West Bromwich Albion made their first signing of the summer transfer window on Saturday, securing the services of Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez for an undisclosed fee, reportedly worth around £12 million.

The 27-year-old put pen to paper on a four-year deal with the Baggies and, speaking to the club’s official website, revealed he hopes to put his fitness issues behind him and play regular first-team football at the Hawthorns:

“There’s a lot to come from me. I am fully over the injury, but for whatever reason, it didn’t work out for me at Southampton last season… It’s true that there is nothing like regular first-team football for that extra sharpness. That’s where you get your form and fitness from; playing regularly is the most important thing. But I’ve come through it and I am lot wiser for it. There’s still a lot more to come from me and I want to continue to improve.”

The History

Rodriguez progressed through the youth ranks at hometown club Burnley to make his professional debut against Bristol City in December 2007 at the age of 18.

He was then sent out on loan to Scottish Championship side Stirling Albion for the second half of the 2007/08 season, scoring three goals in 11 matches.

The young forward featured regularly off the bench for the Clarets in 2008/09, scoring twice in 25 league outings, although in 2010, during the club’s first Premier League campaign, he failed to make a single appearance.

Instead, he went out on loan to Championship outfit Barnsley, scoring once in six matches, before returning to Turf Moor ahead of the 2010/11 campaign with the club back in the second tier.

It was only then that Rodriguez established himself as a regular starter, ending the season with 14 goals and seven assists from 42 appearances, before backing that up with 15 goals and six assists from 37 outings in 2011/12.

His impressive performances caught the eye of several Premier League clubs, and it was Southampton who won the race to sign the forward in a deal worth around £7 million.

Rodriguez enjoyed a strong start to his Saints career, producing six goals and eight assists from 35 league appearances in his first season at St Mary’s, before enjoying a real breakthrough campaign in 2013/14.

He registered 15 goals and three assists in 33 matches, before rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in April 2014 – an injury that would seriously halt his progress.

Indeed, he was forced to sit out the entire 2014/15 season and has only managed 36 league appearances over the past two seasons, registering just five goals and two assists.

Rodriguez featured once for England U21s in 2011 and made his only appearance for the senior side in a 2-0 friendly defeat to Chile in November 2013.

The Prospects

Having tried and failed to sign Rodriguez in two previous transfer windows, West Brom head coach Tony Pulis finally has his man, with Rodriguez now expected to push for regular first-team football.

Capable of playing out wide, in a support striker role or as a centre-forward, Rodriguez will offer plenty of versatility, although, with Salomon Rondon and Hal Robson-Kanu the only other senior forwards at the Hawthorns, he should get plenty of opportunities to feature up front.

Certainly, Pulis was quick to stress the alternatives that Rodriguez presents…

“He gives us different options and that’s important for a club such as our’s – Jay can play in three different positions across the front and that’s good for us. He was exceptional for Southampton out wide and coming in off the line. He also plays as a striker – he’s got these different qualities to play anywhere along the front line.”

Last season, the Baggies played almost exclusively with just one striker, either in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-4-1 formation.

Rondon enjoyed a strong first half of the campaign, scoring seven times by Christmas, before managing just one goal over the remainder of the campaign.

Robson-Kanu, meanwhile, was limited to just five starts and could only muster three goals.

Rodriguez will surely establish himself as a regular starter if he can hit the ground running at The Hawthorns, although Rondon perhaps remains the favoured option to lead the line.

Comparing the trio’s underlying statistics from last season, it was Rodriguez who led the way in terms of threat, averaging a shot every 26.82 minutes, superior to both Rondon (30.81) and Robson-Kanu (42.69).

Indeed, in 2013/14 during Rodriguez’s most prolific season, he averaged a goal attempt every 25.45 minutes, highlighting his Fantasy potential when fully fit and given an extended run in the side.

By comparison, Rondon only managed a shot every 36.17 minutes in his other Premier League campaign back in 2015/16.

More significantly, Rondon has struggled for an end product. He achieved a miserable 8.5% conversion rate last season having scored eight goals from his 95 shots. That was down from an equally modest 12.7 in his debut Premier League campaign.

But Rondon’s numbers may partly be explained by West Brom’s unimpressive attacking statistics.

They ranked 15th for big chances last term, with 45, and second-bottom in 2015/16 with just 42.

The Baggies scored 20 of their 43 goals last season from set-pieces, illustrating their struggles in terms of scoring goals from open-play.

In Matt Phillips and Nacer Chadli in particular, West Brom do have midfielders who should be able to create plenty of chances, but Pulis’ emphasis on team shape and defensive duties can make it difficult for whoever plays in attack to get the support they need.

While Rodriguez was listed as a midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) last season, he may be re-classified as a forward this time around, given the limited striking options at The Hawthorns. Ultimately, that decision could be vital to his appeal as a potential asset – as will how he ranks in price compared to his team-mates.

He should be listed between 6.0 and 7.0 in FPL, and could provide us with a viable mid-price option if he can command a regular starting berth and edge his way back to form.

West Brom’s opening fixtures (BOU, brn, STO, bha, WHM) are definitely favourable enough to hand consideration to Baggies attacking assets, but investing in Rodriguez is perhaps unlikely unless he enjoys a very convincing pre-season.

The hefty outlay made by West Brom indicates that he should gain increased first-team opportunities. But with uncertainty over the position Rodriguez will play, it’s likely most Fantasy managers will be happy to monitor his progress during the opening Gameweeks before seriously considering him as an option.

Is this season to break the template and really invest in defence?

Could premium wing backs offer better value for money than cheap to mid price mids?

I think it's impossible for Swansea to avoid relegation. Bad manager, awful defence and Siggy is going to better club. Maybe they will be even 20th.

Very little evidence that Clement is a bad manager. On the contrary, his brief stint hasn't been bad at all.

Mawson will only get better but I think he needs a decent partner that's for sure. Not convinced Sigurdsson will leave either - big boots to fill if he does, for sure.

Quite simply for me there are at least three worse teams than Swansea in the Premier League.

Can't see how could you be better than all those clubs above you. In some matches last season, Ibra brought you few wins just by his own quality. Morata or any other striker doesn't have that quality and your wingers are poor. Can see a lot of draws for you this season also.

City with Sanchez and 4 decent full backs to be worse than with Sagna, Kolarov, Clichy and Navas? Really? 😛

And Everton with all those decent signings not even in top 7?

City's defence will let them down 😉

Lukaku is one hell of a player to replace, I think they'll take a while to gel.

We literally never had better defence since Sheickh came than this season. And we've got fantastic keeper. Sometimes I have feeling people would say City's defence is bad even if we'd got Neuer, Alves, Ramos, Bonucci, Chiellini and Marcelo there.

Lukaku was pretty useless and invisible in big matches tho.

The way Pep balances his teams your defence would probably still be bad 😀

The goals Lukaku brings cannot be replaced by one player. The other mids will have to contribute more on top of a quality forward to make it up. But I like their two holding mids. I will probably invest in their defence. I may be wrong about Everton's attack struggling at first...

Would love to see Bolasie fit and Barkley to be sold. Really can't stand this guy, awful, awful player and he is presented as some bright talent. Yeah, sure...

With Siggy, Bolasie, Klassen, Ramirez and maybe some other decent striker and with those youngsters, it will be pretty good attack.

If they sign Siggy, I'd agree. But I doubt Swansea will sell.

Btw, I doubt Arsenal will sell you Alexis either. They'd sooner sell to Bayern or keep til January.

But Alexis doesn't want to go to Bayern. His wish is to join City.

And if Arsenal are clever they will sell him now and get some money instead of letting him go for free to us next summer.

Bournemouth finishing 8th would hardly be 'the biggest surprise of the season'. Can't see City winning, buying a few good players doesn't immediately equal success. Too hard to call properly but I think Chelsea will win it again.

You just seem to believe every rumour about City and can't see that they're not a perfect team. Signing Walker and Alves won't suddenly change how many 1v1s the City keeper will have to save to keep a clean sheet.

City are good yes, but buying big names for huge money won't change other issues like tactics.

Look at Man U last season with all the Ibra Pogba Mhki hype.

This could all change within the next 5/6 weeks!

Last season Chelsea had the benefit of no Europe. This season they won't have that and their squad needs strengthening. Right now, their rivals appear to building more than Chelsea although my opinion will likely change by August 12th.

Other than the obvious top six, which other four teams do you think will finish top ten? Mine are probably Everton, Stoke, Newcastle (?) and Bournemouth/Leicester. Still a lot of transfer business to be done though which could sway us

JRod is an interesting one, as there are two factors at play here:

o Will he be playing as a winger, or as a support striker to replace Saido Berahino? If he’s a support striker in the middle, 15 goals and 3 assists (152 points) in his 2013/14 breakout season (before doing his ACL which has disrupted his more recent season) might make him an exciting prospect, which brings us on to…
o Will he be classified as a midfielder or a forward? With limited involvement last term, it’s not unfeasible that FPL towers will leave him at midfield status, with a starting price of 6.0m (he started last season at 6.5m but ended it at 5.9m) likely. This could make him a really nice “out of position” prospect in the mid bracket sweet spot that is much coveted on FPL (think Michu)

Let’s see how this shakes out, but that could be a great signing, with JRod presumably wishing to reinvigorate his career; much depends on on how Pulis sets up his side.

Giving up a spot in your team to a WBA could seriously damage your rank. Their defenders are the best attackers they have

Certainly think it's a punt at best. I'm probably looking at Foster/Myhill as my "fire and forget" 8.5m gk combo, then Dawson as 5.0m - 4 goals a season last 2 seasons, consistent threat but awful on FIFA 😀

        1. Tranny Fan
          • 8 Years
          8 years, 5 months ago

The popularity of the fire and forget gk tactic surprises me. Surely spending .5m more on a pair of rotating keepers yields a much greater return. If the likes of Begovic and Butland come in at 4.5m and rotate well with another then could u be swayed Indi?

Well Mr Tranny Fan I think it comes down to play style for me. I am open to persuasion, but it's always sort of worked for me.

I like to have max value on the pitch personally, which means that 0.5 often really comes in handy in terms of buying a slightly better asset or giving me more flex to pack in more value. I'm not 100% wedded to this, and this year it might not be the case. But I think spending the extra 0.5 on a slightly better player will more than make up having rotating keepers.

Additionally, a lot of it comes down to prior experience, which was when I set up with the rotating keepers I would see the home keeper conceding and the away keeper at least getting saves or maybe even trolling me big time with saves + cs + bonus points. I hate benching points, and my set up is always with my value all in the xi: I tend to have a 4.5 5th mid if in 3-5-2 (think Dazza F) or a 4.5 3rd striker (think Diomande or Big Victor) in a 3-5-2. I then have a 3rd sub of a 4.0 that I write off completely (the cheaper, the better - Lenihan at 3.8 was in my squad for aaages last season) and a 2nd sub of a 4.5 which semi-rotates (at set up, but in practice not really) with my 3rd def. I just like it that way.

I also think goalkeepers are the least important asset: the ceiling is very low. The only explosiveness comes from pen saves, which aren't predictable. So you might as well stick in the cheapest keepers you can and invest up the pitch where things are more controllable in terms of expected output.

TL;DR I could be swayed, but there is method behind my prima facie madness.

I think he will be classed as a mid for some reason we will have to see how he will settle in at WBA.
If he emerged as a Michu type it would be fantastic and he would be just the type to pull it off.

WBA only scored 43 goals last season - just over 1 a game.
      2015/16 they scored 34 goals - less than 1 a game.
2014/15 they scored 38 goals - exactly one a game.

Plus look at their scorers - McAuley, Rondon, Dawson etc. Just not an offensive option unless the defenders score.

In Jamaica you can get a steak and kidney pie for €1.75, a chicken and mushroom pie for €1.60 and an apple pie for €2.15.

In St Kitts and Nevis a steak and kidney pie will cost you €2, a chicken pie (without mushrooms) is €1.70 and a cherry pie can be yours for €1.95.

In Trinidad ,Barbados ,Tobago, and Dominica that steak and kidney pie comes in at €2.50, but you can two for €3.50, while the chicken and mushroom pie is €2.25, or two for €3.25. They also offer meat and potato pie for €2, or two for €3. Their apple pies and cherry pies are often sold for €2.75, or two (any combination) for €4.75.

WBrom have a lot of FPL prospects again this year, for 5th defenders & midfielders in spite of their well documented shortcomings. Foster 4.5, Evans 4.5, Dawson 5:0, will all be popular at the back & Phillips at 5.5, Chadli at 6.0 in midfield, now potentially JRod as a 6.0m OOP midfielder.

John Terry. Goes into Villa as a starter. Will likely take the captaincy as well. What does that say to his existing centre halves (Baker and Chester) and to the existing captain (Chester)? Terry is 36 (will be 37 in December) - hardly building for the future. Did Steve Bruce consider the possible negative impact Terry's arrival could have on his existing defensive partnership?

Fair enough, but it's the most common football joke I know. It's out there in our shared cultural knowledge, so I don't see how my comment was disappointing. Rather, it was probably too predictable. That's the disappointing aspect haha

Sustainability is lacking in this model though. Why not pick up a younger defender who has more years left in them and can stay at the club for a long time to build a solid defensive partnership to take into the PL.

Even if he start only 50% of league games, his effect encouraging and galvanising younger players, not to mention some coaching behind the scenes could be worth a good few points to Villa.

I notice Redknapp has gone out and bought the Barnsley captain - plays in the same position, 33% of Terry's wages and allows Birmingham to buy a couple more players all for the same investment as a year of terry. It will be intriguing to see which Birmingham club finish higher.

Milan bought Hakan Calhanoglu for 18.7 mil. Decent.

Not counting Borini, every other piece of transfers this summerb looked well thought out for cheapish price especially considering todays market. Cant see them giving Juve a run for the money but could be enough for CL qualification.

      Europe needs a good Milan.

Lacazette to Arsenal is almost done. Read from reliable sources that the deal will be done in next 40 hours.

How much will he be priced in FPL? And, what are his prospects?

Lets have some initials discussion. Because, once he moves, FFS will have the Scout Report on him.

I suppose.10-11, and could end up being very good value. Expect his price to go up during the season unless he's injured or rotated with Giroud/Welbeck for some reason

He is a different player than both Giroud and Welbeck. He could be the plan A for Arsenal. Surely, he will be rotated because Arsene equally trusts the other two strikers too.

Hmm not convinced Lacazette would be benched for anyone unless it's a very congested period.

      2. greghammer95
        • 15 Years

It's going to happen. Will be priced between 9.5m and 10.5m, for me he's not an initial option, with the likes of Coutinho/Mane/Alli/Eriksen all probably being a bit more expensive this time around I won't be able to take that initial risk.

I also don't think he's that great a player and certainly not Ibra quality to settle straight away. I won't rule him out as an option over the season but initially I'll monitor.

Might be an option for some but I've been burnt a few seasons by going to risky with signings etc. in GW1, going to play it safe and stick to a similar template to last year but avoid Spurs where possible, I think they'll struggle this season and possibly drop down to 5th or 6th.

Interesting point, how much was Giroud when he first came to England. 7-7.5m?! Then only a small lift after he scored 16 goals a season. SHOULD be bargain basement and priced around 8.5m but I doubt it.

          Lacazette is certainly an upgrade.

His transfer could mean Giroud drops his price by 0.5ish.

With the price that Giroud's been since joining, he should be 8.5 max but can't see that happening.

        I'd predict 9.0 or possible even 9.5.

100 goals in 203 appearances for Lyon says to me he should very much be a contender for our GWK 1 sides.

Surely a sure starter - plus his move could form part of a striker merry go round with Giroud moving to Everton (thereby presenting us with another option) and Lukaku moving to Chelsea.

I've seen him a bit. Lots of pacy running onto through balls (a bit like Walcott) and also some pacy dribbling (a bit like Sanchez). But that's about it - I can see why other top clubs are not too bothered.

OK, just watched his 37 goals in all-competions, and not a single deflected shot in there, so not sure where that came from. Eleven pens. Looks a very confident penalty taker, but one of those who doesn't actually strike the ball that cleanly. Scored from a wide variety of positions. He's got my attention. With the caveat that my granny also looks good on youtube.

I really like to have someone who is assured to play 90 minutes in my GW1 team.
Lacazette could play 70ish minute and get substituted. That's what Arsene does to someone new 😛

Okay, but my comment was in reply to Jonty talking about if Giroud leaves for West Ham. In that situation I could end up with Giroud and Lacazette in my GW1 team. That's the context of my comment. The content is that they both seem undervalued in that context. I guess you disagree in the context that Giroud stays, but it's only slightly relevant.

But to engage you on your point, it is still a big gap of price, and if Lacazette does appear.to be nailed he could be great value as the main goalscorer for Arsenal. Such a situation would be pretty new for an Arsenal forward. We have to wait.for.prices, and maybe performances, but he could be gold

on aguero's debut he got 20 mins and 16 points. if a player is worth having he's worth it in 70 mins.

But then there's worth-having and there's Aguero-worth-having. I've felt confident of Aguero(C) points even when he's come on for the last 20 minutes.

This is also worth considering. Lots of people already showing love for Kun and Jesus and more that will not see 90 mins every week. That's something you have to take into account but it's often not a dealbreaker when choosing someone with the biggest goal threat at any given time.

After the departure of RVP, Arsenal hasn't provided a forward option in FPL.
Lacazette could just be the man.

Averaging 20 goals/season in Europes fifth best league + massively overrated by English media which will lead to a inflated price in FPL= I'll steer clear.

        10.5m

He can't be more than Kane, Aguero, Lukaku, Costa given their records. His transfer fee dictates he is more than 10m

10m could be a justifiable price though. Pogba was 8.5 with his sum too.

Just to put his goal record into perspective because 100 goals in 203 apps is pretty deceptive.

        13-14 15 in 36 apps
        14-15 27 in 33 apps
        15-16 21 in 34 apps
        16-17 28 in 30 apps

Total 91 goals over 133 apps. Goal average 0.68

Would love him as a second round pick in my draft league, not sure if he'll still be available though. Too much of a risk for first choice, I'd feel happier with Kane/Lukaku/Jesus....and even Morata.
If he comes in at 9.5 which some people are suggesting on here though, I think alot of people will punt on him

Latest news (which is only media) Morata wants to go, Real are holding out for a bit more cash, £70m instead of £63m I believe. Mourinho still plans to have Morata and Matic, United players by Sunday when they leave for the states

              Lacazette - I'm guessing 10.0m.

I don't know how he'll fit into the Arsenal set-up. It could be he scores when he wants, or it could be he makes space and lays the ball off for others to benefit. Or he's a donkey, or not ready for 90 mins .... It's a watch and learn for me, and probably not a GW1 purchase.

Surely won't be priced at more than 8.5 considering Slimani and Jesus last season. Giroud starting price was also 8.5 so seems about right. If Giroud leaves, Welbeck could be a decent solution for the third striker role at sub 7..

Why on earth would SKY not open their game up to residents outside the UK?...Surely it's like free advertising for their brand in places they may well have business links in the future (or currently do)....or maybe not.

Either way I can't see any logical reason why they wouldn't.

Surely they could be selective depending on country....or just exempt them from prizes.

Given the popularity of fantasy games worldwide and the fact the game is already available it would seem like free advertising....or at least advertising for very little extra.

Good chance that the winning player would be from outside the current eligible countries and the advertising would mean next to nothing in that country.

Maybe so on both counts but the advertising value comes from everybody playing the game and not from dishing prizes out. If they were having to actually invest in a new product to peddle their brand then i'd agree with you but as it is they simply need to open it up at what, I assume, is negligible cost.

The game launches on Wednesday and can only be played by residents of UK, Ireland, Channel Islands and Isle of Man. Articles should be posted here soon. Can see wenger turning things around if he keeps Sanchez and Lpools defence just isn't good enough, 4th is still a reasonable prediction

Is Everton going to do better? I'm not sure myself. They could equally plausibly be lost in the pack or only slightly emerge in 7th over the rest, for me.at the moment. They need Giroud or similar for a start. Or to keep Lukaku. Not sure what Rooney can do for them.

If Rooney moves and starts there will be no improvement, Tom Davies is a much better option than him. Giroud would be great for them if he moved I think

Yeah, I hope Tom Davies keeps his low price from last season...I'd surely buy him. But not if there's a Rooney-sized speedbump in front of him.

this - they need to replace the goal threat of Lukaku (assuming he goes) , not sure their new players will do that, and Rooney...i just don't get that, no point at all

Cazorla has had a set back apparently, might be out for another season - that's got to be him done at Arsenal.

A shame really, he made them tick.

Xhaka did well towards the end of last season, maybe he can carry the mantle now.

Ramsey did well in the 3-5-2 as well. Suits him as he likes to get forward.

A shame.. Irreplaceable in our midfield.

Xhaka and Ramsey showed some good form in the new formation towards the end of the season so hopefully we can build on that but hopefully we'll buy someone with the Cazorla news. Don't think Xhaka, Ramsey, Elneny and Coquelin is strong enough to get us through a season.

Xhaka and Ramsey work really well in the 3-4-2-1.

I hate to say it but one of them is bound to get injured now ðŸ™

Been a great fantasy player too. Great differential, cheaper than the other Arsenal mids of note. Had some sensational hauls from him prior to his injuries.

If Sanchez goes it could be Lacazette on pens

Ozil with Lacazette in front of him could have a crazy amount of assists

Lacazette should take pens even if Sanchez stays.

Sanchez career pens: Scored 2, Missed 4(!)

              Lacazette: Scored 23, Missed 5.

Anyone else to even compete for them?

If they were in the team then Cazorla/Giroud but guessing neither of them is likely to be in the team.

he was really the one that made our midfield tick, and got the whole team flowing, possibly the most important player in the team when fit, made everyone else better by his influence on the game - a real shame for him and Arsenal
