Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, offering in-depth team-by-team analysis are Southampton. A side that carry extra significance ahead of the new campaign given their exceptionally kind early fixtures.

To get underway, we’ll analyse performance at a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements. We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for potential targets ahead of next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

In addition, we’ll also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in this case we’ll focus on the Saints’ home/away displays, investigating a trend that saw them score just 17 goals in front of their own supporters.

Southampton finished in sixth spot under Ronald Koeman back in 2015/16 – a total of 63 points was just three points behind Manchester City in fourth. But the Dutchman’s decision to move to Everton proved detrimental to their prospects, with replacement Claude Puel struggling to maintain those standards.

Despite claiming eight place, Southampton bagged just 46 points and found the net on 41 occasions – a tally that bettered only the bottom five and well behind the 59 strikes under Koeman.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Actually feeling really good about this. Think I'm gonna stick with it...at least for a few days

    Foster / Begovic
Milner / Tripp / Cedric (Tomkins / Mee)
Mane / Alli / Zaha / Ritchie (Carroll)
    Jesus / Lacazette / Rashford

Assuming of course Mane, Milner, and Ritchie are good to go for the start of the season

I would be afraid to go without Kane. Rashford = rotation risk.
Not sure about Milner, find 0,5 somewhere to get Alonso

I think at least having Kane or Lukaku are essentials. They're in most teams, Lukaku in almost half. So when they score, most of your rivals score. They're also capable of scoring double figures, and that makes them ideal for your captain. Jesus and Lacazette are probably your best captain choices, but if Aguero plays, Jesus might not play central and pushed to the wing, unless they play 4-4-2. Hopefully Lacazette doesn't need time to adjust to the premier league, but like Aguero, Giroud might take up a central striking role from what I've seen in pre-season. They'll still score, but not as many if they're not playing as the main striker. Rashford is also not the main striker and a rotational risk, and although Mourinho is looking at playing him with Lukaku, time will only tell if he sticks to it as he usually plays with one striker over the years. Overall I think your team is good. I had most of them in a few of my drafts too, it just comes down to your preference I guess.

What do you think of this 4-3-3 team ? Thx

    Foster (Elliot)
    Yoshida-Trippier-Dawson-Daniel (Hunemeier)
    Alli-Wilian-Zaha (Carroll-RLC)
    Jesus-Kane-Lukaku

Very Tottenham heavy. They must hit the ground running for this to work. First few game weeks are madness. Tripling up on a team is a high risk strategy. But go for it if you strongly believe they will start better than the other top teams.

I noticed that you have also doubled up on West brom defence. Again very risky.

Nothing wrong with triple Tottenham, they are not quite West Brom or Southampton plus each player is dynamic enough to score points in any game.

Dawson and Yoshida could probably do with tweaking or change Foster.

If Rashford is nailed, I like the look of this team :

    Foster
    Alonso Trippier Francis
    Alli Salah Willian Mooy
    Kane Jesus Rashford

    Bench: Elliot Carroll Dunk 4.0

    What do you think?

If Rashford is indeed nailed he is a brilliant pick. Team looks good. Except that like many you have three Tottenham players, which I feel is risky to start the season.

Bertrand and Trippier are very good value at 5.5. Yes, clean sheets and attacking points for full backs are unpredictable but not that much. They both will score much more than any 5.0 pick. Where will you put that 1.0 in attack to justify that lost value.

            1. Live Lad

Ince to Zaha maybe. But like you said I think Bertrand and Trippier will score will this season.

Too much money in defense for me. Not sure about JRod either. The rest looks good.

      1. Coaly
        • 13 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

Why aren't you sure on J-Rod?

Likely to start regardless of formation, good goal scorer, good fixtures

    4. The Sherwinator
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

Personally, I'd try to upgrade at least one or both J Rod and Ince since they'll be in your starting 11 without rotation. If you can get 0.5, You can get Austin/Gayle, and with 1 you can look at Chicharito in place of J Rod. Ince to a Redmond/Tadic for 0.5, or for 1 Zaha/Ramsey/Lanzini. Hopefully pre-season will show who will be starters. Bertrand to Cedric will not have you lose out on clean sheets as Southampton has good opening fixtures, you may get less assists and bonus points than Bertrand in the long run. The same can be done with Alonso for an alternative Chelsea defender.

      1. Coaly
        • 13 Years

Do you think Chicarito and Austin are better shouts than J-Rod?

Thanks mate. I can do defensive downgrades. Bertrand to Cedric and/or Trippier to Daniels. Ince to Zaha in mind. Really not sure about my 3rd striker spot even if I have 7.0 to spend.

Kane, Eriksen and Trippier for me. I don't really see the risk in it. Scored more than any side last season. Conceded fewer than any side last season. Have made practically no changes so there's no learning curve. And of the first eight fixtures, only Chelsea is a worry...and that's not a Stamford Bridge.

Jesus playing further up than Kun but both are pretty regularly dropping back to get the ball. KDB pretty dangerous so far from CM but it feels like he needs someone like Yaya behind him. WBs dont look nearly as attacking as Chelseas but playing a tough opponent so difference priority Id imagine.

This City formation could be FPL gold

    - Wingbacks
    - Jesus and Kun up top
    - KDB in the hole

Ederson already has more saves in this game than Bravo all season.

Can someone tell me how the first 20 went? My ESPN here in Chicago had the Cubs/Soxs game on, so I wasn't able to see.

City was more dangerous, decent chances for both Kun and GJ and some long shots from KDB. Since then it was more or less Madrid playing.

Had one counter attack but other than that both WBs focusing mainly on defence and are nowhere near as offensive as Chelseas.

I'd go for B, I really like Rambo if he'll hold his spot, however Hernandez at 7.0 stirs the pot.
