Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, we move to focus on one of the key sources of Fantasy talent – Tottenham Hotspur.

We start by analysing their performance on a team level, assessing last season’s data in order to spot trends and areas improvement. Following that, we drill down into the player data, pinpointing the key individuals.

For this article, we also focus on two specific points of interest for Fantasy managers – assessing the Dele Alli versus Christian Eriksen conundrum, while weighing up the allure of Harry Kane as a “fire and forget” captaincy option.

It’s fair to say that Mauricio Pochettino’s side showed their mettle last season after a disastrous end to 2015/16 saw them pick up two points in the final four fixtures and tumble out of the title race.

Spurs improved their points haul from 70 to 86 and also scored far more goals than beforehand – a total of 86 was far superior to 69 in the previous campaign and more than any team in the top-flight.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Is Phil Jones too big a gamble?

Coming off pre-season and with the European suspensions it looks like Smalling and Lindelof will play together in the Super Cup game and the first group stage game. Does this pave the way for a Bailly Jones partnership in the league for the first few until Lindelof has settled? Mourinho took a while to introduce Mkhitaryan into the first team last year.

Pied is not a certain starter, Cedric can start too. Sterling is a high doubt too. I am not sure about pogba influence either. What about you go with Arnold (Liverpool) or Clarke (Newcastle) instead of pied. Willian + salah (9+7)= sterling + pogba (8+8)

I posted this last year but it bears repeating.

    http://goalscorerchallenge.co.uk/

Goalscorer Challenge is a nifty little fantasy game I play, but it's pretty small fry.

You pick a player each week, if they score, you get a point, if they score two, two points etc.

You can only pick each player once all season.

International breaks and FA cup weekends also count, so that's good for FPL addicts like us!

Alexis' staying is the only issue i have. If he stays, team will be

    Ryan, Elliot
    Alderweireld, Kolasinac, Ake, Suttner, Hudson
    Alexis, Salah, Alli, Carroll, Chalobah
    Kane, Benteke, Mounie

Fancy Carroll to play and give some returns so no problem his being my 4th mid. Ake and Suttner rotate pretty well so pretty happy with the result. Thoughts?

What about Alderweireld > Trippier, Alli > KDB?

Cheers, although I wouldnt get KDB over Alli even if he was cheapier. My only concern is the pair Carroll and Chalobah (who to bench or how to get 1 mil to upgrade one of them to Gross) pretty happy with all the rest. Trippier may be rotated if Spurs sign another RB and i trust Toby's aerial threat so wouldnt change him atm.

        1. GUNNERINHO

Cheers, thats what i m thinking with Naughton instead of Ake (Francis may not be nailed on) and either Toby -> Trippier or Kol -> Monreal. But it would seriously weaken my defence. I may start with one change (Ake -> Naughton) and watch Brighton and Swansea to decide between Carroll and Gross.

2-3 week old Sanchez draft I did looks more balanced

Cheers, it truly seems more balanced, although i dont trust either of the Manchester teams' managers. Mourinho chases the 1-0 wins and Guardiola's tactics are awful imo. Aguero at 11.5 should be the best investment and yet i never thought about getting him. Rotation and bad tactics make him a -thanks but no thanks- situation. Lukaku's ownership is ridiculously high so didnt ever go there either. And Harry is the best striker in PL cant not have him. Thanks for sharing though, nice to see alternatives. Ritchie is in my watchlist may go there after the Spurs fixture somehow.

Im currently on 352 w Kane/Lukaku upfront. Those 2 will hurt OR if they get firing from gw1.

You are right though regarding the manchester clubs managers w respect to approach.

United have Mkhi Pog Martial Rash Mata but only Lukaku is a viable option

City only KDB and maybe Jesus as options out of so many attackers (Kun might be 1st to get subbed regardless of match situation)

Very heavy back line but guess you know that! Wouldn't feel comfortable playing Puncheon (rotation risk) and Mooy most games. Like the Eriksen flair move but think no Kane or Alli with their ownership could see you sink quick.

Isn't puncheon the club captain? Atsu is tempting.
Yes the back 3 are all heavy hitters, but then they are all wingbacks which makes them as good as midfielders with extra benifits.

Expensive Def yes. But they are all wingbacks . Which makes them as good as defender with extra benifits.

Basically I'll be playing with 0-8-2

"...as good as midfielders with extra benefits..."

      > I wasn't aware that midfielders could lose points for goals conceded?
      > Walker scored 4 goals in 183 games for Spurs. At that rate he might score 1 this season unless his move has miraculously improved his shooting. Add 4 or 5 assists and that's 18 or 21 attacking points (which he'll get less credit for in the BPS than a midfielder would). Would you be happy with that from a 6.5m midfielder?
      > In which case it would be more accurate to categorise Walker as a defender with extra benefits, which is actually what he is. But the "extra benefits" are unlikely to be huge and there are other defenders who are likely to garner more attacking points than him.
      > Both Walker and Alonso will likely be rotated. There will be scenes on here when it happens and Guardiola/Conte will be called trolls. The only alternative would be for the FPL managers to accept that they made questionable assumptions themselves.
      > Kolasinac could just as easily be used as a CB. He has yet to play a competitive game for Arsenal. People are making the assumption that suits them rather than accepting the uncertainty that actually exists.

It is usually best to take FFS fashions with a pinch of salt. Examine the negatives as well as the positives and then make your call. Rather than making blithe assumptions or, even worse, swallowing the blithe assumptions others are making and then passing them on down the line.

Personally I see a fair few popular but questionable assumptions replicated in that team. I also see a dubious and inefficient squad structure. It's a 4/10 for me. 😕

    Just a thought:
Many are ending up with 2 4.5 mids or a 4.5 forward.
The way i see it, it is not easy to find a 4th mid or 3rd forward that will give points. It will come out eventually but not now.
We field 11 players and if one averages 60pts per game that works out to 5.5 pts per game per player.
Take out the captaincy options and the big hitters this number for your 11th choice is around 2.5 points per game.
If we take a 6 mil mid, or a 6.5 mil forward as our "11th" choice it does not improve much.

    MY QUESTION IS:
Maybe just go for 9 choices and have 2 lowest priced players as 10 and 11th picks early on. This gives one the licence to have a strong first 9 and probably 5 pts for your lat 2 picks. The season will unravel and picks become more obvious but for now it could become a good ploy.

I hope the above makes sense.

I have also gone 442 because of this reason.
      I have 2 premium forwards, 2 mids, 2 defenders and 1 GK.

I started with 5 3 2 and slowly moved away. now I am picking the 4 subs and 2 players with the minimum budget required. Thereafter I spend the remaining large budget in balanced "big hitters"

Totally agree, if only we knew this year's Capoue then the squad would be the strongest it could be. If you try to downgrade Kane to Jesus to fit Redmond, then both could blank easily and end up with 4 points whereas Kane could score just once and get 8-9 points.

Yaeh. That is the point. We don't know the budget players that will do well. A bit like Texas Holdem or playing the stock market; our educated knowledge gives us a slight edge that magnifies throughout the game.

    Ok. Tweaked.

    Not sure on Chicharito yet.
    How is this looking...?

    Foster (Hart)
Trippier - Bailly - Ake (Yedlin - Hunemeier)
Ritchie - Willian - Coutinho - Alli (Carroll)
    Lukaku - Chicharito - Jesus

Still 1.0 itb to change a little

Every year I begin with players either new to their team or new to the prem.

    RMT

    Pickford
Salah / Bernardo Silva / Klaassen / Ince
    Morata / Lacazette / Chicharito

    Hart / Ake / Hughes / Fonte

Any pending or future transfers (e.g. Iheanacho) will also be considered

Herrera good player but not in fpl terms. Pied may only start 1 game. Everton hard opening fixtures and better early season value than Baines. Mitrovic not nailed. If you can change these players team very much stronger

Not sure 4-3-3 is viable with Abraham as a constant player, though i think Foster offers better value than DDG, A

    Rate my team

    Ryan
    Kolasinac Danilo Trippier Yoshida
    Willian Zaha Fraser
    Kane Lukaku Aguero

    Elliot Carroll Romeu £4m

Got £1.5m in the bank, choosing Danillo over Kompany for the first couple weeks for attacking flare. Was a choice between Kolasinac or Alonso. I like the options at £7m for midfielders, not so much £8m, and Liverpool play too many games in the first month so will moniter that situation.

Looks like you will be playing either 4-4-2 or 3-5-2..?anyways its a good team..you can change Bailly/Kolasinac to a mancity def imo as they will be carrying a more attacking threat..
