Brighton and Hove Albion made their first move in the summer transfer market late last month with the acquisition of playmaker Pascal Gross from German outfit FC Ingolstadt 04 for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old arrives at the Amex Stadium on a four-year deal and, according to manager Chris Hughton, had no shortage of suitors to choose from:

“We are delighted that Pascal has opted to sign for us, amid interest from a number of clubs from the Premier League and across Europe, and I am pleased to welcome him to the club. He offers something different to our existing midfielders, as an attacking midfielder in a more advanced position, operating behind the forward line; he will give us a different and new option going into the new season.”

The History

Gross joined the youth set-up at 1899 Hoffenheim as a 17-year-old back in 2008.

After managing a mere five first-team appearances in three seasons, he made his way to second-tier outfit Karlsruhe, where he quickly established himself as a regular.

Three goals and a pair of assists in 24 first-team appearances earned Gross a move to Ingolstadt in the summer of 2012 but he struggled to make his presence felt, providing just four goals and five assists in 59 appearances over his first two seasons.

The 2014/15 campaign proved a pivotal one for player and club alike, as Gross steered Ingolstadt into the Bundesliga on the back of seven goals and 23 assists in 34 appearances.

A quick glance at his output – one goal and four assists in 2015/16, followed by five goals and four assists last term – suggests that Gross struggled to adjust to the step up, yet the underlying numbers shed far more light on his abilities.

In each of his two seasons in the Bundesliga, Gross created more scoring chances (95 and 98) than any player, which is all the more impressive bearing in mind that Ingolstadt suffered the ignominy of relegation in 2016/17.

On the international scene, he turned out for the Germany U18 and U19 sides on a total of 12 occasions, scoring twice.

The Prospects

As mentioned in our article on Brighton’s promoted squad, Hughton mainly utilised a 4-4-2 set-up last season but the Seagulls boss has conceded that he’s already eyeing up a one-man frontline in a bid to tighten up in the top-flight:

“I think it’s difficult to go through a season playing 4-4-2, particularly as a new club. Leicester play it generally, but they are more established. I would see myself at times playing it, but also very much a 4-4-1-1.”

Although he’s versatile enough to play on either flank and in a central midfield berth, Hughton’s words suggest it is far more likely that Gross has been purchased to take up the role in “the hole†behind a lone striker.

Crucially from a Fantasy perspective, the new boy’s exceptional delivery means that he is favourite be handed set-piece duties, while Gross has also shown in the past that he’s more than capable of tucking away spot-kicks, too.

In terms of creativity, his minutes per key pass – 29.8 in 2015/16 and 27.9 last season – are hugely impressive and far superior to new team-mate Anthony Knockaert. Indeed, that puts Gross just ahead of big-hitters Kevin De Bruyne (28), Christian Eriksen (28.3) and Mesut Ozil (28.5) in the previous domestic campaign.

Last season’s Championship Player of the Year, Seagulls right winger Knockaert – who racked up 15 goals and eight assists from his role on the right – is likely to garner some pre-season attention. Yet an average of 40.5 minutes per key pass in 2016/17 underlines just why Hughton has looked to boost his creative options. All the more so when you consider that fellow wide man Jiri Skalak was second for key passes, providing 39 in 31 outings.

Likely to come in around the 5.5 mark in Fantasy Premier League, Gross certainly has the quality to emerge as a creative force to be reckoned with for Hughton’s side.

But six goals from 121 efforts on goal over his two years in the Bundesliga is a concern, particularly as 87 of those arrived from outside the box, underlining his penchant for long-range efforts.

But if he can settle in quickly and offer a favourable opening set of fixtures, Gross has the quality to rival Knockaert as the man most likely among the promoted contingent.

      Last day of the season...

      Liverpool vs Brighton
      Newcastle vs Chelsea
      Huddersfield vs Arsenal

      Gameweek before that...

      Brighton vs Man U
      Man City vs Huddersfield
      (Watford vs Newcastle)

Huddersfield and the Gulls better be hoping they've reached that magic 40 before then!

Triple Spurs, double City, Sanchez. United defence.

One or 2 of Knockaert, Gayle, Ritchie and Murray worth considering based on opening fixtures.

This is big news. Having a fully functioning 15 for that period will be crucial.

Makes me wonder whether saving the first wildcard for then may be a sound idea...just blitz that intense month.

Dont think its a good idea to plan to save the WC, all too frequently you need it before then. Unless you get off to a good start then you usually end up needing it to get the right players in.

Manchester United play none of the top 5 in the first 7 Gameweeks.

From Gameweek 8 they have Liverpool, Huddersfield (!!!), Chelsea and Tottenham.

Oxlade's lack of positional awareness being shown up. He's not a CM, not cute enough to be an AM.. I think Wenger's got it right at trying him as a RWB. His physical attributes are his main strengths.

Positional awareness is necessarily for all positions though, and certainly no less at WB where a player needs to cover a lot of ground

Perhaps it's just his positional awareness in that position, or lack of experience, or lateral/two-dimensional positional awareness haha

              😀

Positional awareness tends to be talked about in defensive terms. A FB with poor positioning but with great pace and stamina suits the wingback role well. Likewise, a RM who isn't good enough to be an outright winger, but doesn't neglect the defensive side of things (Valencia, A Young, Moses) are also a decent fit.

I think Oxlade with more pitch time could be a good RWB. He'll run all day.

Hmm disagree about positional awareness. It's essential to all 11 players in my understanding. Even the manager needs to stay in his box!

I guess a WB has less defensive responsibility than a RB in terms of tackling at the back, but defence comes from everywhere on the pitch, so positioning seems as important even on the wing. And that's without mentioning attacking positioning, which of course is balanced with def position for each position. Hence I talk about positioning in general rather than split into def and attack. Perhaps defensive intelligence or awareness is what he lacks since he often seems to be fairly one track with his play, which comes from lack of experience, intelligence/motivation to learn. I reckon he'll come good wherever he plays given the time. Which means he'll make a good WB

Yeah, it's important all over the pitch but relatively less so in the forward and wider positions, i.e. it's most important for a GK, then the CBs, DMs and FBs, etc.

He's like the midfield equivalent of Phil Jones! Doesn't look a natural fit in any regular position. I think he could do well as a RM in a 442 or as a RWB in this new 3421.

Will be interesting to see if Bellerin forces a move then we might see Oxlade get a run of games (for better or worse!)

          Conundrum.
Moses is a attacking midfielder now playing WB, Alonso a full back.
To retain choice then classify both as defenders and price accordingly to retain interest.
In this case Alonso 7m( possibly 6.5m)Moses 6m (even 5.5) would be my call.

Yeah perhaps 0.5 less than Alonso would make sense. In all likelihood though, Alonso would still be straight in my team at 7.0. It's only a difficult decision if there is tremendous value elsewhere. So in my mind there's an argument for Alonso at 7.0, though I'm aware people want the game to be easy with him at 5.5 haha

There has to be an element of what price does a player become an option.
imo Alonso is more attractive at 7 than moses at 6 but Moses at 5.5 becomes an attractive option.
At the same time, the elite of Kane etc should be priced accordingly in that sacrifices have to be made if you're picking them.
On the whole they seem to get the opening pricing fairly right.

Agreed in principle. Though I bought moses during last season for 5.5 and kept for quite a while. He becomes attractive as a defender for me at 6.5 easily. At 6.0 he's first in my team, and at 5.5 I feel he could be 60% owed in GW1, or more. I guess we just value him differently. We both want to avoid players being too obvious a choice, yet not pricing them out of teams.

FPL need to chill on the reclassification, keep it as it is like they have done with second strikers and wingers staying in midfield. If they reclass everyone based on average position then it would leave a lot less in terms of selection across the board.

Works both ways. Moses as defender gives us another (perhaps more legitimate) choice in defence. Moses in midfield at a lower price gives us an option in midfield. Each season is new, so I don't see it as reclassification, but simply classification.
