Chelsea finally ended their search for a new frontman by acquiring Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid for a reported fee of £58m, which could rise to £70m.

After months of speculation linking him with a switch to Manchester United, the 24-year-old instead becomes the Blues’ fourth signing of the summer following the arrival of Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger and Tiemoue Bakayoko.

Manager Antonio Conte was quick with the plaudits:

“I think for sure he is good signing for us. Morata is a young player who has a lot of experience. He has played with Real Madrid and Juventus and has a lot of experience for the league and also in the Champions League. Morata for sure is a first-choice [for team selection], a good striker and a player with the right prospects for Chelsea. He is very young, for sure he can improve a lot and I hope to show his value with us.”

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Morata was handed his senior debut by Jose Mourinho back in December 2010. That was to be his only league appearance of that season, as he dropped back to the reserves to continue his development.

The forward played a further 36 times over the following three La Liga campaigns, scoring 10 goals, but left to join Juventus in the summer of 2014 after failing to cement a regular role.

Ironically, he was signed for the club by long-term admirer Conte, who then promptly left to manage the Italian national side.

Morata went on to produce 15 goals and 12 assists over his two years in Turin, but once again struggled to cement a spot in the first XI, with 36 of his 63 league appearances off the bench.

Real triggered a buy-back clause in his contract last summer as the striker returned to Madrid in a deal worth 30m Euros. He finished the league season as their second-top scorer, netting 15 times and supplying three assists, but he started on just 14 occasions under Zinedine Zidane, with 12 further outings as a substitute.

On the international stage, Morata has turned out for Spain at every level from U17 upwards, producing 29 goals in 34 appearances. He has notched nine times in 20 outings for the senior side, with his last goal arriving against Colombia in early June.

The Prospects

Having informed Diego Costa that he was no longer part of his plans for 2017/18, Conte looked odds-on to acquire Romelu Lukaku for the Blues’ lone striker role last month.

But the Belgian’s decision to reunite with Mourinho left Chelsea desperate for extra firepower.

Standing six foot two, the physical Morata looks tailor-made as a lone striker for Conte’s tactical approach. Strong in possession and with an ability to hold up the ball and bring team-mates into play, he’s solid in the air – six of his 15 league goals came via headers in 2016/17.

Delving further into last season’s data, Morata fares well when compared with Costa. He was superior for minutes per shot (24.3 to 27.8) and, crucially, also boasted a far better conversion rate, netting 27.2% of his efforts to Costa’s 18%.

In his two seasons with Juventus, Morata was a little less prolific, netting 15.6% and 14.5% of his opportunities.

In spite of his limited pitch-time last term, the new arrival’s average of 88.9 minutes per league goal was far superior to Costa’s 154.5 and bettered only by Harry Kane (87.3) among FPL forwards.

He was also far more dominant in the air, winning 46.9% of headers compared to Costa’s 28.1%. In terms of creativity, Costa had the edge by an average of 73.5 minutes to the new boy’s 78.4.

Morata also affords the Blues a greater mobility up top for Conte’s second season at the helm. The Chelsea manager continues to remain unconvinced by Michy Batshuayi, who once again looks poised to remain a back-up option after being handed a single league start in 2016/17.

Likely to come in around 10.5 in Fantasy Premier League, Morata’s arrival adds yet another premium-priced striker to the mix as the competition for our three-man frontlines intensifies.

But given that Eden Hazard is priced at 10.5 and could also retain spot-kick duties, the Belgian may well remain our go-to option in the Blues’ attack once he’s recovered from an ankle injury around September.

That could be a key factor when comparing Morata with Kane, Lukaku, Lacazette and maybe Jesus – all four of those strikers are expected to be designated penalty-takers in 2017/18. It was a factor that tainted our view of Costa at times and this could also apply to his successor.

Initially, Hazard’s absence allows the likes of Willian and Pedro – at 7.0 and 8.0 respectively – to battle it out for our attentions as a relatively cheap route into Chelsea’s attack for the first few matches. It could also see Morata handed spot-kick duties which, we can hope, he might retain.

Certainly, there’s no doubt that Morata has the potential to make his mark in the Premier League.

Yet with so many alternatives for our Fantasy attacks, and with Hazard’s return another big factor, it remains to be seen whether many will be prepared to take the plunge as Conte’s troops prepare for a testing opening run involving clashes against Spurs, Everton and Arsenal in the first five Gameweeks.

Hands up if you own De Bruyne simply because he is the most expensive affordable midfielder, and you feel a vague need to cover City but you are really not even sure he is the right one. You have doubts about his position and rotation, yet you own him anyway.

Does this sum up the thohts of the average owner. If so give yourselves a slap and put the effort in to find a player not surrounded by doubts who will likely do just as well at a more reasonable price.

Nope. I own him because he's one of the best players in the league and could be the top scoring mid in FPL.

Aha I know where you're coming from - we see him as the most expensive affordable mid and think hmmm he must be good.

But tbf he is good and deserves the price tag...

I have him too, and am slapping myself daily. It feels like I have him for the reasons I gave above. Feels wrong, for 9.5M here should ne more like Alli that you know will give good returns.
There is talk of De Bruyne dropping deeper, rotation issues etc it just feels for that sort of money that something more concrete is called for. I think it probably reflects the lack of options, and if there were a few more he would be in very few sides

De Bruyne is concrete if you stick with him. This talk about him dropping deeper and being rotated came up last season too. Didn't stop him from getting 21 assists and 199 points.

I'm not entirely sure why there is quite so much love for KDB, although I am slightly tinged by having him over their early double and he did sod all.

There was also a lot last year about the fact he plays deeper so isn't worth it. He did have a good end to the season but that was when the team's they were playing had nothing to play for.

Not saying he won't do well, but I think the value is in one of their front 3 (whoever that may be)

His eventual total was reasonable, however he still would have been a difficult player to own. Not many people will put up with 1 point substitute appearances from their most expensive midfielder. It causes frustration, price drops and tests the patience

You were expressing concerns as to why we not supporting a long-time poster. I wanted to demonstrate that I want to show support in the most effective way that I see possible. By talking to that poster one-to-one. Hopefully, I'll get to talk to him and we can chat over it.

That's going to be more effective than demanding answers from moderators who volunteer their time and can't provide all the definitive answers that perhaps people want.

You can see that as arrogant but I don't see it that way. I see it as trying to support that user and listen to his concerns in the best way I can.

I've said before, we're okay with folk plugging their articles within reason - see the guys at Who Got the Assist at the moment. When it's not spammed and when it's done alongside other contributions not linking to the said site then I'm generally fine. Though, yes, that will be at my discretion at times and sometimes my attitude towards it changes. I'm a lot more relaxed about it than I used to be in years gone by but again, that might change.

I've not noticed any "extreme promotion" taking place currently. I might be wrong. I'll look further.

As for cash leagues and multiple teams. I'm not here to uphold the FPL rules or cast judgement on those who get involved in that.

They weren't our leagues or cups (we certainly have rules for those) so I can't be judge and jury on those accusations after the event. If it goes on again and folk feel that FPL, Sky etc should be informed, then I would help to get it investigated. Private cash leagues - it's far more difficult for me to get involved in those. It can be really murky.

I appreciate that both of the above are seen as bad form and I can see why it would cause other users to object and. I totally get that.

However, I still don't think we can be expected to outright ban users suspected or accused of either of the above, or turn a blind eye to posts that appear to target them or attempt to provoke a reaction from them in order to invoke moderation from us.

But perhaps we have to offer tools to help such situations. I'll be talking to WR about the above to get his views and if anyone else has concerns or views, they can certainly email me and I'll try to find time to respond in a similar fashion.

      RTM?

      Foster
      Trippier - McAuley - Cedric
      Redmond - Alli - Coutinho - Sane
      Lukaku - Lacazatte - Gayle
Subs: Fabianski, RLC, Rangel and Mee.

I really want to get Kane. But three Tottenham players would be too much. Do you have ideas like I could build it?

And with Lacazette for 10.5 I would be happy. Then the problem is: Ramsey and Lacaztte? If that works out?

What does your team look like when I ask? 🙂

Ramsey could be Willian/Fabregas too. I'm not set on my team but currently:

                  Foster Myhill
                  Trippier Bertrand Cedric Yedlin 4.0
                  Alli Eriksen Willian Ramsey 4.5
                  Lukaku Aguero Gayle

Think not to get Coutinho? For 9.0 this is a good price. Eriksen, Alli and Kane is bit risky I find.

No Kane 🙂 I don't like that Coutinho is playing deeper and is often subbed early. Would have Firmino if he was a mid I think. Might end up with Mane/Salah over Eriksen.

                          Very hard.

Believe I would rather bring jesus / Lacazette and Lukaku. Goes unfortunately not different. I have at least security in the middle.

Or let the team play Lukaku instead of Jesus.

Anyone else noticed that foreign managers use this "for sure" phrase when they don't quite believe the rest of what they're saying? Perhaps Conte feels he has to defend the signing after wide speculation they missed out on Lukaku.

“I think FOR SURE he is good signing for us." Translation: He wasn't our first choice but we had to get someone as Costa is mugging us off.

"Morata is a player who has a lot of experience." Translation: Morata is a player who has been with big European clubs but has little genuine experience.

"He has played with Real Madrid and Juventus and has a lot of experience for the league and also in the Champions League." Translation: Morata has warmed the bench for big clubs in Italy, Spain and the Champions League.

"Morata FOR SURE is a first-choice [for team selection], a good striker and a player with the right prospects for Chelsea." Translation: We have no other strikers that I'd field in the Vauxhall Conference, never mind the Premier League.

"He is very young, FOR SURE he can improve a lot and I hope to show his value with us.” Translation: We can make some money on this kid. I hope he knocks one in off his arse before long so I dont get asked about Costa.

I will most likely keep willian until Eden returns. Ramsey however could be changed to Sane if I downgrade Chicha (8.0) to Jrod. This also lets me do Pogba to Zaha.

Yedlin has been overtaken by events. Rlc is a not-too-sensible punt. Rangel is just desperate.
        Ramsey - why?
        Miktaryan - ditto?

Dunno how to feel about Sanchez possible PSG move. Best player in the prem IMO and whilst very few have him at the moment it would have been fun to watch the scramble and team demolitions when folk realised that actually Sanchez is a better player than Lukaku and gets more pts.

For me Kane is the best player in the PL. If his name was Thierry Henry we would be lauding him a lot more than we do. Because him (and Alli) are English we think it is too good to be true.

I think Kane is the only person I've seen who I genuinely believe can beat Shearer's record. As long as he stays injury free and keeps playing in the prep. I did the maths and if he plays the same amount of games he will out score him by something like 30

      2014/15- 34 app 21 goals - It was a first season fluke.
2015/16 - 38 app 25 goals - This guy is decent, he'll ease off though.
2016/17 - 30 app 29 goals - This bloke is the real deal.

It makes me feel uneasy without Kane in my side. 7 goals in his last 2 away games last season and starting up against a promoted team, i expect atleast 1 goal at worst. I pity anyone who refuses to put super Harry Kane in their teams.

      [SHITPOST] (repost coz wrong thread)
Pool have CL qualifiers, Klopp gonna rotate, so I'm tempted to avoid entirely
Spurs play on Wembley, so I'm tempted to avoid entirely.
City have Pep who rotates, so I'm tempted to avoid entirely.
Chelsea are missing their main man and now have a new striker that's never played in England, so I'm tempted to avoid entirely.
      Arsenal... Wenger out!

Triple MU+Soton and some players from those teams I can't pronounce FTW!

Why are Liverpool going to rotate early in the season? I think the rotation will happen once the CL proper (group stages) gets going and of course all the big clubs will rotate in EFL Cup and over Christmas.

          • 10 Years

There's a reason for rotation - the qualifiers being early in the season (not much fatigue to account for) is a positive, but there's still a possibility - we can't negate it entirely.

No. The reason the seven towns are called the Potteries, is because of the china produced there. Wedgewood, Spode, etc.. In the 1850's, Stoke was called "The Smoke" - NOT London. 😉

lol, if I did win it I'm sure they might find a way of getting in touch 😉

BTW there's actually a FAQ for this on FPL which might save the OCD amongst us some heartache.

'I've set up a new team, but can't see my history or renew my leagues from previous seasons. Can you link my old account to my new one?'

'Unfortunately, we cannot link your history from an old account to a new one. If you have set up a team for this season using a different email address, you will not be able to view your history from previous seasons on that account.

In order to see previous seasons' scores, you will need to sign in on the homepage using the registered email address and password combination from the previous seasons and set up a team using that account.'

I've changed mine and it is an option to do so.

Surely each account has a unique ID and it isn't email address otherwise you wouldn't be able to change it.

      433
Keep coming back to it, keep trying to deny it
You have to take what is given, and pricing structure says 433 to me
Never played it before, so uneasy
But the team looks best this way

4-4-2 for me at the moment. The lack of mid price midfielders a big factor currently, would prefer to pay for the premium def !

I feel the same way, too much value in defence this season and you cant not go with three premium strikers.
Unfortunately the choice of Midfielders sub £8m is questionable: Willian/Ramsey/Zaha etc

Comes down to Kane vs Alli on how you use your funds.

      https://www.londonnewsonline.co.uk/27262/frank-de-boer-convinced-three-man-defence-way-forward-crystal-palace/

“You think what is the best way to get the best results. You want Wilfried Zaha more up the pitch. If you play 4-3-3, a lot of the time he was playing right-back last year. I don’t want to spoil his talent in defence. Of course he has to do his job, but more up-front when we attack and he has energy to be dangerous to the opponent. We are just three weeks into implementing a new system. It takes time. I think six or seven players made their debut. It was a test of our ideas. It’s important we continue that way and improve that way.”

Interesting read this. De Boer seems very keen to build his team around Zaha. He wants him playing further forward. Fixtures are really favorable too:

      HUD liv SWA bur

Could be a great option. 🙂

433 is very viable this year, no Chelsea pick I'd want atm, Willian short term, Pedro in limbo re pricing, not cheap enough to squeeze in but not better than more expensive mids, Wouldn't take Morata over either striking option. Fair point about no team being able to tick all boxes but it does tick a fair few number of boxes for 100m.

Cheers. Any players you'd suggest to replace them with? Daniels is almost a certainty for me, Beg could go but I don't see many options I'd want. Brom is the most frustrating team around re clean sheets, can see a lot of 1-1 draws happening, wouldn't want to double up on Swans so will just hope for save points in those fixtures from Beg and attacking returns from Daniels

Have you thought about Palace's keeper? Also if Joe Hart is 4.5m then he may be good value.

Will see if FDB can shore up their defence before looking at Hennessey, Hart would be an interesting one but I've heard he was diabolical in Italy, most reckon he'll be 5m though. Sigh has suggested a rotation of Lowton & Lascelles which I like, also allows me to get Fab in goal without a double up.

      3. *sigh*
        • 14 Years

Not bad. I just feel most of the people here going with 4 in defence will bottle it for another premium mid eventually.
For what its worth id go Newcastle/Burnley instead of Newc/Swansea for your rotating 4.5 defenders. i.e. Naughton to Lowton. L00k at the first dozen fixtures for rotation.

        ps. I love you

Yeah ive got Fabianski/Elliott for keepers too aswell as 4.5 Newc/Bur defenders.
Keep an eye on who Newcastle buy however as they may not be finished in defence. They offer good value though with those prices.

Settled on the core of my team now but tinkering has brought up a few tough decisions I'm swayed about, so will ask for second opinions. Which team do you prefer Team A or Team B? (differences are marked with an asterisk)

      Team A - Begovic
      Cedric Daniels Trippier
      KDB Ritchie *Salah *Ince
      Kane Lukaku *Defoe

Subs - Elliott Lascelles T.Carroll *Long (Bur)

In summary, classic 3-4-3, able to catch more bandwagons due to 2x6m mids

      Team B - Begovic
      Cedric Daniels Trippier *Naughton
      KDB Ritchie *Alli
      Kane Lukaku *Firmino

Subs - Elliott Lascelles T.Carroll *Chalobah

In summary, different 4-3-3, able to get Alli & KDB in as well a Liverpool option but slightly less able to catch bandwagons.
