Next up in our summer series of team-by-team analysis of the 2016/17 campaign are Manchester City.

We start by checking out the team performance levels over the previous campaign to look for any trends of improvement before assessing the Citizens’ standout individuals ahead of the 2017/18 season.

The arrival of Pep Guardiola helped the Etihad side up their points total from 66 to 78 last term, yet they finished some 15 points off the summit for the second successive campaign, claiming third position in the Spaniard’s first year in charge.

City also improved their goal tally, from 71 to 80, which was again the third best on offer, six behind Spurs at the summit.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I'm curious, who would you say are the 'big three' strikers that, (money no object), you'd aim to have in your team?

Currently I see them as Lukaku, Kane, Lacazette.

Kun and Jesus are a close second but may be a case of spread of points between those two.

Struggling to pick two of the big hitters up top, and three just ruins the rest of the squad!

I'm going Kane Kaku for now. Tried and tested. Then, by the time one of the others looks like they're essential hopefully a cheap mid will have appeared and the team won't be so unbalanced trying to squeeze three up top

Agreed. I see this as my 'safe' option so far. Only worry is this so called Wembley effect for Kane. My personal opinion is that true quality will show through though, and he'll be bagging again in no time.

Yeah that's about right, try fitting all 3, that's when the 'quality' diminishes elsewhere, yet to see a good one.

I'd agree with your assessment. I might promote Kun to 'A' tier to provide even more of a headache.Kane may be less essential because of trickier early fixtures and the Wembley effect.

I hope Kun moves and I'll have him, Jesus and Kaku, probably.

            Huh? Kun is quality!

I'm going on the assumption that Pep won't sell him anywhere in the prem, so guessing he'll go abroad if he moves.

Money no object, probably Kane, Kaku, Laca, though I'm going for Kane, Jesus, Laca at the moment. Kun probably 5th choice for me, even if money were no object.

Yeah fair enough. Not a fan of the 5-2-3 formation personally, as it's a big risk and it'll require a wildcard or serious surgery if it fails. I agree that there are a few wingbacks that seem to offer some great value (Milner, Alonso, Azpi, Bellerin etc etc) so I'm currently sat on a 4-3-3.

Mid still looks weak for me though so I'm sure it'll change very soon.

Not sure how a formation carries risk. Not sure how a midfield of 2 good players can be weak. Not sure why it would matter if a specific position an a team (e.g. midfield) wasn't the same in strength as another position in the team, if it were relatively weak in the first place. I don't run with your myths! 😛

                  Go on then. Explain it.

Most people on here, for example, have 4.0-4.5 bench players. Why, in my team, do these bench players contribute to having a 'weak' midfield, whereas in other RTMs it doesn't translate into having a weak team in general?

Formation is incidental. I never planned to have 5 at the back it just happened because I think the vaule is better than my best combinations with other configurations.

defenders are more valued if u keep through the entire season..but you dont.

attackers usually have a purple patch and by having an inflexible structure u will spend hits trying to get them in. thus the importance of having a more distributed structure.

defenders are capped at 6.5m while midfielders are capped at 10m which means you will struggle to change your team

                  Whoa, slightly aggressive.

If 4 or 5 massive hitters in midfield emerge within the first few weeks, and teams just aren't keeping clean sheets, you'll suffer. You're kidding yourself if you don't see there being any risk whatsoever associated with playing 5 at the back and 2 in mid.

Also, calling Redmond 'good' is questionable by any standards. I'm sure there's plenty of people on here who would strongly disagree with you there haha!.

Anyway, everybody's entitled to their own opinion, if that's the approach you end up going for then best of luck to you!

Oops got mixed up coz no Grav! Apologies.

Not sure how 4 or 5 massive midfielders emerging puts me at much of a disadvantage. Everyone can only put 1 in at a time, or have to wait for another FT and lose players they don't want.

Also I think it's starge to assume 4-5 midfielders do emerge, or that massive defenders and forwards won't emerge as just as important. We already know that Alli, Eriksen, Mane, KDB, Coutinho, Sanchez etc are going to be massive when they aren't injured, but they are too expensive to own. So they choice to get them is already present, we don't have to wait for them to emerge.

If you're talking more about massive value, then I don't see many candidates. Maybe Sane (though we still won't know he's nailed after 2 or 3 GWs), and Pogba (but he still won't outscore the options we already have, so no need to panic), and Pedro (but again, we already know he's great value). I can see value emerging, but no-one being worth more than the big hitters we already know about.

And then it's really not much effort to downgrade a forward to upgrade a mid. Or downgrade a def by 0.5 to afford Ramsey. But if I make the best pick out of Tadic and Redmond, I'm prepared to play the long game and sit out as much of the 11GWs I can during their great fixtures until I feel I need to WC. Again the waiting game looks good, especially with a playing bench (hopefully/likely).

Finally, we have an opportunity to sculpt our teams as we like just once before we use WCs. I'm happy to go for broke with the best ream I can make for the first part of the season, rather than being tentative with decisions because there might be 3 good value mid-priced mids rather than 2 or 1, or an extra premium option emerging that I wasn't expecting.

We know less about those future situations. I can understand you wish to prepare for it, because it happens every season, but it happens differently every season. The pricing is much different this season to last, for example. The players are different. The teams are different. However when I go into GW1, I hope that I can be sure, for once, that almost all of my players will play most of the minutes and reward my patience with them, barring injuries.

I hope that wasn't a tl;dr job. Sorry again for being snarky with the wrong guy!

If it 'fails' in the first couple GWs. I simply wait until it stops failing. It's a safer bet than playing similar priced mids or forwards that are less likely to score points in general, and less likely to be consistent. IMO

Not saying it's the best 'strategy', but sayin I don't see the risk. I see it as safer, if anything.

This works and, could easily be adapted. I've spent the same on my front 3 and know for a fact that those 3*4.5s rotate adequately for a 4-3-3

Cool, yeah I wanted a City big hitter! Sane could do very well though and Pep loves him. I did have Milner in my team until I replaced him with Trippier when Walker moved on.
I think it's best to start with those three strikers, we need to sacrifice a bit in midfield but seems ok and Tom Carroll could do very well and be on more set-pieces when/if Siggy moves on

Not much in it - but I feel without Kane at least have Ali/Erik, they are likely involved in any Kane output..

Why is everyone picking Cedric over Yoshi? Yoshi was a hero last season.

Is it because he and Stephens are competing for one spot and they're not nailed?

We need to monitor pre season for the preferred 2CB for the new coach (to confirm Yoshi is nailed). I think he'll be nailed, but I'm not the coach. Yoshi was also 4.2M last season when I snapped him so the value was there. Now when both are equally priced I'm swayed to Cedric (although I'm still tempted to swap for Yoshi).

Andrew Robertson's Premier League season by numbers:

    119 crosses
    97 clearances
    55 interceptions
    36 tackles won
    2 assists
    0 defensive errors

Only the first and last matter to me. Can't wait for this lad to eventually shove Milner to the bench. Team yellow teeth.

I really hope some nailed 4s appear during pre season. Giggs mentioned Rosenior as a potential candidate, but monitoring during pre is key as always.
