Friday’s capture of Derby County midfielder was Watford’s first foray into the summer transfer market, with the 22-year-old signing a five-year contract at Vicarage Road. The Rams received an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £8m.

Named man of the match in England U21’s European Championship semi-final defeat to Germany last night, Hughes will now complete the formalities on his return. However, he has already cited the challenge of taking the step up as his motivation for the move.

“Every English player wants to play in the Premier League. Having played in the Championship for so long I gave it a good go to get promoted, but the chance to join a Premier League team was too hard to turn down. I’m massively excited, it’s a new chapter in my life and I can’t wait to get started.”

The History

Snapped up by Derby from local side Mickleover Jubilee, Hughes was to rise rapidly through the ranks.

He made a reserve team debut in 2011 and, later that same season, was called into the first team squad by then manager Nigel Clough. He made his debut from the bench in a 3-2 defeat to Peterborough and grew in stature from that point.

Hughes scored his first Derby goal in September 2012 having been promoted permanently to Clough’s first team squad. Come November, he picked up the Championship Player of the month award and made his first U21 international appearance.

At that stage, there were reports that ten Premier League clubs were assessing his progress ahead of the January transfer window. But Derby resisted any approach for the 18-year-old, with Hughes suffering an injury later in February that would see him ruled out until mid-April.

Progress continued in 2013/14 with Hughes recording four goals and six assists over 39 Championship appearances.

Hughes followed that with two goals and five assists in 2014/15 – a campaign which saw him make 37 appearances for the Rams.

A further, more significant injury was to follow in the opening game of the 2015/16 season.

Hughes suffered cruciate ligament damage to his knee. It kept him sidelined for six months and saw him limited to just six appearances that term.

Last season Hughes made 28 starts from central midfield with 10 appearances from the bench, producing two goals and three assists.

He left Derby having made 165 league appearances, scoring nine and recording a total of 17 assists.

The Prospects

Those statistics offer the greatest indication of Hughes’ immediate Fantasy prospects – he is not yet a prolific scorer or creator of goals.

However, Hughes is a player who has epitomised the term “potential” and we’re yet to see how he will develop.

He has mainly been deployed in a traditional central midfield position at Derby in a 4-3-3 formation.

Watford’s new manager Marco Silva is a fierce advocate of 4-2-3-1, while also turning to 4-1-4-1 formation at Hull City.

The Hornets boss always loves to play with width and will likely turn to one, if not two holding midfielders in the double pivot.

Hughes, despite his six-foot frame, is unlikely to be earmarked for one of those roles.

An industrious midfielder, he will not shy away from a tackle. Indeed, Hughes’ enthusiasm earned him ten yellow cards last season; another factor that will likely limit immediate Fantasy interest.

But his future surely lies in attacking areas.

An elegant and technically gifted footballer, he confesses to model his game on Barcelona legends Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

The comparisons have some merit. Hughes has quick feet, rarely concedes possession and his ability to link player with tidy but incisive passes belies his age and experience.

He created 43 chances for team-mates last season – a rate of one every 62 minutes. Meanwhile, 20 of his 33 shots arrived from outside the box.

Neither of those metrics suggest that we need to consider Hughes as a Fantasy option. However, there are factors that we do need to monitor.

Firstly, Hughes is likely to be priced at 5.0 or below – possibly even 4.5.

Watford also rotate superbly with West Bromwich Albion, a pairing that lends itself to partnering either two budget midfielders or a midfielder and a third forward. That will ensure the Hughes will be among those considered.

Interestingly, he has previously been outspoken about a move away from Derby, stressing that he would not settle for anything less than regular starts.

“Some players are comfortable sitting on the bench but I don’t like that at all. I can’t imagine that ever happening to me.”

That would suggest that, while he appears to share many qualities with Tom Cleverley – who also joins Watford permanently on July 1 – Hughes will still find a role in Silva’s revolution.

While last season’s budget revelation Etienne Capoue could be handed a deep-lying position by Silva, it remains to be seen how Hughes fits into the jigsaw.

Should he be given the freedom to exert some influence and flair in attacking areas with Silva signing or unlocking goals in his new side, then Hughes may yet become a budget consideration.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

In search of the new Capoue and Allen.

Each year a cheap, high scoring fifth midfield option emerges. Etienne Capoue of Watford last year was a great example, with a raft of goals early on in the season.

Stoke’s Joe Allen was another budget gem, with a host of double digit scores.

In seasons gone by Raheem Sterling, at 4.5 was among the best of this budgetgroup.

We can safely assume that Will Hughes will be priced around the 5.0m mark. Could he be the next Allen or Capoue?

Or are there other midfielders that you anticipate will be priced cheaply that you have your eye on?

They are trying to shaep the overall strategic parameters which then helps them work out the mini-strategies / tactics to use in the game. I see it as different levels of strategies.

I thought they were going to make a really interesting point about those who went Sanchez to Hazard and missed the big Sanchez West Ham haul. But they basically said it was all down to luck.

Part of it was luck, but they hinted at what I thought the real reason was in the article. A straight up classic example of fixture trumping form!

Hazard has after his haul v everton fixtures versus:

GW 12 mid (defensively solid at the time, esp at home)
                  GW 13 TOT (title rival)
                  GW 14 mci (title rival)

                  Points were 4,2,9

                  Sanchez had:

                  GW12 mnu (title rival)
                  GW13 BOU (terrible defense)
GW14 whu (at the time, in a relegation fight and really struggling at the new stadium)

                  1, 14, 23

                  Simple as that really.

Meta game means everything overarching and beyond the game that you rarely consider.

I like the analysis on 'herd mentality'. The Sanchez v Hazard thing is about they hype on here. Hazard 'appeared' to be the obvious move to many on here and once momentum started going, huge amounts of people made the transfer.

I'd like to see them do an analysis of the gameweek where Siggy was leading the poll for captaincy. The same week Sanchez was playing Hull. I couldn't begin to understand why everyone was picking Siggy, yet somehow a huge majority did it. Sanchez hauled and everyone on here was left confused.

He's a central midfielder and unlikely to be utilised as a DM at Watford due to their likely formation. The FFS article looks at his past, but more crucially where he will likely fit in with a new team. The past only tells one story.

In addition the hot topic also compares him to Capoue - another DM who produced the goods.

Although, nice but ultimately doomed attempt to create friction with our good friends at Who Got the Assist. 😉

Mahrez at 5.5mil in 15/16 was pure budget gold. I had him for GW1 that year and it's probably the best FPL decision I ever made. King likewise in latter of last season.

I'll certainly be looking in this 5.5 price bracket again for another 5th mid gem. Demarai Gray is one I'll be looking at, particularly if Mahrez goes.

I like Hughes, but don't see him as an FPL prospect just yet.

Indeed. What marked Mahrez out was that he did that all season. Sterling was great- but only for a little while, same with Allen and Capoue. A winger though who turns world class one summer for a relegation battling side that suddenly produces league winning displays- that is indeed gold. A one off.

Absolutely no one could have anticipated Capoue, and I'm speaking as someone who had him in my squad from GW1 as bench fodder - yes, he sat on my bench through all those goal-scoring extravaganzas.

This year, rather than have a 4.5m 5th midfielder, ensure my 5th is at least 5m so that when this season's bargain-basement MID emerges I can leap aboard the bandwagon with a single transfer (i.e. I'll have wiggle room if he's 4.6 or 4.7 by the time I clock on).

No, he was a fifth and on my bench throughout.

I called him as a fifth mid, we had him as a form player in the pre-seaon guide and articles - even mentioned him on the first FPL show - but never expected what we go from him.

Yeah, almost everyone here got him as a fodder knowing he could sub in and potentially provide some points. Andy S probably meant that we couldn't have anticipated that he would score every week, not that he wouldn't have been capable of scoring at all.

He had a very attacking role in pre-season, and scored a fair few. I saw him somewhere in between a 4th and 5th mid and started him GW2, but I'm sure many saw him as a bit more than that.

I think his price went against him 😀

I'd be interested to see stats of Antonio during and after Payet. In my mind he scored most of his goals at the back post with a header via a Payet cross. Unless West Ham change personnel, I can't see the same time of situation this season. Ayew isn't going to provide the same delivery, Lanzini is not a wide player and Snoddy/Feghouli might struggle for minutes.

A lot depends on transfers - West Ham need to be pretty active and they don't always (or even often) spend too well.

can't see any of the senior people involved getting a custodial sentence, we all know people at that level of the establishment are still protected even when the point is proven, but at least it helps get the truth of the situation out there, and avoids getting it swept under the carpet

Just on the rotation article from last night.

    I'm thinking about it for my £4.5m 3rd & 4th budget defender.

The only rotating teams I could see that wouldn't leave you at risk of leaving a big haul on the bench is Brighton and Huddersfield.

But can Huddersfield be relied on for clean sheets at home? They seem pretty awful.

I think i'll be getting their respective keepers and then monitor for 4m gems afterwards. I guess Heaton Robinson will also be 9m so tough call.

I'd want a player capable of getting a big haul on the bench, it provides you with potentially useful bench cover and if they are capable of big hauls away (or in the tough home games) imaging their haul potential in the easier games !

        George Boyd?

Having a big scoring bench player is torture, though.

I still shudder at the time I was benching Kane in his first season.

I've been burn't on numerous occasions as well, but the positives of having a cheap bench that's capable of contributing when required more than out weighs the negatives IMO.

Cazorla has not played since October 2016, when he suffered a recurrence of a previous Achilles problem.

On 31st May, SportsMole reported that Cazorla had undergone eight surgeries, there had been complications since November, he hadn't been given a time-frame to return and it was very difficult to put a date on it, but he didn't think it would be within five months.

The FFS Injuries tab merely reports Arsene Wenger's earlier statement on 30th March that Cazorla was ruled out for the remainder of the season and gives him a 75% chance of returning in August.

I would be surprised if he returns that soon.

I think l'll be getting Alves for city, I reckon he'll be 6.5m and worth every penny. Wonder if Spurs will adapt Walker into a back three and start with both he and Tripper? I want 5m Trippier!

What if City also sign Walker (What's the latest on that? I'm out of the loop on that one)
He'll surely be rotated. Even if Walker doesn't go, I wouldn't back Alves to play week in week out, especially during a heavy fixture period. Even Fernandinho can do a job at RB.

@ GIGGS BOSON. Comments are disabled again on your article...

But in reply - was wondering why fit for same equation when in practice Home range is 950-1350, but Away range 1023-1350? I assume Away max to min difference is smaller, but questioning use of the same equation if it results in what looks like overstating away ranking?

However I may just misunderstand how Away rank effects ticker vs Home rank. eg. if it's Arsenal vs Bournemouth, I don't know how the ticker weights 1241 home vs 1241 away.

    1. Piggs Boson
      • 14 Years

If you ignore home/away for a moment and just see them all as different fixtures, you should see that they should all be on the same ranking scale. If only 3 teams kept a CS in a bou fixture, and only 3 kept one in a MCI fixture, the two fixtures should have the exact same ranking, no? That requires them to all be on the same scale.

Maybe there's some deep maths I'm not getting here from your comment - I'm not a mathematician, just a programmer/ex-engineer 😀

Definitely not deep maths, just my misunderstanding.

I thought the ticker amalgamated ratings (colour) with some sort of home/away weighting (either due to a general skew towards better home results or fixtures individually adjusted for the match-up).

e.g. Ars good at home vs Leicester bad away = Very good game for Arsenal & very bad game for Leicester. Having actually looked at it I'm just wrong. Cheers for the clarification.

    2. Piggs Boson
      • 14 Years
      9 years, 14 days ago

Oh and the ticker doesn't weigh the two teams against each other, it only ranks the opponent a team is facing. E.g. a TOT fixture would have the same ranking for Huddersfield as it would for Manchester United.

Lot of love for Kane, and understandably.

However he's likely coming in at a premium price of 12-13.0m. He typically has a slow start (2 goals in his opening 5 last season) and Spurs pretty much have no home games.

Opening fixtures do seem nice, will be interesting to see whether he will be a staple in every team.

Kane's only started a season twice, one was after the Euros. You're extrapolating from very little data.

Not playing at White Hart Lane is a worry though. Let's hope they get used to the pitch during pre-season. Although it's not like they didn't score goals away from home last season.

For me Kane is the obvious captain at the moment, given the uncertainty in the City attack.

in terms of having a premium player (mid or striker) he must be the one to have, he's nailed, generally prolific through the season, scores home and away - other options in the premium bracket:
Lukaku - where will he be playing, will he be competing with Costa or Morata, will a move change his productivity
      Ibra - gone
Sanchez - will he move and if so will it affect his performances, if he stays what position will he be and will he just be running down his contract (think you can buy out your last 6 months of contract)
Aguero - rotation risk under pep
KDB - positional and rotation risk under Pep
Jesus - rotation risk under Pep
Costa - gone, or competing with Lukaku
Hazard - currently injured, probably missing start of season
      Liverpool players - lucky dip

Kane seems to be the safe option, as for the Wembley factor, surely with preseason and every home match there they'll get used to it, even if Spurs don't get the same win ratio i still expect Kane to be scoring

Plenty of posts/hot topics about defensive rotations for Home and away or easy fixture combos....good stuff...

Just to chuck a further consideration into the pot that gets overlooked a bit. When checking FPL teams that are doing well it's amazing how often some of those teams have taken a chance on doubling, or very often tripling up, on defenders/keeper and calling it right at any one given time. It's a high risk strategy, and one I've never done, but it remains a fact that it's a strategy that reaps rewards if called right.,

    1. Deulofail
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 14 days ago

I'm not sure it's high risk necessarily. Though I never shy away from doubling and tripling, and I never do well.

      1. Dr Dream
        • 13 Years
        9 years, 13 days ago

I would never do it because I generally like to keep an interest in more games. Realistically though it only requires to call two or three of the big teams throughout the season to go on decent run of CS's....and most of them do for a while...

        1. Deulofail
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 13 days ago

Exactly. And add that double in defence can also mean double in attack, since we have defenders with plenty of goal threat. Imagine for example having Bellerin and Kolasinac on a day that Arsenal win 4 - 0. Could be a massive haul if they are both involved, and a massive swing against rivals who have 1 or 0 Arsenal defenders. Likewise imagine having Cedric, Bertrand and Forster through a period of easy fixtures where they get CSs and lots of goals. Could be a huge reward. Anyway, that's what tempted me last time, and it didn't work out. Doesn't stop me doing it again though if the individual players and prices are right.

Last season I doubled up with Cedric and Bertrand, and Morgan and Fuchs, during both their great runs of fixtures. Both were massive fails. I never had a chelsea defender till I doubled up in the last 2 or 3 GWs to good effect. But that was a safe move in my mind, not risky.

        1. Dr Dream
          • 13 Years
          9 years, 13 days ago

I think the trick is to go all out for the big clubs if anybody does do that strategy and keep your fingers crossed that we time it right.

For all our mirth and merriment at their defences even City and Liverpool piled up a fair few CS's between them at seasons end...and both for the types of runs of fixtures we perhaps could have predicted.

I double and triple a lot, especially in defence (GK + " defs) - fantastic when a CS rolls in. But that's partly because I play in mini-leagues with weekly prizes with nae money for second.

However, I wouldn't start the season tripled - wait until clubs and players start to show some form.

Best move of my season. It's all about the doubles and triples. You find differentials there because people avoid doubling when they would otherwise choose the second player because they're great FPL options

Strongly considering doubling up on Cedric and Bertrand/Van Dijk to start the season. Fixtures look good for a few clean sheets and if not they offer plenty of attacking threat. If it goes wrong there should be good options in that 5.5-5.0 bracket for an easy switch. If it goes well the reward could be big.

Thanks man 🙂 Hope we are going to be fellows. 😀

Me too, players that transfer clubs after prices have been set can be golden.
