A smart finish from rising star Dominic Calvert-Lewin confirms Everton’s progress in the Europa League following a generally uneventful evening in Slovakia.

Ruzomberok 0 Everton 1 (0-2 on aggregate)

A Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal settled the second leg of Everton’s Europa League tie with Slovakian side Ruzomberok, with the Toffees now through to the competition’s play-off stage.

The England U19 international came on in the second half and finished smartly from the edge of the area after being released by Davy Klaassen.

Everton controlled a rather drab match, dominating possession and having 12 shots to their hosts’ four, but the lack of overall quality on show was demonstrated by the fact that the Toffees managed only two attempts on target.

Manager Ronald Koeman played four at the back in the first leg, but switched to a three-man defence of skipper Phil Jagielka, Ashley Williams and Michael Keane in Slovakia.

Tom Davies and Leighton Baines were used as wing-backs in a 3-5-2 formation in which Wayne Rooney and Sandro played up front, with Klaassen in the number 10 role just behind them.

Fantasy veteran Baines has consistently produced points as a left-back over the years. Should he spend time this season in a more advanced position, he could become a very attractive option indeed.

As for Davies, who managed two goals and three assists from a limited run in central midfield last year, he might struggle to repeat the feat from a wider and more defensive role. He did, however, impress, bringing an energy and verve notably lacking in Cuco Martina when he played as a right-back in the first leg.

Should Davies be utilised as a right wing-back in the continued absence of Seamus Coleman, it doesn’t look good news for the Fantasy prospects of either Martina or Mason Holgate as 4.5 options in defence.

Jordan Pickford made his debut in the Everton goal and would probably have wished for more to do as he bids to make the number one jersey his own, while up front, Rooney, Sandro and Klaassen again indulged in some nice interplay but produced little in the way of end product.

That was left to Calvert-Lewin, who replaced Sandro and played centrally, with Rooney allowed a freer role. Koeman used a similar tactic in the first match and Rooney looked more comfortable in both ties when not required to operate solely in the centre.

Whether that means Calvert-Lewin could be handed a regular role up front remains to be seen, although Koeman was quick to praise him, and hint at his future, post-match.

“Maybe Dominic feels a bit more comfortable as one of two strikers. He’s strong, he’s fast and he scored a great goal.”

His price – 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League and 7.8m in the Sky game – is classic budget third striker material, but how much pitch-time he’ll be handed is the great unknown.

What is beyond doubt is Everton’s daunting start to the domestic season. An opening day visit by Stoke City is the calm before a storm involving last year’s top three and a trip to Man United.

At least the Toffees now have two competitive matches under their belt, and they go into today’s play-off draw with another two-legged tie awaiting them on August 17 and 24.

In domestic terms, the first leg is four days prior to a Gameweek 2 trip to Manchester City, with the second leg taking place two days before a Gameweek 3 visit to Chelsea.

Progress past the play-offs and they will qualify for the group stages of European football’s most gruelling slog, throwing the risk of rotation into the mix of their squad.

Everton: Pickford; Williams, Keane, Jagielka; Davies, Schneiderlin (Barry 81), Gueye, Baines, Klaassen; Sandro (Calvert-Lewin 69), Rooney (Mirallas 86).

Subs not used: Stekelenburg, Martina, Holgate, Lookman.

With the champions league tie being the priority do we think Liverpool players will be rested in gameweek one and two 5 games in 15 days is not what you want to do right at the beginning of the season, will coutinho play the champions league games if the think they will sell him which means some players will have to be rested the league games that coutinho will surely play in.

    De Gea (Elliot)

Trippier - Bertand - Alonso - (Francis, Mee)

De Bruyne - Salah - Willian - Ritchie - (Carroll)

Do you think Foster/Elliot is better than Fabianski/Elliot?

Why did you opt for a 4.5 striker? I'm flip-flopping between Austin and your option.

Do you have Mee to rotate with Betrand for GW 6 and 12? Or just because he is the best 4.5? Dunk might be an option for rotation with Daniels in 3 & 4.

      The rest looks good.

The omission of Alonso in so many teams does fascinate me (and admittedly he's not in my draft at the moment).

The guy was on fire at the end of last season and was even taking good FKs.

I'm intrigued to hear why people are deciding to not have him in their teams other than his price being too much.

No doubt the next week will see further tinkering but this is the team I am with at the moment. Foster & Fabi rotate through the season so hopefully 38 home matches in goal. Concerned by lack of Spurs or Chelsea in defence, Austin not nailed, no Arsenal in the side and no Alli or Eriksen (although have Kane for spurs cover). Think it gives a pretty good cover across most teams though. Thoughts?

    Foster / Fabi

    Mee / Daniels / Bailly / Tomins / Cedric

    KDB / Mooy / Mane / Willian / Carroll

    Jesus / Kane / Austin

I'm not a fan. I like where you're going but with 100m it's so hard to squeeze everybody in. Lukaku is a big miss, and a big risk. There is uncertainty about too much players in my opinion; Cedric, Tomkins, perhaps even Jesus and Austin while I just don't know much about Mooy. Bailly for 6 seems expensive, I'd rather have DDG for 5.5 or count on Blind to play.

      1. Rodney
        • 12 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

Yep I agree with you. Kane essential for me and getting Lukaku in is tough, I'd have to downgrade KDB to replace Jesus but then I'd have zero Man City attack and I expect them to be the leagues highest scoring team this season. I don't like my defence though as you rightly point out. Needs tinkering. Mooy seems to be on pens and FK's & corners for Hud so I am going to punt on him. Fingers crossed!

        Cheers mate.

Need some help filling out 3 final spaces of my team:

    343

    Elliot / XXX
    Trippier / Cedric / Yoshida / 4.5 / 4.0
    Alli / Salah / XXX / Willian / 4.5
    Lukaku / Jesus / XXX

Have 20m to do it with. I'm ok with playing Elliot with a 4.0 if it is useful for the other 2 spots. If not a 4.0, I'd want DDG there.

Some notes: I don't want to double up with Man U attack. I'm not a huge Zaha fan but my mind could maybe be changed. I kinda want Ramsey just for full top 6 attack coverage.

So you want DDG and then have 14.5 to play with. Austin would give you another 8 but you don't want Pogba or Miki. A 4.5 striker and Eriksen is not an option because of 3-4-3.
Perhaps Austin, Zaha and upgrade your defence / save the funds?

Sanchez + Kane + Lukaku takes a big chunk of the funds. But could be gold. I wish you luck!

    Version 3994RX8. Any good?

    DDG – (Elliot)
    Alonso – Kola – Trippier – Daniels – (Rangel)
    KDB – Mkhi – Willian – Zaha – (Carroll)
    Lukaku – Jesus – (Quarner)

Bench is awful but I've never paid much attention to that 😀

Teams are rotated more than ever these days. Ignore the bench at your peril.

Scared to go without any Arsenal attacking coverage, so is Ramsey a good shout at 7m? Would replace Mhki (reluctantly, but fear rotation) and allow me to upgrade Stones to Walker (or Jones to Bailly, or Pied to Bertrand, or Carroll to JWP)

    Foster (Elliot)
    Trippier, Stones, P.Jones, Pied (Dunk)
    KDB, Willian, Mkhitaryan, Ritchie (Carroll)
    Kane, Lukaku (Chicharito)

Kola could be the attacking cover you look for...

This is my favourite draft so far (reposted to latest thread):

    DDG
    Kompany Trippier Ake Cedric
    KDB Salah Fabregas Ritchie
    Kane Lukaku

    GTG or any changes needed?

Had to lose Zaha > Ritchie to get Kane but I think this is worth it
