leicester City with the infamous 2-2 draw with Chelsea, Spurs went on to suffer a pair of defeats in their remaining two fixtures. A 2-1 reverse at home to Southampton was followed by an unlikely 5-1 hammering at the hands of Newcastle United.

They slumped to those result despite having the incentive to finish above north London rivals Arsenal – that’s not a factor this time around; that is already assured.

Indeed, with second place almost guaranteed, it’s difficult to identify how Spurs will find motivation over their remaining three matches.

The fact that the United fixture is the final 90 minutes to be played at White Hart Lane may well offer one saving grace. Spurs will surely attempt to lift themselves for a final home outing and a fixture that saw them claim a 3-0 victory last season.

Meanwhile, United will arrive still distracted and perhaps leg weary from their European exertions, having perhaps given up hope of a top four finish and with a Europa League final in mind.

But Spurs’ prospects away at Leicester City and Hull City are more difficult to predict.

We can’t be certain on Pochettino’s teamsheet and, even if they do remain at full-strength, the drive for goals and victories has to be in question. We can only hope that they will be determined to avoid last season’s demise, with Kane perhaps at least driven by his quest for a second Golden Boot.

These concerns arise before we even begin to assess the likely effect on Chelsea. Two more victories would give Antonio Conte the luxury of targeting his team selection on the FA Cup final with Arsenal.

Suddenly, with one shock result, our season run-in has been thrown into potential disarray.

We can now only hope that Middlesbrough and West Brom can stall the inevitable and perhaps take comfort that very few Fantasy managers will be immune to the impact of Friday’s result.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

This is a standard bs comment. Spurs pulled themselves back into a position to fight for the title, After most pundits had said it was sewn up at turn of the year. 9 wins in a row and soon as they lose 1 they have "bottled it"

I think that the fact that so many went in with 3 Spurs assets is an example of how heavily this site is still influenced by Mark's personal opinions even though it has evolved a lot since the beginning.

This is not a criticism, merely an observation.

Well they were in the inform side with something to fight for. Probably the best team in the league on current form, going in with less than 3 would've been a bit crazy.

I didn't think going in with 3 Spurs attack was necessarily a mistake but at the same time I wasn't hugely worried about not being able to afford it.

Not so sure about that - have been triple Spurs attack for quite some time and reaped the benefits.

At no point did Mark play any role in that decision. If I was on a wildcard this week, I would have kept them.

If you want to maximize your chances you will consider putting a lot of players for the best top-4 teams, right?
I'd say 3 attacking assets is a bit too much, but to have Kane and Alli or Eriksen was a good pick.

Jesus would have been my captain of choice if I didn't fear Sanchez or this was a SGW.

Been really hot on captains lately often getting the best by going massively against the grain. However Sanchez stats are still okay so risky to go against with two games.

Best not to think about King. My regret of the season.

Two too. I tried to bring Baines from the bench to replace Stephens and have one more player to play today, but could not do before deadline.

3 clean sheets in a row and not a single west ham defender on the rise

Best defender for 5.5 or less for GW 37 and 38? Other current defenders are Bailly, Monreal, Holgate, Stephens.

Not many options there, Mawson maybe?

No real DGw's to be honest. I would look at Bournemouth. Possibly Pool who have tightened up. Ake if you are a gambler.

    That feeling when...

    Kane: 2pts
    Alli: 2pts
    Eriksen: 2pts

Tripling up on attack is always risky... You win some week, you lose in other.

Atleast you didnt put armband on them 😛

time to sell kane? Not in great form, I could re-adjust and go to 4-4-2 selling for anichebe. I could then afford kosc, monreal and alonso in defence.

I thought Kane nd Alli OK last night. W Ham just stifled them. They had 3 easy opportunities that would have gone in normally.

      Sell him for whom?

I think it's good time to sell, but who should come in is quite important question.

I thought about Costa because of fixtures and to block the chasers, but situation changed.

Double HUL defence here - thought against tripling up when I saw they had Spurs in 38.

    In retrospect......

Is Coutiniho with a SGW a better option to a Chelsea/Tottenham player or other with a dgw

Own kane Eriksen Hazard alexis and jesus already

    1. AndyCook

See what he looks like this week but I would say probably not as Hazard will at least play one game and likely the others will still all play two. It's not like any will play less than one!

I'm thinking of transferring out Lukaku for Jesus.

Good idea? One has a DGW and the other has Watford at home.

I think Jesus is a good pick. But I wouldn't want to sell Lukaku if I have him now.
