This evening we roll out the fourth in our series of player list articles focusing on the Fantasy Premier League game.

Having assessed the goalkeepers, budget defenders and mid-price defenders, we now turn our attention to the backline options in the top bracket – costing 6.0 and over.

Certainly, for this sort of outlay, you would expect more than just the possibility of clean sheet returns, with added goal threat and an ability to bring in bonus points also major factors to consider.

In addition, rarely – if ever – would you wish to bench such a costly pick. Rotation is therefore off the table at this price point.

While many Fantasy managers will understandably be keen to seek out budget backline options, there is still potential value to be had in the more expensive bracket.

Last season, the three top scoring defenders in FPL, Chelsea trio Gary Cahill, Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta, all recorded at least 170 points – only eight midfielders and five forwards achieved such a feat.

With that in mind, and with the proliferation of wing-backs throughout the Premier League, the Premium defenders are enjoying something of a renaissance, with many FPL managers considering abandoning the accepted 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 tactic to start the season with a four-man backline.

Inevitably, we have to pay attention to fixtures when investing heavily in a defender.

Assessing the opening schedules, Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia has to be our among our early favoured options.

More expensive than team-mate Eric Bailly (6.5 to 6.0), the Ecuadorian faces just one of last year’s top six in the first nine Gameweeks (WHM swa LEI sto EVE sot CRY liv hud) and was utilised as a wing-back in the recent friendly win over LA Galaxy.

Valencia supplied 41 successful crosses – third among FPL defenders – and also registered 31 key passes, yet brought home a mere three assists.

Those numbers underline that he offers the greatest upside in a defence that chalked up 16 shut-outs in their first season under Jose Mourinho.

So far, though, only 6.5% have chosen to recruit Valencia, with David De Gea (27.3%) and Victor Lindelof (13.5%) proving far more popular at 5.5 apiece.

Over in the blue half of Manchester, City also have a kind opening batch of fixtures – Pep Guardiola’s side host Everton, Crystal Palace, Stoke City and Burnley and also travel to Brighton, Bournemouth, Watford and West Brom in the first 10 Gameweeks.

However, Vincent Kompany’s (6.0) ability to steer clear of injury is a major factor in our assessment of their defensive potential.

The Belgian played all but 14 minutes of the final eight fixtures of 2016/17 and delivered three goals, five clean sheets and six bonus points. If Pep Guardiola prioritises him for domestic matches to manage his fitness, we are confident that Kompany can eclipse new arrivals Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy (both 6.5) as the most profitable route into City’s backline.

Granted, Walker’s total of six assists was more than any other defender last term, but it remains to be seen if he’s employed in a wing-back role by Pep Guardiola.

Nonetheless, over 19.1% have snapped up Walker, while Mendy also has to be a consideration.

As our recent Scout Report revealed, Mendy’s delivery from the left flank was lauded at Monaco, and he has already talked up his ability to provide goals on his arrival at the Etihad.

However, with Mendy currently nursing an injury and with fellow new signing Danilo – priced at 5.5 – available as a rotation option, City’s full-backs both look vulnerable whereas Kompany surely plays when fit.

Six favourable matches (new BUR SWA whm hud BOU) in the first eight also strengthen Spurs’ chances of providing early returns.

Ultimately, though, Walker’s departure diminishes the appeal of his premium-priced former defensive team-mates Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld (both 6.0) along with Danny Rose (6.5), who remains an ongoing doubt with a long-term knee complaint.

Instead, the Walker transfer makes the 5.5-priced Kieran Tripper an almost irresistible prospect for points, both from clean sheets and assists.

Over 19.9% have now turned to the former Burnley man, who claimed five assists in just 12 outings last term. Meanwhile, Spurs recorded 17 clean sheets and conceded fewer goals (26) than any side in 2016/17.

It’s difficult to look beyond Trippier while Spurs continue to stall in strengthening in his position.

Across north London, having failed to claim a Champions League spot, many anticipate that Arsene Wenger will prioritise the Premier League and rest his Arsenal regulars when Europa League matches come around.

This could be good news for the Gunners’ defence as they seek to improve upon last season’s 13 clean sheets – down from 18 in 2015/16.

Laurent Koscielny, Hector Bellerin and Sead Kolasinac all come in at 6.0 apiece, with Bellerin currently the most popular of the three at 13.8% ownership.

Yet the Spaniard is arguably the least promising pick at present as he faces a battle with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for the right wing-back berth in Arsene Wenger’s new 3-4-2-1 formation.

Indeed, Bellerin himself has recently acknowledged how Arsenal’s new system has damaged the security of his starting role.

With Koscielny suspended for the first two Gameweeks, we are currently favouring Kolasinac – who scored three goals and five assists for Schalke last season – to establish himself as the next must-have wing-back.

There are cheaper alternatives to consider at the Emirates, though, with Nacho Monreal and Shkodran Mustafi at 5.5 apiece. The latter’s 20 headed efforts on goal was ranked top for FPL defenders in 2016/17.

Arsenal’s first five home clashes (LEI BOU WBA BHA SWA) look conducive to early investment, as are trips to Stoke City and Watford in the first 10 Gameweeks.

Staying in London, Chelsea boast as many as six defenders in the premium price bracket – somewhat surprising given that they conceded more goals (33) and earned fewer clean sheets (16) than both Spurs and Man United.

When assessing their prospects this time round, the degree of rotation may ultimately determine the most secure targets now that Conte has the Champions League to consider.

It’s also worth noting that only three of the champions’ 16 shut-outs came in the final 16 Gameweeks, suggesting that the cracks were appearing in their 3-4-3 formation.

If we can discount the threat of rotation, Marcos Alonso has to be the stand-out Chelsea candidate even though he’s the most expensive defender on offer at 7.0.

The statistics highlight why.

The former Fiorentina man ranked top for shots (46), efforts in the box (25) and attempts on target (16) for defenders on his way to averaging 5.7 points per match (ppm).

While Chelsea have coveted the services of Alex Sandro from Juventus, Alonso’s role at left wing-back currently looks uncontested. If it stays that way, then he has to remain worthy of the investment with Chelsea’s testing early fixtures the only caveat (BUR tot EVE lei ARS stk MCI).

Cesar Azpilicueta (bonus potential), Gary Cahill (six goals last season) and wing-back Victor Moses – now listed as a defender – all set you back £6.5m and have their upsides.

But it’s David Luiz who is the most popular defender in the FPL game, with 21.4% ownership.

Along with new arrival Antonio Rudiger, the Brazilian is the cheapest Chelsea backline member at £6.0m. Despite scoring once last year, he placed sixth for shots (31) among defenders and could yet prove a stronger value option.

Luiz clearly has merits, but given Chelsea’s early schedule, we may need attacking returns from our Blues defender to eke out early value. Alonso is clearly the most likely to offer that.

Reclassified as a defender this time around, Liverpool’s James Milner has penalty-kick duties to strengthen his appeal as a fire-and-forget option.

Priced at 6.5, at least 1.0 more than any of Jurgen Klopp’s defensive regulars, Milner netted seven times from the spot in 2016/17 and has already converted a penalty in pre-season.

In terms of creativity, Milner boasts a considerable upside – he supplied more key passes (56) and more successful crosses (53) than any defender last season.

Despite earning just 12 clean sheets last term, he would have claimed third spot in the FPL defender listings if classified as a defender.

Essentially, then, like Chelsea’s Alonso, Milner could play huge part in our seasons if he can avoid rotation, though the acquisition of Andrew Robertson (5.0) clearly makes that unlikely.

Milner is currently troubled by a thigh injury which will see him possibly miss Liverpool’s next two friendly encounters. While we expect him to be fit and start as the Reds’ first choice left-back, we are also anticipating that Robertson will go on to make between six-10 starts as Klopp perhaps rotates around European fixtures.

Elsewhere on Merseyside, Everton pair Leighton Baines (6.0) and the injured Seamus Coleman (6.5) also boast lofty price tags.

With Coleman stuck on the sidelines and the Toffees set to face Man City, Chelsea, Spurs and Man United in the first five, many will be side-stepping their defensive regulars until the schedules smiles on them from Gameweek 6.

At that point, the likes of Michael Keane (5.5) and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford (5.0) look likely to emerge as routes into a rearguard which claimed 13 shut-outs in 2016/17.

Bertrand easily outscored Cedric last season 4.4ppg vs 3.4ppg. There is nothing to state that the same won't happen again. Plus Cedric isn't sure to start initially. Simple probabilities state that most 'value' players will disappoint.

My experience is that the overall score can be misleading. You have to look at what is important for attacking returns. Gabbi got most of Cedrics crosses. No wonder why he didn't got so assists

That overall stat is meaningless, look at each category, more crosses, more successful crosses, more chances made ... basic underlying stats are much better ... a little more luck and Cedric could be FPL gold

Bertrand got an extra CS compared to Cedric in 2 fewer games due to luck. Those 2 extra games also happens to be because Cedric got injured.

So Cedric is down to 100 points and Bertrand is down to 119 points in 28 matches. That puts Cedric at 3.57 points and Bertrand at 4.25.

The rest of the difference you can decide for yourself whether you find lucky or not. I would go with Dawson over McAuley at the same price point even though Dawson had a PPG of 0.8 less than McAuley. I would certainly decide to save 0.5 for a 0.7 lowered PPG if I find Bertrands offensive returns to be fortunate.

I am going with Cedric at the moment due to the 0.5 save in value. Only concern is he hasn't reported for the duty and may miss start of the season due to his involvement in the Confederations Cup.

A simple eye test tells you Bertrand is a beast, but 0.5 price difference is off-putting (it's difficult to spend 5.5 on a Soton defender cognitively).

Though if both were 5.0 we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Don't understand this argument at all tbh-yes Bertrand scored more points LAST season. This coming season isn't LAST season. Cedric can easily outscore him and the stats are there for this too. People are picking him cos they think he will/could outscore Bertrand this year.

Me too! I had the biggest nosebleed of all time at the launch of A Fragile Hope during a wall of death. As soon as As the Storm Unfolds dropped my 'friend' stormed at me an back-hand fisted me in the nose. I spent the rest of their set being treated by old ladies upstairs, telling me to tip my head back and drown in my own blood and to get my nose quarterised.

    GK + Defender Combos

(This is in Chapter 8 of Waxys' Fanny Pack btw 😛 )

When it comes to dividing your budget between goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and strikers, every 0.5m saved in defence can help upgrade your attack to a more reliable source of points. As such, the rule of thumb has been to spend as little as possible on a goalkeeper and an equal or greater proportion of your budget on each defender*. The logic behind this is that the points ceiling of a defender is higher than that of a goalkeeper; assists and goals usually outnumber the save points.

If we take a look at an example (2016/17 prices), is it better to have:

    A) Courtois (6.0m) + Nyom (4.5m)
    or
    B) Foster (4.5m) + Alonso (6.0m)

While with A, you have the option of rotating Nyom and playing the fixtures, the disparity of points between a premium goalkeeper and Foster is significantly smaller than a typical 4.5m defender and premium defender. Also, your premium defender should be more assured of starts which tends not to be an issue for first choice goalkeepers, regardless of cost.

    2016/17
    Courtois (171) + Nyom (74) = 245 points
    Foster (113) + Alonso (177) = 290 points

I'm not for a second suggesting you would play Nyom every gameweek, but rotating a defender is an available strategy regardless of whether you've bought Foster or Courtois, and is therefore irrelevant.

Now, this is the key thing; this season is the first season I can remember where goalkeepers have been priced more competitively and first choice defenders have been priced higher. So should this affect our selection approach?

Let's take a look at Man Utd and West Brom - two teams with favourable opening fixtures.

    A) DDG (5.5m) + Dawson (5m)
    B) Foster (4.5m) + Bailly (6m)

Would you be able to pick the best combination of these pairings? It's much closer and I'm inclined to suggest A. Yes, there are Man Utd defenders cheaper than 6m but none that are certain of being played every week. I hope you'll agree this is a fair representation of the pricing this year.

With the above example, perhaps the key concern is that Bailly provides little (if any) attacking threat. However, FPL have been wise to price all attacking defenders with a premium: Alonso, Moses, Cahill, Milner, Walker, Rose, McAuley, VDV, Bertrand, Daniels, etc... even PvA at 5.5m despite the threat of Schlupp and lack of clean sheets. Effectively, we're now being asked a baseline price for clean sheets across all defenders and goalkeepers in a given team, plus 0.5 - 1.0m for the attack minded defenders.

There will always be FPL sides with a 4.5m gk and 4.5m defenders. This is always an option. What my post is raising is that it is no longer an automatic decision to go with a cheap goalkeeper and pricier defender (more so if you're choosing the defender for clean sheets alone).

    * An acceptable exception to this is the 5th defender at 4.0m that is permo-benched.

A, but that's only because Bailly has no assist/goal threat.

Foster + Dawson + £1M spent on attack would outscore A.

        • 16 Years

That's arguable. You're of the opinion that a Man Utd defender/goalkeeper isn't worth it, which is not what I'm discussing 🙂

If you wanted to choose a Man Utd defender, should you go with DDG or one of their defenders?

I'd argue that DDG + 1m beats Valencia, personally.

Over 20% of teams have Bailly and/or Lindelof, so this is definitely relevant.

      +1

An attacking defender (premium) and a keeper in a decent defence is almost always going to pay off over premium keeper and solid CB. I'm of the opinion that cheap in form keepers are always a better pick over their more pricey counterparts.

Both West Brom keepers are a shoe in + 1 or 2 premium wing backs (Alonso / Walker etc), or at least defenders with attacking potential.

          I'd much rather that than pick Cortois and a 4.5m back-up + a 5m risk.

            • 16 Years

            So you're suggesting Foster + Alonso, right? That's 11.5m.

How about Courtois + Dawson and 1m spare? Or Courtois + D.Luiz for the same money? Or Courtois + Bellerin, Baines, Kompany, Toby, etc.

Seriously, the prices are very different this year.

Good analysis! I think the pricing of defenders has been a little harsh this season but I'm glad to see you've made some sense of it here. I don't think I'll be spending as much at the back this year though - funds will probably go further in attack.

I disagree. There are about 8 defenders I really, really want to start the season with, and even more I'm sure I'll want when fixtures change, and even more that I think are good value, but not as excellent as the ones I really, really want! 😀

Cheers, Gnu. I'm riding with DDG as a result of this analysis. I'm sure there will be pressure to downgrade to Hart or Begovic for the extra 1m, but I need to weigh up both sides of that equation. Value for PPM is so key at the start of the game.

He's a tempting pick but that 1m looks better spent elsewhere.
Started at 8.5m combo but quite settled with Hart & Foster.
Like most in my squad noone is assured as yet... nearly no-one.

DDG + Elliott is only 0.5m more than that combo.

Of course, DDG only becomes the value pick if you've opted for a Man U defender in addition to Hart + Foster.

Thinking similar with same example in my team, rotating WBA/Burnley. Planning 433 to include Alonso.

      De Gea
      Alonso Trippier Cedric Dawson Mee
      Alli Willian Mane Loftus-Cheek Carroll
      Lukaku Jesus Austin

Always a 343 but think the value in defence with the question marks over a lot of midfield options makes it the best way to start this year. Not really comfortable with a 5.5 goalie but seems like best security of Man Utd cover.

Great discussion and points raised. Personally I've decided to go down a risky rotation set up for the first six gameweeks as follows:

      GK: Forster (GW 1, 3, 4 & 5) + Heaton (GW 2 & 6)

      DEF: Cedric & Dawson - (GW 1 - 6)

      GW 1: Tripper 3-4-3
      GW 2: Mee & Lowton 4-3-3
      GW 3: Tripper, 3-4-3
      GW 4: Mee & Lowton 4-3-3
      GW 5: Tripper 3-4-3

Nice discussion. As you said, though, Bailly is the problem there. I just never considered him at 6.0, not even Lindelof at 5.5. If it were:

      A) DDG (5.5m) + Dawson (5m)
      B) Foster (4.5m) + Kolasinac (6m)

I would personally say B hands down. It's also hard to predict if a GK will do well or not. Foster didn't do very well last year, but maybe he will this year. (Actually I'm not convinced he will, so I've selected Fabianski at this present moment!)

      Very good post 🙂

I think there's also a strategy where you pick DDG for the first 8 or so gameweeks (with a 4.0, maybe Elliot) and then use a transfer to switch to another premium keeper with fixtures; counting on a keeper transfer every 8 weeks doesn't seem too difficult to pull off.

I will still do two 4.5m keepers and a relatively cheap defence (I rarely start with anyone over 5.5m, some seasons no one over 5m. I don't trust teams to keep CSs at the beginning of the season

I tend not to think much about ownership, not sure if that's a good or bad thing.
Does factor in all things being equal.
Dunno mate I'm leaning towards the lukaku and ince now. Keep going back and forth on this one.

You are a better player than me (atm 😉 ), so you should give me advice

If you couldn't tell already - I'm a big fan of ownership. That doesn't mean having only highly owned players. It's more of a tactic of striking the right balance. That balance to me includes owning people like Lukaku so you're always "with the pack", while owning differentials to separate yourself from the pack

But like I said, you're a seasoned player and know more than me, so you'd know better

Na so many ways to skin a cat mate. And I've probably just been lucky. I was shit last season too so maybe I peaked lol.
You are right and it's probably a weakness of mine. I do factor ownership but only when I think points potential, value etc is close to even.

Like with aguero. Not much between him Kane and lukaku early doors so I guess the low ownership makes the (c) even more appealing. It's like spotting a bet that the bookies have screwed up on pricing.

My theory on why your rank is fluctuating is because of ownership. You have been great at predicting top differentials, which has led you to such high ranks. Your differentials probably often outscored the higher owned players

But, you have a life and other commitments to give your attention to, so you can't always study football to get those quality picks. Thus, the highly owned players outscored your differential team

Again, just a theory I have

Well look at it this way

Played 26/7 and was on 156 points
              Liverpool were freescoring
              He was their main man
At a point last year we were cramming 3 pool into our teams

If he stays fit, personally I think he's up there. I can see Pool scoring a lot again.

Kane and lukaku will be up there for golden boot hence why both will be in the majority of fpl teams.

For midfield i think it's anyone's game but if Sanchez stays he could be the up there (despite not being in my team or many for that matter) others include KDB, Alli, Salah, Mane, Ozil to name a few

Is this absolutely shocking as a draft team or is it worth sticking it out

I was 15th out of 16 such is my luck so I'm amazed I even got Eriksen

    Ederson Ryan
    Dawson Walker Mosses Daniels Trippier
    Eriksen Willian Salah Knockaert JWP
    Deeney Okazaki Diouf

I know I completely bombed on strikers. They all went early so I thought at least I can pick up a few defenders/mids I know are good and play 4-5-1 or something

I was virtually the only one picking mate so I don't think it will be a great loss. Just spent two hours staring at a two minute count down timer. Even the bloke who set the bloody league up didn't show up!

        1. Epic Fail
          • 15 Years
          8 years, 4 months ago

Did they pick their players in advance so they didn't have to be around?

Seems a bit daft that the counter carries on going the full 2 minutes each time. It should only do it fully once for each person, after that then it should go straight for their auto picks and if they come back they can turn the timer back on.

Yeah it was doing that. Skipped through a few people quickly a couple of times. Nearly caught me off guard

I'm surprised how much ridicule I'm getting. Bear in mind there are SIXTEEN teams. Go through and pick the best 16, 32, 48 players in the game and have a look at the tosh that's left. And at this point I'd only picked 1, 2 and 3 players respectively. You certainly can't get a template lookin team

      1. Anathallo
        • 16 Years
        8 years, 4 months ago

I did a draft with 14 and think you have yourself a good team there, especially if you can pick up a better midfielder or, particularly, a better striker on a waiver, which you should be able to do.

I am running a draft with 13-16 teams, picking Wednesday night before season starts. If you're up for it and committed to it sign up at 134990-36456. We've got 5 so far, all ffscout posters. Aiming for 16 teams, good to have people who had a crack at a bigger draft before - as you say it's a different challenge.

        Ps. Great username.

How to build your template team in nine easy steps:

1 pick two of Kane, lukaku, laccazette, Jesus, kun, morata
2 pick one of chicharito, Jrod, Austin, gayle
3 pick one of kdb, Kane, coutinho
4 pick three of sane, pogba, Zaha, Willian, Ramsey, Ritchie, philips, Redmond, ince, mooy
5 pick one of loftus-cheek, carrol, cook
6 pick one of Alonso, kolasinac, kompany, baily
7 pick two of trippier, Dawson, lindelof, Cedric, Daniels
8 pick two out of mee, yedlin, dunk, francis, Rangel
9 put foster in goal and pick one of Elliot, myhill, hart

Remember two things while you do the selection:
A Don't select two of the front eight from the same team
B don't select two players in the back from the same team
Not that double up is so bad - but not doubling up will make you feel less regrets.

Now look at the team you picked - you have a perfectly good looking pleasant template of a team. You can now go out and enjoy your summer.

A bit of the Ownership Tactic explained. Feel free to take it for what it's worth or disregard it 🙂

What I want is a good OR, so I start from the OR then go from there...

    - To get a good OR, you need to get consistent green arrows to climb the ranks
    - To get consistent green arrows, you need consistent GW ranks
    - To get consistent GW ranks, you need to be above the average score
    - To be above the average score, you need to to at least cover your bases with the higher owned players and have your differentials do well.

Let's say Lukaku scores and his ownership is extremely high - naturally the average score rises. If you have Lukaku you'll lose no ground on those around you in the ranks.
However, if you don't own Lukaku and rely on a team full of differentials you are very open to fluctuating ranks. Thus, your OR would be a toss up - depending on how bad red arrows were.

I may be wrong, but that's how I see it

Before people ask results using this...

A past FPL winner Matt made this tactic and uses it each season to consistently get top ranks.

I've not used it for a full season yet, hopefully this season I will.

I agree, specially if that highly owned player is captained when he scores big

lukaku is almost certain to score at least once in the first three gws and anyone who doesnt have him will have one eye on that. if he scores in the first two games (WHM, swa) there will be a lot of movement. best to have him i say, no real downside.

He is owned by 50%. The lot of movement is exaggerated. Those who are going without him, know what they are doing. I just can't see how a casual or a knee-jerker goes without him.

everyone, however experienced, will have "the fear" with lukaku - with their fixtures so good until around gw8 if he starts well the bandwagon will become deafening. hes first on my teamsheet atm. if someone else (jesus, etc) starts better some will hold some will flip but that impact will be lower.

You are missing the point. There is already a bandwagon. There is no one, who has "the fear" of Lukaku that's going without him.

of course there is - anyone who doesnt have lukaku gw1 will be keeping a close eye on what he does.

if he gets a brace against west ham itll be duck hunting season especially if he follows it up with something against swansea

It's a safe and MOR strategy; personally with my 5-2-3 leftfield approach I'm looking to do a Ranieri. Dilly-ding, dilly-dong! 🙂

A better strategy would be to pick the players that will score the most points. It just so happens that many of these players have high ownership.

actually, i dont think you need consistent green arrows - i think you need to minimise your red arrow ranks.

last season i got lots of red arrows but i never dropped very far because they were only just below the average, then my greens were great scores and i rose back up to my level 3-4 reds ago.

i think its very important to plan a strong squad across the board, recognise you cant have everyone so when you have a bad week (players you dont own score) you can be confident next week youll climb again because you have a good squad (you own the players that score above average in each price bracket, just not every week).

i actually pledged (and kept to!) a strategy which worked well - if my gw rank is outside 2m dont make any transfers... i think of those as knee jerk in reaction to a poor week where really its all about the long term.

    Koeman just now on Rooney:

"Of course he would like to create a little more and he would like to score more goals"

And by more he means any.

I'm open-minded and will change my view if he deserves it. Definitely not considering him for FPL and basically expect him to massively slow down Everton, who should know better than to engage in such a massive vanity project.
