Our summer series of members’ articles, offering an in-depth team-by-team analysis of the previous campaign, continues with Manchester United.

To get things up and running, we’ll look at the performance levels on a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of the new season.

Replacing Louis van Gaal as manager last May, Jose Mourinho could only manage a sixth-place finish in his first year in charge at Old Trafford.

This was, in part, due to the club’s successful march to Europa League success as Mourinho rotated his side towards the latter stages of the league season.

Despite adding big-name buys such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in attack, the Red Devils netted just 54 times – up five on 2015/16 and only eighth best in the top-flight.

Meanwhile, a total of 69 points was just three more than their haul from Van Gaal’s final year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Is Cedric nailed or not? It's annoying having to pick Dawson and Bertrand instead of Trippier and Cedric because of this uncertainty.

    Triple Spurs anyone?
It's more about spreading the risk and having good coverage for the first gameweek, playing at Wembley is another factor, but their assets all look best options at their price (Trippier, Eriksen, Alli and Kane).

The other factors mainly revolve around the alternatives. I think Trippier is well priced but I'd rather have Bertrand at the same price initially. I think Kane's price is a bit high but that wouldn't put me off if I didn't prefer alternatives. And there's also an issue of squad structure.

Essentially I have no interest in any striker below 8m and the cheapest I'm really happy with is 8.5m. Lukaku is a dead cert for me, so that's 20m already. Add Kane and that's 32.5m which is a bit of a stretch with a 100m budget, especially when I already have the reservations about Spurs already mentioned. I'd rather use the 10.5/10.0 level for my 3rd striker slot, there are at least 2 strikers there I'd be happy with.

So that means one of Alli/Eriksen or no Spurs at all for me probably. But who knows how it will look in 2 weeks?

For the love of all things football, why is Conte so dead set on ruining Batshuayi's career. The kid scores for fun every chance he gets, and yet he still refuses to play him (when Costa was out) and is allegedly persistent on buying Llorente who could practically be Mitchy's dad and has nowhere near as much potential.

    1. Netley Lucas
      • 10 Years

Maybe he thinks he's not ready? He should really go out on loan, abroad, learn his craft.

        • 11 Years
        8 years, 4 months ago

Learn his craft? He was a regular starter for Marseille and scored basically 1 in 2 over 2 years. We played bloody 33m for him and he can't even get a run of starts in cup competitions. Maybe there's something I can't see from the training pitch, but surely he's ready. At 23 he shouldn't be tossed around on loan anymore, we do too much of that crap and end up losing players like Lukaku.

It was the same with Rafa and David N'Gog.
The kid missed every chance he got and yet he still continued to play him
Then he was allegedly persistent in signing Robbie Keane for some reason.

Agreed. I don't even think Morata should have guaranteed starting spot over him. Goals per minute aside, he's never scored as many league goals as Batshuayi had in a season.

    Foster / Myhill
    Trippier / Dawson / Bertrand / S. Cook / Mee
    Coutinho / Sané / Willian / Ritchie / Carroll
    Kane / Lukaku / Austin

    Thoughts?

Not a massive fan of an uber-cheap GK rotation, but it looks like good value for now. Had KDB previously, but ate up funds considering I'm looking at some expensive defenders, hence the switch to Sané. Coutinho & Willian; Kane & Lukaku speak for themselves.

Wary of not owning one of Alli/Eriksen. Monitoring Ritchie/Mee/Austin situations. Steve Cook is a sleeper pick.

Can I ask what the situation regarding RLC is? I don't profess to be at all astute when it comes to price changes (or FF overall for that matter) but surely if you're picking a 4.5 midfielder to just sit on your bench and never play, you'd be far better off picking one with low ownership so that he doesn't plummet your TV?

If RLC doesn't play, he'll drop pretty quickly at his current ownership, no?

How are we so sure Mili is Palace's first choice penalty taker? If Cabaye is playing isn't he in contention? Also Puncheon had taken them before as has (poorly) Benteke.

He took penalties last season and browsing Palace forums they all reckon he's nailed on pens and free kicks. He will deliver points.

Noble was on pens last season as well as free kicks and scored 71 points. Averaging 2.4 points per game. So to me it seems Mili could easy be in the same scoring range which even for a 5m mid isn't great.

        1. fedolefan
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 4 months ago

It's just a pre-season bandwagon because someone has scored a free kick and someone else has 5.0m for a midfielder spot. He was on pens last year too, and while he probably has fks, it may just be the direct ones. You really don't want to be punting on a defensive midfielder to be getting pens and scoring direct fks in a midfield spot. He'll sit on your bench most games and that is arguably 0.5m wasted.

United with better fixtures defensively. If Lindelof land himself a starting 11 position he pose far better prospect than Alonso with Chelsea's opening run of games. KDB is also way better option than Sane.

£8m is a very awkward price too. Mourinho frequented with a Pogba-Herrera pivot in games against *that* sort of opposition last year, potentially leaving three slots in behind Lukaku.

Three of Martial, Rashford, Mhitaryan, Lingard, Mata(?).

He's a bit like Sane. Could get a haul or could get a 3 pointer. There's also not much excitement for some reason from having him in your team. Kinda like expensive bench fodder.

Both are products of their teams I think. The likes of Kane/Lukaku/Kun will score regardless of opposition, Sané/Mkhitaryan require games in which they dominate to score. Different levels of fantasy players.

I dunno, he's great but right now he's playing like a disinterested Ozil. I had him in my team for a couple of days, but that sense of excitement is missing.

He's been great in pre-season. Monitoring closely. Could make the final cut if he looks good in the Super Cup.

What are peoples thoughts on Liverpool. Is it a bad idea to go without any of their players due to worries about rotation? Or is Coutinho good enough to be worth the risk?

I think Phil's position right now is where he is best. A little bit deeper, play-making, he's not a winger or a Mane, let's face it. But he is arguably their best player. Margin? Closes.

probably not fit to start first match

reckon Lallana to play in the middle with Cout further ahead alongside Salah and Firmino

seems like everything goes through Cout atm but Mané the most clinical finisher imo

Coutinho, Salah, Mane, Firmino: all look great for FPL points.
Problem is the same as last season, hopping on and off might be a bad idea.
Sticking with one might be the way to go but only if you commit to it on a long term basis.
That's hard to do of course when playing FPL. I did it with Firmino last season and it was worth it but only when I changed him on a WC rather than arbitrarily.
Same thinking RE Eriksen/ Alli, no point in points chasing, ya gotta be steadfast

I had Firmino throughout last year and must admit that you get VERY twitchy when Mané/Coutinho score but you have to ride it out, end of season numbers will be similar most of the time. Should maybe start taking a similar approach to big hitting strikers so we can juggle our budget assets more often?

This. points chasing unless you are lucky just costs transfer points and most likely the one you transfer out is the one that goes on a roll. Stick to your guns, within limits.

I'll wait and see with Liverpool. Will probably end up missing a haul from Cout or Salah but I'm sufficiently worried about their minutes around the CL qualifiers to give them a miss at the start.

It's balanced. If as per the utd article if Pogba increases his conversion rate and plays in a forward role you could do well. Going without Lukaku is a risk. In general it's best to avoid newbies like Lacazette even if his goals per game in France is nuts.

Would it be fair to say that all those who are picking Man City players are hoping they score enough to make up for missing minutes...because it'll happen...and quite a lot.

Pep isn't buying all these players to start a reserve team...he's buying them because he's gonna be the biggest tinkerman in the prem imo.

I'm quite sure his favoured star (and the fans) is a player I've not seen in any RMT yet and it's David Silva but even he won't be nailed on...

        He won't.

He's buying a fantastic squad that will mean he won't need to play the same players on a Saturday and midweek...it's so obvious what he's doing..

Jesus will play as many minutes as anybody else in the squad...maybe even top for minutes...but he won't play every game.

The fixtures also align for them as well. I would think most people will have these two at the start of the season despite Kan's reputation as a slow starter

He has simply realized how much more difficult it is to balance league and CL in the PL and is paying too much money to get back up players like Danilo for £27M.

That doesn't mean he's going to rotate all the time. Can't see Bernardo Silva being amazing in the PL.

Too much in the defence. There's a strong case for 4-3-3 this season, because of the wingbacks, but you only have 2 of them so it doesn't make too much sense, 5-3-2 is just taking it too far. Who's Quaner? Upgrade him and Chalobah. Morgan isn't nailed either.

They have too many players on the wings, but he can play as a striker or a winger and is one of the best players they have. He got lost kind of, because of the injury and mass signings that aren't really improvements. I prefer him to Lanzini, because he's more of a threat, especially if Lanzini isn't on corners, penalties or free kicks.
