An unprecedented summer podcast arrives following the Fantasy Premier League launch, as Jonty, Andy and Luke join me in the afterglow of a joyous day.

Technically “on the beach” and fighting back to full fitness, we nonetheless brave the airwaves to chime in on the price list, reclassified players and some early formation dancing.

We glory in the potential bargains, lament the overpriced and make bold claims on our lineups that will doubtless be reversed come August 11. If Andy has Chris Brunt in his Gameweek 1 squad, I’ll eat my Free Hit chip.

The FPL Draft game gets a rinsing, and we end the show with our proud declaration of our team ID’s. A conclusion that leaves me feeling rather inadequate even before a ball has been kicked.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Wednesday night. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

If you’re a traditional type, you can acquire the mp3 audio version via this link on the first player below, or take in the full visual experience via the second player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thoughts on this as a first draft?

    Foster (Myhill)
    Lindelof Cedric Dawson Milner (Rangel)
    Willian Sane Mane Alli (McArthur)
    Lacazette Lukaku (Fletcher)

    Cheers

Not seen Jrod in too many drafts. Seems like a decent third striker option at 6m

How is his security of starts with Rondon, Phillips and Chadli? I think all 4 can play but it's hard to see him up front.

      A. Are both nailed on my team
      Kane too would be perfect.
I like Sane think he got some potential but bit over priced with rotation risk in that city midfield.

    Foster (Elliot)

Cedric Tomkins Lindelof (Holgate / Rangel)

    Alli Coutinho Sane Zaha (RLC)

    Lukaku Lacazette Rooney

    How's she looking?

    The case for Mertesacker.

    Kosc 6.0m, Mustafi 5.5, Kolasinac 6.0...... Mertesacker 5.0!

Looking at the great performance of Per in the FA cup final, I think likely that Wenger will play him regularly, again, especially when Kosc and Mustafi doesn't look that solid last season. Any thoughts?

Couldn't care less about that. Not doubting he is a quality young player who will score goals and get assists when he plays. Problem is, he will be constantly in and out of the team.

"Can't see Pep not playing Kun and Jesus together"

Reminds of when everyone said Kun was nailed even before Jesus has joined City. Pep changes his system almost every game, I can't see Kun and Jesus playing together regularly at all.

Is Jesus nailed on? Does he play out wide with Kun on the pitch? Is he off pens?

So many questions and for 10.5 I just dunno,

Also RLC is a risky player to be starting regularly but you know that I'm sure..

      Is Lindehof nailed on?

      Otherwise looks good.

        G.Jesus is 100% nailed - he's Pep's favourite.

Considering Utd's outlay on Lindelöf I'd be confident that he's also nailed.

RLC is the risk like you say. One to keep an eye on.

    3. Andy_Social
      • 14 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

      I've got a big fromt 3 (Kanekaku + Defoe).

I've got 2 drafts behind - strong midfield OR strong defence. In both cases naff all on the bench. IMO, you can't get a proper balance with your front 3. However, your additional problem is if Fabs and RLC don't start, you've potentially got 9 players and nothing on the bench. Therefore, I'd switch Fabs to Lanzini or Zaha, and RLC to a guaranteed starter at 4.5 like Romeu.

      1. Football Weekender
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

Francis looks solid off the bench to me and T.Carroll will always come in for 2 or 3 points.

From what I can make out, Fabregas is nailed for the start of the season but if that changes then switching to Lanzini is an option like you say.

RLC is interesting right now - we'll have to see if pre-season gives any further information on his role & gametime going forward.

I actually like the structure of the team. Having a 4.5 as playing mid does free up cash. And if RLC does kick off his price is only going one way. You know the risks. But I got away with 11 starters and 4 absolute fodder for a lot of last season.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 14 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

That's fine once the season is underway and we know who's nailed on, but at this point I'd want benchies to be playing. This particularly pertains if you have City or Liverpool players with their crowded midfields. With batigol's first XI you can be sure about Kankaku, but Coutinho could play too deep and the others could be rotation risks.

For 8m Defoe looks great, then maybe Tekkers and tbh we don't know exactly where Rooney fits in, might be a bit deeper and we don't know who's on pen's, speculative but interesting.

Trippier fans are assuming Walker walks. If not it's easy to switch to another decent 5.5m.

This. Loads of options at that price range. But City missing out on Alves makes it very likely they'll try to get Walker.

Anyone with me on a 532 or 523 formation?
Last year was 352 as there were so many midfielder I wanted. The midfield value is gone this year.
This year I want about 10 defenders.

      Yes, I'm the crazee with a 5-2-3 - 5 wingbacks in what I call my 0-0-10 formation! 😉

But you'll need 3 decent midfielders and they are pretty expensive. Not sure 5 good defenders are possible.

But if you manage it, it'll be a top team.

        It's all-or-nothing.

5 wingbacks, Kankaku+Defoe up top, naff all in midfield (Sane, Zaha and 3x4.5 benchies)

Yeah but I can't see the value in mids anymore
From GW3 I might look at Ayew or Lanzini
How you think hammers will do this year? I think Bilic is decent and last year might have been a blip?

I expect Hammers to come back strong. Last year in a new stadium, Payet leaving and many new faces coming in, it could unsettle any team.

But this season they'll make a comeback. Bilic will know his best XI by now. They just need a decent forward.

Ah, I've invested 30m in defence - I couldn't go higher than that. I think you might need to pare back, unless you go 2 up top and have 3 starting in midfield in a 532.

      That's a tactical issue. If you have a 5.0 or 5.5 keeper, you'll want a 4.0 benchie.

Or you can go 4.5/4.5 rotation.

9 gets you a nice Foster/Fabianski rotation. 8.5 is pure WBA cover with Foster/Myhill (or take a chance on Elliot as starting 4.0).

I'm pioneering the 523 approach; I'm sure I'll fall flat on my arse but who knows. My general premiss is that a 5.5-6.5 wingback is more valuable than a 5.5-6.5 midfielder.

Remember too that having 5 top def's costs you an extra 0.5 as you have to bump that 5th 4.0 up. In other areas the baseline is 4.5.

lots of options in the 4.5 mid bracket. I've got 3 to sit on the bench, all probable starters. I'd say they're equal in points potential to 4.5 benchie defenders.

Very goood point Netley and about the only thing putting me off 523.
              In theory with a 4.0 , 4.0 defence it's costing me 1 mil extra for 2 fodder spots compare to a 352

If any of these 5-2-3's looked good I'd think about it, sadly they don't appear to be adding any value over a bog-standard 3-4-3, let alone a juicy 4-4-2.

I'm tripling on Saints - Forster/Cedric/Yoshida. I think they're getting a replacement for VVD in which case I'm not sure if Yoshie or Stephens get the spare spot. They're same price to easy to switch to the right one.

Few too many rotation risks in midfield (Willian, Ramsey) for my liking - especially as you'll have a pretty weak bench.

Unless they are absolutely nailed, you might conceivably struggle to field 11 players some weeks?
