Moving Target – Izzy Brown

Brighton and Hove Albion have bolstered their attacking options ahead of their maiden Premier League campaign with the signing of Chelsea’s Izzy Brown on a season-long loan.

The 20-year-old was part of the Huddersfield Town squad that gained promotion to the top flight last season, and Seagulls boss Chris Hughton believes the versatile Brown can continue his development at the Amex Stadium:

“He can play on either flank and he’s done that right the way through his upbringing. He went out on loan to Holland in what was his first loan and played out on the left. At Rotherham, he played up front and at Huddersfield Town he played at number ten. He gives us good scope in the front areas, he’s developing and hopefully, he can develop here.”

The History

Brown began his youth career with a brief spell at Leicester City before joining West Bromwich Albion in 2011 at the age of 14.

He made his professional debut for the Baggies as a substitute in a 3-2 win over Wigan Athletic in May 2013, becoming the second youngest player in Premier League history, aged just 16 years and 117 days old.

In the summer of 2013, Brown signed for Chelsea, although to date he has only made one senior appearance for the Blues, ironically against West Brom in May 2015.

In order to gain first-team experience, Brown was sent on a season-long loan to Dutch outfit Vitesse Arnhem in July 2015.

He racked up 22 league appearances in total, making 12 starts, but only registered one goal and an assist.

Last season, Brown spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Championship side Rotherham United.

He was a regular starter for the Millers and made 20 appearances, managing three goals and five assists.

He then joined Huddersfield in January 2017 for the remainder of the season and produced five goals in 18 matches as the Terriers gained promotion via the play-offs.

Brown has represented England at U16, U17, U19 and U20 levels, scoring 10 goals in 36 outings.

The Prospects

Given Brighton’s relatively small squad, the addition of the versatile Brown will provide Hughton with a number of different options in attack.

The 20-year-old played predominantly as a support striker last season, although he is equally comfortable operating on either flank or even as a centre forward.

Brown is very adept at finding pockets of space in between the lines and is at his most dangerous on the half-turn and driving at the opposition defence.

While not blessed with blistering pace, Brown possesses quick feet and the vision to pick the right pass in the final third.

He also offers a goal threat, particularly when cutting in from the left – the position he started in Brighton’s 3-0 win over Southend United on Tuesday night – and has a knack for scoring from distance.

Last season, Hughton generally favoured one of Jamie Murphy, Solly March or Jiri Skalak on the left of a four-man midfield, with Anthony Knockaert the regular starter down the right.

Summer signing Pascal Gross could well get the nod in a central attacking midfield role if Hughton opts for a slightly more conservative 4-4-1-1 formation in the top flight, but Brown may also come into the reckoning in that position.

The 33-year-old Glenn Murray currently appears the favourite to lead the line for the Seagulls, although it’s likely Hughton will bring in another striker before the transfer window closes.

Brown has been handed a price tag of 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), placing him in the same price bracket as Gross, with Knockaert slightly more expensive on the budget at 6.0.

He’s priced more favourably in Sky Sports, though, coming in at 7.0, compared to 7.3 for Gross and a whopping 8.5 for Knockaert.

Comparing the trio’s underlying statistics from last season, Brown averaged a shot every 46.3 minutes, unsurprisingly inferior to Knockaert (35.6) but stronger than Gross (53.55).

Gross was hugely creative for Ingolstadt last term, though, averaging a key pass every 27.9 minutes, outshining both Knockaert (40.5) and Brown (54.47).

The big disadvantage for Brown is that he’s not expected to compete for set-piece duties, with Knockaert, Gross and left-back Markus Suttner ahead of him in that queue.

With Knockaert an injury concern for the start of the season after damaging ankle ligaments during a pre-season friendly, Brown looks to have a good chance of forcing his way into the starting XI.

Brighton begin their campaign with a difficult home fixture against Manchester City before a more favourable run of matches (lei wat WBA bou NEW) up to Gameweek 6.

Investing in the Seagulls attack could pay off based on the opening schedule, although with four teams scoring more goals than the 74 that Hughton’s men managed last season, there is a concern over their potency in the final third.

Hughton is a fairly conservative coach – his Norwich City side only scored 41 goals in 2012/13 and a meagre 28 when they were relegated the following season.

As a result, there may be no guarantees that an attacking player such as Brown will start week-in, week-out as a wide player in a four-man midfield, hindering his Fantasy appeal unless he nails down a more advanced role.

At this point, it’s Gross and Knockaert (when he’s back to full fitness), who look the safer bets, then, although there’s little doubt that Brown has the talent to be a factor over the course of the season.

Should he get those regular starts and be given the freedom to express himself, he could yet emerge as a viable budget option.

I think everyone's spent so long becoming accustomed to their mid-priced mids, and deliberating over which to choose, that they've convinced themselves they are essential to their teams, and without them, a team is doomed.

To be fair, the same has happened to me with my defenders, but at least I can be comfortable with the idea that they are likely to score more points in the long term than their midfield counterparts, or at the minimum, they're more nailed.

Are you open to new ideas?

I think you can run into issues in pricing even if you plan to be 'flexible'. What happens when you're 0.5 short af the emerging bargain? You've not picked the best team for points that you could, and now you can't jump on the bandwagon either.

Besides I can trade midfielders easily too, based not just on goal potential but 4 point-CS potential to 😀 😛

I see the confusion. By long term value I mean two things.

First is PPG, which is generally likely to be better amongst defenders compared to the similarly priced defenders at this point (even if the mids have a 'higher ceiling').

Second, that doesn't mean I have to keep the players long term to get the PPG returns. The chance of those points is still the same in the short or long term. But it means that I CAN keep them for the long term without being worried that they will drastically decline. However I will still use my FT if I need to.

The point, Giggsy, is not to rip into people for having a different team to you. It goes against the ideals of the community, and it's a barrier to diversity and solving problems. I, for one, don't want to compete againsts FFS as a collective template, but the individual managers.

I'm all for that, but saying that we are only picking the mid-priced mids because we're used to it is ludicrous, and putting words in our mouths. As soon as the game came out, many 7.0m mids stood right out as great value.

No my point is that most people who reply to me on this site, automatically shut down ideas that don't fit with their own. And that's not simply because they're bigotted people, but because they've spend so long thinking about a certain box to make it the best box, that they can't compute the idea that another box could possibly be better.

Not saying my tactic is better, but people should allow for a variety of tactics, and give advice about how to improve their ideas, rather than shutting them down.

Please don't think I'm offending your choices, or the way you make choices. I am criticising how people criticise others (ie not constructively).

Besides, surely you would be one of the first to say that Ramsey isn't essential, or Willian isn't essential. Or Redmond isn't essential etc.

Not sure why you're taking it so personally.

True the scoring system is the same, but the pricing is different, the game of football is evolving, and individual players are different - and improving/declining. The point of the game for me is to choose which players will score the most points as a collective. Sticking to traditions because they've worked in the past might allow you to stay afloat, but doesn't guarantee you a competative side or a chance at the title!

I agree. Many of these mids are sort of limited in returns potential. Teams are filling up on them but individually, I'm not sure i trust the likes of Ramsey Tadic Willian Mkhi enough to have more than 1 of them. Milner outscored these guys as a midfielder. So with additional defender points, he will easily beat them

I've played around with all formations and I've narrowed it down to 343 vs 442. Certain starters regardless of formation is: Kane Lukaku KDB and the double defensive rotation of Foster/Heaton & Dawson/Lowton. Rest of the positions are not set.

I'm open to new ideas if one emerges. But right now Willian and Ramsey at 7m each is too good to ignore when no team has played yet.

Willian especially, or Fab for that matter, will be central to Chelsea attack in first few matches. 7m to have attackers who control set pieces for the champions? I just can't look beyond that.

Bit of a generalisation there and I am not sure there is a mass belief that mid-priced mids are essential. Not many teams at all with their midfields stacked with 7 mill midfielders - I am seeing many 433 formations with two budget mids, two premium mids and one mid-priced mid. Really not sure what, if any, is the issue

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years

Hi Hotdogs. Sorry for my late reply. My answer would be two-fold:

        1) The teams you suggest that you're seeing still have a 7m mid slot. That's the part that many see as essential. The hole. The box. Mostly down to this idea of 'flexibility', since they can easily swap for emerging options once the game starts.

        2) The real issue I have perhaps I didn't get across in the post. I'm concerned that people's minds, including my own, are closed by repetition, habituation and associative learning, such that they now believe the 7m slot is essential, and by extension are shocked when they see a team without the slot, and respond to those people unfairly. This logic can be extended to all sorts of beliefs within and outside of FFS/FPL. There are plenty of myths banded about in this place!

If the new idea is that I should open my team to mid price mids, then no, not sure I'm up for that. Currently I have Willian but plan to transfer him out after GW1 due to fixtures. And I want to upgrade my 5th Def by GW3.
I'm intending to play 5-2-3 most weeks but will have a 5.5 mid available to replace a Def if necessary. I'll also have Tom Carroll as backup to my backup if fixtures dictate.
I think I see more value in wing backs than the mid price mids so that's the way I'm going to go.

I still think he's nailed. He's just been playing so far wide that's it's bothering me. I'm probably gonna keep him because it keeps the team balanced.

You don't think Pep will play 352 the odd time like he did last night and so leave no room for Sane to start?

That's probably equivalent to Sane being benched, probably the same likelihood as usual. Doesn't bother me much but more and more KDB looks like the nailed option in a goalscoring team.

Yeah, but he has four playing, so if Cedric doesn't play (not sure why he wouldn't, but anyway) then a midfielder would be first subs, changing formation to 3-4-3

True, but I think early on you should be able to pick four defenders, 4.5m and above, and be very confident at least three will play.
I've played FPL for 4 seasons and I don't remember a time I've only had two defenders play, and I always have a 4.0m fodder

    Help & advice welcome...

    GK: Forster**, Foster
DEF: Cedric**, Dawson**, Bailey** (Mustafi & Mee) - backup/ rotation
MID: De Bruyne**, Willian** (£15 million for 3 midfielders)
    FWD: Lukaku**, Kane**, Firmino**

** Expected core team members for GW1-5 potentially further.

From the above I need anyone's opinion on who to spend the £15 million on? Thanks

I know you're all sick of RMTs but if you can feedback I would appreciate

    Foster (Elliot)
    Lindelof/Cedric/Trippier/Dunk (Hefele)
    Cout/Eriksen/KDB (Carrol/ RLC)
    Jesus/Lukaku/Austin

I'm worried it might be too good 🙂

Id go Alli over Eriksen. Same price and with Son injured they will most likely play 352. Alli plays almost like a second striker in that formation.

Fabregas is a freak look at those stats. Imagine he was a starter this season I can see why my pack gave him a rating of 10/10 until hazard is back

Bournemouth's scoring record looks very good- really tempted to go for Stanislas despite his doubt for the start of the season

I think you havde to wait and see with his injury. I quite Chadli. You could start with him. An easy transfer to Stan when he returns

He'll play, he's had this hernia problem for months & he still played, if not Fraser is .5 cheaper, so win win
