Next up in our summer series of team-by-team analysis of the 2016/17 campaign are Manchester City.

We start by checking out the team performance levels over the previous campaign to look for any trends of improvement before assessing the Citizens’ standout individuals ahead of the 2017/18 season.

The arrival of Pep Guardiola helped the Etihad side up their points total from 66 to 78 last term, yet they finished some 15 points off the summit for the second successive campaign, claiming third position in the Spaniard’s first year in charge.

City also improved their goal tally, from 71 to 80, which was again the third best on offer, six behind Spurs at the summit.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Better to double on WBA or SOT def?

    Foster, Cedric + ...

    a) Dawson
    b) Yoshida

Great fixtures are relative to the quality of the side. Chelsea have a great run of games, maybe double down on defence as there will likely be plenty of clean sheets. Mid table sides, less probable

True. Bournemouth has 2 good options, but bad fixtures. I would still prefer them both though. I suppose you're thinking short term because you're thinking of WCing early. Otherwise you could look at Mawson, Maguire, Fuchs and more. If you like Dawson, go for him. Doubling up isn't the issue that people make out if it

They can be avoided by having, say, a Newcastle 4.5 as 4/5th choice. From memory, they have reasonable fixtures (not to mention that Ake and Daniels both provide attacking returns)

Is it madness to go with no city coverage?

Won't be getting kun or Jesus so it's either Kdb or sane.

Kdb seems pricey and sane is a rotation risk esp when champs league begins...

I have none to start with. They are too expensive to have bringing in 10 minute one pointers/sitting on the bench. If Kun goes, I'll have Jesus. But otherwise think United's fixtures make them missable (short term at least)

I've swapped between having them, and going without.

My issue is that I think they will win the league and score the most goals this season. Their attack is wonderful, and will be better this season with better FBs, the inclusion of Bernardo, and a whole year of Jesus.

I wonder if Bernardo could be the way in for those struggling with the budget. He seems a little bit under the radar atm

What exactly is your question? If you're asking if Milner can cover the likes of Coutinho/Mane/etc., or if Walker can cover KDB hauls then the answer is obvious - no.

They are brilliant defencive assets (a bit pricey though), but I dont think there can be suvh thing as 'cover'. A GK can cover a defender and vice versa, cause they share the CS points. Other talks about cover is pointless. Can any city player cover Aguero 30pt haul? Is Alli enough for Kane's hattrick?

Is this on the basis that he's a forward and/or too expensive?

If he gets anywhere near 16 goals as he did last year he'll be great at 7.5m, and having Defoe in the team will increase his assist potential.

    The case for Jamie Vardy

    2015/16 - 24 goals 8 assists - 211 points
    2016/17 - 13 goals 8 assists - 161 points
    Price - 8.5m
Fixtures - ars BHA mun CHE hud
    Selected % - 1.5

Last season points for similarly priced forwards:
    Benteke(8.0) - 136 points (10.5% tsb)
    Defoe(8.0) - 166 points (15% tsb)
    Firmino(8.5) - 180 points (20% tsb)

Even Giroud and Batshuayi, both 8.5 forwards, are higher owned than Vardy. This is something that amazed me. Vardy has a good record against Arsenal, and he faces two promoted sides in first 5 games. I think he will be one hell of a differential option.

Why aren't we seeing Jamie Vardy in templates considering that he could be a good 3rd striker option?

I'm a bit mystified as to why Koeman's signed him. IIRC he didn't really rate him when he was Southampton manager. He probably competes with Holgate for a place, making both 4.5 options insecure.

No Alli, just KDB and Redmond in a 2. I don't know if Jesus will take minutes from Kun, but I know he's a good player and start start most, if not all games he's fit. I think he'll get more minutes than Kun, but I'm not expert. Both could be taken off after 60-70 mins. Luckily Man City will score a ton of goals 🙂

I find it difficult to argue that he is underrated, in terms of his FPL price and reception.

        Kane is 12.5 - 2 more, after 29 goals in 30 games.
Lukaku is 11.5 - a consistent Premier League scorer who managed 25 goals last season, and only one pen.
Aguero is 11.5 and is Aguero.
Jesus comes in at 10.5 - he managed 7 goals and 4 assists in only 651 minutes - he is also one of the biggest talents in world football

Lacazette is small - His goals have come in an easier league, and have included alot of penalties - we do not know for sure if he will take them this season. There might well be a transition period, which is not uncommon even for those who have starred in the league.

I don't see how he is under-priced. I think he should have been valued at 10, and Ozil at 9.0.

With Man Utd being only 8th highest in terms of goals scored last season, could Lukaku be a bit of a red herring?

Whilst he may be in a 'better' team that could provide more chances, it could be argued that under Mourinho Man Utd are less attacking than Everton, relying more on strong defensive abilities, and Romelu won't be the sole focus of attacking threat as he largely was at Everton.
This coupled with being in a more dominant team where there could be less room to use his pace to run into, i'm thinking despite nice early fixtures those significant funds could be better spent elsewhere.

Anyone thinking the same, or opposing views and high ownership winning the battle to fit him in your team?

It's the ownership thing with lukaku

More important to look at how many chances they created last season - and the proportion on which they put away.

Ibra scored a lot - but missed a lot.

Will lukaku be able to increase the goals per chances created ratio is the question

this is true - several players and the manager also more settled in their 2nd season, Mourinho spent a fair while early on restructuring the team, and they were better towards the end of the season even with some Euro rotation - probably best to keep him in my team at the start for the easy opening fixtures, can always change later if it really isn't working

Not worried about Jesus playing on the right, he'll still get chances, more worried about him being subbed off around the 60-70 mark every match. City have so many options off the bench.

    Good day,

    Random question

When you look at spurs attack. It is usually ali, eriksen, kane who are amongst the goals.

When you look at liverpool attack. It could be coutinho, firmino, mane, lallana, wijnaldum, salah, even milner penalty.

Given the uncertainty of which liverpool player will be amongst the points....Wouldnt you be better off not selecting any and instead double spurs where the odds are much higher?

Selecting alli and eriksen would offer high probability that if spurs do score, they are involved....unlike the vast scenarios with the liverpool squad.

    Thoughts?

If Liverpool click and are all fit, they'll score 3 goals per game so everyone will be involved anyway

I've been tackling this same dilemma, whether to get Kane + coutinho/alli but can't bring myself to not cover Liverpool given some of their hauls. I think doubling up like that is the kind of thing you do after a few GWs.

The point about Liverpool puts me off, and in addition they've got CL qual round ties to play around GWs1-2. Spurs have the Wembley factor, so I'm only going Kane from to get-go.

played the 'Liverpool lottery' last season, even more of a lottery this season - will wait and see if there's an obvious option - mane/Couts my favourites if I go that way but will avoid to start

    RMT

    Foster (Elliot)
Trippier | Lindelof | Cedric (Yedlin, Mee)
Willian | Mhiki | Salah | Tadic (RLC)
    Kane | Jesus | Gayle

This team actually leaves 2m ITB but dunno where to spend it or if I even want to.

Guys. What think of this team. This team is built for the first 6 GW`s.. It is a good strategy to use the first WC early. This give you time to analyze the teams and players and at the same time buy players before they raise in price.

    De Gea (Elliot)

    Lindelof - Cedric - Trippier - Mee - (4.0)

    Mane - Alli - Willian - Tadic - (Carroll)

    Lukaku - Jesus - Austin

I have 0.5 ITB so I am considering bringing on De Bruyne for Mane/Alli. I can also bring Gabbiadini in for Austin.

What you guys think? Any other options I can Upgrade for 0.5?

But by the time you've spent that £0.5 you have to wonder how many times he's going to make it into your XI, and then you'll have just wished you had a fodder and an upgraded other player.

Staying off topic, it's worth bearing in mind that West Ham's only fit striker is 4.5m Fletcher.
