The 104th edition of the Tour de France got into gear this weekend, which gives us another chance to take part in a summer Fantasy game.

For those playing the Velo Games Fantasy Cycling game there is a Fantasy Football Scout community league to take part in (league code – 776044417).

Here’s a quick reminder of the rules, team selection and some key cyclists to watch out for.

The Rules

Each player takes the role of a manager of a professional cycling team. The aim of the contest is to select the best possible team of nine riders, while operating within the conditions set on team selection. The better your racers perform during the three week event, the more points they will accumulate for your Fantasy squad.

Teams are given 100 credits to select their riders. credits are the games’ currency. Each rider is given a value in credits, based on their prospective points-scoring abilities.

However it is to be noted that there won’t be any further transfers available. So players are advised to choose their initial teams with a lot of care and precision.

Team Selection

Riders are split into four Rider Classes, which reflect their strengths, weaknesses and role within their team. These categories are All-Rounder, Climber, Sprinter and Unclassed Riders.

Each team must contain two All-Rounders, two Climbers, one Sprinter, three Unclassed Riders and one Wild Card. The Wild Card selection may be from any rider category, and allows a team manager to specialise somewhat in the team they pick.

The Route

Let us take a look at the important aspects of the route which plays a major role in deciding the results of a race.
This year’s race is expected to be more competitive and not favour any particular team. The race is 13 km shorter than the previous one and the climbs are much lesser than in 2016. A high number of steep mountain gradients are a part. The race started in Dusseldorf –  the first time in three decades that this contest has started in Germany.

Important stages

There are 21 stages in total during the course of the race. Some of the races which are expected to play an important role in deciding the fate of the race are Stage 5,8, 9, 12, 13, 17 and 20.

Prominent Players

There are a total of 22 teams and 198 players taking part in this year’s tour.
They can be classified using various parameters. I have prepared a list on the basis of past records, bookies odds and current form.

Favourites: Richie Porte, Chris Froome, and Nairo Quintana.

Dreams Can captain goalkeepers at will.

Me too, have really gone for the mavericks for this one. Looking forward to a great day's racing, though working till 4pm so highlights most likely ... regarding my previous comment on the leagues there appears to be three king of the mountain leagues but two are labelled the same but with different numbers entered in each ...can't work it out. I'm on a very unreliable wifi link at the moment...on and off constantly.

I just used the number given by FPL dreams.

I'll never get over my love affair with the TdF. For me it's the biggest and best sporting spectacle in the world and all I really want is a few riders to cheer on to try and beat Froome...unlikely but, hey ho...

Absolutely ... makes brilliant telly. Crazy crowds and fantastic scenery to complement the racing. Wish they could find a way to make the sprint stages a bit more interesting though...perhaps just make them shorter Also I miss the old channel 4 commentary guys. That said they've managed to replace them pretty well, the expert summarizer is particularly good

The one in the hot topic (07184833) is the one we're supposed to join, but it looks like the original league from the main game is also in this game too.

Who do we think will go for it today? Cummings is the obvious one. Ulissi for sure, maybe Calmejane? De Gendt could try today, but maybe he'll go for it on Sunday instead.

200km sprint stages are really boring. I don't get why they put so many of them in the race.

Thought I had the dream team of mavericks today but only managed one placing ...Gesink for second. Just got home, will catch highlights at 7pm.
Rolland, Pantano, Pinot, Gesink, Cummings, Gallopin, Barguil, Wellens and Buchmann ... think I might be doing more than a few subs tonight!

Strange finish tomorrow. Off the top of a HC and then flattens out to the finish. Dunno who to go for.

It was exactly the sort of finish I got Izzy for...sadly...

Breakaway group at the usual 2.30 gap of about ten riders including Mathews going up a mountain.

Knees was driving that group but then SKY has reeled him back and he's now driving the peloton up a cat 2 climb.

I'm keeping a proportion of my nut jobs for tomorrow's stage .... the likes of Pantano might even be in with a shout with those crazy descents but of couse its far more likely we see the big guns in action. The race is transformed in the mountains....such a great watch compared with the boring flat stages.

    Fantastic days racing today....absolutely brill.

It was always gonna be a bit of a lottery today with that stage earmarked a real mish mad of opportunities for so many riders...bring on tomorrow.

I quite fancy Froome to do what he did a couple of years ago with a big downhill push.

Any news on the Demare illness btw?

Yeah, working again unfortunately but really looking forward to the highlights! The gamechanger day today...spent six transfers just bringing back my big guns. As you said they were never gonna be involved yesterday. Still a chance a maverick might get lucky ...just pray it isn't Barguil, Rolland or Gesink...something had to give to get the others back in.

Thanks, you too...I'm gonna pay for my poor transfer management though. Poor team structure initially meant I had to use six transfers to bring back my big three....just didn't see any pont in having a GC rider in my squad yesterday.

Not really tbh, I just use google and skim the first couple of pages for a consensus. What a stage that was. On paper today should be even better. Lets see those GC riders go for it. I have Aru, Martin, Pinot and Yates for today. I read that Demare was not ill but had poor recovery after the two sprint stages.

Froome with a mechanical failure on the final climb but his rivals choose to allow him back on rather than take advantage....apart from Aru who is chastised by the rest of the GC riders.

I don't think either would have rivalled Kittel on stages like that this year. Sagan needs a few hills beforehand and Cav would still be undercooked because of his illness - Demare maybe. The big disappointment has been the decline of Greipel as a valid challenger for me. Kristoff/Bouhanni I'd have expected a bit more from, too.

Really big day coming up lads so don't forget your transfers. Froome is going to follow Aru all the way up the mountains and could nick it at the line.....

"I think the number 1 priority will be to not allow someone to come back on GC and I'll keep a close eye on Aru. I'll stick to him like glue."

Going Froomeless is scary, but he costs way too much.

    RMT.

Roglic, Aru, Bardet, Barguil, Pauwels, Rolland, Calmejane, Uran, Knees....

Looking good...only lacking Martin it what has always been a Froomeless team.

Looks a good team to me, I've brought in Barguil for Pantano so expect a killer race for the latter!....the riders are just on their way, could be wet on the descents! Looks like I need Froome to very well to catch you up...hmmm, not sure about him today.
