Skipper Leighton Baines grabs the winner as Everton labour to victory in the first leg of their Europa League third round qualifying tie.

Here are the notes from a testing night for the Toffees.

Everton 1 MFK Ruzomberok 0

Leighton Baines’ deflected strike gave Everton something to defend ahead of what is likely to be a tricky trip to Slovakia for the second leg of their Europa League qualifying tie.

While Ronald Koeman’s men were still getting to grips with pre-season, their opponents had already played one league match and beaten Norwegians SK Brann over two legs to earn their visit to Goodison.

So there was always a feeling that this could be a step too soon for the Toffees.

And so it proved.

Everton were slightly off the pace for much of the encounter, and it took the second-half introduction of new signing Sandro to bring some directness and intent into their attacking play.

Koeman handed competitive debuts to defenders Michael Keane and Cuco Martina, though Jordan Pickford – with just 45 minutes in pre-season behind him – lost out to Maarten Stekelenburg in goal.

Davy Klaasen was part of the midfield three in a 4-3-2-1 formation.

The returning Wayne Rooney played through the middle up front, supported from the flanks by Kevin Mirallas, who was handed set-piece duties, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Keane was assured throughout, Martina considerably less so, while Klaasen showed the odd flash of creative ability but might need to demonstrate a lot more – and quickly – should Everton finally land long-time transfer target Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Ruzoberok were resolute in defence and quick to counter, forcing a couple of smart saves from Stekelenburg before Sandro, who replaced Calvert-Lewin, changed the tie’s dynamic.

Rooney was pushed out to the right to accommodate the Spaniard, whose willingness to run behind the back four finally stretched the Slovakians’ defence, allowing the hosts to apply some sustained pressure from which Baines’ winner eventually came.

Post-match, Koeman was quick to praise the impact of Sandro.

“Sandro brought pace to the team, he showed good movement and that gave Wayne more freedom to play from the right side.â€

But the manager also told ITV Sport that he is keen to bring in another striker – not what the 20.9% of FPL manager who own Rooney wanted to hear.

Then again, Everton’s opening schedule is sufficiently harsh – involving four of last season’s top six by the middle of September – that early investment in any of their assets looks decidedly risky.

A clean sheet could boost the stock of the 13.0%-owned Keane, while the goal from the ever-reliable Baines (10.3%) was another reminder of his Fantasy pedigree.

But major backing of Everton players looks to be a strategy for the longer term, or at least a good deal later than this very early competitive start to the season.

Everton: Stekelenburg; Martina, Keane, Williams, Baines; Gueye, Schneiderlin, Klaassen (Davies 86); Mirallas (Lookman 82), Calvert-Lewin (Sandro 61); Rooney.
Subs not used: Pickford, Jagielka, Holgate, Barry.

What are people roughly spending on defenders?

I'm currently on about £25m in most my drafts allowing me to get (currently) Bertrand, Trippier, ake and two £4.5m. Really tempted by Alonso as, it looks to me like Conte is a bit scared and will play his strongest team (at least to start the season!)

Yeah, if Sandro fails to arrive then Alonso looks good @7. Seems to fit in better in a 4 man defence but I think it's still doable in a 3-4-3 with a cheap 4th milf.

I liked him when writing about him pre-launch, definitely a decent prospect as any at 6.0 and with a point to prove. Did have pens at Derby which embellished last season's output somewhat. But still worth a look.

For 6.0 you can have Kompany or Luiz.

Possibly. Big thing is the "if" there. Looked very good for us last year (no end product, though) so if he kicks he could be a great shout later in the season. Wait for things to settle first though before going in on him for sure!!!

          Try Ryan Fraser.

Wrote about him a little on here yest (copy and paste):

He returned 100 points in 1764 mins last season. This translates in 19.7 games worth of football (1769/90). That gives us a points per game of 5.07 which is super healthy for the season. He also has the dubious honour of having "won" the most penalties last season (http://www.squawka.com/news/ryan-fraser-has-won-more-penalties-than-any-premier-league-player-this-season/927869).

Obviously it depends if Howe plays him, but the sense of "proven quality" is nice and he could well kick on this term, and be a nice "set and forget" punt at 5.5 in the 4th midfield. Stanislaus out for a little while it seems so it elevates his chances of starting

to be honest, I think Iwobi is a decent punt. Yes, risky and i wouldn't make up my mind until just before game week 1 but its looking pretty certain that Sanchez will leave, equally it's quite possible Arsenal won't get Lemar and based on his track record you wouldn't rule out Arsene starting with Iwobi. He started fairly well last season if i remember correctly, has made a positive pre-season contribution.

Stories in the press of a falling out with Pulis. May not be nailed on at the start of the season, with competition from Phillips and J Rod in the attacking winger positions.

    Which team is better?

Foster, Cedric, Trippier, Zabaleta, Ince, Willian, Alli, De Bruyne, Chicarito, Lukaku, Kane (Subs ultra cheapos)

    Or

Foster, Cedric, Trippier, Zabaleta, Ince, Willian, Ali, De Bruyne, Coutinho, Chicarito, Lukaku (Subs ultra cheapos)

Second option also leaves with me 3.5 million left over to upgrade Willian to Hazard after a few weeks.

Suppose I could hold on to the first option and do the move a few weeks in, dropping Kane and Willian for Coutinho and Hazard, unless price rises dicated otherwise but really that would only be a problem if Coutinho has absolute blinders.

Given the respective fixtures that looks a fair question to me - if Gabbiadini starts the season first choice ahead of Austin he could easily have more points from the first 6 games.

I'll bow to Lucy's knowledge of all things Southampton. All a bit up in the air but Gabbiadini has a decent chance:

          Strikers?
I’d be leaving these alone for now. Firstly, we’ve been linked with a raft of strikers and sold JRod. This might mean a new man coming into the ranks, or it could mean that Sam Gallagher is set to play a more significant role in the squad. If Pellegrino plays his conventional 4-2-3-1, it’s not clear who from Austin and Gabbiadini leads the line, and there could even be a wide berth for someone like Long. There MAY be opportunity to see MP try a traditional 4-4-2 but it’s unlikely, at this stage, to be a consistent tactic. So I wouldn’t get too carried away if you see him experimenting with that in pre-season. If you pushed me, I’d say Gabbiadini, given that he’s much more mobile than Austin, more personally inclined to do the pressing that MP would probably want from his strikers, and less injury prone.

No, I read that. But he has 11 shots on target from more than 8 games. 3 out of 5 Big Chances missed. I remain unconvinced. 🙂

Too small a sample for stats to mean anything for me I'm afraid - have to rely upon those who've watched him, can put it in context of the team as a whole, understand the mindset of the manager, etc. I can't do any of that so I'll trust Lucy for now.

Yeah he's OK, wrote an article about him a while ago, 12g 2a last season so a bit more of a direct type than a passer/assister (both assists came in one game)

Not sure he's as good as the other options available at 6.0 at this point, though. He was one I was hoping would get 5.5 if I'm honest.

At last a team I'm very happy with, what's everyone think?

    Foster
    Trippier, Lindehof, Cedric
    Alli, Coutinho, Sane, Willian,
    Lukaku, Lacazette, Austin

    Elliot, Mee, Rangel, Carroll.

Got 1 attacker from each of the big 6 teams which I'm fairly happy about. Fingers crossed Austin becomes first choice and I'm good to go.

14.7% owned atm, think quite a few are. Let's see if the Alex Sandro story gets resurrected; if not, think I'll look to find a way to fit him in and see if I like the squad.

I've got him, presents better value than any 7m mids at the minute - atleast until CL gets under way.

    RMT Please.

    De Gea (Elliot)

    Tripper-Cedric-Keane-(Mee)-(Simpson)

    RLC-Coutinho-KDB-Redmond-(Carroll)

    Gayle-Kane-Lukaku

Any thoughts or potential changes? I'm happy with my team but I could really do with some advice/improvements?

    I think I've absolutely nailed a knockout 4-4-2 formation:

    DDG

    Trippier Milner Cedric Bellerin

    KDB Ramsey Eriksen Phillips

    Lukaku Lacazette

    Subs: RLC, Hunemeier, Elliott, McBurnie

    Anyone spot any flaws??

Bellerin vs Ox on wing back. A doubt about his game time

I would get rid of milner for Bailly and then use the 0.5 to upgrade Eriksen to Alli.

Eriksen scored pretty much the same points as Alli last season- why people favour Alli so much I don't really know

Chelsea attacker instead of Ramsey to cover Chelsea goals.

And the bench is awful I personally think it needs to be a little stronger, if a couple of your players get injured your spending points or scoring 0 that gameweek.

    Which one is better?
    A) Coutinho and Alonso
    B) Bellerin and KDB

I would probably say Bellerin and KDB, purely based on the face that Coutinho could be off to Spain, and you need to apply for a mortgage before you buy Alonso.
But there are probably better options again out there.

B gives me 3 big hitters upfront, though no player would be over 7m in midfield

Why? Because there is loads of media speculation? Every year it 'looks like' Ronaldo, Bale etc are going to move to Man U. Remember when Morata was going to Man U? Lukaku going to Chelsea? Griezman going to Man U? etc etc

    Any thoughts on improving this:

    Foster (Elliot)
    Kompany Bertrand Cedric Trippier (Long)
    Willian Coutinho KDB (RLC) (Carroll/Mesa)
    Kane Lukaku Gayle

    Still unsure on:
    a) Mesa or Carroll.
    b) Gayle or Austin.
    c) Coutinho or Salah

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

Doing a fpl draft with some pals tomorrow- just had a practice with a dummy team in a public league.

I had a first pick, no problem. When it came to my second go I picked someone, a red countdown bar appeared- when that was up a 'you've gone idle' message appeared and it auto selected my team..

Anyone had problems with it? Would appreciate it if someone could tell me where I went wrong!

Same here on my 1st mock draft. Do a few more mocks, you'll get quicker and learn what you're actually seeing and how quick the turnaround can be 😆

In RMT here seeing lots of Foster as GK but in statistics, still De Gea is most choosen player.

Will Foster hit good form regarding their fixtures?

Or De Gea will be the cheapest nailed in Man Utd defense and we need to add?

    Thx you.

De Gea is the casual's dream. You won't find anyone here spending 5.5 on a player with 0 goal threat.

    I think I'm there:

    Forster Elliot

    Trippier / Cedric / Ake / xxxx / xxxx

    Salah / KDB / Pogba / Ince / RLC

    Hernandez / Morata / Lukaku

I have £9.5 for my last 2 defenders, I'm thinking as I have 4 playing midfielders I will opt for 2*4.5 that rotate to give me flexibility to play 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 or even 4-4-2, I'll keep the remaining 0.5m in the bank.

I have no Tottenham or Arsenal cover and although i could do:

    Pogba & KDB = Alli & Sane

I saw Spurs in the CL at Wembley and they didn't look at home there at all, I feel it will take a while for them to become settled and with ManU's fixtures I feel Pogba is a better option at least to start with.
