Skipper Leighton Baines grabs the winner as Everton labour to victory in the first leg of their Europa League third round qualifying tie.

Here are the notes from a testing night for the Toffees.

Everton 1 MFK Ruzomberok 0

Leighton Baines’ deflected strike gave Everton something to defend ahead of what is likely to be a tricky trip to Slovakia for the second leg of their Europa League qualifying tie.

While Ronald Koeman’s men were still getting to grips with pre-season, their opponents had already played one league match and beaten Norwegians SK Brann over two legs to earn their visit to Goodison.

So there was always a feeling that this could be a step too soon for the Toffees.

And so it proved.

Everton were slightly off the pace for much of the encounter, and it took the second-half introduction of new signing Sandro to bring some directness and intent into their attacking play.

Koeman handed competitive debuts to defenders Michael Keane and Cuco Martina, though Jordan Pickford – with just 45 minutes in pre-season behind him – lost out to Maarten Stekelenburg in goal.

Davy Klaasen was part of the midfield three in a 4-3-2-1 formation.

The returning Wayne Rooney played through the middle up front, supported from the flanks by Kevin Mirallas, who was handed set-piece duties, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Keane was assured throughout, Martina considerably less so, while Klaasen showed the odd flash of creative ability but might need to demonstrate a lot more – and quickly – should Everton finally land long-time transfer target Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Ruzoberok were resolute in defence and quick to counter, forcing a couple of smart saves from Stekelenburg before Sandro, who replaced Calvert-Lewin, changed the tie’s dynamic.

Rooney was pushed out to the right to accommodate the Spaniard, whose willingness to run behind the back four finally stretched the Slovakians’ defence, allowing the hosts to apply some sustained pressure from which Baines’ winner eventually came.

Post-match, Koeman was quick to praise the impact of Sandro.

“Sandro brought pace to the team, he showed good movement and that gave Wayne more freedom to play from the right side.”

But the manager also told ITV Sport that he is keen to bring in another striker – not what the 20.9% of FPL manager who own Rooney wanted to hear.

Then again, Everton’s opening schedule is sufficiently harsh – involving four of last season’s top six by the middle of September – that early investment in any of their assets looks decidedly risky.

A clean sheet could boost the stock of the 13.0%-owned Keane, while the goal from the ever-reliable Baines (10.3%) was another reminder of his Fantasy pedigree.

But major backing of Everton players looks to be a strategy for the longer term, or at least a good deal later than this very early competitive start to the season.

Everton: Stekelenburg; Martina, Keane, Williams, Baines; Gueye, Schneiderlin, Klaassen (Davies 86); Mirallas (Lookman 82), Calvert-Lewin (Sandro 61); Rooney.
Subs not used: Pickford, Jagielka, Holgate, Barry.

Will Willian get all the game time?

Until Hazard returns, it seems likely that Willian will be in the first-choice XI.

After that, it's unclear - as is the precise date that Hazard may return (projected to be sometime around GW4, but obviously that could change).

It was a report earlier in the summer in which Hazard's return was floated to be "Early September". Looking at their fixtures, that could be GW4 (Sep 9) or more conservatively, GW5 (Sep 17). But it's certainly fuzzy right now. He returned to light training this week, which is promising. We'll have to wait and see, I guess.

Ah right. Yeah I figured that since he's "stepped up", that it could be more like GW 2-5 (conservative) rather than 4-5.

There was a new article on the Evening Standard's site today (http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/chelsea-boss-antonio-conte-wont-rush-eden-hazard-back-from-injury-to-benefit-alvaro-morata-a3598456.html) that vaguely refers to his return date as "September". So somewhere in the 4-6 ballpark seems likely.

Trying to judge the infferences of articles is so annoying, and ultimately futile. They all want to be suggestive to get shares, and ultimately don't necessarily know what they're talking about either. They mostly just copy from either other.

I mean is this purposefully vague or has it been written in a rush?

"Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has said he won't rush Eden Hazard back from injury ahead of the new season"

So he's said it ahead of the season (well, obviously), or he won't be rushed back before the season starts (well, obviously).

Anyway, for me I think there's enough risk to justify avoiding Willian during bad fixtures, as much as I love him. I could change my mind with new info though.

Is Hunemeier a starter? I have him in my team atm but not sure. Don't think Rangel starts either which may be an issue. Not to mention if Chelsea do buy Alex Sandro as LWB. Other than that I like it, i'm going Pogba and Redmond too, Soton fixtures are great. You think Austin will start over Gabb?

What's everyone's thoughts on Holding at Arse? Only £5m and if they play 3 at the back then he has a good chance to start, it'll come down to him vs Monreal I think. Not to mention Gabriel is out for a while and Kos is banned.

Also, Bernardo Silva at City. £40m signing and he was class for Monaco, any thoughts on how he'll feature? I think £8m is a bargain for him.

I'm also interested to hear thoughts on two players who haven't really featured in many RMTs - Pogba and Morata.

    1. the snazzy viking
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 8 months ago

Pogba will only be a gem if he plays CAM. Morata is unproven in the premier league and doesn't have good fixtures. Bernardo Silva could be rotated in the Man City minefield. Holding could be a decent pick but he'll only start for 3 weeks, so you're better off just getting Daniels at that price. Monreal could be good though I prefer Trippier/Lindelof

    2. ajones1608
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 8 months ago

Holding could be a decent shout as he's in a team which inherently won't concede many goals. However I like the look of Kolasinic for Arsenal as he likes goals and assists and Wenger is sure to push him up if they go 3 at the back.

Bernardo is a long term replacement for David Silva and I think he will have a good season, however can't see him getting much game time initially. De Bruyne looks like the man to get for city.

I don't ever like putting in new signings straight away so I would avoid Morata personally. I think Pedro and WIllian will carry him first off but he will be good. Pogba I'm not sure on at all, I am just staying away because I have no idea!

      1. Herc
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 8 months ago

You're thinking the same as me then. I don't buy too much into the unproven in the prem thinking, I think a new striker in the current champs shouldn't have too many issues. The City starting XI is a real tough one, I think only KDB is a banker at the moment. It makes it so hard to pick any of them for fear of rotation. I currently have Jesus and Bernardo but need to get rid I think.

    3. suddenorgan
      • 15 Years
      8 years, 8 months ago

The thing is it's not just Monreal he's competing with given that Kolasinac started in the back three in one of their friendlies. Even Gibbs could come in at LWB pushing one of Monreal/Kolasinac back into one of the central spots. It would really be a 2 week punt at best.

If Mourinho sticks with the 3-5-2 Pogba could be a great option, but that's a big if.

Plus the likes of Kane, Aguero, Jesus, Lukaku and Lacazette will be banging in goals while you'll be marvelling at your expensive defence (who aren't keeping clean sheets!)

Rooney - depends on the set-piece situation at Everton (penalties/direct free kicks)
Rashford - i'll wait a couple of games to see how he fits with Lukaku
Chicarito - really fancy him as a cheaper 3rd striker. West ham did seem to create chances last year just didn't have a striker to finish them.
People going for Defoe need to keep an eye on the Wilson situation.

I have a few sleepers I'd be interested to get opinions on:

bakayoko at Chelsea is very cheap and imo is more than a DM. Not great potential for points but only £5m although takes up a Chelsea spot.

Sobhi at Stoke impressed me last season when he played and may get more game time now arnautovic has gone. Only £5m

Sandro at Everton I like very much. Only £7m and should get good service but will he start?

Klaasen at Everton also, just concerned where he will play. £7.5m might be more than I want to pay though.

Fraser at Bournemouth, only £5.5m and always seems to contribute when he plays although rarely lasted 90 mins last season when he did start

I would stay away from Everton, no idea who will start + there first 5 games are really tough. Better off waiting till those games are over then having a look. Keep an eye on Tom Davies

    Alright everyone?

Been taking time off fantasy football and just logged back in after buying the membership. Hope you all had a nice off season!

Now... Let's talk must haves. Alexis not one i gather, Kane would seem one, Lukaku too, others? Or perhaps I'm taking the wrong approach here.. maybe I should be asking the best enablers first.

Lukaku for me. Kane too pricey. Have to assess Wembley factor

No must-haves. Pick the players you like. E.g. Kevin De Bruyne 😛

If you want to play safe and sensible, pick Lukaku and Kane.

If you're a maverick, good luck. I won't tell you who to pick

Gone a bit experimental here folks, please let me know what you reckon!

    Foster

    Trippier / Cedric / Daniels / Dawson

    KDB / Eriksen / Alli

    Lukaku / Lacazette / Austin

Bench: Myhill / Caroll / RLC / Mee

Everyone seems to be going for Austin over Gabb at Soton, why is that?

Cheaper and has been starting in pre-season over Gabb...so far...

Has he really? I need to keep up to date, Soton's starting fixtures look really good.
