Transfer rumours and early scouting of the promoted sides were among the pre-season preparations underway this week.

As we published our in-depth analysis of the three new Premier League arrivals, our Hot Topic posters offered their own expert guidance on picking the top assets from those sides who have moved up from the Championship.

Elsewhere, the community’s scribes have been looking at Fantasy action taking place in Europe, while offering a post-mortem on the methods used to select a captain of the 2016/17 season, with a nod to the next campaign.

There’s further statistical analysis in our Members table round-up, which focuses on the underlying numbers behind the performances of 2016/17’s key assets, while we also discover that there is still competitive mini-league action taking place over the summer.

The Community Articles

Our community’s insatiable desire for Fantasy Football during the summer months is being met via the windswept chilly stadia of Norway, as Fantasy Eliteserien continues to gather interest during June.

Niemi delivered his latest update from the top flight of Norwegian football, including a stock check of the players to draft in and those to sell on. This impressive series has earned him a £20 Amazon voucher after being voted the top community writer of the month for May.

Elsewhere, YMA still has some unfinished business with the Fantasy Premier League 2016/17 season and he dropped by with a look at how his fixture and form analysis fared in predicting the best captain each week.

Meanwhile, Red Lightning has been taking a historical look at the prospects of the three promoted sides next season.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some statistical analysis, a feature or a scout report brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Virgil Van Dijk’s potential move from Southampton to Liverpool generated plenty of interest earlier this week, with FPL Virgin among those questioning whether the Dutch defender is worth his reported £50m+ price tag.

By the end of the week, any points were rendered somewhat moot when the Reds sheepishly announced they would no longer be pursuing the centre-back.

It remains to be seen if another side can match the Saints’ valuation, or whether Van Dijk remains on the south coast as their key Fantasy temptation.

Kuntheman – Silva hopes his side, Manchester City, are not among the suitors as he believes they are already well equipped in the heart of defence to prevail next season.

Liverpool are also reported to be interested in Roma winger Mohamed Salah, although according to local media on Merseyside they may be priced out of the move. Should a deal be brokered, Parm believes he could be a strong addition to the Reds squad.

Pre-season planning also took in whether Arsenal’s top scorer in 2016/17, Alexis Sanchez, should be reclassified from a midfielder to a forward. Billy Gilmore thinks the Chilean should, based on his goalscoring exploits last season, while Baines on Toast is among those who are happy to keep the status quo.

The Gunners’ north London rivals Spurs were also in our community’s thoughts this week as they considered how best to tackle the inevitable price hikes for three of their 2016/17 stars, Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli.

There was further chat during the week around whether such price rises may lead to FPL veterans ditching a tried and tested budget spread at the start of next season.

Another consideration when investing in Spurs assets is how they will cope with the demands of competing for the Premier League title alongside a Champions League campaign.

Mark asked how European involvement might have an impact on teams next season, in particular regarding rotation. Red Lightning added to the debate with a look at how English clubs have fared at the top European level in recent years.

Thoughts of chasing the title or a European place are unlikely to be top priorities for newly promoted Brighton, Huddersfield Town and Newcastle United, who will surely be happy enough to finish 2017/18 still in the top flight.

As the trio prepare for the Premier League, we asked for your top tips on getting the most out of promoted players, particularly in the early stages of the season.

Tapping into the save point potential of a cheap goalkeeper is among the top advice on offer. But for all three sides, that position is very much up for grabs, with Brighton linked with Australian stopper Mat Ryan and Huddersfield in search of a new custodian. In addition, the recipient of the number one jersey at Newcastle is still uncertain according to Magpie supporter The Tinman’s assessment of his side’s key assets.

Finally, our interview with FPL winner and Everton fan Ben Crabtree revealed that he took the crown in spite of his strict ban on Liverpool players. This prompted us to find out how club affiliations have affected our Fantasy management.

To view all our discussions, please visit our Hot Topics page. We are also still keen to hear from you about how this can be further developed.

The Members Tables

Among the newly introduced features in the Members area is the ability to filter home and away statistics to take into account more recent performances.

My table looking at the most shot-happy players over their last four road trips is an example of the sort of data now available.

With Spurs playing their home games at Wembley next season, Spencer has taken a detailed look at their players’ home and away form.

Those looking at investing in Manchester City forwards next season are advised to glance at my table on the frequency of penalty area attempts. There is further insight into last season’s sharp shooting stars in Greenwindmill’s latest table.

Meanwhile, FPL Virgin has constructed a series of tables looking at the best assets by position, covering goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Colman’s Mustard sits at the top of the Fantasy Eliteserien FFScout mini-league during the competiton’s international break, with Prinsenkrysset and Bøllefrø in hot pursuit. Dutch Warriors remains on top in the Fantasy Eliteserien FFScout H2H league

Do you think that Qatar will still host the 2022 World Cup? And do you think it should?

First, we had the story of dozens of stadium builders dead because of the poor conditions and thousands of others unpaid while their passports were confiscated to stop them protesting.

Now, we've seen in the last week that half a dozen other countries in the region have broken off all diplomatic ties with Qatar and imposed heavy sanctions because of the revelation that it has paid more than one billion dollars to terrorist groups since 2014.

So, to recap, will they host it and should they?

Yes. Shouldn't have been given to them in the first place, but seeing as it has, let them host it. No messing about.

A week's a long time in politics, so several years will feel like many decades.

Problem with lots of these allegations is that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. I say this ONLY in the context of the situation in Iraq and Syria, more so in Syria where there is a cival war but with many factions and many backers. The might have backed someone who turned to darker things etc.

Anyway only from a security of the fans point of view will it stripped away, the corruption, the politics will be swept under the carpet just like it is at any other sporting event.

Agreed that it will sadly probably go ahead unless there's a huge security reason for it not to.

I don't even know where to start with your second paragraph so will leave it.

Dead stadium builders and confiscated passports has nothing to do with freedom fighting. They're human rights abuses. Did you read the Guardian's report on the north Korean slave labour building they're stadium.
        Quite shocking

They shouldn't host the world cup. Thousands have died in construction linked to the game; slaves in their 20's dying of heart attacks due to the heat. 5 years is a long time: we could have war in the region by then. I sense the WC won't go ahead.

Protestants vote for DUP and Catholics vote for Sinn Fein regardless of policies, they are scared to vote for anyone else in case the other major party wins. Very much like how all the smaller parties in the rest of the UK suffered as everyone was either voting Labour or Consevative.

My 1 vote for the Alliance Party, the only party with no religious side, went largely unnoticed 🙂

Oh Corbyn absolutely is. He has a terrible 30 year+ track record loud and clear on that and hasn't changed one bit.

Totally agree with you. Everyone lost. The solution that has taken place is awful. The only other alternative was even worse - a coalition of Labour, Lib Dems, Greens and SNP. Putting aside the fact that each of those parties makes me shiver and want to emigrate - they wouldn't all add up to a majority so it wouldn't be right either. Everyone lost.

It's been going for longer than 11 years, but that's as far back as the Season history shows.

If you look at our Hall of Fame you will see quite a few going back to 2006/7 (11 years including the season just finished).

In each case (I think), their Season history shows the 10 years from 2006/7 to 2015/16 below their Game-week history for 2016/17.

I'm sure some lower-mid to lower table club would love to have him. The real question is does he think he's too good for his actual level?

Excellent news from United this evening - a centre back signing.

You'd think Smalling might be up for the chop now.

Lindelof and Bailly first choice with Rojo as back up. Jones may get to stay but he's injury prone. Blind is an odd one as I'm not sure he really wants to play CB but also don't think Mourinho is ever going to use him in midfield.

That's not the greatest option to be honest. He looks a completely different player at LB - a real liability.

Darmian did well at the end of the season at LB but ultimately we need to make Shaw work or sign a new one I think.

Give me a CB who can read a game and avoid bookings/rash challenges in dangerous areas over goal threat any day. At the functional level, his first and most important job is to defend.

I am convinced there is some kind of money laundering going on with players signed from the Portuguese league. As you said the fees paid for players playing in a Micky mouse league just don't stack up

Most of them are players how have spent a lot of time in development in the Portuguese academies/junior teams. They know they can produce good players so they jack up the prices.

If any of them were English/PL academy players we'd see even larger fees going.

Hi, just a question on formation.
Many people advocate 3-4-3 saying you need as many attackers (see interview with FPL winner).
Please can someone explain where my logic is wrong as I seem to prefer 3-5-2.
To me (not a Chuckle Brother reference!) with either 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 you're going to need a 4.5 bencher for either midfield or forward. Now if we give an extra 3.5-4m (say) to the forward or midfielder we're going to play then we're going to get someone in the 8 to 8.5 bracket. Going by the season just gone, that doesn't get you many points for a forward (Defoe maybe the exception) but does get you a host of midfielders to choose from that out perform any 8-8.5 forward.
So is it not the case (ladies and gentleman - and others) that it is better to go for 3-5-2?
It looks like 3-4-3 would be feasible if you had three 10m+ but that seems way too much of an expense.

I agree fully. I'd rather a Pedro or a Sane or a Lallana over a 3rd cheap striker playing for mid table side

343 is only an option with an expensive front line eg Kane Lukaku Jesus/Kun but then your defence will be awful

    2. Dr Dream
      • 13 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

I'm always amazed how many folk outside of these pages regularly play 3-5-2 (or sometimes even just one forward) and do very nicely at the game. I'm not too sure wether we have simply talked ourselves into it being the best way or whether it actually is.

FPL is skewed towards the midfielders. 3-5-2 should be the default formation unless they stop lavishing the mids with extra points.
