Tom Ince hits his third goal of pre-season as Huddersfield Town lose in Germany, while a Stefano Okaka strike is enough for Watford to seal their first victory of the summer.

Here are Tuesday’s notes.

SV Sandhausen 3 Huddersfield Town 2

Summer recruit Tom Ince scored for the third consecutive match as Huddersfield slumped to a 3-2 defeat against their Bundesliga 2 opponents.

The midfielder, currently one of only three Terriers players enjoying more than 2% Fantasy Premier League ownership, curled home from the edge of the area after coming on at half-time.

Pre-season goalscoring exploits always need to be taken with a generous measure of salt – Burnley’s Andre Gray (9 goals) being a prime example last summer – but Ince’s form is welcome for those of us looking for an asset to exploit Huddersfield’s kindly start to the season (pal, NEW, SOT, wham, LEI, bur).

Elsewhere, club record signing, Benin forward Steve Mounie, was also on the scoresheet – his second goal in as many matches since his move from Montpellier.

Both goals were set up by Rajiv van La Parra.

The match was rather less memorable for defender Martin Cranie, who was brought on after 54 minutes and promptly had a hand in two of the German side’s goals, including the concession of the penalty that proved to be the difference between the two teams.

Town coach David Wagner again stuck to his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation and made a raft of changes at both half-time and on the hour-mark.

But a number of players remain unavailable to him. Tommy Smith (foot), Nahki Wells (ankle), Jon Gorenc Stankovic (knee) and Michael Hefele (Achilles) are injured, while Aaron Mooy is still on extended leave following Australia’s participation in the Confederations Cup. Meanwhile, Scott Malone suffered a knock and was forced off on 40 minutes.

Huddersfield Town XI: Lossl (Coleman 46); Scannell (J Williams 46), Jorgensen (Edmonds-Green 75), Schindler (Cranie 46), Malone (Lowe 41); Hogg (van La Parra 60), Whitehead (D Williams 60); Kachunga (Billing 60), Palmer (Lolley 46), Quaner (Ince 46); Depoitre (Mounie 60).

Viktoria Plzen 0 Watford 1

A Stefano Okaka goal 10 minutes from time handed Watford their first victory of pre-season.

The striker, currently the Hornets’ only fit first team forward, scored from close range having been set up new signing Will Hughes.

The former Derby County midfielder had been handed 20 minutes by coach Marco Silva to make a good first impression, and he did just that.

Silva again employed a 4-2-3-1 formation in a match in which neither goalkeeper was overly busy, but right-back Brice Dja Djédjé at least caught the eye, coming on at half-time and impressing in an unfamiliar role on the left flank.

Etienne Capoue was again deployed as part of the attacking midfield three behind the striker, with Ben Watson and Abdoulaye Doucouré occupying the roles in the double pivot.

Watford XI: Gomes (Pantilimon 60); Janmaat, Prödl, Kabasele, Holebas (Dja Djédjé 46); Watson, Doucouré; Berghuis (Amrabat 46), Capoue (Hughes 68), Success (Sinclair 68); Okaka.

Good block on the wing by Kolasinac.
Good stretch by Monreal in front of his own goal.

Perhaps this game will finally stop people getting stressed about us assuming that Wenger told us the truth about where they're going to play.

Sanchez on 17.4% ownership but I haven't seen him in many RMTs round here (not in mine either as it stands). What are the main reasons?

    - Uncertainty over his future?
    - £12m too much to pay?
    - More convenient to ignore him as it reduces headaches?!
    - Expected to play out wide consistently and get fewer returns?

The last one is the kicker for me - I'm not an Arsenal expert by any means but I'm expecting Lacazette(/Giroud) to play up top most of the time which I assume means Sanchez will get pushed wide again where (certainly last season) he is less productive.

Not saying it's definitive but the transfermarkt stats are usually pretty good and last season they have him down as having played
Centre Forward, 20 games, 16 goals, 7 assists
Left Wing, 12 games, 4 goals, 3 assists
Attacking Midfield, 6 games, 4 goals, 1 assist

    (Source: https://www.transfermarkt.com/alexis-sanchez/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/40433/plus/0/saison/2016/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/11 )

Those are still good figures from the secondary roles but probably not to the tune of £12m in my eyes.

Also worth noting that Lacazette ought to take penalties off Sanchez who is staggeringly bad at them.

Anyone convinced Sanchez is worth the outlay from the start? If so why?

Like you mentioned, he'll be on the wing mostly. Wenger has already said that lacazette will play up front most of the time. Even if he moves to city, no guarantee he'll be the striker as well

If he moved to Man City I think he'd be even less of an option as there's way more competition for places there.

Indeed. 12m is too much, even for a player of his quality, if he plays on the wing.

Too pricey especially because I think Lacazette will hinder Sanchez's stats.

You think his productivity from out wide will drop if Lacazette plays instead of Giroud?

I don't think he's worth 2.5m more than Alli/Eriksen. The pts difference can be made up elsewhere with the 2.5m.

But if you captain him often he could be worth it. For some reason I've been comfortable doing that though.

Agreed, I think he's pretty poor value all things considered - the only reason to buy would be for big captaincy scores but I expect way fewer of those unless he gets a run up front for some reason and there are no shortage of other captaincy options this year (or so it seems at the moment!)

I agree with your scepticism. For me, more than his position, it is the fact that he is not motivated to stay in Arsenal, therefore not motivated to lead the team yet, with a higher price tag, and a skilled/motivated star newcomer in the team, that leads me to think he will underperform. If I get a 10+ midfielder, it will be de Bruyne at the outset of the campaign, to be changed to Hazard if necessary.

For me it's not even about him being unsettled/having his nose out of joint, I just don't think he's going to post last season's score in this season's position. It's a fair point you make though.

    5. Deulofail

Propably the cover myth. People see Lacazette as better value, and don't want to double up.

Not sure penalties have much to do with it but people do seem to think that that, because the team has been improved by Lacazette, Sanchez will score fewer points, which again seems strange to me.

      1. Deulofail

And as Feyzi says, it's scepticism about his future and motivation. If you believe he will start fresh and normal, I think he could work out as a decent differential for you. He'll score goals...

Coverage has never been something I care about.

My problem is he got nearly 70% of his overall attacking returns when he played centre forward and that was for just over 50% of his games.

His figures elsewhere on the pitch are much less impressive (still good but not worth £2.5m more than Alli/Eriksen as GB points out) and you've got to expect he's going to get way less time up front this season.

I may be biased, but I gotta believe Arsenal will score more gols this year, and Sanchez won't decline. If anything I think 12m is a generous price. But so is 9.5 for Spurs mids and 9.0 for Pool. That extra 0.5 saving is more valuable at a lower price, like getiing £10 off £20 rather than £10 of £100! Haha

You think a wide Sanchez this season will match the centre forward Sanchez last season? Going to have to disagree but of course I'm perfectly prepared to be wrong!

Yep, and that wouldn't be enough for £12m

        Eriksen (£9.5m) last two seasons: 178 + 218 = 396
        Alli (£9.5m) last two seasons: 166 + 225 = 391

Even Hazard is only £10.5m and he averages 381 points as his 2 season total. Take out the crazy bad Chelsea blip and that goes up to 424 as an average 2 season score.

I don't see lacazette score so much(arsenal fan)
And kdb is playing too deep for me

I think Lacazette will score bundles, Arsenal are set up for a mobile striker to score.

Looking for City, Arsenal and Liverpool coverage, which option looks best for first 5-6 weeks:

    A: Jesus, Ramsey, Coutinho
    B: Lacazette, Lallana, Sane

    Both options £26.5m

    Cheers

I still think that 8.0 forwards (Benteke, Defoe) are poor value. Gayle or Deeney at 6.5 could prove better, and 1.5 M would help to improve one of your 4.5 mids to Stanislas/Ince/Ritchie/witchever u prefer.

I think you need a stronger 4th mid option. RLC and Carroll is too weak in my opinion. Agree Benteke to Gayle or Deeney so you can upgrade Carroll to Stanislas if fit.

Bench too weak, but starting 11 looks great! If you plan to WC early this could be perfect 4-4-2 team.

    B) redmond + mkhi

    1. The Hobbit

      A. Mkhi not nailed (yet), Redmond could troll you at 6.5

      And KDB is class. 🙂

Keep going round and round but can't seem to move away from one of these two:

    A (weaker midfield)

    Foster / elliot
    Cedric / trippier / lindelof / yedlin / Rangel
    Sane / Willian / redmond / Phillips / Carroll
    Kane / Lukaku / laca

B (more balanced, no arsenal but could do 5.5 def to 5 and redmond to Ramsey)

    Same Gks and D
    Coutinho / KDB / Willian / Redmond / Carroll
    Kane / lukaku / Rodriguez

Only really like lukaku and lacazette from their teams, Kane feels a must and KDB only one who feels nailed in city.

    A or B? Thoughts?

B is very similar to mine, so I like it. 🙂

Not sold on JayRod, though. I have Gayle for now and my Coutinho is Ramsey at the moment with 1.5 itb. Still not sure what to do with it, maybe upgrade defender or Ramsey.

Already pencilled in Willian to Arnie for GW4. Can see a lot of goals in their games especially if they end up playing Hart at the other end

Chicarito could be a great 3rd striker, Makes Lanzini a better option also.

Great signing if they pull that off.
