Update Four of our summer development programme is imminent, so I thought I’d bring you an early preview of the new feature introduced in this round of changes – the Fantasy Football Scout heatmaps.

While you may be familiar with the use of heatmaps in football as a means of displaying player touches in a single match, we wanted to go further.

As our members know, we enable our Opta data to be displayed per match, across the season or indeed over a number of intervals. These include all home or away matches, or even the last two, four and six matches or Gameweeks – home or away.

By ensuring that our heatmaps could also be built and displayed for these intervals, we were able to increase their scope significantly.

Firstly, this meant that would could create meaningful heatmaps for events other than just touches.

Because we could visualise data over a group of matches, or even the season, there was some real value in mapping events such as shots, chances created and passes received, among others.

These really came alive when we built heatmaps into our comparison tools.

This enables us to view patterns in player behaviour – analysing queries such as “where has Alexis Sanchez received passes in his last four home matches, compared with away matches”.

The answer is below.
Alexis Sanchez Passes Received Last Four Home vs Last Four Aways
members

As you can see, Sanchez received the majority of his passes out on the left flank over his last four away matches, while he took up more central positions when receiving the ball at the Emirates.

This is the kind of analysis that is now possible, confirming information that has been difficult to decipher or collect previously – other than by watching all of Sanchez’s previous matches, of course.

But our heatmaps can also be applied to teams and, in this way, Fantasy managers can analyse pairings created by forthcoming fixtures and attempt to identify areas of strength and weakness.

For example, AFC Bournemouth travel to West Brom for Gameweek 1 and, analysing their heatmaps for last season (all matches), we can find some areas of potential for the visitors.

West Brom Challenges Lost vs Bournemouth Successful Take-ons – 2016/17 Season
members

West Bromwich Albion’s lost challenges are mapped on the left, indicating that they were more susceptible to being beaten by attackers on the right-side of their defence.

Equally, if we look at Bournemouth’s map of successful take-ons – when a player beats his defender – we see that the Cherries are particularly strong down their left flank.

We can therefore deduce that West Brom’s Craig Dawson may be targeted by Ryan Fraser and Charlie Daniels in this match and that they may get some joy in this area, perhaps even some Fantasy returns.

These are just two examples of how the feature can be used to improve your analysis of teams and players.

I’ve also produced a preview movie showing further cases and illustrating the heatmaps in action.

Heatmaps are currently on our test server and will be made available to our members as part of Update Four, which is due to go live later this week.

Attenborough narrated every episode of Wildlife on One, a BBC One wildlife series that ran for 253 episodes between 1977 and 2005. At its peak, it drew a weekly audience of eight to ten million, and the 1987 episode "Meerkats United" was voted the best wildlife documentary of all time by BBC viewers

Yoshida unless Cedric gets 60 minutes in a pre season game.

JWP could have a breakthrough season, set piece maestro, good value. Probably why Tadic is being overlooked.

Does anybody else think Chelsea might wind up struggling early on this season? Tricky fixtures. No Diego Costa or Eden Hazard. Moratta no where near up to speed. Currently relying heavily on Batshuyi for big goals against big clubs. But then they are Champion.

They'll probably fluke a win against Burnley then against us they can sit back and soak up pressure and then spring on the counterattack like they did against us at Wembley. I can don't think they will start particularly fluidly, but they will be effective.

      Trippier, Bailey, Cedric, Danilo
      KDB, Zaha, Pogba, Willian
      Lukaku, Jesus

      SUB: Elliot, Rangel, Carroll, Abraham

Do have £1m in the bank.
Forster -> Foster (frees up another £0.5m)
      Cedric -> Pied/Yoshida if necessary
Danilo -> Mendy or Walker (or Bertrand/Dawson/PVA)
Willian easily can swap for Fabregas (monitoring Walcott situation)

        1. JohnnyMagrinho
            8 years, 4 months ago

I've since quite a few teams without Kane in it.

I think Lukaku is the better choice for £1m less and United have better fixtures. Not convinced Spurs will take to Wembley so well - if they do then it'll be something I can easily WC for early on.

12.5 for Kane is a lot of money, Jesus is £2m cheaper and opens a lot of opportunities in rest of team.

It may be one of those "wait and see" eventualities for the first few GWs.

But yes, I think Kane is brilliant, just not sure if I can't get a better points spread spending £2m less in attack, to help bolster rest of my squad. That was my thinking.

          • 8 Years

I'd be worried about Mkhi and Sterling having consistent game time. You might also end up having 3 subs that don't start, could be a problem.

        2. JohnnyMagrinho
            8 years, 4 months ago

Weak back up defenders (not too sure on game time either?)

Personally don't mind the midfield, but Carroll as your fourth MF and RLC as 5th seems a bit thin.

Not too convinced Chicarito will have an instant impact either.

West Ham have Man Utd, Southampton and WBA away in the first 5 GWs. Something that's keeping me away from them for the time being.

Don't see Defoe in many teams as a 3rd striker. Is it the price point?

4th highest scoring striker last season in a terrible Sunderland team, and now has a much better team behind him..

Yeah - the strikers being favoured are ever the big-hitters or super cheapos. Defoe and Benteke are both good value in the mid range.

              Really?

BOU: 55 goals, 453 shots, 65 big chances, 337 chances created

SUN: 29 goals, 387 shots, 35 big chances, 266 chances created

Seems a better environment for a striker to me..

                Better yes

                Price reflects that

          Folks, which option is better?

          A) Jesus and Bats
