Next up in our summer series of team-by-team analysis of the 2016/17 campaign are Manchester City.

We start by checking out the team performance levels over the previous campaign to look for any trends of improvement before assessing the Citizens’ standout individuals ahead of the 2017/18 season.

The arrival of Pep Guardiola helped the Etihad side up their points total from 66 to 78 last term, yet they finished some 15 points off the summit for the second successive campaign, claiming third position in the Spaniard’s first year in charge.

City also improved their goal tally, from 71 to 80, which was again the third best on offer, six behind Spurs at the summit.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I just want to add something. I don't get the "cover" issue. It's about the (combination of) players who score the most points, not about cover. Let's say I pick Sané for City cover, then Jesus scores two with KDB and Aguero assisting. Useless cover.

The only point in cover is if your player scores the points.

    Rant over. 🙂

I think cover is more relevant defensively.

Cover is not a real thing. Just choose the players who will score the most points.

Indeed. It's about picking the right players, not just the right teams, except in the case of clean sheets as mentioned by Unlethal.

Cover is weak as a concept for attackers, but more relevant for defenders.

Exactly my thoughts. In the defence it makes a whole lot more sense.

Willian will be outed once Hazard is back but could be on free-kicks and has good potential overall, whilst Ramsey seems to strive in the new three-back system... Thoughts?

Can I have people's thoughts on this (spent the Sturridge money after being roundly told off for considering him yesterday):

    Foster | Elliott
    Cedric | Luiz | Lindelof | Lascelles | Schindler
    Coutinho | Pogba | Tadic | Alli | RLC
Austin | Lukaku | the Cassette

I wouldn't trust Austin - he's far from nailed as the top striker at Southampton right now, even if his underlying numbers are better than those of Gabbiadini. I'd find the money and upgrade him to one of the King/Defoe/Benteke/Firmino tier of strikers.

    Foster | Elliott
    Lindelof | Trippier | Cedric | Daniels | Rangel
    Alli | Ramsey | ??? | RLC | Carroll
    Lukaku | Kane | ???

    1. Jesus and Tadic/Redmond/6.5
    2. Firmino and Sane
    3. Aguero and Ward Prowse
    4. Austin and KDB

Or something else... 17.0 to spend (4-3-3).

Has it actually been proven that rotating GKs (like a Fabianski / Foster combo) generally outscores an elite GK who you stick with (like a De Gea / Elliot combo)?

The way I see it is you are looking for a squad of 12 / 13 playing players (depending on the rotating GK choice - 12 if not rotating, 13 if rotating) with two duds (e.g. 4.0m def, 4.5m mid or 4.5m fwd) who warm the bench, use little budget and are at low risk of falling in price.

I know Conte loves him but what are your thoughts on Willian ousting Pedro from the starting 11 when Haz is back?

I believe he will, and this is my reasoning:

    - Lost his place when his mother died. Did not return to his usual selfall season which is understandable when coping with a loss like that
    - Imo Willian is the better player on most accounts. Was CFC's best player for close to two years. Can do almost everything and offer more than Pedro.
    - Pedro productivity seemed to be fairly high last year. I would argue he's not able to sustain it.
    - Pedro has turned 30 which is usually a bad thing for explosive players like him.

Ok, I now can't bring myself to drop any of Lacazette, Kane, Lukaku, Alli or Sane... is the rest of the team too weak? Particularly 3rd/4th mids?

    Foster

    Cedric - Dawson - Ake

    Sane - Alli - Mooy - Fraser

    Lacazette - Lukaku - Kane
    -----------------------------------------
    Myhill - Carroll - Lascelles - 4.0

Those front 3 can easily disrupt the balance of the team...
Lacazette is great player but I easily persuaded myself to start without...see how it pens out...easy to bring him in if he hits ground running. Not easy to restore balance of whole team with 2 transfers though...imo...

Your strikeforce makes the midfield too weak - I'd drop Laca. He is more of a risk - he is slight, new to the league, and perhaps less central than Lukaku or Kane if Sanchez stays.

Personally, I'd move to a 4 at the back and upgrade the midfield. It's difficult to have balance with Lukaku and Kane - it's impossible imo with 3 big hitting strikers.

Yep agree - this year I think the key is a balanced side. Too greedy up front. Would drop Laca and upgrade mids.

That strike force is awesome, and nailed top scoring strikers. Personally if your happy with this team I see no reason to change it. Personally I've chosen Daniels over Ake, but I like this team.

I've also gone with Ali & Kane.

      Prefer:

      Fabianski - (Nordfeldt)
      Cedric - Daniels - Dawson - Dann - (Rosenior)
      Sane - Alli - Ritchie - (Carroll) - (Chalobah)
      Lacazette - Lukaku - Kane

Fabianski in goal for save points.

    Hey kids,

    Here's my current XV:

    Foster Gomes
    Alonso Milner Cedric Mee Francis
    Ramsey Tadic Redmond RLC Carroll
    Kane Lukaku Lacazette

So... heavy front line, solid defence, lightweight midfield.

Plan is not to miss out on one of those front three scoring big early doors, and then be able to transfer out whoever is underperforming in gw2 in order to upgrade whichever of my budget midfielders isn't delivering and get in whoever looks good in the City / Liverpool / Chelsea / United / Arsenal / Spurs mids.

If they were midfielders though, they'd kind of be obvious choices - Alonso with certainty of starts in a Chelsea team and good attacking returns last time out, Milner with penalties. They're that much better as defenders. Difficult to look past them in that sense.

Hard to look past Trippier at 5.5m. Maybe for Milner

I hate having a Spurs defender in my team. Reckon their form will revert to the mean this season.

    Hey,

What does everyone think of this lot?

    Foster

    Cedric Trips Lindelof

    Coutinho Willian Alli Phillips

    Lukaku Aguero Benteke

    Elliot Francis Carroll Rangel

Is there any reason why many people aren't going for Aguero? Seems like a no brainer to me, I don't see City not starting the best striker in the league?

He was only benched when he was coming back from injury or during DGW. And Pep was playing Jesus out wide last couple of games of the season with Aguero up top.

Meh for 1m less you can get Jesus who had better point returns when he played and is a guranteed starter

For anyone questioning Defoe, just look at the penalty awards from last season...

    - Sunderland had 5 awarded and scored 5.
    - Bournemouth had the most penalty awards of any team in 10.

Huge potential for Defoe at Bournemouth.

Thanks, he's now nailed in my team. He always does well, and I usually underestimate him.

I was looking for a set piece taker for 6.5m in midfield. Any ideas?
