Next up in our summer series of team-by-team analysis of the 2016/17 campaign are Manchester City.

We start by checking out the team performance levels over the previous campaign to look for any trends of improvement before assessing the Citizens’ standout individuals ahead of the 2017/18 season.

The arrival of Pep Guardiola helped the Etihad side up their points total from 66 to 78 last term, yet they finished some 15 points off the summit for the second successive campaign, claiming third position in the Spaniard’s first year in charge.

City also improved their goal tally, from 71 to 80, which was again the third best on offer, six behind Spurs at the summit.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

everyone would want him if he was nailed on. He's fantastic for attacking points.

Arguably right now he is the only recognised left back at city.

However, they will sign someone, more than likely Mendy. Too short term to consider imo

    Hey,

What does everyone think of this lot?

    Foster

    Cedric Trips Lindelof

    Coutinho Willian Alli Phillips

    Lukaku Aguero Benteke

    Elliot Francis Carroll Rangel

Is there any reason why many people aren't going for Aguero? Seems like a no brainer to me, I don't see City not starting the best striker in the league?

Have you seen their fixtures? And it's Arsenal. Apart from Sanchez, Lacazette is their only decent option. Don't get why people are jumping on Ramsey.

Kane has probably taken the best striker in the league title off him.

He's not a no brainer, because last season Jesus did force him onto the bench for a while.

That said, he has a higher points ceiling than any other striker other than Kane, so it's a real risk Vs reward situation

Yeah I agree with that. I'm just thinking Aguero over Kane because of City's fixtures.

    Defoe or Firmino?
Yes I know, Defoe has got pens and a lot of people don't like Bobby as a striker. However he does play for a shockingly attacking team. Bournemouth are no slouches in that department either...

I'd say Defoe. Liverpool have too many options in midfield that you might as well go for.

Mane out injured, Coutinho possibly playing deeper, Salah unproven and expensive. Mane out of that bunch but I want to see him back in action first.

Liverpool somewhat fixtureproof (in my head anyway) when it comes to attacking prospects, unless it's Burnley away or the like. Will have to keep thinking I guess, still a long way 'til the season starts!

How can you risk not having Kane for someone new to the PL? I think that even though Lacazette could be good (and I'm hoping he is), it is just too risky to go without the prem-proven Kane.

Kane starting slow is bollocks - last season he was injured, and only the season before was he actually nailed to play 90 mins.

Kane essential and this argument is tripe to make people feel better about leaving him out

    Any Suggestions for this draft?

    Foster Elliot
    Milner Trippier Valencia Bertrand
Coutinho Alli Zaha Fletcher Loftus Cheek
    Lukaku Jesus Gayle

4-3-3 Obviously. Never before gone with 4 high priced defender, but feel there is a lot of value this year with attacking full backs / wing backs in teams that can also keep a good number of clean sheets.

Not sure about Zaha. Is Willian or any other 7.0 better?

    Thanks in advance.

Nope. We're presenting facts which will have detrimental effects on his FPL points. Yea he's world class but this is FPL land.

Playing wing and losing penalites will put him back in 15 goal region I think.

Debating whether Kane is essential or not. Which would you prefer to play every week?

    A) Kane + Willian + Ritchie
    B) Gayle + Alli + Eriksen

I've been having a similar dilemma over Kane. On the one hand, his goal-scoring record is impeccable. On the other, there are so many intriguing options (Lukaku, Jesus, Lacazette) that save money while maintaining a premium presence.

I'm still probably starting with Kane, though. Easier to get rid than to acquire.

Probably same situation as with aguero couple seasons back, I can get good cover working a while, until that round he bags 4-5 in one game.

    Any advice on this lot:

    Foster, Myhill,

    Kane, Lukaku, Firmino

    Fairly happy with this:

    Foster Myhill
    Ake Cedric Tripper Chilwell Tuanzebe
Wijaldum Pogba De Bruyne Willian Carroll
    Benteke Kane Jesus

Also, putting it here lets me remember the team I was happy with before I decimate it leading up to the deadline.

Yeah but they don't have a new DM and no other targets apart from Keita who RB don't want to sell.

Plus Can has been linked with the exit and I can't see him starting in front of Wiji regardless.

Ah but he'll either play DM or be cover? The right midfield therefor has to be Lala or Wij? Hmmm... bit risky?

                    • 15 Years
                    9 years, 1 day ago

Yes but that risk is taking into account the rest of my team.

Given the price and the possible returns (see his goals and assists for last two seasons) and the fact there isn't anyone else I want around that price point I see the risk as being worth it.

Thats' saying all that at this stage, the season doesn't start for a month.

Nah too much competition in the Liverpool mids area unless you're Coutinho Mane or Salah

Yes but then I have to choose between those three and even they sometimes rest for Lallana etc...

Had Cout in my team but at this stage think it's better to start with Wiji (if he starts the friendlies) and wait to decide which of those three to get.

Which will probably be Mane and he might not start the season.

What's people's thoughts on actually only really having ten players who are actually worth anything. I can afford ten sick players just getting an eleventh messes it up. Tempted to get a 4.5 mid and hopefully some cheapo like capoue emerges who I can bring in.

I can see the logic, especially since a big hitter can be prone to a run of 2 pointers, so might as well have an enabler, and hope he comes off at some point.

The risk is if you get a couple of quick injuries to your good players and your bench price drops. Can leave you with 9 or 10 starters

I've actually though a lot about this. This 11th player would be RLC, Chalobah, Mee and T. Carroll "rotating". It appeals to me, especially if RLC is nailed. But I might go with my backup option still.

I can't see any obvious reason not to, besides that I think RMT gave me a slightly worse score with RLC as a starter and the money spread. But too much is up in the air to trust those predictions.

The last thing I want to do is to not do it smply because people on here don't want you to try in case you do better than them. If people (or myself) provide decent support against doing it I will heed their advice.

I don't think it's as terrible tactic as most think, like to sum up I can have either ten great players and one 4.5 mid. Or eleven players two or free of which are just average and will score the same points as the 4.5 guy anyway most weeks
