Newcastle United completed their fifth summer signing with the addition of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mikel Merino on a season-long loan.

The Spanish U21 international struggled for pitch-time after joining the German giants last summer, but Magpies boss Rafa Benitez believes Merino can thrive under his guidance over the coming campaign:

“Mikel is a midfielder with talent, an under-21 international for Spain. He’s a good size, has quality on the ball and he’s very, very focused and professional. Hopefully, he’s the kind of player we can improve a lot – he certainly has the mentality to get better and better. He has to show what he has, and hopefully, he can enjoy playing here for a long time.”

The History

Merino began his youth career at Osasuna and made his debut for the reserve side during the 2013/14 season.

He broke into the first-team squad the following campaign, making 29 appearances and registering one goal and four assists in the Spanish second tier.

The midfielder enjoyed another strong season in 2015/16, producing seven goals and one assist in 38 league outings, as Osasuna gained promotion to La Liga via the play-offs.

Merino then signed a five-year deal with Dortmund, but featured in just eight league matches last term, making only two starts.

The 21-year-old has represented Spain at both U19 and U21 levels, scoring two goals in 19 matches, and was part of the squad that finished as runners-up in this summer’s UEFA U21 Championship.

The Prospects

While both of Merino’s starts for Dortmund came at centre-back, the Spaniard is predominantly a midfield player, capable of operating either as a deep-lying playmaker or as a box-to-box midfielder.

In his first interview for his new club, Merino offered his own perspective of what he can offer.

“I am a midfielder with a lot of potential. I like to help my team-mates always with the ball or without the ball. I always want to attack to have the ball and score goals and to help the team to go forward. This is always my main mentality, but of course, we know that defence is a really important part of the game.”

At six foot two, Merino is strong in the air (he won over 60% of his aerial duels throughout his career at Osasuna and with the Spanish youth sides), while – as you’d expect from a Spanish midfielder – he’s very comfortable in possession, which does make him an option on the left of a three-man defence if Benitez operates with wing-backs.

Merino can spray both short and long passes with a high degree of accuracy from his trusted left foot, while he is also renowned for his work rate in the middle of the park.

The Spaniard is not blessed with a huge amount of pace, though, and he may take time to adjust to the physical nature of English football.

He did win 18 of his 19 attempted tackles last season, suggesting he’ll bring some combativeness to the Magpies’ midfield

His arrival will certainly boost the options available to Benitez.

The Newcastle manager generally favoured Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey as the central midfield pairing in his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation last term, with Jack Colback the main alternative.

Shelvey was instrumental in Newcastle’s title-winning season and, having been named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year, should remain relatively immune to his manager’s tinkering.

Merino is expected to ultimately claim a regular role at the expense of Hayden, with his ability to read the game offering protection in front of the back four.

Given that Merino may offer limited attacking threat in that role, he could come in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League, with a chance he may be priced at 5.0.

In the Sky Sports game, he sets you back 7.3 to Shelvey’s 8.2, though Matt Ritchie looks better value at 8.3.

Newcastle have been handed a favourable start to the season, with five promising fixtures (hud WHM swa STO bha) following the testing opening home clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

The addition of Merino will certainly provide much-needed strength in depth in central midfield, with his quality on the ball and energy likely to mean that he gets plenty of minutes.

But given that he is still in the early stages of his development, and has missed much of Newcastle’s pre-season, it’s perhaps later in the season when he is more likely to assert himself at St James’ Park.

He will likely have little impact on our preferred Magpie midfielder – the aforementioned Ritchie – who could offer strong initial value via his set-piece and penalty duties. Priced at 6.0 in FPL, the Scot returned from injury to feature for 45 minutes in the midweek win over Bradford.

I've made my mind up; Harry Kane won't be coming under starters orders for my team in GW1. His ability to start slowly coupled with the Wembley factor and trebled with Spurs first two fixtures make him a 12.5m luxury to have from the outset imo. Spurs odds for those first two games are 5/6 and 17/10 respectively. Compare those to the likes of Man.United (4/11 & 1/2) Arsenal (2/5 & 4/5) Man. City (2/5 & 1/2) Liverpool (8/13 & 4/11) and even Southampton (8/11 & 10/11) and it gives you an indication that there might be easier pickings out there for some other centre forwards before GW3 arrives. For me, the ideal front three in GW1 would be Lukaku, Aguero, & Morata & Vardy in place of Morata for GW2 so Harry's not even quoted in my book. I'll be rolling over that GW2 transfer and using it to bring in Harry for the Burnley game - by that time he should hopefully have blown away the cobwebs.

Good luck with that strategy. Bookies game odds at this stage are absolutely irrelevant when it comes down to the performance of an individual player so can be completely disregarded in this respect. Bookies match odds also are meaningless regarding how many goals will be scored in that match. Total goals overs and unders odds have far more relevance.

UPDATED: Here are some results of a question I asked earlier. Feel free to add your input (ie vote again and discuss). Over the first 8 GWs or so, can all the:

    A) 6.5 mids who will outscore Kolasinac at LWB

    Tadic: 9 votes
    Redmond: 3 votes
    Mirallas: 1 vote
    Musa (really?): 1 vote
    ...
    None: 1 vote

    B) 6.0 mids who will outscore Bertrand

    Ince: 3 votes
    Stanislas: 1 vote
    Capoue: 1 vote
    Shaqiri: 1 vote
    Lingard: 1 vote
    Knockhaert: 1 vote
    Philips: 1 vote
    Chadli: 1 vote
    Ritchie: 1 vote
    Walters: 1 vote
    ...
    None: 3 votes

    C) 5.5 mids who will outscore Cedric

    Walters: 2 votes
    Fraser: 1 vote
    Allen: 1 vote
    Puncheon: 1 vote
    Capoue: 1 vote
    Mooy: 1 vote
    ...
    None: 4 votes

Comments: With a thousand grains of salt, it seems as though many are convinced that there are players in midfield worth their price, and worth a place in their team. Nobody agrees on who (besides Tadic), but many believe a 'flexible' strategy is the best apporach, jumping on the obvious emerging picks as they arise (who are also assumed to outscore their defence counterparts).

It seems clear to me that, if we were set with the team we started with for many weeks, many more people would be choosing the defenders over the midfielders, because they simply don't know who will score enough points in midfield (decisions have to rely much more on form and genuine attacking threat than defenders). To further back this up, many of the answers given came with caveats, such as "they will only outscore the defender if [e.g., they are actually any good]", which suggests that the defenders are the safest options.

However, transfers do exist, so it's up to us to decide whether 'flexibility' is worth the cost. Are you willing to pay 'secured points' (from defence) as a speculative gamble on emerging attacking threat in the budget mid range? If you plan to WC within the first 8GWs or so, isn't it better to choose the highest scoring options we can using the information we have available to us now, rather than making decisions based on limited incoming infomation when the season starts, and telling ourselves that we're not 'chasing points'? 😉

As I said, feel free to vote and add comments, as it's a very important question for my team! 😀

      Here's the original post http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/07/28/the-numbers-game-stoke-city/?hc_page=5#hc_comment_15969343

The other thing to note about this question is that the 'None' category is underestimated, since it's a first past the post system. In reality, many people's second choices are 'none' since they only back one mid player to beat the defender.

Likewise, few people are very sure anyway, so 60% certainty = 1 vote, but doesn't count the 40% certainty for 'none'. So the balance between mids and defence is more equal than it looks.

It is something I have been arguing that there is a lot more money in defence than in attack and this is why I am playing with 4 in the back. There is an interesting points per value metric that I have been analysing. Cahill for instance, an unglamorous defender and FPL asset if ever there was one finished the season with 178 points and based on his starting price ended up with a points per value of 29.67. Over 50 points higher than the likes of Redmond who people were touting as 4th mids at the beginning of the season and higher than all but the premium midfielders.

It is the same with Alonso and a lot of people are playing 3-4-3 with Willian as their Chelsea cover. Why not go 4-3-3 and play Alonso instead of Willian? They had the same amount of goals/assists last season but Alonso had the added benefit of clean sheet points. Willian also has had four seasons in the PL now but even his best ever score of 135 was 42 points less than what Alonso scored this only season!

How about me. I'm 1.0m over budget. Do you think I should just ditch Redmond for 4.5 and rotate? Spread the cash elsewhere?

            Fabianski
            Alonso, Kolasinac, Trippier, Bertrand, Cedric
            De Bruyne, Redmond
            Kane, Jesus, Lacazette

I just saw a stat which may interest all of you..

Javier Hernandez has the seventh best goals to mins ratio in premier league history.. a goal every 130 minutes. This is anyone who's played over a hundred games. And from what I can remember, he was used as an impact sub so the stat is impressive.

The sub-thing gives the stats opposite effect for me, more difficult to score if you are a regular that plays 90 mins against all teams including the though teams then mostly playing against less good teams.

Impact sub makes it less impressive imo. Still a great stat, but with an impact sub the clue is in the name, come in late in the game, all energetic and full of pace when the defenders are feeling leggy and you have a much higher chance of sneaking past them and netting a goal. It would be more impressive a stat if he kept it up having played 90 minutes most the time.

Just wondered whether it might be a good idea to ban RMT'S from general interest threads and have a special stand alone dedicated thread for them ? There is some excellent general discussion on the main topic threads but wading through a sea of RMT's is pretty off putting.

Yeah, maybe. But I think some RMT's can evolve into some interesting stuff in their own right. I'll consider it for the next two weeks for sure - we have done something similar in the past and things will ramp up further soon.

This would be better than creating 2 different places.

There could be a switch that filters RMT posts.

It would probably involve string manipulation and taking out posts with multiple commas and forward-slashes that occur after every single word. Not all RMT posts have the same structure, but filtering that would probably be best.

Just filtering out "RMT" would cause issues, as posts can have "RMT" in them without being an actual RMT post.

I'm beginning to think that Dwight Gayle is going to be a very good option for that "reasonably priced 3rd striker" slot. I've been swapping between Austin and Chicharito in recent days, but I'm just not convinced that Austin is going to be nailed on for Saints, nor do we really know which formation they are likely to be playing...will they have a lone striker and if so, will Austin share time with Gabbiadini for that role? Equally, although Chicharito is a great price at 7M and is a natural poaching goal scorer, he hasn't played for the Hammers yet and their opening fixtures aren't brilliant.

Gayle scored 23 goals for Newcastle last season over a total of 2145 minutes, giving him the best PPG returns from the top strikers in the Championship. Other than the opening game against Spurs, Newcastle have some favourable fixtures and I can see them having a solid start to the season.

So, is he the best 3rd striker option that will be nailed on and allow funds to be distributed elsewhere?

He could be a big beneficiary of transfers in should Austin fail in Gw 1.
There something to be said for picking players with a great Gw 2 fixture rather than Gw 1

I think he will do well enough for the price; just have reasonable expectations.

Whether he is the best option remains to be seen.

I understand that Rafa is in the market for another forward and also Mitrovic is getting some time in pre-season.

I don't think he is necessarily any more nailed than Austin.

I'm starting to think that the way to go this season is 3 heavy hitters up front and at least 2 premium defenders.
There is number of expensive midfielders that in my opinion may turn out not worth their price tag:
-KDB - may be playing too deep to provide decent returns week in & out.
        - Sanchez - God only know where he will be playing most likely wing sharing points with Laca and Giroud.
        - Eriksen & Alli - will playing at Wembley affect them ? They didn't look good last season in CL.
        - Coutinho, Salah - point sharing among LFC offensive players.

In my opinion two out of Lukaku, Kane, Jesus & Aguero plus Deofoe as the thitd striker is the way to go this year.

*if* Wembley is a factor would it not also affect Kane's returns? Think there's likely to be a difference in playing Prem teams at Wembley over CL teams.

KDB - nothing in pre-season suggests his haul will be reduced, though almost impossible to predict what Pep will do.

          - Sanchez, more of a worry is his mental state if still at Arsenal

          - Liverpool mids, tend to agree.. Coutinho likely to be the pick of them but early season CL qualifying might impact rotation as well

      1st Wildcard strategy.
In previous years I have wildcarded in the first few weeks due to not being happy with my team. So this year I thought it may be good idea to try and plan ahead a little. I figured I can do this by picking a team of sure starters who would get me through to the international breaks and then wildcarding after that point if injuries or a change in the difficulty of fixtures make it optimal to do so. However to be diligent I decided to check up to the 1st of Jan the fixture list in case I was missing something and I was glad I did!!!
December could be a minefield this year. I count 7 game weeks between the 7th of December and the 1st of Jan. This will surely lead to rotation and injuries forcing changes to our teams in this busy period. It could be that this year players who hold their wildcard until this period have an advantage over those who used it early.
Do you agree there is an advantage to holding onto your wildcard until December hits or will the gain of using it early on make up for any possible pain later in the season?

If you are doing well, keep it until then. If not, use it as each week is likely to open the gap to the top.

There will be loads of rotation like you say, but what's the point in using a wc when you don't know who's nailed on?
Since the introduction of the gw 2 to 19 wc I can't see past the early wc strategy, as long as the fixture blocks fall nicely and this year they do.

        1. Diamondgeezer
          • 8 Years
          8 years, 4 months ago

I guess it all depends on if you get it right first time picking the team at the start of the season. With planning in November it would be possible to upgrade the bench just by using the weekly free transfers.

          1. A.T
            • 15 Years
            8 years, 4 months ago

Upgrading the bench though won't really bring in the full potential of points. Putting more money into the bench would probably be a mistake too as you're then stuck with it, needing major surgery to adjust it back.
If you wc early you can hit good teams with low owned players and jettison some high owned stock who's fixtures have nosedived. You should get more points out of the wc that way imo.

      4. fedolefan
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 4 months ago

Deciding when to WC before the season starts is always a bad decision. You WC when your team needs it most. There will be people who say that they WC'ed GW3-4 and had their best season ever, but you never hear from those who've said they WC'ed GW3-4 and went on to have horror season. In my opinion, those who WC'ed GW3-4 and had a good run benefited not from an early WC but from a well-timed WC for their team only. Calling it a viable strategy is just silly.

        1. A.T
          • 15 Years
          8 years, 4 months ago

What you're saying here is it's better to have no plan than a plan. Keeping it until you need it makes no sense. When am I going to need it? When I've got a load of injuries because that would be very unlucky. Unless you make some serious cockups you shouldn't need a wc at all.

          1. fedolefan
            • 11 Years
            8 years, 4 months ago

No, there are enough fixture turns in the calendar to necessitate a change in your team. No, I'm saying you are not really planning for anything but the first 3 weeks when you say I'm planning a GW4 WC. 3 weeks out of 38 isn't all that much.

You're on the right track with looking out for the optimal use. I'm surprised how overlooked this is among FFS members. Bit tricky this year as a variety of mixed fixture swings occur in the first 11 gameweeks. I'm setting up to WC pre GW4 at the earliest, and pre GW8 the latest.

I think it will be interesting to see how both teams cope with the referees in the Premier League. Newcastle had to cope with some shocking referees last season and Championship referees seem to let some challenges go unpunished. Brighton, when I saw them, seemed to know exactly how to play the Championship referees and they may give away a lot more free kicks in the Premier Leagie.

Smith's returning from injury and Francis is captain, as you say, so it seems likely he'll start to me.

Yes, GB - anything for you

Ake's main run in the team was weeks 12-17

In this time their general defensive line-up was:

            Daniels, Ake, Cook, Francis
            Boruc

It seems like the safest option, and that's often the best in my experience.

I want Kane in GW3 and I don't want to pay 12.7 for the privilege. Lukaku's fixtures and ownership are too much to ignore - let's see how he starts as he's going to be under pressure and Mourinho will happily have a pop at him in the press.

There is quite a number of top drawer strikers this season and Aguero to name one is now 1 million cheaper than Kane for example.. that's a game changer imo.. i'm a huge fan of Kane i would back him for the golden boot again but the options the prices mean that it is no longer as simple as Kane is in no questions asked imo

Do you remember his end of last season run?

He is probably the most explosive player in the game. It's pros vs cons really. He can hurt non owners more than any other player, especially given his ownership

But, you if like to play the game by taking risks, then more power to you

Remember it well mate and i was labeling Kane as the leagues best striker well over a year ago before anyone caught on too.. i'm not silly i know that i need to have a couple of certain players or there is no point in competing but at the same time i'm not afraid of swerving a highly owned and very expensive player if i believe i can find an alternative to keep pace and have an all round stronger squad with the money saved mate.. if i'm going to have a successful season it will be on my own terms polls or ownership stats don't dictate.. within reason.. if i fail it's on me.. no bother

It's not overcomplicating, I prefer Aguero over both for instance. Kane at £12.5m, Aguero a mill cheaper. Take into account what you can do with the extra mill too. Just a variety of options.

Not enough focus on captains when making RMTs. You're going to need Kane, Lukaku and another huge mid or forward to put the captaincy on, as everyone else will be.

Not captaining Sanchez or Kane during certain game weeks last season would've killed you.

Kane is a phenomenal player. Conte said if he could sign any striker in the world it would be Kane, and you can see why, he has everything.

I could quite happily captain Kane in every game bar 'mun'. You never know when he'll pop up with 4-5 goals.

He'll likely be my captain GW1, despite Kaku having the better fixture.

"For me, Kane, now, is one of the best strikers in the world.

"If I had to buy one striker I would go to Kane. He is a complete striker. He is strong physically, with the ball, without the ball, he fights and he's strong in the air and acrobatic on the right and the left.

"He's a complete player. He's one of the top strikers in the world. If you go to buy Kane now it would be at least £100m."

So Hazard has started training for nearly a week now.

People expect him to be back for gw4, post international break.

That is 7 weeks after he begun training. Surely he is back earlier, possibly targeting Spurs in gw2 which would be 4 weeks of training. Maybe he makes the bench that game and comes on for an appearance, whilst starting in gw3.

Are people really comfortable punting on Willian for 1-2 games? FTs are so valuable early on. Seems a huge a risk that people here are ignoring. Why not go for someone like Zaha instead?

This. I don't plan to have him for long at all. Tbh I'm really just hoping for some points against Burnley and using him as a placeholder for the first budget midfield bandwagon.

If you are committing to that idea you are basically taking a 4pt hit already. If you value a FT as 4pts, which I do.

Fair enough though, each to their own. Could easily get a double digit haul vs Burnley but I wouldn't expect much after that.

Zaha, nailed, home to hudd is just as appealing and has good fixtures after. I'd rather predict who that bandwagon will be, personally.

From my experience punts that you know are going to cost a transfer down the line rarely work out.

Mo Salah got, at absolute worst, an assist in 9 of his last 11 Roma games.

Over the season he got 9 hauls of atleast a goal and an assist including one hattrick.

19 goals 9 assists. I dont think we should over look him just because Coutinho is 9.0 aswell. Salah will probably start either side of a 3 with Mane. I know the Premier League is a different monster compared to Serie A, but he's a lot older than he was when he was at Chelsea, and he's playing in a Liverpool side where Mane, a similar type of player, thrived last year. Who's to say Salah wont aswell? I'm starting with him personally. I'm trying to convince myself it's a good idea.

      4th mid and 3rd striker (343):

      A) Redmond + Mounie

      B) Ince + Austin

      C) Other 12.5 duo?

Nowhere near nailed on. Probably behind Sane and Bernardo Silva in the pecking order now. For a City mid think you have to stump up for KDB really

West Ham's opening fixtures aren't great. Is having a Whammer a requirement for you ? How about Zaha instead he has Huddersfield first up

I have Zaha already and I have Morata so Willian isn't an option.

Was looking for that differential with Chadli and I do like him but I see your point.

Chadli is a dead duck, as far as I have been able to ascertain.

Why would Brighton break their transfer record for Tom Lawrence of Leicester? Is he good?

He's 23 and not regular for Leicester.

Will he start most games if he moves?

Surely a loan move for Fletcher at WHM would be better? At least you won't be stuck with him.

Looks pretty solid. I think one heavy hitter short in midfield but Alonso might cover for that.

No Liverpool the only negative there for me. If you could squeeze in a mid from them it would be amazing
