A goal for Jesse Lingard and lots of praise for Anthony Martial as Manchester United see off Real Madrid after a penalty shoot-out of many more misses than hits.

Here are the notes from Sunday’s single pre-season match.

Manchester United 1 Real Madrid 1 (United win 2-1 on penalties)

A decent goal, an almost comedic penalty shoot-out, Ronald McDonald…Manchester United’s friendly with Real Madrid had a little bit of everything, not all of it good.

The best came from Jesse Lingard, who put the Red Devils ahead on the stroke of half-time after brilliant work by Anthony Martial.

Lingard now has a goal and three assists from a pre-season programme in which he has been consistently favoured by Jose Mourinho.

Against Madrid, he played as part of an attacking trio in a 4-3-3 formation, but he has also been employed as a wing-back as the United manager clearly seems to want to feature the 24-year-old heavily in his various plans.

Should he remained favoured once the season starts, the 6.0-priced midfielder could yet attract considerably more than the 0.8% of Fantasy Premier League managers currently with him in their squads.

The same cannot be said for new signing Victor Lindelof (5.5). The centre-half had a torrid time of it after coming on at half-time for Eric Bailly, and his struggles peaked when he gave away the penalty that led to Madrid’s equaliser.

The Swede is not looking comfortable in a United shirt, although Mourinho has yet to play him alongside Bailly – the presumed ideal partnership that has persuaded 16.1% of FPL managers to plump for Lindelof over the proven but pricier Ivorian.

The teams were led out onto the pitch by Ronald McDonald; a farcical start to a match that finished in similar fashion, with just three of ten penalties scored in a penalty shoot-out that even a burger-loving clown would have improved.

By then, Mourihno had more serious issues to chew on, particularly the precious few second-half minutes Ander Herrera managed before going off injured.

The United boss remained relatively upbeat about it post-match.

”I just feel sorry for one more injury which I hope is not important. For Ander to come off after 10 minutes, it has to be painful. But sometimes painful doesn’t mean there is a real problem, so let’s wait.”

And Mourinho was full of praise for Martial, an 8.0-priced midfielder in FPL who has not always enjoyed the public backing of his manager.

”Obviously we want more consistency in his talent. I think today was positive for him, that is why I left him for 90 minutes on the pitch. He was enjoying it, he was trying new things, and it is important in these friendly matches to try new things, which he did. That is important for his confidence. I can say that he is training better than before, he is working harder than before, his ambition is to try to bring his talent in a consistent way.”

United’s eye-catching early schedule – home matches with West Ham, Leicester City, Everton and Crystal Palace and trips to Swansea City, Stoke City and Southampton – almost demand our FPL investment.

Their summer remains hectic, with three more friendlies and then a UEFA Super Cup date with Madrid still to come, but should give us further pointers as to Mourinho’s early-season intentions.

At present, the stock of both Lingard and Martial is in the ascent, while our confidence in Lindelof has suffered a knock.

Manchester United XI: Romero (De Gea 46); Fosu-Mensah (Blind 46), Bailly (Lindelof 46), Jones (Smalling 46), Darmian (Valencia 78); Carrick (Herrera 46 (McTominay 51)), Fellaini, Pereira (Pogba 46); Lingard (Mkhitaryan 46), Martial, Rashford (Lukaku 46).

Keep up to date with all the summer action with our Pre-Season Guide available here.

I think City will get off to a flyer and whilst he plays, they defend well. Only Alonso averaged more PPM than him so I'm willing to give him a go.

If he gets injured, I could easily switch to Utd/Chelsea as their CB issues will be clearer.

Not really. I plan to use that 1m elsewhere. If Phillips doesn't work out, I'm sure they'll be budget midfielders (Fraser) I could move to. I like Zaha, though.

For those needing a 5.5m mid look at Pascal Gross who I haven't seen in any RMT. Plays second striker, created more chances per minute than Eriksen last season and is on right-footed set pieces. Took penalties too, although likely to be behind Hemed or Murray, whichever is on the pitch. Shooting numbers also improved after moving up the pitch last season.

So I currently have a midfield of Salah, Willian, Ramsey, RLC, Carroll. £32.0. Painful, I know.

Any way I can improve it without spending anything extra?

My front three is currently Kane, Lukaku, Jesus. The other option is I could downgrade Jesus and have more to spend in the midfield?

    Any ideas appreciated.

Thinking about fixtures before second international break (up to and including GW7):

    GK: Heaton / Foster
Gives you: BOU WBA STO CPL WHM HUD WAT

DF: Cedric / Lindelof / Trippier / Monreal / Lascelles
Playing 4 at the back gives you:

    GW1: SWA, WHM, new, LEI
    GW2: WHM, swa, sto, hud
    GW3: hud, LEI, BUR, WHM
    GW4: WAT, sto, BOU, swa
    GW5: cpl, EVE, SWA, STO
    GW6: sot, whm, WBA, bha
    GW7: sto, CPL, HUD, BHA

Avoiding top 6 opposition for all GWs.

Can anyone come up with better?

    How important is team coverage?

I ask because I find myself putting players like KdB in my team over the likes of Alli just because I already have Kane and other no MCI players?

    Is this a mistake?

I mean points are points regardless which player/team provides them?
I understand you need to spread risks (especially in defence) but when you purposely dont pick a player that is pretty much guaranteed great points returns are you providing coverage for the sake of it?

To be more specific is "attacking" coverage/risk spreading overrated or is it necessary especially at the start or a season?

    Appreciate you thoughts....

    1. VS10_
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

Ideally you wouldn't care about coverage but at the start of the season I don't think that kind of thinking is too bad when there is no real form for any team/player.

      1. OldBenKenobi
        • 9 Years

Then the key is maintaining flexibility with the coverage? i.e. its easier to go from KdB > Alli than it is Sane > Alli

Now it looks like Sanchez is staying, he starts to feel a bit more essential. Almost impossible to have a balanced team with him, Lukaku and Kane in it (whilst maintaining City and Chelsea cover).

Based on that, what do people think to the below:

    Foster (Elliott)
    Cedric Trippier Daniels (Mee Hunemeier)
    Sanchez Alli Willian Milivojevic (Carroll)
    Lukaku Jesus Austin

1.0m in the bank. Where would you spend it?

    2 Questions:

    1. Monreal vs Trippier
    2. Willian vs Alonso, both attacking but Alonso has CS potential.

    Please choose and give reason:

    A. Kane, Gayle, Sane
    B. Jesus/Laca, Morata, Ramsey
    C. Others, please mention

Already have Lukaku, Alli, Willian and Tom Carroll.

    Thx you.

Out of those I would go with a mixture Kane Gayle and Ramsey and spend the rest elsewhere.

Those three seem assured of thier place. Wenger loves Ramsey (until he is injured)

Probably like many others I have dumped lindelof on the back of this info.

Bailly and Valencia for me assured and I think JM will be his usual cagey self so they should get plenty of clean sheets and play on the counter.

Not sold on lingard yet as I feel he will be rotated depending on the opposition pace on the counter etc
