Wednesday’s release of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game means we’re now ready to officially launch our Projections and Rate My Team tool. Both have been updated and are available in our Members Area.

Members can get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

Once the season starts, members will be able to enter their FPL IDs to add their current squads. Until that point, squads can be built using the Build My Team feature. Once a team is built, it can be saved and shared by bookmarking the URL.

We will be tweaking this numbers on a daily basis as new players enter the game and as the summer friendlies reveal more on likely starting line-ups and tactics.

Once again this term, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by Chris Atkinson.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies with Chris that talk you through the functionality of the tool and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Access to these tools requires membership and these are available for the pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00). Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

View this page for full details on all our benefits for members.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score in each Gameweek.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data.

When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account and fed into the algorithm.

When will these Projections be updated?
We will update the projections almost each day during pre-season. As we get more data on likely first choice line-ups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season – again, almost on a daily basis, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. Major updates are made on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves.

The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match, with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member, you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. You have a players’ table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL line-up, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers.

How Accurate is Rate My Team?
We’re not going to try and claim that Rate My Team is X% accurate – we’ve never attempted to track a figure, focusing our efforts on keeping the tool up to date to serve those who use it.

Instead what we will say that both Tom Fenley and Simon March were members of Fantasy Football Scout and also used Rate My Team – Tom and Simon were, as many will know, FPL champions in 2014/15 and 2013/14.

We’ve previously created a number of movies, together with the creator of Rate My Team Chris Atkinson, which explain the tools in full detail. You can view these below.

Thoughts on Cahill? Better options for that price (or under)? Already have trippier and Lindelof!

Do we think Chelsea will be good for clean sheets next year? Millers returns are likely going to be- in the main- attacking returns! Liverpool don't tend to keep many clean sheets!

I reckon Chelsea will be good again but not quite match last seasons returns. Where as with Liverpool I can see 3 or 4 more clean sheets.

Cahill best of the Chelsea bunch do you reckon? Or the extra 0.5 for Alonso worth spending?

VVD would definitely make things interesting! A couple of difficult fixtures in their first 5 though, and Crystal Palace and Burnley who seem to be bogey teams for Liverpool... Still every chance for high scoring games and Milner penalties though! He is definitely an interesting option in place of Cahill!

I'd expect lots of CS from Chelsea, but VFM won't make it viable – £6.5m+ is just too much of a bite into the MF as it stands.

A 6.5m defender may well out score a 6.5m midfielder though! I'm going to be going for 3 'premium' defenders this year. Usually I tried and find the budget options @ 4.5m during pre-season, and it never really works out for me....

Money no issue: who would be your top three midfielders to start the season?

There's so much choice at the top: Sanchez, KdB, Alli, Eriksen, Mane, Coutinho, etc.

FWIW, I think my order would be 1. KdB 2. Sanchez 3. Eriksen.

      Sanchez, Alli & Mane.

    3. Strictly to START(i.e. first two matches):

      Alli, Coutinho, Pedro/Pogba

Alli, Sanchez, De Bruyne in that order - sadly, money is a huge issue in this department

Nailedness + attacking intent is important for me. So I would go with:

      1. Eriksen
      2. Pogba
      3. Sigurdsson (if he stays at Swansea)

If Siggy leaves Swansea then I would go with Alli

Surprised to see Pogba mentioned twice here. I know his underlying stats point to him being due, but his goal scoring record at Juve doesn't suggest that being the most advanced of 3 mids (assuming that's what Jose is considering this season) will result in a significant uptick in goals scored as compared with playing in a double pivot. What am I missing?

Mourinho effect to make him like Lampard. Plus nailedness - he will play pretty much every game. May also be on penalties with Ibra gone.

I don't trust Liverpool and City because they have too many options to share the points and some of them (Coutinho, Mane, Aguero etc.) have iffy injury records. Can't score points if you aren't playing.

We all know that non starters are priced at 4 million so by that logic you only have 40 million extra to find 15 players that start. Works out at an extra 2.6 million per player. FPL really needs to throw us a few 4 million starting players to ease our budget pains

Actually, I genuinely might try that this season.

It's balanced but that midfield is just 3 transfers waiting to happen.

Foster and Rodriguez need to go...and maybe Coutinho too. Ayew have couple of difficult fixtures, but might do well this season...

    Guys,

Thoughts on the team .. ?

    trippier / lindelof / dawson / cedric / (rangel)

coutinho / alli / redmond / (RLC, carroll)

    lukaku / jesus / lacazette

Do we think RLC and carroll are good enough for 4th and 5th mids?
For GW 1 im going, 4-3-3

    Tnks

mids are too weak, downgrade a striker and upgrade redmond

      Ur coutinho + Jesus
M going with KDB + firmino
      Wat u think abt mine???

Worth a go (always early WC anyway)

Redmond could be a great pick....SOT #1 for easiest fixtures for many GWs.

What's the situation with Kun versus Jesus then? FFS Projection says one hung but I thought the opposite.....

Disagree completely with the projections. Looks like RMT are worried about Aguero's minutes. If he starts as the central striker then I'm confident he'll outscore Jesus.

1.0 ITB -where to spend it??

    Foster (Myhill)
    Trippier Dawson Cedric Lindelof (4.0)
    KDB Coutinho Willian (RLC) (Carroll)
    Kane Lukaku Gayle

I'm not 100% I'm looking at Benteke bc his opening fixtures arent too bad aside from Liverpool but he does well against them so not necessarily a bad game to have him

Some of it on your benched defender, to make a 4.5.
      Maybe Coutinho >> Mane?

Hi, which is better A, B or C?
    (repost)

    A. Foster Milner, Lindelof, Cedric Alli, Coutinho, Sane, JWP Lukaku, Laca/de Jesus, Rooney

    B. Foster Trippier (if Walker leave), Lindelof, Cedric Alli, Coutinho, Sane, Tadic Lukaku, Laca/de Jesus, Rooney

    C. de Gea Trippier, Dawson, Cedric Alli, Cou, Sane, Willian Lukaku, Laca/de Jesus, Gayle

    Will appreciate thoughts, thx you.

Probably B. I'd prefer it with Dawson instead of Trippier and Defoe instead of Rooney though.

Risky. I always feel it's a squad game, or at least it's better to have playing back up than utter fodder.

Just upgraded my account again now that this tool is live. I prefer to trust my instinct, but when I couldn't decide I found RMT more useful than flipping a coin last season.

Noone concerned that Spurs seem very close to signing Pereira to replace/rotate with Trippier

I'm paying attention to it but still think Trippier will start the season even if they sign him.

How long is Danny Rose out for? Ben Davies might be the better option.
