Hot on the heels of the signing of Spanish forward Sandro Ramirez, Everton announced the arrival of Burnley defender Michael Keane for a fee that could rise to a club-record equalling £30 million.

The 24-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year contract, and becomes the Toffees’ sixth summer signing, along with Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaassen, Nathangelo Markelo, Sandro and Henry Onyekuru, although the latter will spend the 2017/18 season on loan at Anderlecht.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Everton manager Ronald Koeman revealed his high hopes for the England international:

“Michael was high among the players we wanted to bring to Everton this summer, and I’m delighted he is here at the club… I believe there is much more to come from Michael and that’s what makes his signing really exciting for me – we will see his development as a player along with the progression overall… It’s another really positive sign of the direction the club is moving in. He’s 24 years old, his best years are to come, he’s an England international, too, and I couldn’t be more pleased that he’s now a Blue.”

The History

Born in Stockport, Keane began his youth career at Manchester United, and made his professional debut as a substitute in a League Cup tie against Aldershot Town in October 2011.

He was handed a first start in the same competition a year later against Newcastle United, and also started in the next round against Chelsea, before being sent out on loan to Championship side Leicester City.

Keane made 22 appearances for the Foxes, scoring twice, before taking in further loan spells at Derby County and Blackburn Rovers in the second tier, with his spell at Ewood Park yielding three goals from 13 matches.

The defender then joined Burnley on loan for the first half of the 2014/15 Premier League campaign, and joined the Clarets on a permanent basis in January 2015 for an undisclosed fee.

He made 21 appearances during that season, but couldn’t prevent Sean Dyche’s side from avoiding relegation to the Championship.

Keane stayed at Turf Moor, though, and was a key figure in their title-winning season in 2015/16, registering five goals and three assists in 44 appearances, while also being named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year.

Last season, Keane once again starred for the Clarets as they maintained their top-flight status, producing two goals and one assist in 35 matches. He was also among the six nominees for the PFA Young Player of the Year.

Having represented the Republic of Ireland at U17 and U19 levels, Keane switched his allegiance to England, featuring 24 times at U19, U20 and U21 levels, before making his senior debut in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Germany in March on the back of his impressive club form.

The Prospects

After winning many admirers last season, leading to speculation surrounding a potential move to former side United, Chelsea or Liverpool, Keane’s signature represents something of a coup for the Toffees.

The 24-year-old, whose strengths include his calmness in possession and his ability to win aerial duels, should provide a major boost to the Everton rearguard, which has already been bolstered by the addition of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Koeman’s side kept a pretty impressive 13 clean sheets last season, conceding 44 goals – a number only bettered by five teams.

Ashley Williams was the mainstay in defence, making 35 starts, while Phil Jagielka (25 starts) and Ramiro Funes Mori (16 starts) job shared as the preferred partner to the Welsh international

It’s likely that Keane will partner Williams in central defence if Koeman opts for a four-man backline, although he experimented with a three-man defence on occasion.

Looking at the underlying statistics from last season, Keane’s potential impact at both ends of the pitch is obvious.

He claimed fourth overall for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI), with a total of 378 just behind Williams (382) in third spot.

The Toffees’ new boy was number one for successful aerial duels in 2016/17 – a tally of 149 was well ahead of Everton’s best defender Jagielka, with 88. His 65.6% aerial success rate was als higher than any Toffees defender and up markedly on Williams’ 57%.

Ranked third for touches in the box (65) among FPL defenders, Keane registered 22 attempts from inside the opposition area – just three shy of Marcos Alonso at the summit.

Last season, Williams and Jagielka came in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), while full-backs Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines came in at 5.5. Keane’s goal threat could mean he comes in at 5.5 this time around, yet his potential for points at both ends of the pitch could persuade many to earmark him as their weapon of choice in Koeman’s backline.

Should Romelu Lukaku depart Goodison Park this summer, Baines could be in the mix to take penalties, potentially boosting his appeal, although new boy Klaassen is also expected to come into consideration, having scored five of his seven spot-kicks for Ajax last term.

That situation will require monitoring during pre-season, then, along with the issue of who will start at right-back in the absence of the injured Coleman, with Mason Holgate or Jonjoe Kenny potentially providing a cut-price route should Koeman fail to recruit in that position.

But in any case, Everton’s brutal opening schedule (STO, mci, che, TOT, mun) means that there is likely to be little appetite to invest in their Fantasy assets in our initial squads.

The addition of Keane looks a significant coup for Everton, and with Idrissa Gueye and Morgan Schneiderlin in central midfield, there looks real potential for the Toffees to improve on the 13 shut-outs recorded last season.

Those opening fixtures should provide us with the information as to who will emerge as the go-to option, with the impressive Keane expected to be jostling for attention at the front of the queue.

With the amount of nailed strikers who are absolutely central to their teams goals, and wing backs this season, could it be the year for 4-3-3?

Especially with the amount of anticipated midfield hitter price hikes.

Kane Kaku Lacazette Morata and then Giroud if he goes to Everton/Hernandez if he goes to West Ham would all be main focal points.

That doesn't even include the Jesus/Kun dilemma

Three of the first 4 would set you back at least 36m. You can't have 3 off the top shelf without massively imbalancing your squad. The better wingbacks will be top dollar too. You'd end up with 3x4.5m midfielders!

At least? How high do you expect Lacazzette to be priced? Certainly just can't be more than 10 for the first season and at 5th placed club.

Quite simple maths would show you that doesn't make "at least 36m".

I think they could be 36 at max though.

                Kane 14
                Luka 12
                Laca & Mora 10 each

Are about the max they could cost.

Yeh, I'm not going to get into pedantic arguments here. I said 'at 'least', meaning Kane and Lukaku could be more, as could the others. I don't really care as I'm only looking at one top-price striker (Kane) because I'm going for a balanced squad. You can do what you like.

No need to be defensive, just get your ego out of the way!

Looks like Camp No No could get his big hitting front 3 for about £33m. It'll be interesting if the £10m strikers provide better returns than £10m midfielders - history tells us otherwise. But after scraping around for strikers last year, it would be a welcome change to field a competitive 433 line-up (more variation the better).

^This. It's not pedantic, we're talking about building a team and how much everything would cost, and the said forwards would not set us back at least 36m, more like at max that much. Kane + 2 other big hitters is definitely doable.

I'm not saying I'd do it though. I remains to be seen where new strikers are priced, and whether the high-scoring midfielders get the appropriate price hikes. If the strikers like Lacazette and Morata will be priced 10+, and midfielders like Alli, Mané and Eriksen remain under 10 despite scoring more than top strikers for 2 years now, going with a maximum of 2 strikers is an obvious choice. But if they get priced in line (so these midfielders costing about the same as Lukaku, and more than Lacazette and Morata), then it's not said that going with a Kane and a couple of 9-10m priced CF's backed up by smaller team key midfielders would be a bad strategy.

Not for me, I'm thinking of starting with 3-5-2, was very successful last season. Wouldn't want to limit myself to only 3 midfielders.

If there is a decent budget striker for a 3 upfront formation I'd consider 343 or 433, but since I don't think we will find much worth owning below 9m in the striker bracket I'll be looking at 442 or 352 dependant upon how the attacking wing backs are classified and priced.

If we have decent attacking wing backs, priced reasonably and classed as defenders... I'll be going 442 with 2 big strikers.

I think this season will be different from last year in terms of more striker options, in particular a greater range of good forwards across the price ranges.

Last season was all about expensive only with the occasional burst from Defoe, Austin and Llorente.

This season should rumoured moves take place then Arsenal will have a striker....so too West Ham, Defoe at Bournemouth too...the list goes on.

But mids are still gold - not just the expensive ones like Hazard, but at all three promoted clubs arguably their best players - who could be well priced - are mids. Mids will continue to dominate Liverpool points too. Pogba may make the step up this season.

Still too many mid options I think.

3-4-3 very likely to make a comeback. 4-3-3 could limite options too much in midfield.

Do you find 3 up top more attractive than 352 Jonty? I'm seeing extremely limited options for that 3rd striker spot.

I think last season showed we have to be flexible.

3-4-3 was used most often by the top players (HoF) and the winner Ben Crabtree last season, but most also switched to 3-5-2 when there were no good third striker options. So last season when Defoe or Austin dried up or got injured they switched.

that's how I'll play it next season. If there is a good third striker I'll get them.

I do think last season was one of the worst for good third strikers though as all the good ones were expensive.

If there are lots of 6-8m options with at least one scoring regularly at a given time then yep 3-4-3 does look good.

Alot for me depends on whether Arsenal get a striker who is nailed - whether Giroud moves to somewhere where he is nailed, whether Defoe can continue to roll back the years at Bournemouth and whether West Ham sign Hernandez or a n other. Could be lots of good options.

Agreed Jonty, 3-4-3 has been proven to be the optimum starting point but last season proved that the ability to adapt to the fpl terrain can be invaluable.

I was in the top 5k in November but stayed rigid and didn't adapt, put my trust in Llorente (when he wasn't scoring), Carroll even Rondon (Oh! My Days) and paid for it by scraping into the top 40k.

My lesson learnt, I'll certainly be more willing to be adapt. If the upward trend of wing back continues, i could switch to 442, if our cheap forward options dry up again, 352 is the answer.

At least i hop i will anyway....

One factor in favour of 4 at the back is if two or three of the premium players who are hugely expensive prove to be essential.

Kane, Aguero, Coutinho for example could be as much as 35m....then a 6m def who gets forward could be needed over a 8.5m mid.

I've always looked for a 3rd striker at about 6.5-7m, have preferred spending the cash in midfield. This season it will also be tempting to spend extra on wing backs most likely, can't see myself having the cash for Giroud/Hernandez as a 3rd striker, if they move. 2 from Kane/Lukaku/Aguero/Morata will cost around 25m, you'd have thought.

The ~6.5m midfielder bracket looks more appealing to me, with the likes of Knockaert heading the options from promoted clubs, a possibly OOP JRod at WBA, Lanzini (maybe 7m) ... etc.

I'm also hoping Southampton mids come back into the fold after Puels rotation last year. Tadic and Boufal might lose 0.5m from their price if we are lucky. They won't be any pricier for sure.

                that would be good.

Last season the way the prices worked out there were too many of the 8-8.5m mids doing well, the 6-7m were very patchy.

Many of the 8-8.5m mids were already underpriced, and are even more now if they don't get significant price rises.

Likewise 3-4-3 limits options 'too much' in defence. There will be more quality options in that position too. So in summary, there are more options everywhere, if you're right, which means more valid formations and more variation in FPL teams.

Yes, my feeling is this season there will be no template teams and no template formations - all will be more flexible which will make things much more interesting!

All points to 442 then doesn't it? Will still wait to see what is around for 6-7.5m in the striker bracket. Even Defoe and Llorente will face competition now. If JRod is classed as a mid he could be a good option. 352 worked so well because we had plenty of mids playing as strikers... not so sure we will this time around.

442 with two premium strikers and two attacking wing backs from big sides should be possible with at least one premium mid.

It could be an option - but it can make a team inflexible.

Depends on the wingbacks though. Alonso at say 7.5 with cs points could offer better value than a 8m mid or 8m striker.

I'm expecting some rotation though at Chelsea this time around in defence btw.

Well if what I said is right, then it all points to nothing. Only a choice of which players you think will score more, regardless of position, as always, except that this time it may result in a wider variety of used formations. The formation will finally be revealed as the useless first step in conceptualising potential teams that it is. - maybe

Seeing alot of posts on here about formations. There are valid arguments for 352, 343, 433, 442 and even 5 at the back. The biggest factor will be price hikes and value which we simply dont know yet. That said this season has the potential to be one of the most exciting with all the options available.

Seriously though I know everyone thinks he's going and I hope he does but it's far from certain he will. We had all this talk last summer and no one put a bid in for him. The price has gone up, it's over priced, the only people I can see paying it are Utd and it sounds like he's their 4th choice or something. He could well end up staying another year

I rate Koeman ... wasn't happy when you guys got him! Sort of manager that can attract good players too ... what a shot he had on him. Got to think [if he stays] Lukaku's output could improve again with better players to support him.

I'm sure it will. There's a lot of faff talked about Lukaku but it basically boils down to, if you provide him with service he scores goals, problem being he hasn't had enough service. Sure when things aren't going right he can go missing a bit and he's never the one to drag the team through, but if he plays in a team with a lot of creativity he will score goals no doubt. And lots of them.
As for Koeman I didn't really want him to begin with tbh, but after this season I have to say I'm quite impressed. Best manager Everton have had for 20 years I'd say. I know it hasn't translated to league position but you can just see certain improvements in players and tactics and you just know he really is quite good.

As things stand, i think utd are in trouble imo - adding Lindelof to that squad is nowhere near enough. Even adding Morata won't be enough to drive them up the league imho. Last year Zlatan was as good as, if not better than Morata when he was fit... Even if they get Morata, how much can he reasonably deliver, and how soon? 20 league goals? 25? And no guarantees he'll adapt to either Jose's style or the premiership.... They really need a Bale/Ronaldo/Suarez/Neymar/Kane figure... And those guys don't grow on trees.

I could see Jose throwing a hissy fit & fighting with the suits if they don't get one or two A-Listers in soon

I will be very disappointed if they don't sign a striker and DM this window. When it comes to number of goals, the main problem is the contribution from the attacking midfielders. Ideally you want a striker with 20+ goals and a couple of midfielders with 10+ goals. Mkhi, Martial, Rashford, Mata etc. needs to step up this season.

Its not about a listers with mourinho never has been.. he wants those he feels share his hard working personality and wants as many around him he can trust to carry out his instructions. Need the flair too dont get me wrong but a balance is required. Same regarding youth and experience. Growing a bit impatient myself but we will get there in the end with targets. We arent the only side with high ambitions that is still waiting on a strengthening a number of positions either.

I think it'll all work out rosy for mourinho. Pretty sure to sign Morata and Matic, which in turn will help Pogba push on, and I think atleast 1 but probably 2 of mkhi, martial,Rashford will have much better seasons...unless perisic comes in too, could keep those guys quiet, but could be a real hit aswell

I'd hardly be panicking right now.

As for the Morata bit, whether he can perform and settle in the PL is a very fair concern, but Zlatan wasn't as good as him last season whatsoever. It's brushed aside but Zlatan's conversion rate was genuinely rubbish. I love the guy, loved having him at United too and thought he did great given his age, but if Morata came and had a similar conversion rate to what he did in La Liga last season, maybe even a bit less, he's still outscore Zlatan.

So who is everyone worried/looking forward to beating heavily, so far?

Everton's transfer window looks great so far, so does Bournemouths - and the 3 promoted sides look to be spending some money.

For me, Burnley look vulnerable, as does Palace and West Ham.

dont think everton will do well- think they will start slow,
palace have great fixtures starting off and a good manager with good players still there will do well.
      west ham need goals

Im impressed by their transfers but their fixtures are not fantastic to say the least.

I'm not buying palace, lower mid table at best and until they get a decent defence I don't see their attack bailing them out - they are not Liverpool.

West Ham haven't bought one. Hence why I think so far they are looking pretty weak

Sakho likely leaving is huge. The rest of Palaces defence is very poor IMO. De Boer might shore them up a bit. I may get PVA at 5.5m regardless.

Maybe for goal scoring exploits but it even took Big Sam a bit of time before he sorted that defence out.

No sakho and no recruits so far has left them very short.

    Hello all.

Thinking about it more and more, Jesus-Morata could be a very good rotation this season. Home and Away being one thing, but they also rotate well fixture-wise at the start.

That's a mistake from FPL I feel. They need to loosen it up a bit and give us a little more choice at £4.0m. Otherwise you get the silly situation were 30% of teams own someone like Amat for the majority of the season.
