Swansea City are the next side to be assessed as part of our in-depth team-by-team analysis series for members.

We start by checking in on the team statistics in an attempt to spot trends or improvements over the past 12 months before we shift to analyse player data, as we attempt to narrow the field ahead of the new campaign.

Having been ensconced in the security of mid-table in 2015/16 – claiming 47 points to finish in twelfth position – the Swans were left floundering last season. With just three wins in the opening 19 Gameweeks of 2016/17, the Welsh outfit looked doomed at the midway point until the arrival of Paul Clement.

Appointed as successor to Francesco Guidolin, the new manager chalked up four victories in his first six fixtures to steer his side out of the drop zone. Swansea ultimately clinched fifteenth spot on 41 points – seven clear of relegation, scoring 45 goals.

      Solid.
T.Carroll is the preferred 4.5m by most on here due to nailedness + some set pieces.
Would also go Kolasniac over Luiz due to him playing as a winger in 3-4-3.

Any thoughts on this premium forward line effort?

    Forster - Speroni
    Trippier - Dawson - Cedric - Schindler - Mariappa
    Mane - Tadic - Ritchie - Mooy - Milivojevic
    Kane - Lukaku - Lacazette

    Any thoughts are welcome, thanks.

Sadly it's just more confirmation that 3 premium forwards just doesn't work. Weak defence. Horribly weak midfield. No Man City. I could go on...

It can be done, 8m on GKs the key

      Elliot, £4m
      Trippier, Bertrand, Lindelof, Dawson, £4m
      KdB, Pogba, Fabregas, £4.5m, £4.5m
      Lukaku, Lacazette, Jesus

      That's what I'm on atm.

Thanks, I did quite like the MF and the premium forward line....

Alternative team with just x 2 premium FW:

        Foster - Myhill
        Trippier - Bertrand - Cedric - Dawson - Schindler
        KDB - Mane - Fabregas - Ritchie - Carroll
        Kane - Lukaku - McBurnie

DF leaves scope to bring in someone like Lindelof if they become nailed on. 0.5m ITB.

What are people's opinions on 532 with attacking defenders and 2 heavy hitters, genuinely? Can it be successful?

Many ways to play the game. If the extra 2 defenders fail, you give many a free shot with their 2 attackers if the 3 other defenders are common.

Only viable and possibly successful with attacking wingbacks in 3atb systems, not ordinary attacking defenders eg Bertrand

What's your defence looking like? Most critical if going in 5 at the back I guess.

          Kolasinac - Lindelof - Yoshida - Cedric - Dawson

I got in defenders I like without spending too much imo, so I could have a quality attacking 5 (imo).

Definitely. The only concerns are flexibility and generating team value as defenders tend to rise in value more slowly than midfielders and strikers. Then again they also fall more slowly and at the stat of the season it is more important to avoid falls than jump on risers.

I believe there is a big difference in going with attacking fullbacks, and true wingbacks playing in 3-4-3/3-5-2 systems. If you go with the latter, I think the formation is much more likely to succeed.

Is DDG is the safest path to Man Utd defense?

Seems to be other good options but it is hard to konw who is nailed. Bailly, Blind, Lindelof?

Given their great opening fixtures I plan to start with DDG who would become a 4.5 on the rise keeper and will open funds in gw 8, when they have their first really hard game (Liv - A)

    1. Football Weekender
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

My thoughts exactly. Safest way into that Utd defence and can change to a cheap keeper & nailed Utd defender further down the line when we have more info.

He won't get many save points. A 4.5 will

He'll get lots of clean sheets. A £4.5m won't. But the main point here is DDG is the cheapest nailed way into the Utd defence.

he might, but i wouldn't risk it. Mee is certain and Tarkowski could be ahead of him. one surprise and you're down to 2 playing defenders.

Blimey O'Reilly. You certainly are an original Doos. 🙂

I'm surprised at you going with a 4.0m deadspot in defence though. Usually you like 15 starters, no?

Personally I can't see a 3-5-2 working unless you go without Kane. I think it ends up awfully stretched out.

Fraser is a great pick, though, I think.

4.0 was to afford Fraser. I don't like it, but I'll take it. Yes, I do like 15. If Phillips gets fit quickly, he will replace Fàbregas, and Dummett will return.

Kane is more or less irreplaceable, I think. I've toyed with Jesus, and will have to have him if Sánchez plays.

              GW 1(Sánchez):

              Foster
              Monreal, Yoshida, Tomkins
              Sánchez(c), Eriksen, Coutinho(vc), Fraser
              Jesus, Lukaku, Crouch

              Fabianski; Romeu, Daniels, Hünemeier … 0, 0.0 ITB, TV: 100.0, SV: 100.0

I can do one with Kane, but it is stretched.

Yeah, I see. The defence looks way better with Dummett in there.

Care to explain why Eriksen over Alli?

Development potential. Alli scores goals, yes, but was at his limit, last Season. Eriksen has more to come.

In other words, the two players that I expect to get more points than last Season are Eriksen and Coutinho.

I was pretty pleased at Coutinho's price.

Hmmm. I have family who are Spurs ST holders. According to them Eriksen improved a great deal last season. Perhaps you are right.

I rate Eriksen's set pieces and he's pretty good on FKs. But he didn't score one last season. That could be an easy 2-3 goal uplift right there.

Maybe Kompany if he stays fit. Question is whether you want to take that risk. Luiz also good in the mid-term but Chelsea's opening fixtures are pretty mixed.

I'd say Kolasinac. Was a beast for Schalke last season 3 goals 5 assists in 2000 minutes. He could equal many strikers (take Benteke for example, 136 points in 3100 minutes last season). Could prove excellent value at 6.0.

    International Break...
Does any GW1 selections get based on players traveling long distance?
I got stung last season in GW4 with Sanchez,Aguero,Couthino & Rondon benched...
With City V Liverpool at 12.30pm GW4 its sure to be a minefield ..
Just one to be wary off ..
Hopefully Clubs go down the private jet route again..

I keep this in mind for sure. I will not touch Sanchez since his GW4 fixture is also a home game to Bournemouth squeezed between two tough away games.

Especially with Llorente injured, I'm sure he'll start as their striker. Been scoring in pre season off the back of an excellent season.

It's a market-based game, and while performance usually impacts market behavior, a player's price only rises and falls based on buys and sells.

What are people's thoughts on the team selected by % being available to see prior to GW1? A lot have Trippier who may have gone under the radar somewhat otherwise. Same with Rangel, only chosen because many others have, although it's likely he won't start

I only realised how annoying it was when my friend built his team last night and it was full of good picks he otherwise may not have went for, purely by filtering by TSB%.

        Willian another example

It should be available retrospectively at the start of each gw.

    Any thoughts on the following?

2.0m ITB for an early switch to Kane, if required.....

    Fabianski (4.0)
    Kolasniac, Ake, Yoshida (Suttner, 4.0)
    KDB, Salah, Alli, Puncheon (Carroll)
    Jesus, Lukaku, Ayew

Not necessarily expecting great things from Puncheon and Ayew - but think they are undervalued enablers and should play.

Nice. I'd monitor Ali. Erickson looks to have the better early form. Not so sure about Ayew. Lots of flexibility for 3rd striker at 7.5 and below. I've gone for rashford for now.
