Update Four of our summer development programme is imminent, so I thought I’d bring you an early preview of the new feature introduced in this round of changes – the Fantasy Football Scout heatmaps.

While you may be familiar with the use of heatmaps in football as a means of displaying player touches in a single match, we wanted to go further.

As our members know, we enable our Opta data to be displayed per match, across the season or indeed over a number of intervals. These include all home or away matches, or even the last two, four and six matches or Gameweeks – home or away.

By ensuring that our heatmaps could also be built and displayed for these intervals, we were able to increase their scope significantly.

Firstly, this meant that would could create meaningful heatmaps for events other than just touches.

Because we could visualise data over a group of matches, or even the season, there was some real value in mapping events such as shots, chances created and passes received, among others.

These really came alive when we built heatmaps into our comparison tools.

This enables us to view patterns in player behaviour – analysing queries such as “where has Alexis Sanchez received passes in his last four home matches, compared with away matches”.

The answer is below.
Alexis Sanchez Passes Received Last Four Home vs Last Four Aways
members

As you can see, Sanchez received the majority of his passes out on the left flank over his last four away matches, while he took up more central positions when receiving the ball at the Emirates.

This is the kind of analysis that is now possible, confirming information that has been difficult to decipher or collect previously – other than by watching all of Sanchez’s previous matches, of course.

But our heatmaps can also be applied to teams and, in this way, Fantasy managers can analyse pairings created by forthcoming fixtures and attempt to identify areas of strength and weakness.

For example, AFC Bournemouth travel to West Brom for Gameweek 1 and, analysing their heatmaps for last season (all matches), we can find some areas of potential for the visitors.

West Brom Challenges Lost vs Bournemouth Successful Take-ons – 2016/17 Season
members

West Bromwich Albion’s lost challenges are mapped on the left, indicating that they were more susceptible to being beaten by attackers on the right-side of their defence.

Equally, if we look at Bournemouth’s map of successful take-ons – when a player beats his defender – we see that the Cherries are particularly strong down their left flank.

We can therefore deduce that West Brom’s Craig Dawson may be targeted by Ryan Fraser and Charlie Daniels in this match and that they may get some joy in this area, perhaps even some Fantasy returns.

These are just two examples of how the feature can be used to improve your analysis of teams and players.

I’ve also produced a preview movie showing further cases and illustrating the heatmaps in action.

Heatmaps are currently on our test server and will be made available to our members as part of Update Four, which is due to go live later this week.

Heatmaps Preview Movie

A reminder that, if you want access to this forthcoming update and other future additions to the members’ area, you can sign up for the new season now for our pre-season price of Ā£12.50 (RRP Ā£15.00).

Existing registered users can upgrade via this link. New users, who are yet to get a registered account, can sign up via this link.

If you’re new to the benefits of Fantasy Football Scout membership, you can get full details, along with a series of movies previewing the content, via this page.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The good news is that Cedric has joined the team. In my fpl team if he starts tomorrow vs Augsburg.

I've searched many sites and nobody had the goal involvement stats for Newcastle players. I think this is one of the best stats out there, because it shows you how important a player is to their team.

I manually went through each Championship game for both Ritchie and Gayle to work out their goal involvement.

    The formula is:

goals team scored while player is on pitch / goals player is involved in = goal involvement

    Matt Ritchie

    Goals involved in: 20
Goals Newcastle scored while on the pitch: 70

    Goal involvement: 0.29

    Dwight Gayle

    Goals involved in: 25
Goals Newcastle scored while on the pitch: 42

    Goal involvement: 0.60

Watched Gayle a lot last year (I'm a newcastle fan) and I said when we signed him, he'd bang them in in the Championship but not in the Prem.

Simply put, he finishes well but doesn't provide a lot to the team elsewhere - I can't see our team dominating many opposition sides and I think his stats will drop considerably.

      Hope I'm wrong though.

Cheers, have been looking for Ritchie's goal involvement for a while, this is really useful! Looks like I may be steering clear, better options than 30% goal involvement. Seems like everything goes through Gayle though, which is interesting...

This is good. But also Fabregas played mostly the home games against weaker teams so that skews the stats a bit, while Willian played against teams home and away. I was on willian but am leaning towards fabregas. Might depend on how long Hazard and bakayoko are out.

Willian expected to take over from hazard as he did in the FA cup, fabregars game time will be increased with Matic gone though.. leaning towards Fab especially long term

recently made the switch from willian to fabregas. Team feels a little more risky now but greater points potential. Would only recommend fabregas if you have at least 2 playing bench

Thanks. Kane to Jesus is unthinkable for a Spurs-fan - sorry.

I know it's conservative. But i figure it is better with a safe and solid start, and then wildcard to a 3-4-3 with some emerging outsiders after GW6 when we know more.

If Cedric and Trippier start the season:

    DDG
    Kolasinac, Danilo, Trippier, Bertrand, Cedric
    KDB, Willian
    Kane, Lukaku, Firmino

10 attacking outfield players. Only missing arsenal attack from top 6 teams (although Kolasinac basically a winger in 343).

    Tasty.

Danilo gets very high up the pitch. I was very impressed vs. Tottenham, lots of touches in the box and he is quite selfish with his shots. If Mendy is out until GW3 I'll take Danilo, but Kompany otherwise.

This isn't my actual team, I have 433 with Gabbi/Austin 3rd striker. But the rest is otherwise very similar.

Good team. I'd want Firm to be better personally.

      Foster
      Cedric Bertrand Trippier Aké Valencia
      Willian Salah
      Kane Lukaku Jesus

Similar to mine- hope we get off to a good start!

I basically put Firm to get Liverpool attacking coverage as I quite like their fixtures. I did consider Salah/Cout and Jesus instead of KDB similar to yourself but I'm a little put off by potential rotation and transfer rumours respectively. Firmino seems pretty nailed.

Any reason Walcott is being shunned so far? From what I've seen he's had a decent pre-season and if Sanchez (and maybe The Ox) leaves will he not be a guaranteed starter?

Or has Wenger made it clear he's not going to play much? At £7.5m, if he's going to get game time, surely he's up for consideration or am I missing something?

I'd say it depends how many other punts you have in your starting 11. He's worth a punt if you can afford him not to be getting enough time / points. Personally he's on my watch list.

Too much spent in defence I'd say. Downgrade in defence and upgrade your midfield.

    A) Mane and JWP

    I'm wondering is Fraser nailed?
Ibe is having a good pre-season, Stanislas is probably ahead of him, and there's rumours they are trying to sign Gray!

Stanislas is injured and I think ibe would play on the other flank. Fraser is nailed then unless gray comes. Don't think gray will go of mahrez leave s though.

Mili on penalties & Ayew looking good when not injured surely has to worth a look as a cheaper striker option.

    A or B

    A) Kane+Willian
    B) Jesus+Coutinho

Bear in mind its easier to downgrade Kane than include him in the team.

Assumptions: First couple of fixtures, before Hazard returns. Coutinho stays for Liverpool
