Brighton and Hove Albion stepped up their summer recruitment drive with the signing of Austrian left-back Markus Suttner from German side FC Ingolstadt 04 for an undisclosed fee, believed to be worth £3.8 million.

The 30-year-old agreed a three-year deal, with Seagulls boss Chris Hughton delighted to secure the services of one of his long-term targets:

“Markus is someone we have been aware of for some time, and I am pleased we have managed to complete the transfer… He has a great level of experience internationally, and in the top divisions in both his native Austria and Germany, where he has played the last two seasons with Ingolstadt, and that experience will serve us well. He will add competition at the back on the left side of defence, and I’m now looking forward to working with him.”

The History

Suttner came through the ranks at Austria Vienna to make his professional debut in October 2008.

He quickly established himself as the first-choice left-back and enjoyed a successful seven-year spell, which included winning the Austrian Cup in 2009 and a league title in 2012/13.

The defender made 260 appearances in all competitions during his time with the club, registering nine goals and 35 assists.

Suttner made the move to Ingolstadt in the summer of 2015 and featured 18 times in the Bundesliga during the 2015/16 campaign, although he failed to produce any goals or assists.

But he enjoyed a far more successful campaign last season, personally at least, totalling four goals and five assists from 31 appearances despite Ingolstadt suffering relegation.

Suttner represented Austria at U19 and U20 levels, making seven appearances, before making his senior debut in a 3-1 friendly victory over Finland in February 2012.

He played 20 times for his country before announcing his international retirement earlier this year.

The Prospects

With Gaeten Bong and West Bromwich Albion loanee Sebastien Pocognoli job sharing at left-back position last season, the addition of the experienced Suttner looks a shrewd piece of business by Hughton.

The 30-year-old was part of the Ingolstadt side, alongside fellow summer arrival Pascal Gross, that managed to survive in their first season in the Bundesliga in 2015/16, eventually finishing 11th. Brighton will hope he can share some of those positive experiences over the next nine months.

Suttner’s strengths mainly lie in his attacking threat, with the Austrian a set-piece specialist, something he alluded to when joining the newly promoted side:

“Last season with Ingolstadt we played with a five-man defence. Now we will play with four in the defence so I think I can’t go forward as much, but when I am there I want to score or make a cross and I hope I can help with my set-pieces.”

He will certainly add to the potency of the Seagulls’ attack, although much will depend on how much freedom he is given by Hughton to push forward down the left flank and whether he can wrestle set-piece duties away from Anthony Knockaert.

Suttner is also a competent defender and is reasonably strong in the air for a full-back, standing at 5ft 10in tall.

Looking at his underlying statistics from last season, he averaged a shot every 63.65 minutes and produced a key pass every 51.64.

Those are very impressive statistics, bearing in mind that Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso averaged a goal attempt every 58.57 minutes and could only create a chance every 112.25 minutes last term.

In terms of Suttner’s bonus point potential, he averaged a clearance, block or interception (CBI) every 16.90 minutes amassing an impressive 92 interceptions.

While centre-back Lewis Dunk is expected to be a Bonus Points System (BPS) darling, having averaged a CBI every 7.73 minutes last season, Suttner’s numbers are reasonable for a full-back and, alongside his attacking threat, offer promise regarding his Fantasy potential.

Despite Suttner’s production last term, he arrived in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) on Monday priced at £4.5m, while over in Sky Sports, he is valued at 5.7, some 1.1 cheaper than Dunk.

That should certainly put Sky managers on alert, while in FPL, Suttner deserves to be considered as an alternative to the identically-priced Dunk.

Hughton’s side were resilient last season, keeping 21 clean sheets. That included 12 at at the Amex Stadium with just 14 goals conceded – a Championship record.

The Seagulls’ early schedule is favourable following their opening weekend visit from Manchester City (lei wat WBA bou NEW). Their home matches certainly catch the eye with West Brom, Newcastle United, Everton, Southampton, Stoke City and Crystal Palace the next six to follow City.

Dunk’s CBI numbers, goal threat from set-plays and 4.5 price tag means he remains the key defensive target to exploit that run. However, Suttner, as a forward-thinking full-back with set-piece duties cannot be overlooked.

Pre-season will be vital in establishing his placing in the pecking order for free-kick duties. Once we are clear on that, we will have a better indication of Suttner’s potential to rival Dunk for our affections.

Appart from Kane, there's a lack of City players, which still surprises me ( I mean, I've seen that in several other RMTs).

There's also the concern about Lacazette and Salah, will they be settled soon enough? I've got both in my team, mind you, but there's that doubt lingering.

People are looking at the first 9 games, or whatever, but I think they should just be looking at the first 3 games - then wildcarding, or at least Wildcarding in the best GWs to maximise the free transfers. Here's why:

    Transfers before Gameweek
    - 1
    0 2
    2 3
WC 4 (International break before GW4)
    0 5
    2 6
    0 7
    2 8 (International break before GW8)
    0 9
    2 10
    0 11
    2 12 (International break before GW12)

Note that if you do your WC in GW3 (during the International break) it naturally fall into place that you have 2 transfers on each of the remaining International breaks. If you do your WC after GW4 you're out of sync for maximum transfers during the remaining International breaks. After GW5 you're back in sync again, etc. If you follow my reasoning I hope you'll see why it's important to select the right GW for your Wildcard. Having the maximum transfers for an International break is much better than having one or zero. Of course, if there's a flaw in my reasoning - I'd love to hear it. Thanks.

Guaranteed your team will need a major overhaul at some point towards the end of the year. What better way to sort that then by using a WC.

Fair play. I wish I had the discipline to last until Christmas. It usually takes all my will-power to last until GW3. 🙂

        1. @FPL_Chess
          9 years, 18 hours ago

...but it still shows me that if I'm going to WC early then it's best before GW's 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10. And not before an odd GW number as that puts you out of sync for the maximum transfers during the International breaks that follow.

Looking to fill a few spots in my fantrax draft league. First come first serve to fill spots. As many leagues as you want really, there is a feature to copy your league so once you set it up once you simply copy pasta to make more.

you can have mods/admins for each league without them necessarily owning a team in the division.

I do it a bit different. I run the draft separately for each division. Then put the divisions under one league to make admining easier.

I also play in another league (Heelsoverhead's) where each division has its own page and there are assistant commissioners who help mod.

Sounds like a nightmare if there are many FFS leagues.
Easier to just use the FPL Draft game even though trading between managers isn't allowed.

not really. sounds a bit complicated tbh, but with the right organization it is doable. Enough people on here with Fantrax experience to run it. I've seen more effort put into some of the community tournies set up.

you played yet? why not give it a try and then tell me what you think

what's the point of draft if there isn't any trading?

I probably won't play the draft unless the mods have one. A draft is only as good as the involvement of the people in it. Need to be active to get new players etc or else you get left behind and the like.

Mods setup league on Dugout couple seasons back. The turnout was immense but too many dead teams. Doesn't matter who sets it up, only who you're playing with.

Same situation likely in Fantrax or the FPL Draft. Collusion is also an issue that the draft avoids.

I agree, which is why I don't see a FFS site-wide draft league working out. Smaller leagues attract people of interest and give those who want to play an opportunity to.

It's going to be a long draft this season. Max 8 hrs per pick. Too many different time zones to do a traditional 'quick' draft. So you dont need to be on for a couple hours to do the draft, just show up when it's your turn, pick, and as you were.

Worked it out as 164, the 6 extra BPS for striker goals meant 6 extra bonus points. FWIW King would have got 165 classified as a striker.

I know it's old hat to you regular readers but I think it's sometimes worth restating the bleeding obvious. This time of the year is when I have to remind myself several times daily.
Kane, at 12.5 is NOT 12.5% of my budget!

Yes, I know 12.5 out of 100 is easy maths but Fantasy Footy plays with your mind.

The absolute cheapest legal team you can pick is 4m for 2 keepers and 4.5m for the other 13. That's a minimum outlay of 66.5m. It's not possible to spend less than that.

So if I've got 33.5m to play with and Harry is going to cost me 8m above the 4.5 baseline, he's using much closer to 25% of my money than the 12.5% that appears obvious.

I'm just using Harry as an example, and a personal reminder not to be fooled by how easy the maths might appear.

I don't bother with the Carol Vorderman maths. I just pick my team until the numbers appear in red and tell me I'm over budget. I'll then adjust accordingly.

You *could* but none of the 4m defenders are likely to play, are they? Even so, the amount of your budget that a player takes up is more than it first appears.

You might get 3 playing. Either way, you need to factor captaincy so the budget is more like 48.5 instead of 36.

The "Harry Kane doesn't score goals in August and September" theory is absolutely crazy IMO

Do people think that on his current form he's not going to score goals on his current form just because he didn't score goals at the start of other seasons?

    Sounds fairly irrelevant to me.

Although I agree that its stupid to suggest he cant score in August/September. Equally thoguh you cant say he is going to carry on that form like it happened last week 🙂
Personally I think he will start scoring from the get go and probably sensible to hame him or at least have 1 mill in the bank to upgrade Lukaku to him

Probably been commented on ad infinitum but I'll add my name to the list.

I managed to contrive to be awake for the United match last night. I can confirm that Pogba was not one jot different last night to the position he played last season.

...and playing in a friendly he would surely play in any new position Mourinho had in store for him either with or without the signing of a new CDM...

    1. Sterling is £11Mill..…

he hit the bar/post a lot last season over nine times. People see those as potential goals. Man U sucked last season in rewgards to scoring, with Lukaku (Pogbas best mate) they think they will link up better. And that Pogba will play more attacking, and less pressure in regards to his enormous transfer fee. I agree Pogba will be better this seasons, but not enough to get him until I see it

    2. NissA
      • 14 Years

Some said it was because they were expected to buy some other player, and he'd play further forward. But anyway, fact remains that they have an easy early schedule, so you'd find it understandable if some might give him ago.

There usually is a United summer hype, like with Mkhi last year, Depay the other year, but that's not the case here, Pogba has already deceived.

Good article. Must admit I hadn't heard of Suttner until 2 days ago but here I am genuinely considering starting the season with him. I actually own Dunk at the moment but this line on the article intrigued me:

"Dunk’s CBI numbers, goal threat from set-plays and 4.5 price tag means he remains the key defensive target to exploit that run. However, Suttner, as a forward-thinking full-back with set-piece duties cannot be overlooked."

    1) What set-pieces is he known for taking responsibility of?
    2) Does this confirm he is nailed?

if he started each week for sure, but he doesnt and he wont. He should leave West Ham, if he plays a false nine at that price he would be awesome

    So currently my team is now;

    Foster - Myhill
    Walker - Cedric - Trippier - Dawson - Rangel
    Alli - Zaha - Pedro - Ritchie - Carroll
    Jesus - Lukaku - Firminho

    But now I'm thinking...

Defoe & Sane for Jesus & Ritchie

    What do you guys think?

I don't like it. I just don't understand having an attacking team and not including City players.

Attack heavy? Is that 100m used or 90m?

      Don't like:
      Holding/ Lidle
      Not sure about Mikki-
      No City cover

Double up on Arsenal not for me...

If I had to go Gayle or Ritchie it would probably be Ritchie to sum up, mainly due to pens

Scored 3 missed 1 in the Champ. More interested in the set pieces with pens as a bonus.

Anyone Considering playing 3-4-3 when palace play at home to accommodate RLC and then sitching to 4-3-3 when palace play away?

Find that Burnley rotate very nicely with palace on Home fixtures for the first 6 weeks or so....

    Palace Home games in GW 1 3 5 are: H'FIELD SWANSEA S'HAMP
    Burnley's Home games in GW 2 4 6 are: WBA PALACE H'FIELD

Managed a draft with a player from all the top 6 clubs. Kane, Lukaku, KDB, Coutinho, Alonso and Ramsey. 3-4-3 / 4-3-3 formation

You can get top 7, but EVE's fixtures whiff a bit.
