Skipper Leighton Baines grabs the winner as Everton labour to victory in the first leg of their Europa League third round qualifying tie.

Here are the notes from a testing night for the Toffees.

Everton 1 MFK Ruzomberok 0

Leighton Baines’ deflected strike gave Everton something to defend ahead of what is likely to be a tricky trip to Slovakia for the second leg of their Europa League qualifying tie.

While Ronald Koeman’s men were still getting to grips with pre-season, their opponents had already played one league match and beaten Norwegians SK Brann over two legs to earn their visit to Goodison.

So there was always a feeling that this could be a step too soon for the Toffees.

And so it proved.

Everton were slightly off the pace for much of the encounter, and it took the second-half introduction of new signing Sandro to bring some directness and intent into their attacking play.

Koeman handed competitive debuts to defenders Michael Keane and Cuco Martina, though Jordan Pickford – with just 45 minutes in pre-season behind him – lost out to Maarten Stekelenburg in goal.

Davy Klaasen was part of the midfield three in a 4-3-2-1 formation.

The returning Wayne Rooney played through the middle up front, supported from the flanks by Kevin Mirallas, who was handed set-piece duties, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Keane was assured throughout, Martina considerably less so, while Klaasen showed the odd flash of creative ability but might need to demonstrate a lot more – and quickly – should Everton finally land long-time transfer target Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Ruzoberok were resolute in defence and quick to counter, forcing a couple of smart saves from Stekelenburg before Sandro, who replaced Calvert-Lewin, changed the tie’s dynamic.

Rooney was pushed out to the right to accommodate the Spaniard, whose willingness to run behind the back four finally stretched the Slovakians’ defence, allowing the hosts to apply some sustained pressure from which Baines’ winner eventually came.

Post-match, Koeman was quick to praise the impact of Sandro.

“Sandro brought pace to the team, he showed good movement and that gave Wayne more freedom to play from the right side.”

But the manager also told ITV Sport that he is keen to bring in another striker – not what the 20.9% of FPL manager who own Rooney wanted to hear.

Then again, Everton’s opening schedule is sufficiently harsh – involving four of last season’s top six by the middle of September – that early investment in any of their assets looks decidedly risky.

A clean sheet could boost the stock of the 13.0%-owned Keane, while the goal from the ever-reliable Baines (10.3%) was another reminder of his Fantasy pedigree.

But major backing of Everton players looks to be a strategy for the longer term, or at least a good deal later than this very early competitive start to the season.

Everton: Stekelenburg; Martina, Keane, Williams, Baines; Gueye, Schneiderlin, Klaassen (Davies 86); Mirallas (Lookman 82), Calvert-Lewin (Sandro 61); Rooney.
Subs not used: Pickford, Jagielka, Holgate, Barry.

    Foster
    Kompany Trippier Cedric
    Mane Redmond Chadli Stanislas
    Kane Lukaku Morata

    Myhill Morgan Long RLC

4 clear captain choices, 3 strong defenders (with nailed 4.5 backup and low ownership 4.0)
3 mid-prices midfielders wont all work out, but with low ownership if any 3 does well the points will be a big boost
Looking to really make sure i have a very strong captain choice every week

        why so terrible?
Mane = liverpools highest scoring player, liverpool = most attacking team
Redmond (or Tadic) = best starting fixtures, and good underlying stats last year
Chadli (or Phillips) + Stanislas = excellent points per week ratio

I can spend 3m more on each but have to lose 2 of my strikers and face having only 2 players for captain choice every week

          Stanislas doubtful and un-nailed
Chadli awful stats and minutes, un-nailed
Mane should be Coutinho or Salah for hte 0.5 extra.

            why Coutino over Mane?
less ppg, less touches in the box, average pitch positon is further back
Mane also got himself in the players XI of the year despite missing half the season

As for Salah - imo hes not better than Mane, and its a punt from Liverpool to sign him.

You are destroying your team with that forward line. That may be fine in March, when you have a 105m budget, but you need to spread out the funds more at the start of the season.

      imo.

        its about maximizing potential captains...
the mids priced at 8-10 dont really enthrall me enough to make it worth dumping Morata (for example)
although when Hazard is back he will come in and i'll be able to see which mid-price forward is looking best

Having a good captain pick is all well and good, but you can only captain one player each week. 35m invested in 3 forwards is not a sound strategy in my opinion. You need to spread the funds across the board if you want to produce high points.

In my experience, top ranked players have always had high value defenders, midfielders and forwards.

You're not gonna get the captain right each week either, and when that fails, and you don't have anything to fall back on that week, your rank will really suffer

    Please RMT

    Foster - Myhill
Alonso - Valencia - Yoshida - (Tomkins - Francis rotation)

    Eriksen - KdB - Sanchez - Phillips - Carrol

    Lukaku - JRod (4,5)

      No.

You will need to choose 2 of your power midfielders and upgrade either JRod or the 4.5 Striker to somebody decent. JRod is fine as a third striker but apart from a run of 2 or 3 games in a row where he scores there will be a lot of quiet weeks as well

You already have a man city attacker in KDB so Arsenal cover would be good. If Austin plays his fixtures are loads better. If he doesn't swap to Gayle simples

Has anyone ever been told they're not allowed to enter a work's cash league?

I've been told exactly that this year - I am however, allowed to enter the league if I accept a "points handicap" (based solely on last season's performance). This is due to a few of my colleagues (only 10 in the league to start with) saying they'll boycott if I enter ... the two main administrators have set the handicap at 100 points, with everyone else playing from a level playing field.

Personally, I find it absolutely pathetic considering it's only £10 per person and it's more for banter/bragging rights than financial gain (although the cash is admittedly a bonus).

None of the players are anywhere near as serious as we are on this site, so I feel like accepting the terms and beating them anyway!!

I would be pretty cheesed off if I was made to accept this handicap and then didn't even win the league off scratch... but realistically, I don't think that would happen against that level of opposition in most seasons.

Would you take the handicap mark (and I suppose the compliment - albeit an unfair one) or just tell them to stick their league where the sun doesn't shine?

100 points should be easily achievable, you've got nothing to lose the way I see it, you either can't win by 100 points like they expect, or you do and can laugh in their faces.

its a tenner, if you cant make up 100 points on casuals it'll be a very bad season

If you remember who finished second, you could check his rank history. If they're true casuals, I'd enter. If you win, you're a super pro- if you lose, you've got the handicap to blame and it is only a tenner.

Threatening to boycott is ridiculous, what's wrong with them? They are excluding you because they are useless!

      1. If it's just for bragging rights then tell them you'll enter for Free but take no winnings.

      2. Pay the £10 take the hit if you think they are that bad you will claw the points back.

      3. Find someone who doesn't normally enter and do your team through them on the sly.

Teach them how to play instead.

Or find another company to play with.

I've played in one cash league, ever, last year. Was very politely asked not to play again this year as it might put the others off. In contrast to your situation, it was very diplomatically phrased and as it was a fundraiser for my Saturday team I thought the request was spot on.

Yep. 2 seasons ago i was politely told to leave a league because it wouldnt be fair. Ironically it was a weekly £1 sindicate which I would have won only 4 times. I would however, have walked the overall by 150pts but it was funny how the begged me to drop out. Lol casuals. They want something for very little effort imo. I did apologise for being too good for them.

Wasn't expecting all of these replies!

A quick update - I text the league administrator earlier this afternoon to accept my 100pts handicap, only to be informed that my league invitation will not be received this season... even on the previously suggested terms (by them)... pathetic.

I will of course compare my team's progress against the league entries and will take great pleasure in beating that imaginary handicap margin and gloat about it to them at any possible opportunity - even though I won't be a league member or able to win any cash from it!

Honestly, I don't see it as being pathetic... who wants to gamble money on an almost guaranteed loss? So essentially, you being involved would be denying the rest of them their fun. And where's the satisfaction in winning against an inferior field.

Maybe I've missed them but I'm surprised I haven't seen more cash leagues kicking about on here... just need someone everyone trusts to hold the money.

The 100 point handicap was supposed to negate the almost guarantee of the loss. With such a huge advantage from the start, they shouldn't be so pessimistic about losing £10.

Ultimately you've got to take it as a compliment. It's win-win for you. It's only a tenner. Take the challenge and win, if you don't, you had a 100 point handicap. See how high you can get with a 100 pt handicap. Take the challenge.

Interesting that they accept that they're not as good as you but still enjoy playing. Serves as a useful reminder.

If you're giving up -100pts then you should ask for a reduced buy-in of $5.

Similar to how they sometimes do w/ the vig on points spreads in Vegas:
      -7 -110
      +7 -120

Also, if it's only $10 then why not take on the challenge!?

Alonso - Valencia - Yoshida - (Tomkins - Francis rotation)

          Eriksen - KdB - Sanchez - Phillips - Carrol

          Lukaku - JRod (4,5)

      haha, love this

although Sanchez is off so play 4 4 2

you'll also have terrible problems with two 4.5 forwards who won't ever play

I think I've just had a moment of light!

    Foster | Elliott
    Cedric | Bailly | Trippier | Lascelles | 4.0
    KDB | Coutinho | Willian | JWP | TCarroll
    Kane (C) | Lukaku | Austin

JWP not ideal, nor is the 4.0 defender, but think the rest holds up well until the inevitable September WC

Really? Whose been playing LWB then? Kolasinac is the out and out wingback just presumed monreal would be the LCB.

Arsenal wingbacks look a good option whoever it is.

Bramall mainly. Kolasinac started as LWB v Bayern but wasn't fully fit with the sickenss bug going around. Monreal has only played LCB.

Pretty sure Kolasinac has been signed to be the first choice wingback considering he's the specialist in that position. Wenger experimenting with youngsters and different positions in preseason of course.

Decent attacking returns in Bundesliga last few years.

I did Sane to KDB after their last friendly. Seeing that Pep could want to play 352 every now and then, leaving no room for Sane to start, has made me think twice. KDB can fit in whatever the formation. Just want that extra security.

Liking this team, obviously weaker in midfield but sacrifices need to be made somewhere! What do we think?

    Foster
    Valencia Kompany Trippier Cedric
    Sane Willian Ramsey
    Kane Lukaku Firmino

    Myhill RLC Carroll Francis

    Cheers

How's this for a draft team in a 7 man league?

    Lloris | Ederson
Kolasinac Kompany Van Dijk | Darmian Ake
De Bruyne Mane Salah Zaha Klassen
    Kane Lacazette | Chicarito
