Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, we move to focus on one of the key sources of Fantasy talent – Tottenham Hotspur.

We start by analysing their performance on a team level, assessing last season’s data in order to spot trends and areas improvement. Following that, we drill down into the player data, pinpointing the key individuals.

For this article, we also focus on two specific points of interest for Fantasy managers – assessing the Dele Alli versus Christian Eriksen conundrum, while weighing up the allure of Harry Kane as a “fire and forget” captaincy option.

It’s fair to say that Mauricio Pochettino’s side showed their mettle last season after a disastrous end to 2015/16 saw them pick up two points in the final four fixtures and tumble out of the title race.

Spurs improved their points haul from 70 to 86 and also scored far more goals than beforehand – a total of 86 was far superior to 69 in the previous campaign and more than any team in the top-flight.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

What formation is everything going with on FPL?

I don't think I've ever changed my formation so much before the start of a season. I always used to go for 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 and stick throughout the season but I keep changing my formation all time at the moment!

3-5-2 for me. Too many midfielders I want!

I'm the opposite Ron. I'm finding that there are to many strikers that I want and I'm struggling with midfielders outside KDB.

442 at the minute but normally always 343 but the 3rd cheaper strikers don't appeal at the minute

I normally play a 3-4-3. I was settled on 4 at the back this season and switching between 4-3-3 and 4-4-2. I've now switched to 3-5-2. There's lots of strikers I'd like, but they weaken the rest of my team because of their prices. I may change it a few more times before the season starts

    Hello all,

Mistake made earlier. Let me repost.
If paying 5.0M for a keeper is not an issue, who is a better GK started for the first 5-6 gameweeks:

    A. Hart
    B. Forster

A new day, a new team...

    Foster (Elliot)
    Trippier Yoshida Valencia Stones (Long)
    Alli/Erikson KDB Salah JWP (Carroll)
    Lukaku Lacazette (Quaner)

    What do you all think?

    1. GPV

Very nice! I'm starting with Danilo instead of Stones just because I don't know who's more nailed on (Stones or Otamendi) if Pep goes with 4 at the back. At least with Danilo you need he'll be a starter till Mendy is fit... Mendy will need easing into as well. Then you can get Stones if he's starting. And i'm going with Eriksen over Alli... better form in preseason.

I'm seriously considering no Kane or Lukaku. More than considering tbh. More, all but set on.

Not really even that concerned about it. Got easy plan for Kane gw3 and pretty confident I can stay in touch with the pack or even maybe get an early differential for 2 weeks.

Anyone else going without these 2?

But its only 2 weeks. My 11 is

        Bego/Hart

        Walker Alonso Trippier Cedric
        Alli Willian Pogba
        Jesus Lacazette Firmino

So big 6 attack cover. 3 big 6 club fullbacks and Soton fullback for fixtures

You don't think even for 2 weeks that can match a lukaku or kane side?

I tried something similar to this last year to justify not getting Sanchez & it killed me! Just going to play it simple this time & get Kane & captain him often. I can take a quiet GW1/2 worst case

I also want Lacazette. Lacazette/Kaku/Kane is a great forward line as they're all nailed on lone strikers with pens for teams that create chances. Backing them up with KDB is my preferred set of big hitters. Just leaves no room for liverpool, which might be ok with their opening schedule

There is really no point of "planning". Each gw brings a load of surprises and 'plans' never go as they are planned. People will kneejerk and only the ones with balanced teams will survive because of the flexibility of their teams. The rest will kneejerk. This has happened for years in fpl and it won't be any different this year.

What about an injury or midfield bandwagon that emerges and you can't change them because your scrambling to get Kaku and Kane in. Easier to get rid and upgrade. Fantasy won't be won or lost in the first few gameweeks. Don't overthinking things by saying you can go without last seasons 2 best strikers.

This is an alternative I have looked at in the past, but then I keep having visions of Kane getting a goal against Newcastle & a 0.1/0.2 price rise then all plans scuppered/need extra hit. He could easily nick a goal at Chelsea too. The guys an FPL beast

If he does blank v Newcastle & Chelsea a lot of those 48% casuals could sell, leading to him being 11.8 before Burnley which would support your plan even more. I just couldn't do the gamble when I want Kane for the season anyway.

Strongly considering going without one of them to make room for Jesus in my life (or Aguero). But would need a plan to get Kane back in GW3 if dropping him. But those future planned moves never seem to work out as there's always more pressing issues.. What is your plan to get him back in?

I'm not starting with Kane. I'm not comfortable with leaving out Lukaku as well though. As long as you use the extra funds wisely, and the rest of your team gets you returns, then I think it's fine. If Kane blanks a few weeks, you'd win, if he doesn't, just hope the rest of your team makes up for it. My only concern is who will you captain? Jesus and Lacazette most likely? Jesus and Laca could possibly play out wide if Aguero and Giroud starts. They can still score from those positions, but it's better having the target man as a captain option. I'd try to fit in KDB if you're going without Kane and Lukaku

    DDG
    Trippier Stones Yoshida Ake (4.0)
    KDB Salah Willian Zaha (Ritchie)
    Lukaku Jesus (4.5)

Will probably start with 442 but gives me a viable option with Ritchie on the bench

A sure starting 5th mid on pens and free kicks...

I can't believe the number of similar teams I'm seeing here. I had almost identical 11 yesterday, apart from Daniels vs. Ake, Coutinho vs Salah.

Back to your team.. It is very solid. Apart from J Rod. Don't you think J Rod can be downgraded to a 4.5, and get a 6.0 defender making your team better? Especially if the Arsenal wing back does well on Sunday.

Odd that people are choosing newly promoted teams. They're such a gamble and not like they're especially cheap like in past years.

Could pay off but I don't see it being worth the risk personally.

There are a few that could be worth a gamble, such as Ince & Ritchie for example.
They have the potential to do quite well but I agree, its a big gamble, especially at the start of the season.

        • 9 Years

It's not a big gamble. They're cheaper than the good options from old teams and players of the same price from those teams are proven crap

I don't think we should automatically consider the promoted sides weaker than the PL veterans.
I see Newcastle doing better than Swansea, Stoke and WestBrom this year.
Brighton and Huddersfield are still a minefield for me.

Those sides just don't have a heavy hitter like Swansea have Siggy at least.

Stoke and West Brom don't either so they have the same option either way I'm avoiding all those teams.

Aren't Ritchie, Gayle, Ince, Mooy capable of racking up the points?
Those look better value to me than overpriced Siggy tbh.

The promoted teams will score goals inevitably and with Newcastle and Huddersfield having a kind fixtures I'd say it's worth the punt.

            I doubt it.

Mooy had 5 goals and less assists in the championship which is a much easier league.

Fair points, maybe not a big gamble.

Wouldn't be going near any of them. Have been here before with Matt Richie last time he came up from the championship with a bag of goals & assists... same with Adel Taarabt scoring bucketfuls from midfield. I think they'll all struggle - Gayle, Knockaert, Ritchie, Ince. Phillips/Chadli much better options at 5.5 & I'd also back JWP & Fraser to outscore them at 5.5. Even Milivoich is a better option imo.

I wouldn't say Lukaku would be a flop, but the other players in the same price bracket (Alexis, Kane, Aguero) play for more attacking sides. I just don't see potential in United trashing weak opponents with 4-5 goals difference. ManCity, Spurs and Arsenal are capable of that on the other hand.

lol you are a joke my friend. Season after season his 4231 failed. He should've been sacked a long time ago for not not changing his system. Arsenal's defensive pressing is absolutely awful, anyone who watches a game can tell you that. So often you will see Sanchez pressing all by himself and trying to urge his teammates to press yet they just do nothing. And none of them even know who is meant to press and when, they all look confused. Wenger assembled a great invincibles team no doubt about that but then for no apparent reason he completely changed his philosophy and only went after technical players who are poor in every other area. I'm sorry but you absolutely have no idea what you're on about.
